full details ahead. north korea has launched a medium-range ballistic missile into the sea. in defiance of u.n. resolutions. the tegs test-firing comes amidthreats by the north of preemptive nuclear strikes against washington and seoul. senator marco rubio says he's not interested in being any republican candidate's vice president. in his first comments since suspending his own presidential run, rubio also said he won't be running to be governor of florida. and the state of oregon says it has far exceeded expectations collecting nearly $3.5 million in tax revenue in its first month of legal pot sales. those are some of our top stories on this friday, march 18th. >> announcer: from abc news, this is "world news now." good morning, everyone. we're going to start this half hour with that explosive hearing on capitol hill over the water crisis in flint, lead in the water there. >> the michigan governor repeatedly apologized, but rick snyder testified that he was repeatedly told the problem wasn't severe. abc's mary bruce reports from the hearing. >> you need to take some responsibility because you screwed up. >> reporter: the blame game erupting on capitol hill. >> what does accountability look like for you? >> reporter: democrats laying into michigan governor rick snyder over the water crisis in flint. >> you were completely missing in action. that's not leadership. do you think? >> i was not missing in action, congressman. >> reporter: the governor acknowledging mistakes. >> i should have asked tougher questions. i should have done more. >> reporter: but for many, that's not enough. >> and there you are, dripping with guilt, but drawing your paycheck. >> do i think the system failed? yes. >> reporter: republicans blaming epa administrator gina mccarthy for being slow to act. >> sir, i'm not trying to shift responsibility or blame. >> yes, you have. this whole hearing that's all you've done. >> reporter: it's not just flint. a "usa today" investigation finds problematic lead levels over the past four years in the water of schools and day care centers in 42 states. one school in maine with lead levels 41 times higher than the epa limit. also in that hearing room, bus loads of families that came in from flint. they said that what they heard simply was not enough. they want someone to be held accountable. but even more, they simply want a solution to this devastating crisis. mary bruce, abc news, capitol hill. democrats on capitol hill are turning up the pressure on republicans to hold hearings at the very least on president obama's supreme court nominee. judge merrick garland made the traditional day after the nomination courtesy calls to senators on thursday. he steered clear of republicans. but visited with senate minority leader harry reid and vermont senator patrick leahy. >> there's no reason why, especially somebody as noncontroversial as the chief judge, there's no question this couldn't in the normal course could easily be done by memorial day. >> there's just simply too much at stake to leave this decision in the hands of a president who is headed out the door. >> republicans argue that the american people should have a voice in filling the vacancy on the high court. but democrats say the people made their choice when they re-elected president obama in 2012. let's move on now to the presidential race. law enforcement is looking into claims that donald trump's personal information has been hacked. the hacker group anonymous claims it's responsible for releasing trump's data including his social security number, cell phone information, as well as address. anonymous says it targeted trump because of what it calls his fascist and xenophobic agenda. hillary clinton has been declared the winner of tuesday's democratic primary in missouri. bernie sanders says he doesn't plan to ask for a recount in that close race. doing so would cost taxpayer money. and sanders showing no sign of stopping. he's campaigning today in the three states holding nominating contests next tuesday. we're going to get more now on the race from abc's bazi kanani. >> reporter: hillary clinton says she's getting worried calls from around the world about a possible donald trump presidency. >> i'm having foreign leaders ask if they can endorse me to stop donald trump. i say, no, i mean, this is up to americans. thank you very much. >> reporter: and donald trump is not easing fears about his candidacy when predicting riots if he loses the nomination at the gop convention this summer. >> i think you'd have riots. i think you'd have riots. i'm representing a tremendous, many, many millions of people. i think you would have problems like you've never seen before. i think it would -- i think bad things would happen. i really do. i believe that. i wouldn't lead it but i think bad things would happen. >> reporter: that statement denounced by republican leaders. >> to even address or hint to violence is unacceptable. >> he's running for president of the united states. this kind of language is an outrage. >> reporter: as for hillary clinton, there's a possible turning point coming in the race. "the new york times" reports president obama told donors it's nearing the time for sanders' campaign to come to an end and for democrats to unite behind hillary. the white house denies the president was endorsing clinton, but says the president did say this -- >> our success in november in electing a democratic president will depend on the commitment and ability of the democratic party to come together behind our nominee. >> reporter: bazi kanani, abc news, washington. the young man from virginia accused of joining isis says he made a bad decision. muhammad khweis was captured by kurdish forces in iraq on monday. he now says he was convinced by a girl to go to mosul. but once he made it there, he found he hated it and wanted to return to the u.s. and khweis says isis does not represent the true values of islam. the fbi now says that student faisal mohammad was inspired by isis, as well, before going on a stabbing rampage at the university of california merced campus last november. investigators found isis propaganda on a laptop belonging to mohammed and that he had visited several terrorist websites before launching his attack. but they say he acted alone when he stabbed and wounded four people before police shot and killed him. now that lawsuit against uber by michigan driver accused of killing six people. well, that turned out to be a hoax. the suit was supposedly filed by jason dalton who told police the uber app was controlling his mind. now officials in kalamazoo say dalton denied filing the suit and didn't authorize anyone to do so on his behalf. furthermore, the handwriting on the suit did not match dalton's. bizarre extreme weather across a number of states. >> we had an ice storm amid 60 degree temperatures in the south. you had lightning striking a plane en route to new york, and snow heading to the east coast just in time for spring. >> to wrap it all up, abc's lauren lyster joins us now. good morning. >> good morning. i'm not excited for that possible winter storm. let's start with that american airlines flight, shall we? so here's what happened. it was struck by lightning thursday evening. it was forced to make an emergency landing on the way from north carolina to new york. diverted to jfk airport. it was supposed to land at laguardia. the plane was damaged on the rear wing. you can kind of see it in those images. paengs on the ground still shaken. >> there was a flash of light and a big explosion. the plane dipped about 100 feet. i don't know. it just felt like i was on a roller coaster. >> i never had this kind of experience. it's the first time for me. >> it was pretty intense but i'm glad we made it safe, you know? >> meanwhile, severe weather also striking texas on thursday. look at that, hail the size of peas, golf balls, even baseballs. the ice storm blasted holes through car windshields. it snarled the morning commute. the hail was coming down so hard, reena and kendis, it actually killed several flamingos at the ft. worth zoo. and in mississippi, there were creepy foreboding clouds. they were warning of potential tornadoes thursday night. and next there is that storm that's headed for the northeast this weekend. maybe getting 1 to 3 inches of snow. >> wow. >> just in time for the first day of spring is sunday. >> it's unbelievable at this point we're still having to deal with it. talking about that lightning strike, it would seem that would be a common thing on planes. >> it would seem common? they're not satisfied with yesterday's capitol hill hearing on the city's water crisis. the tense hearing focused on the lead contamination of the city's water supply. most of the republican lawmakers hammering the state's republican governor for his role in the crisis. he apologized and said that he had been told the problems weren't severe. lawmakers weren't buying any of it. >> you were not in a medically-induced coma for a year, and i've had about enough of your false contrition and your phoney apologies. >> this was a failure of government at all levels. local, state, and federal officials. we all failed the families of flint. >> snyder dismissed demands that he resign as governor. the head of the epa was also slammed by lawmakers. gina mccarthy admitted her agency hadn't been quick enough to respond but refused to say the epa failed flint. a group of conservatives have released details of that secret meeting to try to stop donald trump. the three-hour discussion focused on ways to prevent him from being the nominee at the convention. there's an uproar among other republicans about trump's suggestion that there will be riots if he's denied the gop nomination at the convention. house speaker paul ryan made his thoughts clear on capitol hill. >> nobody should say such things, in my opinion, because to even address or hint to violence is unacceptable. >> john kasich called trump's comment an outrage. kasich's campaign today campaigned today in utah before that state's tuesday republican primary. ted cruz will be in arizona today despite his campaign acknowledging that trump will likely win that state next week. on the democratic side, hillary clinton has been declared the winner of tuesday's missouri primary. that means she went five for five on the night. bernie sanders says he will not contest the close result. and there's starting to be talk of democratic unity behind clinton's campaign. abc's cecilia vega reports. >> reporter: "the new york times" reporting president obama told a group of democratic donors it will soon be time for bernie sanders' campaign to end and for democrats to unite behind hillary clinton. the white house denying the president was endorsing clinton, but adding, he did say this -- >> our success in november, in electing a democratic president, will depend on the commitment and ability of the democratic party to come together behind our nominee. >> reporter: if that's hillary clinton, it will be full circle for two people who once battled. >> although we weren't able to shatter that highest, hardest glass ceiling this time, thanks to you, it's got about 18 million cracks in it. >> reporter: but then, that meeting at the white house. clinton joining his team. that moment in the situation room. and now clinton on the trail, campaigning on their close ties, helping herself, but helping his legacy, too. >> i think he doesn't get the credit he deserves for having fought for a recovery that is close an endorsement as you can possibly get. cecilia vega, abc news, new york. breaking news now from north korea where the military has fired a medium-range ballistic missile into the sea. the test-firing violates multiple u.n. security council resolutions that bans north korea from engaging in any ballistic and nuclear activities. it's certain to heighten tensions over north korea's nuclear ambition. and complicating the matters is the case of a student from virginia sentenced by north korea to 15 years of hard labor. diplomatic efforts are under way to free the student. here's abc's martha raddatz. >> reporter: the u.s. is quietly working to free american student otto warmbier. it was this security video that the north koreans say shows warmbier stealing a political banner like this one from the hotel where he was staying with a tour group. and taking it is a crime against the state. >> i have made the worst mistake of my life. >> reporter: the 21-year old uva student clearly shaken, now sentenced to 15 years of hard labor. >> please save my life. please think of my family. i am the oldest son in my family. >> reporter: now helping the family seek release, former crashed through the front of a south florida pizza restaurant injuring two people who were waiting to pick up their order. they both suffered serious cuts from broken glass. needed stitches, but they dollars to customers for an online prayer scam. >> the man running the website under fire for exploiting americans searching for prayer and counsel from religious leaders. prosecutors say all of it was fake. here's abc's neal karlinksky. >> reporter: more than 100,000 people seeking spiritual help flocked to this website, christian prayer center, desperate for the power of prayer and the help of pastors like john carlson. >> people are thinking their problems are going to be solved. >> reporter: the online church came with a digital collection plate, a fee of between $9 and $35 for prayers. washington state's attorney general says it was all a scam. pastor carlson is outraged too, saying his name was used without his permission. in fact, investigators say all kinds of fake religious leaders and testimonials were used to entice people to the tune of $7 million worth of paid prayers between 2011 and 2015. all of it, they say, the brainchild of this man, benjamin rogovy. >> at the basic level, it's a scam and he was asking people to give money under deceptive circumstances. >> reporter: rogovy couldn't be reached for comment. the website is closed saying, we thank you for all new this half hour, the unusual scene at a pennsylvania store. >> witnesses say they saw someone loading up a shopping cart and leaving the store without paying. police say a nun was shoplifting. and what's going on with madonna, from a concert starting two hours late to an embarrassed fan on stage. the negative attention she's getting in "the skinny" on this friday, march 18th. >> announcer: from abc news, this is "world news now." >> good friday morning, everyone. i'm ken can -- kendis gibson. >> i'm reena ninan. let's begin with the race for president and a seemingly concerted effort to stand in the way of donald trump. >> stopping the republican front-runner's progress was the subject of a three-hour long behind-closed-doors meeting of conservatives yesterday in washington, d.c. also on the agenda, the possibility of a third party presidential challenge. decisions will be made by anti-trump forces over the next few days about how to best use resources. >> trump also under fire for some of his comments earlier this week. abc's jonathan karl has more. >> reporter: donald trump was denounced by republican leaders in washington and ohio for predicting riots if he loses the nomination this summer at the convention in cleveland. >> nobody should say such things, in my opinion, because to even address or hint to violence is unacceptable. >> reporter: and ohio governor, john kasich, who is both running against trump and hosting this summer's convention told abc news, trump's talk is downright dangerous. >> to even imply that there could be violence if he doesn't get his way, you know, he's not running for the presidency of the wwe. he's running for president of the united states. and this kind of language is an outrage. >> reporter: and trump is under fire from an entirely different source. vladimir putin, the kremlin denouncing trump's latest attack on hillary clinton. this video splices together footage of clinton and the russian president. putin's spokesman accused trump of, quote, demonizing russia. it comes one day after trump said this when asked who he consults about foreign policy. >> i'm speaking with myself, number one, because i have a very good brain and i've said a lot of things. >> reporter: hillary clinton claims she's already getting worried calls from foreign leaders. >> i'm having foreign leaders ask if they can endorse me to stop donald trump. i say, no, i mean, this is up to americans. thank you very much. >> reporter: and another attack on trump, the hacker group anonymous claims they have hacked into his private information including his social security number, cell phone information, and address. the trump campaign has issued a statement responding to the alleged hack by anonymous saying, quote, the government and law enforcement authorities are seeking the arrest of the people responsible for attempting to illegally hack mr. trump's accounts and his telephone information. jonathan karl, abc news, washington. more politics now. we've heard from senator marco rubio for the first time since he suspended his campaign on tuesday night. rubio went home to miami after taking care of some business in d.c. before leaving the capital, he talked about his plans, which he says do not include most government positions. >> i'm not interested in being vice president. i don't mean that in a disrespectful way. i'm not going to be vice president. i'm not running for governor of florida. i'm going to finish out my term in the senate over the next ten months. >> after his senate term ends, it remains unclear exactly what rubio will do. he says he also did not make an endorsement among the republican contenders, although he did say he believes ted cruz is a conservative and that he liked john kasich. the u.s. is now accusing isis of committing genocide. secretary of state john kerry said the terror group is responsible for genocide against christians and other muslim groups in iraq and syria. the terror group is blamed for thousands of deaths. many forced to convert to islam or be killed. the announcement is not expected to change america's bombing campaign against isis. the young man from virginia accused of fighting for isis is speaking out in a new video. the man says he made a bad decision and is anxious to return home to america. here's abc's terry moran. >> reporter: accused by kurdish authorities of fighting for isis, the young american, born in virginia, tells a very different story. it was all about a girl, he told kurdish tv in iraq. >> i made a bad decision to go with the girl and go to mosul, because i wasn't thinking straight. >> where are you from?
