And focusing as well on healthy habits within these travel trips and things like that you know hiking and jogging and biking or doing whatever you can do to keep healthy and stay on a good track so you can also follow me on Facebook if you missed any part of the show you can also go to 960 The Patriot and catch me on pod cast All right so let's get started with my vacation vault I know many of you are starting to plan your summer vacation and even looking for vacation destinations coming up for spring break in a few weeks and my next vacation Vall segments I'm going to start exploring beaches in the u.s. Specifically best kept secret beaches you can do a road trip to now by the way this one is. A little further we're going to start with a little further one but I really like it and but just on a side note did you know that the u.s. Has over 12000 miles of coastline so it's little wonder that the u.s. Is known for being a top notch beast destination from truck a tropical paradise is to rugged coves state parks and Sioux perve serve sports there's a full spectrum when vacationing on the shores of America so many people traveling these days can be hard to find a special place to relax but I know of some of the country's best hidden beaches have been there so listen up folks this week in my vacation I'm exploring. Now this one I can say for those of you that are regular listeners I sometimes have problems pronouncing some of these places but he is pretty simple and Honda like the little little little cars that we you know. That go forever so all right now that's a state park the park encompasses over $500.00 acres and it's allocated off an offshore island in the lower Florida Keys the channel at the island's west end is one of the deepest natural channels in the Florida Keys. And the island is virtually uninhabited it was founded in 1961 and the park occupies most of the island but here Honda has some of the best beaches in the Florida Keys with swimming in the Atlantic Ocean and Florida Bay in fact Hondas state park can boast it was the 1st ever Florida site to make number one on Dr Beach is famous for best beaches list that was in 1902 nearly 500 years. After the 1st Spanish explorers passed and gave its name deep bay the beach is 2.5 miles long and I know unless you have time this is a little far to go but you know it's really worth it but you're doing a road trip it's his is what it's going to take you it's driving straight through without stopping on eastbound I 10 is a 36 hour drive or almost 2500 miles so I'd recommend flying to Miami or you know Fort Lauderdale one of those whatever you can by the way guys this is a money show as well you know we're all about saving money focusing on family and reconnecting with your friends and family so you know if it's cheaper to fly in a little further north extend that family trip but if you're on a tight timeline and you want to do just the shortest trip to get there I prefer the other way around but this is what you should do it can only at that point if you fly into Miami it's about 130 miles and should take you about 2 and a half hours to go to Key West now by the way I will say other times we're going to talk about some of these other areas and I wouldn't just stay in this one area but we're going to focus on this for this trip but my whole thing with these kind of things is rent the car get there and then explore other areas with your family lock them in that car so you're not just sitting on a beach one why 5 on your phone checking your email you know up in your apartment looking at the beach if that's you and you don't like the sun and everything you know you want to make sure that you're spending time with your family exploring and just relaxing So that's the thing but since the drive takes you along the Florida Keys highway or rather the Highway one and it passes through some 40 plus islands before reaching Key West journey time from Miami to Key West can take up to 4 hours depending on when you go I have experienced this Miami traffic and getting in. Now out of there by the way is a horrible it's one of the worst so it's actually reminiscent of l.a. So don't try to fly in at those times of you know rush hour because you will be stuck what would normally take you you know 2 and a half hours can take you. And then some so the 4 hours I think you know is is generous but it can be longer now driving to the park you most likely take the 7 Mile Bridge which is the longest of $42.00 bridges that are part of the Overseas Highway section of route one this runs through the Florida Keys it starts in marathon at night and continues through 2 little Duckie and the lower keys if you take a drive on the bridge you will be treated to a scenic ride that is exactly as advertised 7 miles long the bridge exists now was built between 19081982 to replace the damaged and aging former structure which still exists the older bridge originally was constructed as a railroad bridge and is now used as fishing piers that tourists and locals alike can it take advantage of to fish or enjoy this particular sunsets when traveling the span. Now I should note the park is still undergoing restoration efforts after Hurricane Irma in 2017 so portions of the park are not open to the public for those of you that have been there you know I love Florida I hear this from a lot of people that's why they don't live there they don't want to deal with evacuating again blessed that we live in the Valley of the sun and a beautiful state Arizona we don't have real natural disasters but hey Florida is a place to visit and you know to be honest with you many of you go to Europe and do some of these other things and while that's important we need to support our own economy here in the u.s. And support our own people so you know traveling within the u.s. And really seeing what's in our country is super important so now despite the location in the Gulf of Mexico the Florida Keys aren't as famous for their beaches as you would think as well one experience at the state park. You'll be wondering why it's not as popular so the surgery I'm sorry the sugary white sand and crystal clear waters evoke images of an island in the Caribbean you won't need to snorkel to spot a colorful fish but if you have then you'll be in for an even bigger treat this snorkeling there is really awesome you can see through to the bottom of the of the ocean at most points on the keys like especially when you're closer to the shore so visitors to the park enjoy bomi sea breezes that caress the shore is year round kayaks and snorkeling gear can be rented and boat trips to the reef for snorkeling excursions are available the park is also an excellent place to observe waiting for waiting birds and shore birds while the sand in c. Ter is seen nature center introduces nature lovers to the islands plants and animals now as the sun sets imagine this the island of but he a Honda becomes a magical place like Disneyland for adults. During the day most folks are gazing upon the beautiful water or swimming in the sapphire waters the night time will offer you a chance to discover the night sky above campers and overnight Marina guests are encouraged to wander up old bridge walk the shorelines or just lay back in their lounge chair and take in the beautiful night sky now the next time I go I'm bringing my telescope that's what's going to be happening because it's a little known fact that the Honda is the darkest location for stargazing in the Florida Keys twice a month be state park host 2 stargazing programs the Friday night program is hosted by the Florida Keys astronomy club and park ranger the local club sets up telescopes for campers to view the galaxies constellations and nebulous and so much more I just want to say yes but it's nice to have your own little set up and I love my Dell as cope each of these club members is very knowledgeable though and you are sure to see and learn something new Saturday night programs lead campers up the old 100 bridge for viewing the program schedules vary based on the moon phase and generally occurring year as the new moon and the 1st Quarter Moon the state park although it is not just for beach goers or star gazers it has something for just about everyone it's a place for day trippers and overnight campers for beach goers seafaring sojourn seafarers and nature lovers so I got a little time twisted there the state park is home to over $100.00 species of Flora including rare yellow satinwood Keach key thatch palm and the endangered small flower a little a thorn along with the largest known stand of Florida silver palms hikers have their choice of 3 separate trails but he Honda's State Park is also a birder's paradise so for those of you that are big into birdwatching bring your. There's you don't have to pack your telescope just bring the binoculars will easier to pack it's home to endangered white Crown pigeons and during the fall and winter migration to more than 30 species of would warrant dollars flocks for those of you birders I know I just you know trampled all over how to say that would. Flocks of shore bird gather to feed in the rack of line at the low tide. Glide over the ocean in the fall as well that's really cool I have not been there in the fall so I would be very interested to see that because we have hawks here in Arizona there is also a sand and sea Nature Center with. With historic videos environmental activities and displays including coral crab sea urchins sponges and turtles that is great for small children and there are also parks staff on hand to answer questions during Operation hours from 10 am to 4 pm. Super Bowl champion signed the most important contract of his life to serve in the Army National Guard or that a lot of military My family is very part of what my family is up for a long time I want to go out there make a difference I don't find that for him on a desktop for me is pretty easy decision to make and then the opportunity to serve my community serve my country was as I said all the way to learn how to be part of the Army National Guard law going to National Guard dot com sponsored by the Arizona Army National Guard shared by the Arizona Broadcasters Association and this station. I'm a firefighter a teacher I'm a farmer I'm a barber And good evening Arizona Welcome back to the Victoria McVeigh show we are talking about but he Honda State Park Campground and I'm just going to have a moment of confession. You know I didn't get to do this when I was there but due to the drive to get to the Keys. It is it is going to be pretty long if you don't go as I said. In the in the non rush hour times and be aware Miami drivers are a little little scarier than Arizona drivers but the thing is is that what I did look at as a kind of a bucket list item because the keys are so just a beautiful set of little islands I guess they're America's model the can I say that and so essentially I wanted to do a seaplane and that's a bucket list item for me so for those of you that have done a seaplane in the Keys if you could please go to my Facebook site and respond that that was that worth the money or was it not was it a really worthwhile bucket list item was that something that was just wow I mean yeah they serve you lunch but you know it's. Good to hear from other people when you have a something that's a fairly expensive that you want to do if it was worthwhile so if you would please go to my Facebook site I'm in a ask that this week about requesting if the seaplane and Florida Keys is worth it so hopefully we'll get some good responses on that now if you're going to be camping in the state park campground here's the deal 3 camping areas within the park provide over 70 campsites for both tent and r.v. Campers as well as 3 duplex cabins this is what my husband will choose. If he was ever a camper that sits that overlooked the bay the 5 cabins have 2 bedrooms and can accommodate up to 6 people each that's great for families campsites and cabins can be reserved as much as 11 months ahead of time through Reserve America that's reserved America so dogs are allowed at the state park campground but they must be kept on a leash no longer than 6 feet when outside your vehicle now if you bring your own bike you can bicycle around the park it's more than 3 and a half mild heart surface road that runs the length of the Honda and anglers can cast their lines from shore or launch boats at either of the 2 boat ramps but he park recommends fishing off the old sea walls on either side of the old bridge if you like to bottom fish for snapper or grouper the shallow sands are flat and better for fly fishing or bone fish and they permit. But Barracuda I don't particular Barracuda scare me so for those of you that like that Ok Many of you have seen those they have teeth in the front there. So all catch must meet state regulations for size number and season spear fishing and collecting tropical fish is prohibited that's a cool thing for the kids and Tarpon fishing in the area rates among the best in the state my children love Tarpon they always talk about it so. That's something we're going to look into the next time charter boats and guides are generally available for hire during tarp or tarp or tarp and seas and why haven't these tongue twister stay so water fishing licenses are required in Florida though in addition to the park concession runs multiple days snorkeling trips to the key All right I'm going to say this over Lou key Dam I saying that right does anyone know boy I always mess up these words Lou key marine sanctuary if I offended anyone because that's your family name it's l o o e so the unique u. Shape and varying depths of the reef make a great site for beginner and veteran divers the colorful reef is this is the site of more than 50 species of coral including staghorn star brain and fire corals and more than $150.00 species of fish now for those of you that don't go snorkeling you know do yourself a favor and if you're scared put on some float or one of those vests and just do the goggles and swim out there and look down Ok all you got to do is float out
