Of thousands of spectators before crashing right in front of them. Hes down midfield, fire trucks are on him. What do you mean, he crashed . Affirmative. Oh, god and hero dog. The German Shepherd who leapt between a little girl and a rattlesnake. A rescue dog, for us, paid it forward by protecting my family. The snake sinking its teeth into the brave dog. How people across america are touched by this story and helping out. All right. Good morning. Also coming up on the show, a worrying headline from the world of sports. A fan hit by a piece of broken bat while sitting in the stands at bostons legendary fenway park. This fan was sitting behind protective netting but the shard of wood flew right over it. This is not the first time. Which begs the question is Major League Baseball doing enough to protect the fans . Were going to start with another popular past time gone badly awry. Its the kind of weekend outing millions of americans have enjoyed. This time, it turned fatal. Scores of people were on the way to a casino when their bus crashed. On a texas highway. Eight are dead. 40 injured. And so many people now asking, how did this happen . Abcs Lauren Lyster is in laredo, texas, with more. Lauren, good morning to you. Reporter the majority of more than 40 hurt passengers have been treated at this hospital. Taken after the crash. They thought they would end up at a casino yesterday. Thats where they were headed on a tour bus on what was a rainy morning. Then tragedy struck. Taking them on this devastating detour. This morning, eight passengers killed on this charter bus. More than 40 hospitalized. Busted windows. Dangling auto parts. A collapsed ceiling. Smashed seats are whats left of it after losing control on a texas highway, rolling over. The way i saw the bus, i had to know there were fatalities. Reporter it was just about 11 30 in the morning on saturday in a rural area of southern texas, 46 miles from laredo when the driver no longer had command and the vehicle flipped. Everything is very preliminary for us. As far as the contributing factors. All we do know is that he lost control of the bus. And rolled over. Reporter seven people died at the scene. One dying later at the hospital. 44 people were hurt. So many, they had to be taken to three different nearby hospitals. Objects become projectiles. People become projectiles. So theyre hitting hard metal at high speeds. Reporter every week end, buses like this one pack full and head to casinos around the country. This isnt the only accident. Last year, nine passengers were hurt when this tour bus in new york smashed into a building. And in february, this bus heading to a connecticut casino flipped in the snow on its way from new york, injuring dozens. And the federal government is now involved in this texas crash. A team from the ntsb is expected to arrive here today to investigate the wreck and look at if the weather played a role. Paula . Thats the big question, lauren. How did this happen . Thank you. We want to move to politics now. Its been a tough couple of days for donald trump, from refusing to release his tax returns to the socalled trump tapes. And now, Hillary Clinton is trying to take advantage in a new ad. Mary bruce is here with the story. Mary, good morning to you. Reporter good morning. Trump is making an extremely rare move here. Breaking precedent by refusing to release his tax returns. And now this morning, clinton is seizing on it. And turning up the heat. Thank you. Reporter this morning, Hillary Clinton is slamming donald trump for refusing to release his tax returns, asking in this new video, what is he hiding . If i decide to run for office, ill produce my tax returns. Absolutely. I cant do it until the audit is finished. Reporter but trump tells george, voters dont have a right to see a candidates tax returns. Yes, or no, do you believe voters have a right to see your tax returns before they make a final decision . I dont think they do. But i do say this. I will really gladly give them. Theyre not going to learn anything. But its under routine audit. Reporter until then, he says he wont reveal how much he pays in taxes. What is your tax rate . Its none of your business. Youll see it when i release. I fight very hard to pay as little tax as possible. The commercial is effective. He uses Donald Trumps own words. To sort of expose what could be hypocrisy. Reporter this, as trump is haunted by a voice from his past. Whats your name again . John miller. Reporter the person on the other end of the call tells us she knew before she hung up this was trump. No doubt, the real donald trump. No doubt. He apologized two weeks later and said im sorry in print. Reporter sue carswell was a reporter for People Magazine in 1991 when she conducted this interview with someone who claimed to be trumps spokesman. Shes somebody that has a lot of options. He gets called by everybody in the book, in terms of women. Reporter carswell says weeks later, trump called her and admitted it was him all along. Now, trump denies it. A part of me was like, is it donald . I think it is. It tells you about his character. Hes punking me. Hes punking the country. Reporter you think it shows hes a liar . Yes. It shows hes a liar. Reporter she says she did not leak this recording to the press. She suggests trump may have released it himself to divert attention from the other issues dogging his campaign, like those tax returns. Dan and paula . Interesting theory. Mary, thank you. Lets bring in jon karl, in washington, getting ready to host this week. Hey jon. So, Hillary Clinton, as we saw in marys piece, is hitting donald trump on his refusal to release his taxes . Is this a potent line of attack . Isnt it a bit dangerous given that some have called on her to release her speeches to wall street . I think, dan, the answer to both of your questions is yes. It is a potent line of attack. Trump will be dogged from now to the election from people saying, what do you have to hide . Hillary clinton making the case in the debates, you can imagine. The minute she does, what do you have to hide . The question goes right back to her. Not just the transcripts of her speeches to goldmansachs. And to others. Its also the emails that were deleted. Its everything else. The clintons have had issues with the issue of transparency. Trump has, too. Welcome to the fall campaign. The front page of the New York Times has an article called crossing the line, trumps private conduct with women. Polls say hes unpopular with women. Does he need to fix it . Could this article further the damage . Well, look, he does have a huge problem with women. Hillary clinton begins this race with a doubledigit huge gender gap lead. Among women. A lot of people will look at the story and say, they have heard many of these stories before. Theyll see how the New York Times placed that front and center and say, there they go again. The media is going after donald trump. Those predisposed to trump, theyve heard this before. Theyve heard worse. Im not sure it changes the dynamic much. He does need to find a way to change the gender gap. On a lighter note, saturday night live weighing in on reports that trump was his own publicist in the 1990s. Take a look. Mr. Trump is the reallife inspiration for ironman. Who am i . Im his publicist, joey pepperoni. No, im not donald trump in disguise. This is just what classy people sound like, okay . Joey pepperonis lines are ringing off the hook this morning. Trump denies he ever pretended to be joey pepperoni or anybody else. Do you think people buy that . Does it matter . Since all the trump controversies tend to blur together. Hes the ultimate teflon candidate, dan. I dont know. You know, this is something else. He hasnt always denied it by the way. There is that court filing from way back in the 1990s where he acknowledged using the name john baron on occasion. This is one of the stranger stories. I dont know where this one goes. The problem for trump is this could lead to ridicule. One thing he hates is to be ridiculed. Jon will be part of a big show this morning. Hell interview the head of the republican party. And Martha Raddatz will be live from iraq. Thats coming up later on this week right here on abc. Thanks, dan. A frightening moment at bostons fenway park. A man in the stands struck by a broken bat. The man see here right after it happened. Adrienne bankert joins us with the story. The fan, he was sitting behind new protective netting put in place after a couple of incidents last year. So how did this happen . Reporter you know, paula, the large end of that bat went over the net, which was a contingency for fans in the stands. The question, is major league doing enough to prevent injuries . Overnight, a fan bloodied at a Boston Red Sox game after a bat comes flying into the stands. It hit him right in the head. Straight on in the head. Reporter the still unidentified fan hit above the right eye by what was left after Houston Astros george springers atbat. Those at the park acting quickly on the assist. They waved down medical personnel. To come and look at the guy. They came down, had a big towel on his head. Kind of pressed against it. He was walking, there was two people were helping him up through the stands. Reporter according to the red sox, the mans injuries were not serious. Saturdays close call eerily reminiscent of the terrifying night last year. In the very same stadium. This is a broken bat grounder. Reporter last june at fenway park, tanya carpenter suffering lifethreatening injuries. After Brett Lawries bat splintered. Watch the bump, watch the bump here. Reporter portions of the wood becoming partially embedded in her shoulder and hitting her in the face. The 45yearold spent a week in the hospital and continued outpatient treatment. Carpenter, along with a string of other highprofile injuries led Major League Baseball to implement new safety guidelines. Recommending the protective netting between the field and the seats be extended 70 feet from the backstop to both dugouts. This morning, the man struck by the bat is recovering. He was treated at the stadium, transported to a local hospital, and released. And a spokesperson for tanya carpenter says she was saddened to hear another patron was hit by a bat at fenway, though grateful that the netting is extended to the dugouts. There are serious questions regarding the decision by the mlb and red sox to limit the protection to those within 70 feet of home play. The players in the dugouts are protected, but the fans above the dugout are not. Youre sitting behind the netting. You have a false sense of security. Be aware of everything at all times. Always watching. I think a lot of people looking at their cell phones has become a habit for all of us. So even at the ball game, keep your eyes peeled. Keep your eyes on the game.
