sprint to wrap up a challenging list of unfinished business. >> they're scrambling to take on tax reform and try to keep the government running. they have several things on their agenda. president trump poised to meet tomorrow on capitol hill with leaders from both parties as he looks for his first major legislative victory. we get more now from abc's gloria riviera. >> reporter: with the end of 2017 in sight, congress has a lengthy and ambitious to-do list, and not much time to do it. after a lengthy thanksgiving break, congress will be back on the hill on monday with only three weeks to get most of the work done before christmas recess begins on december 15th. >> we're going to give the american people a huge tax cut for christmas. hopefully that will be a great big beautiful christmas present. >> reporter: a number of gop senators have expressed concern over the tax bill. >> what i want to see is the information to prove the economic growth we're going to get with all of our tax revisions. >> reporter: the house recently passed a $1.4 trillion tax cut, and the senate is likely to vote on its own version later this week. lawmakers will also have less than two weeks to come up with a funding plan to avoid a partial government shutdown december 8th. and the pressure will be on by friday for lawmakers as some state officials say the holdover cash, which funds health care for children of low-income families, will run out unless congress acts facts. on december 12th, all eyes will be on alabama in the senate the race between republican candidate roy moore, accused of sexual abuse of a minor, and democrat doug jones. moore drawing the ire of former nba star and alabama native, charles barkley. >> i'm not even going to get into the women stuff, but a guy, how can you be a white separatist and represent all the constituents in your state? >> all right, that's gloria rivera for us. thank you. and senator al franken is set to get back to work today with the rest of congress after breaking his silence about allegations that he inappropriately touched four women. franken told minnesota public radio he is ashamed, but has no plans to leave the senate. franken called the photo he took with leeann tweeden as she slept inexcusable. he says groping women isn't something he'd do intentionally and would work to regain the trust of the people. on the house side, democrat john conyers is stepping aside as the ranking member of the house judiciary committee. he denies that he sexually harassed at least three women who worked for him, but said he didn't want to be a distraction. congressiers is promising to fully cooperate with the ethics committee now investigating the claims and he's urging colleagues to allow him due process. president trump offered up another tweet helping roy moore despite that the sexual allegations. the president couldn't reveal this week even if he would campaign for moore. many are saying this morning that moore is at the heart of a trump family feud. here's abc's lana zak. >> reporter: the president increasingly at odds with his own family and party. as he boosts the campaign of accused child molester roy moore by urging alabama voters to defeat democrat doug jones tweeting the last thing we need is a schumer/pelosi puppet who . is weak on crime, weak on the border, jones would be a disaster, adding liberal jones would be bad. >> that's a political decision by the president. he's definitely trying to throw a lifeline to roy moore. >> reporter: the former alabama judge faces accusations of sexual misconduct by eight women, some of whom were teenagers at the time. moore denies those allegations. >> well, he denies it. look, he denies it. you're talking about -- he said 40 years ago, this did not happen. so, you know -- >> reporter: the president's comments in sharp contrast to those of his daughter ivanka trump who earlier told the ap there's a special place in hell for people who prey on children. i have yet to see a valid explanation and i have no reason to doubt the victims' accounts. now abc news has learned that the president was not pleased by ivanka's quick reaction. and in the coming days, president trump says he'll decide whether he'll hit the trail for moore. >> i can tell you, you don't need somebody who is soft on crime like jones. >> reporter: that decision expected as more than 20 republican senators are calling for moore to drop out. >> it is pretty clear to me that the best things that roy moore can do for the country is to move on. >> reporter: the president's response to moore complicated by his own accusations of sexual impropriety, including that "access hollywood" tape. >> when you're a star, they let you do it. you can do anything. >> whatever you want. >> grab them by the [ bleep ]. >> reporter: when the tape serviced, the president acknowledged that he said it and apologized. but sources confirm to abc news, the president has recently questioned the authenticity of the tape when speaking to advisers and a republican senator. but there is no evidence that the tape is inauthentic or doctored. and one source close to the president confirms that he, too, has heard him question those access hollywood tapes. kendis, diane. >> our thanks to lana there reporting. a man in custody for an alleged road rage shooting incident in florida says he actually feared for his life. kwanzaa donald is charged with two counts of attempted murder and wounding a 37-year-old man and his niece in their car there on the turnpike florida. he reportedly told police their vehicle resembled one whose occupant had been shooting at him during his trip from texas. donald allegedly also said that he lacked sleep and food and was dehydrated. the victims received only minor injuries. big tobacco companies are again running commercials on tv, but a very different kind of ad than those in the past. instead, the court-ordered spots will warn you about the dangers of smoking. originally, a judge ordered the companies to admit they intentionally deceived the public about the dangers of smoking, but the message has been changed during 11 years of appeals. >> a federal court has ordered altria, r.j. reynolds, to make this statement. about the health effects of smoking. smoking kills on average, 1200 americans every day. more people die every year from smoking than from murder, aids, suicide, drugs, car crashes and alcohol combined. >> the tobacco companies are also running full-page newspaper ads in major cities. as a result of the appeal, the companies no longer have to admit to lying. still the american cancer society calls this a pretty significant moment. former president george h.w. bush has achieved another milestone. this >> no, that's the inside-out part. >> round and round. from abc news, this is "world news now." >> i guess it depends on your perspective of life. it's not necessarily -- >> merry christmas, everybody. >> oh, yeah. yes. it's not necessarily that the tree is upside down. >> i see. >> it's just that you are not. >> okay. >> boom, mind blown. >> we'll dig a little deeper into that one coming up. we're going to start things off with senator franken speaking out after ten days of silence and heading back to work faced with allegations from four women. >> he says he is ashamed but has no plans to resign. this as congressman john conyers gives up his leadership role on the powerful house judiciary committee amid claims of sexual harassment. abc's gloria riviera has the details from capitol hill. >> reporter: senator al franken facing questions for the first time since sexual misconduct allegations against him. this interview on radio station wcco. >> i have a long way back. i have a long way back to win back the trust of the people of minnesota. i've let people down. >> reporter: four women have accused the minnesota democrat of inappropriate touching. franken also spoke with minnesota public radio. >> this whole thing has been, you know, embarrassing. and it's been difficult. this has been a shock to me. i would never intentionally do that. >> reporter: two of the women claim he groped their backsides during a campaign photo op at a state fair. >> i take photographs at the state fair with thousands of people. i'm someone who hugs people. >> reporter: but lindsey menz did not think the contact was incidental. >> al franken pulled me in towards him and then put his hand on my rear. >> reporter: leeann tweeden in this photo was the first woman to come forward. >> i am ashamed of that photo. she didn't have any ability to consent. she had every right to feel violated by that photo. >> reporter: franken says he is not resigning and will fully cooperate with the ethics committee investigation. long-serving civil rights advocate, michigan representative john conyers. stephanie says she was repeatedly be rated and belittled by him. >> i walked into his office and to brief him on something and he was walking around in his underwear. >> reporter: john conyers says he will step down as a ranking member on the house judiciary committee, but not giving up his seat. i deny these allegations he said. i very much look forward to vindicating myself. nancy pelosi still standing by conyers. >> we are strengthened by due process. just because someone is accused, and was it one accusations, was it two? john conyers is an icon in our country. >> gloria rivera reporting from capitol hill. and overhauling the way congress deals with sexual harassment is part of an agenda that's facing lawmakers as they return today from the thanksgiving recess. they're also hoping to avert a government shutdown by december 8th. and tomorrow president trump heads back to the capital to meet with both parties to discuss a number of issues, including tax reform. the senate is expected to vote on the massive republican tax cuts plan this week, but there are many democrats not on board. >> written in secret, this bill is being rushed to the floor without hearings or the chance for the american people to weigh in. >> and some republicans have expressed concerns over the tax bill, which includes a repeal of the obamacare mandate that requires all americans to buy health insurance. as for the funding legislation, there's a bipartisan effort to attach immigration policy that would legalize the so-called d.r.e.a.m.ers. prior to hitting the hill tomorrow, the president will talk tax cuts over lunch today with senate finance committee members. you see him there returning from mar-a-lago. and his appointment of mick mulvaney has been challenged. the court fight stems from another appointment to lead the agency. that one was made the by its departing director who resigned on friday. the fbi apparently failed to notify many u.s. leaders who were targeted by russian ra hackers. "the associated press" found that senior lawmakers weren't aware of the cyber hacking attempts. they only learned of those attempts when the ap told them. the group has connections to the kremlin and has been linked to democratic party hacking e-mails. the fbi has declined to comment. a couple of scary incidents at two different malls. first up, in suburban dallas, a report of theft from a sunglasses hut, when he noticed what he thought the suspect was pointing a gun at him. the weapon later turned out to be a replica. the officers tweeted it is impossible to tell a real gun from a fake one in a matter of seconds. then on the east coast, gunfire forcing the evacuation of a mall near new york city. a gun went off at the galleria in middletown new york. police don't think the shooting was intentional. the gun was pointed down, and they believe the bullet ricocheted off the floor. an orlando man is under arrest, charged with attempted murder after a shooting on the florida turnpike. the suspect reportedly told police he thought the car he shot up had followed him from texas and that the people inside were trying to kill him. abc's victor oquendo has more. >> reporter: florida police making an arrest in this apparent road rage shooting that left bullets in the side of a car. florida highway patrol charging kwanzaa donald with attempted murder. police say around 10:00 saturday morning, he was driving in a gray toyota camry and opened fire on a 37-year-old man and a 17-year-old girl sitting inside this red chevy impala. >> the caller now advising two patients. from what we're getting, the shooter is not on scene. >> reporter: miraculously, both suffering minor injuries. somehow avoiding a direct hit, wounded the by glass and bullet fragments. >> we're getting multiple calls on this. >> reporter: troopers shutting down the turnpike, gathering evidence and searching for that car and driver. police making an arrest after viewing surveillance video. both victims are expected to make a full recovery. the advice of florida highway patrol, do not engage other drivers. you never know if they're armed. victor oquendo, abc news, miami. overseas now, there were apparently several warnings before that deadly attack on a mosque in egypt. local village elders say they had been told to stop collaborating with government security forces and also to stop practicing rituals associated with a different muslim sect. so far, isis has not claimed responsibility for this attack, the deadliest in egypt's modern history. and here in the u.s., railroads are taking extra security measures after word they could be targeted by isis. the terror group is calling the nation's rail system one of america's easiest targets and it is calling on its followers to attack traines and possibly derail them. philadelphia officials taking this seriously, even use drones to monitor for potential threats. transit police there say the drone is the best way to patrol the tracks without having to walk them. a flight from germany to new jersey made an unexpected stop in london after several passengers suddenly fell ill. the affected passengers complained of feeling lightheaded. they were treated and released, but the flight did not continue. all passengers were put in hotels for the night. no word on what may have caused that illness. in the meantime, a record number of americans jammed the roads, rails and skies, heading home for the thanksgiving holiday. nine out of ten americans opted to drive this year with more than 45 million hitting the road. tsa expected to screen upwards of 3 million passengers just yesterday alone as amtrak deployed its entire fleet. and the roads today aren't expected to be much better. experts recommend avoiding travel between 4:00 and 6:00 p.m. i'm not sure if that means 4:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. probably more likely. >> it might. >> so if you're not traveling, today might be the best day yet for some holiday deals. >> that's right. if you missed out on those black friday bargains, you you could end up getting a better deal today on cyber monday. experts say the best deals will be on laptops, travel, small kitchen appliances and shoes! yes! >> yay! >> ladies, how pumped are you? cooperate with the senate ethics committee investigation. and on the house side, 88-year-old michigan representative john conyers sunday stepped aside as the top democrat on the house judiciary committee while congress investigates allegations that he sexually harassed female staff members. richard cantu, abc news, new york. and sources tell abc news that president trump is questioning the authenticity of that infamous "access hollywood" tape. that surface add month before he was elected. on the 2005 recording, the president is heard bragging in volar detail about his ability to grope women because he's a star. after the tape was made public, the president, then candidate acknowledged that he made the comments, dismissing it as locker room talk and issuing a rare apology. but sources say he recently told several advisers and a senator that the tape may be fake. attorneys for michael flynn are no longer communicating with president trump's lawyers. the two sides have been cooperating about special counsel robert mueller's investigation into russian election meddling. now the decision to stop sharing information could be a sign that flynn is moving to cooperate with mueller's investigation or that he's negotiating a deal for himself. and white house communications director hope hicks is believed to be the next trump insider to be questioned by mueller's investigators. the 29-year-old has been in the president's inner circle for several years. she worked in the trump organization after a stint in public relations during which one of her clients was the president's daughter. argentina's navy is not giving up hope for the crew of a submarine missing now for 12 days, even though that subonly had enough oxygen for ten days. officials also fear there was an explosion on board. meanwhile, the navy insists the ara san juan was in good condition and had just passed safety checks before departing. pope francis has his work cut out for him as he arrives in myanmar today. he has repeatedly spoken out in defense of the muslim minority, but it's not clear whether he'll refer to the muslims as rohingya, a term to which the myanmar government
