brought him within the gator's grasp and how he got away. and tale of the tape. the fatal crash involving venus williams' suv. why both sides say this video helps their case as venus tries to stay focused on winning at wimbledon. >> all i can do is try to be my best. hey, good morning, and it's another busy day for donald trump who is already hard at work over in germany on the second overseas trip of his presidency. >> and here he is just hours ago meeting with british prime minister theresa may and right now he is meeting with chinese president xi jinping but this is the meeting that everyone is talking about, trump sitting down shaking hands with russian president vladimir putin, a meeting he's describing as, quote, tremendous. >> in the aftermath of that meeting, there's something of a he said/he said going on. the russians say putin denied meddling in the american elections and that trump accepted that denial. the trump administration says that's not true. trump himself was asked about this discrepancy this morning. >> we're going to get to the bottom of that in just a moment. all of these meetings of world leaders at the g20 summit playing out against the backdrop of protests in the streets of hamburg, germany. more violent clashes overnight. we have team coverage this morning, and we start with abc's cecilia vega who is traveling with the president. cecilia, good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning, paula, from a very windy hamburg, germany. you know, this meeting with vladimir putin was only supposed to last for about 30 minutes. instead they had so much to say, it went on for 2 hours and 16 minutes. they were talking for so long, at one point the first lady popped her head in the room to see if they wanted to wrap it up. this morning, president trump is back to meeting with world leaders at the g20 summit just moments ago he sat down with china's xi jinping and another cruise face-to-face to comes amid heightened tensions with north korea and the president's growing frustration with china's unwilling it is to take a harder long with pyongyang. he also sat down with britain's sean spicer -- >> prime minister may and i have developed a very special relationship, and i think trade will be a very big factor between our two countries. so, i want to thank you very much. >> reporter: but even the president himself is among those still talking about yesterday's high-stakes face-to-face with russia's vladimir putin. i want to thank you very much. >> reporter: later this morning -- they said they had positive chemistry. he reached out for a handshake. there was smiling, small talk and before they got down to business, even a back pat. >> we look forward to a lot of very positive things happening for russia, for the united states. it's honor to be with you. thank you. >> reporter: putin returning the compliment. [ speaking a foreign language ] >> reporter: saying he too was pleased to meet president trump for the first time. later first lady melania trump also seen smiling and chatting with putin seated right next to him at dinner. behind closed doors, the white house says it was president trump who pressed the issue of russia's election meddling. but what happened next, each side tells a different story. tillerson says putin denied russia's involvement and the president stopped pressing. >> the president at this point, he pressed him, and then, you know, felt like at this point let's talk about how do we go forward. >> reporter: the russians say president trump heard putin's denial and, quote, accepted it. the white house says that is not the case. asked for his version of the story this morning -- >> mr. president, did the russians lie about your meeting yesterday. >> reporter: from president trump, no comment. yeah, no comment there. now the one thing both sides do agree on, a cease-fire deal reached for the southwestern part of syria. this is a deal reached by the u.s., russia and with the help of jordan also. rex tillerson says this is a sign that the two countries, russia and the united states, can work together but, paula, similar cease-fire deals like this one have not lasted very long and this country remains to be seen whether this might be different. >> thank you very much for your reporting, cecilia. trying to find a little bit of common ground there. and as world leaders hold their high-stakes meetings at the g20 summit, thousands of angry protesters have been hitting the streets of hamburg, germany. >> there was more chaos overnight and this morning more protests in the works. abc's james longman has been right out there in the thick of it. james, good morning to you. >> reporter: dan, paula, good morning. another huge night of unrest. but today is meant to be the main day of protest. people busing in especially for what they're calling the solidarity without borders. but parts of this city are looking like a war zone. overnight utter chaos on the streets of hamburg as world leaders prepare for another round of meetings. protesters setting up blockades, looting and attacking police. now it's nighttime and things have got a lot worse now on the streets. that's a water cannon hitting protesters behind us and they continue to throw things at the police. nearly 200 officers injured in clashes. more than 100 detained. facing a barrage of projectiles thrown from nearby roofs, officers in full riot gear making their way into buildings, arresting those inside. some 500 people looting this supermarket. during the day anti-globalization demonstrators marched peacefully expressing a range of grievances. >> i don't think three fascists who have arrived yesterday have the right to be in my city, namely, trump, putin and erdogan. >> reporter: but there is always violence at g20, anarchists railing against a perceived corrupt world order. we've got the police moving in, their water cannon just deployed. this is basically a big game of cat and mouse. this morning president trump a target of that criticism, complimenting german chancellor angela merkel and germany's response to the violence on the street. >> it's been really incredible the way things have been handled without much interruption despite quite a few people, and they seem to follow your g20s around. >> reporter: we think about 12,000 people are here so far, but more and more are arriving in order to disrupt those g20 meetings. i think we're in for another day of anger. dan. >> another day of anger. james, thank you very much and be safe out there. let's bring in abc news political commentator cokie roberts and abc news political analyst kristen soltis anderson, both of whom are in washington this morning. good morning to both of you. >> good morning. >> good morning. >> so, let's start here with this he said/he said situation, the differing stories about whether trump accepted putin's denial of meddling in our election. cokie, let me start with you. how problematic is this story line for trump? >> well, politically i don't think it's all that problematic because, of course, what happens is republicans agree with him and democrats disagree. that's where we are right now in this country. the real question is, excuse me, whether putin feels that he played trump, and we really won't know the answer to that question until we see what happens down the line on the world stage. but what lavrov, the russian foreign minister, said trump said which was that they've investigated this for months and there's not any evidence, that's something the president has said many times, so it's quite believable. >> though it would require democrats who for a long time have said they don't like russia. they think that russia is the reason hillary is not president, for them to accept what the russian foreign minister said, i don't think any american has reason to really believe that the russian government is the one telling the truth in this situation. >> and, ladies, both sides say they want to move on from the election meddling story. secretary of state rex tillerson saying it's, quote, an intractable disagreement but is moving on. is that actually doable? >> well, there's -- >> there's an investigation going on, you know, you've got robert mueller investigating the whole issue. you've got the senate talking about further sanctions against russia. i don't think there's any moving on happening and what was clear yesterday regardless of which side you believe is that there was no punishment talked about for russia. so moving on just says, well, whoever did it, we're forgetting about it. >> right, and we've got the 2018 midterm elections coming up. if russia is not on their best behavior, then this won't go away. there will be more calls for the u.s. to take further action. >> let's turn now to china because the president is going to sit down with the chinese president xi jinping this morning. china is, as we all know, north korea's most important ally and trump has been hoping publicly that xi will pressure the koreans to stop testing missiles and developing nuclear weapons, but it does not appear to be working. so, kristen, let me start with you on this one. do we expect any progress out of this meeting today? >> china has expressed that they think they're in a very tough position because their number one goal is stability. they do not want any kind of humanitarian or further economic crisis in north korea because that will just hurt them. so the interests of china are different than the interests of the united states and our other allies in the region, so it's -- i am not optimistic that there are any really good options at this point in north korea. >> but secretary tillerson said yesterday, in fact, that if china did not cooperate, that there were really no other options meaning i guess military options is where you go and, of course, that's terrifying, but china is playing a very big role at the g20, and their trade deal is getting worked out that's leaving the united states out. the united states is really isolated in this meeting, and that could be the biggest problem down the road. >> all right, cokie and kristen, ladies, thank you so much for your analysis and joining us on an early saturday morning from d.c. we appreciate i >> always good to be with you. >> all right. have a good morning, ladies. and also this morning, a major victory is in sight for iraqi security forces who are apparently set to declare victory in mosul at any moment. >> this would be a significant achievement for the security forces as mosul in iraq has long been an isis stronghold and abc's ian pannell is in erbil, iraq, for us this morning with the very latest. ian. >> reporter: paula, dan, iraqi tv are predicting victory in mosul will be declared within the next few hours. now, here's the most important caveat. we've heard that prediction repeatedly over the last week but it is true to say that they are very close, they're close to the river and when they get to the river, then isis will have been beaten in mosul. why is it taking so long? well, look, there are three main reasons. the first one is the terrain in the old city. we were down there the other day. it takes hours and hours just to move a few blocks. that's partly because so many of the buildings have been badly damaged, many of them have been destroyed. the second reason is the resistance of isis. don't forget they're taking on an enemy who's willing to stand and fight to the death. and the third key factor here is that there are still hundreds and hundreds of civilians trapped inside the old city. they're fighting from house to house from alleyway to alleyway. there are very close quarters and we were down there with the special forces general. i asked how close isis were to our current position. he looked down at his ipad and he said, about 15 yards away. so they have to go slowly to protect the civilians and they have to go slowly because of the terrain. and talking to civilians, the other key thing we've been seeing is hundreds and hundreds of people coming out today. they're shell-shocked. they've been neglected, abused and worse by isis and for them, they think this is no longer their home, which throws forward to the whole issue of how do you reconstruct? so this morning it's fair to say that the battle, the victory of mosul is close at hand. but the victory against isis, the war, will still take much longer. paula, dan. >> harrowing to see the pictures of ian navigating through mosul, also terrible to see those children. ian pannell, thank you very much. we move now back here stateside and a hostage crisis at a bank in georgia. >> the suspect who claimed to be a former marine called our atlanta affiliate with a long list of grievances. eva pilgrim joins us with more on how it all played out. good morning to you, eva. >> reporter: good morning. for hours a standoff outside a small army of police, inside a man holding two hostages claiming he had a bomb. that man now dead. those hostages safe. this morning we're learning why he walked into the bank. terrifying moments at the suburban atlanta wells fargo bank. a man carrying explosives taking hostages holed up inside. >> the insinuation was that the explosives were in the backpack that he carried and, of course, as you know, a backpack can carry a large amount of explosives. >> reporter: snipers and s.w.a.t. team members in position. guns drawn. the man inside, calling our atlanta affiliate wsb with a list of demands. >> why are you holding up the bank, sir? >> the department of veteran affairs stole my money. they committed fraud, and they stole my disability. i'm homeless and destitute. i just want my money back. >> reporter: that man, former marine named brian easley, who served two tours in iraq talking about his prior mental health issues upset he was about to become homeless. >> i told the bank at random, i was going to be out on the street, homeless, no food, no nothing. i don't have much money left. i'm not going to survive the rest of the month. >> reporter: linda seeva, a bank employee being held hostage, also getting on the phone. >> anything else that you can tell us? >> he's been very respectful. >> reporter: police surrounding the bank negotiating for him to come out. hours later tactical teams moving in, those hostages running out. easley was shot and killed. and investigators say it's still not clear if he had an explosive in the bag in the bank with him. >> eva, thank you so much for reporting on that. we want to turn now to a man's frightening encounter with a ten-foot alligator. we've been talking about this story, a little disturbing all morning. >> there's the alligator in question, and it happened on a golf course clamping down on the guy's arm and abc's erielle reshef has the story. >> reporter: a terrifying gator attack in florida. >> 911, that is the address of your emergency? >> a man was in the water diving for golf balls. needless to say, he was bit by a nine-foot alligator. >> reporter: scott lahodik has been diving for golf balls for 30 years, but this time things went horribly wrong at the 6th hole. >> the alligator had a hold of him pretty good. >> reporter: the 51-year-old thinking fast. >> the alligator grabbed his arm. started doing the death roll. he was able to punch it in the face, and it let go >> reporter: managing to wrestle himself from the jaws of the massive reptile and wriggle free, but not before the alligator left its mark. >> it was right at his arm. he says it's ugly. it's all the way down to the bone. >> reporter: emergency crews rushing to help as trappers caught the alligator that charged lahodik. >> you don't get too many over 10 1/2. he's probably 500, 600 pounds or more. >> reporter: this is far from the first alligator attack in florida. more than 30 people bitten from 2013 to 2015. >> my reaction is he shouldn't be in the water. that's for the gators. you hit golf balls in there. the gators eat them. leave the golf balls alone. >> reporter: lahodik lucky to be alive and lucky his instincts kicked in just in time. and lahodik was treated for his injuries to his arm, but he was released from the hospital on friday. the club where this happened says that he was hired to retrieve the golf balls from the water and was just doing his job when the gator attacked. it's a dangerous job, but somebody's doing it. >> maybe you do that job in the midwest or another part of the country where alligators are not present. >> not alligator infested waters. >> yes. all right. erielle. thanks. >> thank you, erielle. let's check the forecast now and get it back over to rob. hey, rob. >> good morning, again, guys. dry conditions and hot conditions out west, and we have several fires burning over
