((nia wong)) >> dave and denise... we've seen drivers ignoring warnings not to drive through flood waters throughout the evening. take a look at what we saw just a few hours ago... we went to both of those intersections you just mentioned... and despite several inches of water in the road... many through while others remained in place. you may be thinking 'what's a few inches of rain in the road?' well, as we've seen time and again in southern nevada, it doesn't take much to wash out the road... and what you may think is just a little rain could be much more... and suddenly you find yourself in a life or death situation and in need of emergency assistance. according to the clark county fire department's alarm page, there were at least four swift water rescues this evening -- the good news, no reports of any injuries. a visitor we spoke to wasn't prepared for this type of weather: (( chris dent/vegas vacation rained out: "it's been pretty rough. the water's been interesting. driving through it is something in some spots about a foot high." )) ((nia wong)) >> now's a good time to remind you of the "turn around, don't drown" campaign. driving into flood waters can not only ruin your car... but if it's deep enough you can get trapped and find yourself in need of help. if you're found to be responsible for a rescue, you can be fined under state law. (finney) there is an expression that everyone uses here in the u.s., "spreads like wildfire," yet we don't even know how wildfires spread. ((dave courvoisier)) the forest service spent an unprde record 10.1 million acres last year. but finney's research shows putting out every fireis not working. ( ce:) are we making it worse? mf: we are making it worse. by fighting these fires we unfortunately enter what's called the fire paradox, and that is the harder you try to suppress them, the worse they get when they do happen. ((dave courvoisier)) under normal conditions fires thin out forests. but by constantly putting them out, more unburned brush is left for the next fire. more so-called prescribed fires to burn off excess vegetation or simply let some natural fires burn. in a statement to cbs news, the forest service says it "agrees that managed and prescribed fires are important tools...", but "our capacity to complete this work is restricted by the budget", which is allocated by congress. the agency says there are also liability issues with state and local governments with more developers pushing to build homes closer to fire-prone area inevitable. if we convince ourselves that it's not, then we essentially have a repeat every year of the same situation. ((dave courvoisier)) for nowscientists hope by setting these controlled fires in the lab, they'll better understand how to manage them in the forest. last week the biggest concern was the bluecut fire... tonight we're talking about rain, tedd. ((tedd florendo)) looking outside it looks temps remain warm but muggy do to the humidity. wind also stay light and the smoke plume from the blue cut fire has drifted way more west and away from the area. dewpoint remain high enough for the risk of more t'storms maybe this evening, but should be ................................ ... .................. temps around the valley in the 90s through many neighborhoods with the warmest temps typically over to the east side of the valley and southeast sections. not as warm for the foothills and the northwest part of the region. we're below normal for temps but not much. the clouds also helped keep a lid on any daytime warming from the sun. ....................... ............ ................... regional temps also stayed warm but still hot over in death warm down the colorado river valley from mesquite all the way down to laughlin. more tolerable temps in the central great basin with those areas inthe 80's to low 90's. ................................ ... ................ radar shows very little convective t'storm occurring. a shield of clouds helped keep a tight lid on any storm development this morning and afternoon. now with clearing and us getting to the hottest part of the day, there is still slight chances for t'storms mainly east of i-15 and better chances for southern clark county. mostly in mohave county. ....... ............................ .................. futurecast shows we get a bete tomorrow but it's sunday we see the return of showers and storms chances due to an area of low pressure that will drift in some rain from the south. shower and storm chances also return for monday through tuesday as well before we see a drying trend by wednesday and more sunshine. ................................ ... ................. so the forecast is calling for temps in the 80's by morning with clouds and some clearing. expect muggy condtions this evening with slight hit and miss shower chances as well. tomorrow expecting temps near 100 and partly to mostly sunny through the day. very slim chances for showers ................................ ... ..................... extended forecast calls for temps to drop even more by late weekend and early week with high in the 90's still. showers chances return by sunday and through early week with sunday and monday being our best shot for some rain. drier mid to late week next week as temps climb back to near average isn't easy ((deni the rebels have strugged for decades. maybe the fortunes are about to change.
