( hotter today than yesteray with clear skies. breezes have picked up a little as well around the region up to 20 mainly. not anticipating any alert for wind today and the rest of the week. we are going to warm up through the week however with temps peaking on thursday and friday. humidity remains very dry as well. .......................... ......... .................. evening planner calling for warm temperatures through the night with light breezes again. plenty of 90's this evening with 11pm temps nice and comfortable. commute temps should be in the 80's again and hotter tomorrow. but your morning should be nice with light winds increasing by afternoon. we''ll have more on the r ((denise valdez)) much of the carolinas drenched by rain friday afternoon as tropical storm hermine slid friday and left hundreds of thousands without power. but the hermine isn't done. along parts of the east coast -- there are threats of floods and dangerous riptides through labor day weekend. chris welch is in apalachicola, florida to explain.. (nats) hermine made landfall near saint marks, florida overnight -- pounding florida's gulf coast with heavy rains, and high winds the first hurricane to hit florida in 11 years. (marvin heymann/impacted by hermine): "what a mess." (sandy matthews/impacted): "what a mess." like rocks. cracked -- and jagged . all because of hermine. (mayor rick kriseman/st. petersburg, fl): "quite candidly this is one of the worst we've seen in this city in a long time. on the hard-hit island of cedar key -- storm surge devastated parts of the community (chief virgil sandlin/cedar key, fl police dept): "the majority of the businesses don't have a front anymore. the water come through the back door and went out the front, just tore everything to pieces." but hermine isn't done with her path of destruction. (dr. rick knabb/meteorologist & director, national hurricane center): "a system because that means whatever rainfall is occurring could happen for not only hours, but days in some spots." the storm is expected to impact much of the east coast throughout the holiday weekend. (cathy haynes/chief of operations, charleston co.): "our biggest concern is people getting out on the roadways that really don't need to be out there because they don't understand the seriousness of these things because they have never been through this before." in apalachicola, florida , i'm chris welch. ((dave courvoisier)) night about a mountain's edge couple who came to us about their stolen mailbox... they believe their mailbox was stolen sometime last week....leaving them wondering who might be combing through their information. we reached out to the postal service... to see when a new mailbox would be installed... and we found out tonight.. that a new mailbox was delivered earlier today./// ((dave courvoisier)) and, people in the southwest valley will see some relief... at least for a little bit. we're talking about the loud blasting crews have been doing... according to commissioner susan brager... blasting in the area is on hold. she plans to meet with all those involved this coming tuesday. earlier this week we told you about neighbors complaining the blasting was damaging their homes. we'll be following tuesday's meeting and update you on what they talked about./// ((denise valdez)) a church in north las vegas isn't letting a likely case of arson stop them from helping the community. fire officials say local and federal agencies are looking into the overnight fire of holy trinity a-m-e church. reporter brittany edney shows us church's plan for moving forward. ((dave courvoisier)) a 13-year-old valley teen is dead after taking her own life...jumping from a casino parking structure thursday morning. ((denise valdez)) >> and her mother believes she was bullied. stefanie kruger never thought she would have to bury her own child. 13-year old maria took her own life... her mom says she was bullied. ((stefanie kruger/mother: "i would have moved her from that school if i had thought for one second she was that unhappy. ((elaine chabrow/grandma: "my sole focus besides my daughter and the rest of the family is to get to the bottom of what happened to this beautiful light angel." )) ((denise valdez)) >> the teen's mom now lives with a heavy heart. wishing she could have done more to help her daughter. and pleads with parents to get kids the right help if there are any signs they could be thinking ((dave courvoisier)) one week from today.. we should know the fate of clark county schools.. and the plan to reorganize. if 12 lawmakers that form the legislative council have their way in one week, expect these changes by next fall: each c-c-s-d school governs itself. each principal decides hiring and funding, with a team of teachers, staff and parents. and associate superintendents will oversee 25 schools, answering to the district superintendent. ((senator michael roberson this is more about to the schools. for the 1st time atleast 80 percent of all unrestricted general fund education dollars will go directly to the schools and after the 1st year it will be atleast 85 percent )) ((dave courvoisier)) >>ccsd trustees say they're also worried about equal opportunities for all. advocates argue title one schools will get more money. this transformation would be in place august of next year./// ((denise)) an uncertain future awaits students and faculty at i-t-t technical college. the school has stopped enrolling new students and is facing sanctions that could put it out of business. we want to make it clear... there is no official announcement of any closings. linda montgomery, president of the las vegas learning center says itt-tech's problems make the whole industry look bad. ((denise valdez)) >> in texas, two students were hit by vehicles getting off the school bus -- and both were caught on camera. erin cargile tells us luckily --neither student was seriously hurt. keep your eyes on the crosswalk. this is a 12-year-old boy seconds after getting off the school bus monday - at south first and st. elmo. (amy mcfadden/son hit by driver) "i kept shaking because it's the most horrible thing to watch ." there's nothing worse than that phone call where all you can ha child crying (amy mcfadden/son hit by driver) "this driver was not some evil person. he was doing what we all do. we all have days when we're in a hurry." just 24 hours later in west austin, another driver hits another student. this time you can see the stop sign is out, the bus lights are flashing, and police say the bus driver was laying on the horn. (michael masue, witness) "ugh, yeah, that's how i remember it ." michael masue was in his car stopped behind the bus masue/witness) "my heart was racing it was just so intense. he got knocked i think 10 feet towards my car he rolled to the side of my driver side window." michael called 9-1-1, then realized he went to middle school with the 17-year-old laying on the road and goes to high school with the 16-year old girl who was behind the wheel. (michael masue, witness) "she was mortified she thought she killed him. she came out of the car crying af tried to reassure her he seemed ok at the time ." the new driver told michael on scene she was confused about the law. (michael masue, witness) "she didn't know that you had to stop for the bus stop coming from the opposite way." a traumatizing lesson to learn. (michael masue, witness) "i hope it will be a wake up call to more people." ((denise valdez)) >> 17-year-old was taken to the hospital by ambulance to get checked out. in both cases, the drivers stayed at the scene and were cited by police./// ((tedd florendo)) ((( the heat returns this week and it's hotter today than around the region. winds increased as forecasted as well but still remain below windy criteria. we still are dry with single digit humidity readings. and we're a few degrees warmer than yesterday. ................................ .. afternoon highs hot around the valley with temps hottest over to the east side of town where we're lower in elevation. especially for the east and southeast neigbhorhoods. the foothills and certainly the mountains where it appears to be coolest. ................................ .... regional temps also stayed hot with hottest temps in laughlin and death valley. although we definitely got hotter for the colorado river valley from mesquite all the way down to the searchlight. more tolerable temps in the 90's for the central great basin where they also had some wind develop too. ................................ ... ..... u.s. temps show get stay hot only in the desert southwest but the southern plains with feels like temps in the 100's. still hot also for the northern states with muggy conditions there down to the deep south. .. ............................. .... .......... doppler radar looking clear again across the region with most of the precip up in the pacific northwest. looking at the high mexico/texas to continue to progress northward and bring hotter weather this week; specifically late week. looking at the next system to roll through the north part of the state to increase wind this weekend and especially next week. .......................... ......... ................ here's the forecast. 80's by morning with clear skies and winds finally calming down by morning wit wake-up temps in the 80's again. tomorrow expect a high of 106 again and hotter. we could see some light breezes returning again tomorrow. ................................ ... .................... extended temps show hotter temps as we head through the week. expecting those temps to peak near 110 by the end of the workweek. staying dry as no monsoon has been seen. wind could week, but it's next week and late weekend when we do anticipate stronger winds. monsoon could return late next week or the week after according to long range models but that could change as well. ((chris maathuis)) in some of the other games tonight... outside of gorman's big win... there isn't a bigger win by a nevada school than what happened tonight in austin texas. rich muraco takes his liberty patriots into the lone star state and comes away with a huge 21-14 win over westlake. westlake is one of the better teams in texas, but that's now two-for-two for nevada beating texas. last week, gorman, this week they announced the score tonight at gorman and all the gael fans cheered when they heard it. at arbor view tonight, the orem tigers visiting the aggies. orem is located next to provo. traditionally they've been solid, but there was a big shakeup with the tigers program. so arbor view was ready and took advantage. quarterback hayden bollinger up top to michael sims down inside the one.. but they couldn't punch it in... third down pass out of bounds, they settle for the field goal. later in the second, from 25 yards out... it's bollinger hooking up with and it's arbor view winning 31-6. they're one of the solid program in the valley. lots of offense at mojave tonight... they were hosting legacy high... the longhorns rollin along. sam "bam" turner... the 5-9 bull gives legacy a 15-zip lead. but the rattlers charge back... to dequincy michell and he scores.. it's 15-6,. but then the longhorns tack on one more, roberto valenzuela gets to the one... they'd punch it in and they go on to win it 22-6. if you like defense you would've liked the game at desert oasis tonight. points were really hard to come by. fans were put to sleep by halftime. desert oasis down 6-0 to muir high school from pasadena... but making a last minute charge.. kordell wooten takes the ball to the 5.. with 2 seconds lefl and muir stuffs them.. 6-0 the final ((chris maathuis)) nhl fans in vegas are sittin on pins and needles waiting for bill foley to reveal his team name and logo. probably a month away from that. we're also less then a month away from ground breaking on the new practice facility in summerlin. we learned the date could be october 15th, but that date could be pushed up, which is good news. also foley and other officials had a meeting with the nhl and and from what we know tonight, they need one more review... so everything is coming together nicely... it's getting close. ((chris maathuis)) a boston anchor got into a surprise wrestling match on air. w-b-z-tv sports anchor steve burton was leading a segment when the alligator in his the reptile was apparently spooked by a nearby crocodile. the alligator started to flail in an attempt to escape burton's grasp. but the gator was no match for the anchor. burton held firm until another herpetologist could take over./// ((dave courvoisier)) here's another strange story that might make you a little sick in the stomach. a home in madison county, indiana is condemned -- after more than a removed. the homeowners were living in feces up to three inches deep. it was so bad firefighters needed hazmat suits and oxygen tanks to do their work../// ((denise valdez)) a kansas woman is celebrating big! edna shaffer is 107. that's her in the wheelchair. family and friends from all over the country are in topeka to take part in a three-day celebration to honor shaffer. the birthday girl enjoys playing cards...watching movies and traveling. shaffer says she thanks the lord for all the blessings--it's one of her secrets to living a long ((dave courvoisier)) that's all for us live at eleven.
