>> i understand what she did was wrong, but don't lock her up and throw away the key like everything she did was just awful. she loved me for 18 years. she cared for me for 18 years. >> reporter: alexis couldn't tell us how she found out out of concern that anything she says could be used against her mother. >> do you feel like you have to protect her in some ways? >> you feel obligated to protect them in any way possible, in any way possible. you can't say they did something wrong, let me -- you know, let me just forget about them and move on. it's not that easy. >> reporter: even though she did what she did? >> the president-elect made it clear to members of congress that he wants to repeal and replace obama care at the same time. it will be two different pieces of legislation. we want to repeal the individual mandates and the taxes and all those things that are putting a hardship on american families today. >> he will replace it with something that covers every american? >> the president-elect really believes in the power of the marketplace. he's a businessman. he understands the strength of the american economy. on the campaign trail he talked consistently about his enthusiasm for allowing americans to purchase health insurance across state lines the way we buy life and car insurance. >> that was martha raddatz with the vice president-elect. meanwhile, democrats being told they're not planning to pull the rug from anybody. but tom price had to answer tough questions about his stock trades. he insisted he did not know his broker was buying stocks in a drug company before introducing legislation that would have benefitted the company. and a new tragedy in the central part of that country. an avalanche covered a three story mountain hotel. authorities say at least 30 people are missing when the mountain of snow slammed into the hotel, they're having a difficult time getting rescue vehicles to the scene because roads are covered in deep snow. there are some fatalities, but they are hesitant to give a number. >> that same region has been struggling since last year's earthquake that killed about 300 people. just yesterday, four quakes hit that area, trapping some in their homes. all four are magnitude 5.1 or greater. felt 150 miles southwest of rome. 30 people are now missing. more rain is expected in houston after a deluge brought the city to a stand emergency crews made dozens of water rescues as thunderstorms washed out roadways. officials say they received more than 65 calls from stranded motorists. some were stranded for as long as five hours. and ice storm across parts of the northwest. freezing rain, ice and fallen trees forced the closures of roads and highways in oregon and washington state. and storms caused power outages in portland, oregon. what's the forecast looking like for other parts of the country? "world ♪ when you recognize something isn't right, make the call to the veterans crisis line at 1-800-273-8255 and press 1. welcome back. 2017 may end up holding a few financial surprises for all of us. welcome back. 2017 may end up holding a few financial surprises for all of us. and joining us now for a look at what will cost more and what will cost us less, let's hope for more less than more in 2017. our personal finance expert, vera gibens. hopefully it was an inexpensive new year. it sounds like a lot will be costing more. >> let's start with gas. gas prices expected to be the highest in three years. gas projecting prices are going to be $0.36 higher that year than last year. $2.49 a gallon. costing $52 billion more this year than last year. in some of the cities like new york, chicago chicago, seattle, york, chicago, seattle, you're talking $3 a gallon gas. big sticker shock for individuals. on the flip side, airfares are projected to be flat to down because of the competition between the legacy and budget carriers. some relief there. you're really going to feel the pain at the pump. if you're flying domestically, internationally, not so bad. credit card debt will cost more. >> that's going to be expensive in 2017. one interest rate hike in december. we're expecting three more. your variable rate debt is going to get expensive in 2017 if you carry a balance on your credit card. every quarter point hike cost you an extra $25 a year for every 1,000 in credit card debt. considering the average family has over $16,000 in credit card debt, you see it's going to be very expensive. >> we expect a few more hikes this year. >> three more. and when interest rates go up, you really see it almost immediately on the credit card. so that's one thing to look out for. on the flip side, annual fees have been following according to analysis, they're down five consecutive quarters because everyone is trying to get you to sign up. they're offering bonus points. >> and it's interesting you mention that that it goes up immediately with credit cards. with homes and home mortgages, it takes longer. >> here's the deal with home prices. home prices are projected to raise about 4% according to zillow. mortgage rates are at 4 %. projected to go to 5%. and every one percent change reduces affordability by about 10%. it's expensive if you're looking to buy a home. on the flip side, rent, while they've been rising are only projected to rise 1.4%. it's going to be some relief in sight if you're in a current unit you may not see any hike in your rent. if you're looking for a new place, you may actually have some wiggle room on price and negotiations. things like that. >> that $3800 studio apartment in new york. >> people are shelling out 50% of their income for rent in new york. >> i know. >> that's too much. >> plus the fees you pay initially. you say certain grocery staples. >> certain ones are going up. you're looking at fresh fruits, poultry, orange juice, olive oil sweets. overall groceries are expected to go up as much as 2.5%. some items going down, avocado. beef, pork going down. eggs declining a little bit in terms of price. peanut butter coming down a little bit. depends on what you're shopping for. overall they're projected to rise about 2.5%. >> what about health insurance? controversial one. >> those are going up. premiums and deductibles are going up whether you have a plan through an employer or buying through the exchange. generic drug prices are coming down. you hear about specialty drugs going up. you don't hear about generic prices going down, but that's going down. >> why?
