The city of lights under siege. This is an attack on all of humanity. President obama offering our support standing with the french as security is stepped up in cities all across america on alert at stadiums across the country. A special edition of Good Morning America starts now. Good morning to our viewers in the west and welcome to a special edition of Good Morning America. Im George Stephanopoulos here with paula faris and our hears and minds are with parris this morning. A city under siege and there you see the images of terry and carnage. Incomprehensible. Youre looking at the streets of parris this morning, all of france in a state of emergency right now. This is the second major terry attack there this year and yesterday the deadliest day in france wince world war ii. Isis released a statement. They are claiming responsibility this morning. The french president , francois hollande, called this an active war by a terrorist army saying that france will defeat isis and will triumph from this savagery. Savagery in six separate locations. You see them right there including the stadium where the explosions were heard, the bataclan theatre and four restaurants. 127 dead. That number could climb. Two more in the hospital. 70 in critical condition. Eight terrorists have been killed. Seven by suicide vests. We do have full Team Coverage this morning and abcs matt gutman is on the scene for us and starts us off. Good morning, matt. Reporter want to give you a sense for the chaos along this street. Right beyond those moving vans is that theater and after the police initially burst in and neutralized the assailants the first floor was so jammed they had to lower the dead and wounded to the street. Right underneath at a bar, a Triage Center was set up. Bleeding people came running out. Everywhere you look here today you see bloody articles of clothing. Terrified fans fleeinging the bataclan concert hall. Bystand e bystanders rushing to help carrying some by their arms and legs. A small venue in one of the most popular parts. Inside a reportedly sold out to see the american rock band eagles of death metal. The drummers brother saying the band was only six songs into their set when gunfire erupted. It was so loud it was louder than the band, and they all hit the stage floor, and as they got up to try to evacuate, they saw men with machine guns just shooting anything and everything. Reporter shortly before 00 p. M. , four heavily armed gunmen dressed in black opening fire shooting at random. I saw people starting to panic. People were running away. Reporter minutes later the assail apartments stormed the theater according to eyewitnesses firing their ak47s nonstop for a minute of 10 to 15 minutes stopping only to reload their weapons. Inside, others finding places to hide. Witnesses report hearing the gunmen shout allahu akbar. Police say more than 100 trapped as high point solutionss for three hours. Shortly after midnight armed officers storming the concert hall. Amid the incredible loss of life, rescuers helping 40 people to safety. The four attackers among the dead inside the theater. Three killed by their own suicide belts. Terrorists also targeting frances packed national stadium. Three explosions ringing out during a france germany soccer match. The crowd started moving. Everyone started panicking. It was impossible to leave. The trains were blocked. People everywhere. Its very stressful. Reporter like the other targets across the city, not a state building or popular tourist. Turn nothing horrific scenes. I realize she wasnt breathing. It was really awful. Really awful. Now, in a city known for its fairly lowkey Security Response this was crawling with actual military troops and, of course, the medical response to this disaster last night was unprecedented. Paula and george. Matt, thanks very much. Lets bring in our chief investigative correspondent brian ross. The french president says isis is responsible. They claim responsibility and now you found that passport . A very important clue. A syrian passport found on the body of one of the attackers. And, brian, right now they think theyve gotten all eight of the attackers. Thats what the French Police say but they have a huge search going on for possible accomplices. Absolutely. There certainly were accomplices in this case. Who provided this emwith the weapon, the vehicles and where did they meet to put together this very synchronized attack. One of the Big Questions this hell have to get at, was it inspired by isis and coordinated all incise france or outside direction. The french president alleges it was coordinated outside, planned outside and the attackers were sent in. They chose their sites because the game between france and germany represented their enemies and, two, the rock concert with the American Band was what they call a party of perversity. Thats why they chose that. This appears to be the third major attack by isis in just the last two weeks. Thats right. There was the bombing of the russian jet, the alleged bombing of the alleged russian jet, the bombs in beirut and now this, a wave of terry, isis has claimed responsibility for all three attacks. Okay, brian ross, thanks very much. Moments ago, i spoke with an eyewitness in that bataclan theatre. Ginny watson, thanks for joining us. You were on the first floor balcony inside that concert hall. Yeah, i was in the venue. What happened . It was crazy. I dont know what to say. I was there. We heard shots right we were in the middle of the concert, you know, the band was playing. It was great, there was a good atmosphere, we were having fun and all of a sudden we heard shots and like i mentioned before, i didnt believe it at first. I thought it was a joke. I thought, whats going on because i didnt see the shots. I just heard them, and having never been under attack in my life, i couldnt i didnt think it was actually real gunshots, and then all of a sudden people started screaming, and thats when we realized with my two friends that we had to get out, and we started ducking, you know, hiding behind the seats getting down and luckily near to where we were, there was a safety exit, and we managed to get into the staircase of that safety exit. We were there for about 30 seconds to a minute before opening the doors, because i think they were outside in the streets when we got out, and then the doors opened and somebody said its safe. We can get out and we all ran and it was, you know before you got out what could you see of what was happening . Yeah, well, thats the thing. Because they started downstairs, obviously because, you know, when they came in, i think they came in with they ran a car into the entrance, im not sure, i think i heard that. They started shooting downstairs so i didnt see i didnt see the people shooting. I didnt see the, you know, the kind of fire that the kalashnikovs gives off, i suppose. I dont know. All i heard, i just heard a shooting but it was like continuous shooting it was like bang, bang, bang. How long did it go on . It went on for awhile. They were just shooting. They just didnt stop. Obviously, you know, they just wanted to kill as many people as possible. It must have been so horrifying. It was yeah, its horrible. I was very chilled last night. I mean, i had loads of alcohol. Im a bit less chilled today. I feel i woke up this morning feeling, yeah, my you know, i felt i was yeah, i feel quite horrible. I dont know. Im trying to keep it all together. I think i wont stop so im trying to maintain a cool attitude, but i feel very distressed because i knew people there. Some of the people i knew, apparently somebody got shot, not people i know personally but people of people who know i mean, just various acquaintances. Its just sad that this would happen in a place where people come together to listen to good music. You know, its just its depressing. And whats it like in paris this morning . I dont know. I havent been out yet. Im going to go out later because i want to join my family in burgundy, so i should be getting a train hopefully. Well see, but i havent been out yet, so i dont know what the atmosphere is like in paris. I dont think its very rosy and happy. I think people are staying indoors. I imagine so. Ginny watson, thanks very much for your time. Thank you. So much horror to absorb right there. And theyre just faced with such a devastating reality today, george. And a terrifying night for the city of paris. This morning theyre waking up in shock, and people are watching all over the world. We spoke with several other survivors besides ginny who witnessed that carnage. We were walking, and we heard a handful of gunshots. We heard a bunch of gunshots, maybe eight to ten, and then there was kind of a pause, and there were a few more. And police crouched behind like the doorways and trees. I dont think anybody around really understood what was going on. You could hear the gunshots again and again, and we waited for the terrorists to reload again their weapons. We just turned around and ran for our lives. There was lines of ambulances and ambulances running by. Somebody saw a body lying in the street. I saw a couple of people wounded. I saw this one girl with a wound in her thigh. So, everybody at that point lying on the floor to escape the bullets. And we just stood there in silence. I pray for the victims and for the families. Most of them died meters away from me. Some of them on me. So i pray for them. Somber words there, and abcs terry moran is on the streets of parris this morning. Terry, the french government has tightened the borders and now theyre telling people to stay indoor, correct . Reporter that is true, paula, and, in fact, a word that comes to mind here in paris is a word you never associate with this city, subdued. Traffic is light. Many people have stayed inside, it seems. Those who are out are speaking in quiet tones and even it seems not running and hustling around. This is a city, as you have heard, in shock, and here on what on any given weekend is one of the brightest and liveliest of the streets of paris, there are pools of blood, dried blood on this street, and the memorials have already begun. In the middle of all this, parisians nevertheless have a sense this is a grim expectation that has been fulfilled. The attacks on Charlie Hebdo and elsewhere earlier this year set this city on edge waiting for the next blow to fall. It has in the most horrible fashion, and yet in the middle of all of it, they are pulling together. There was that Movement Last night online to open the doors, your own doors of your homes to people who needed to stay who couldnt get across town given the chaos here and even here on this street. A little bit earlier a man brought out a piano and started playing just to try to calm the nerves and the situation, bring a note of beauty and peace to this scene of carnage, george. Okay, terry, thanks very much. As you said, second major attack in the last ten month, want to bring in our chief Global Affairs correspondent martha raddatz, and we heard the french president , martha, this morning blame isis, declare war. Reporter he did. He said this was an act of war and when faced with war, the country must take appropriate decisions. It was a reminder to me, george, of president george bush saying we would have a global war on terry shortly after 9 11, so you have to wonder what the approach of the french will be. Will they approach this militarily or from a Law Enforcement angle . Right now the french have been conducting air strikes in syria, but, frankly, not very many of them. Will they do more . Will the u. S. Do more . The response is what we are truly watching today. The french president seemed to have reached a conclusion already that this was directed and prepared overseas. Reporter yeah, he made that statement too, as well, planned from outside with outside complicity, which an investigation will establish. So, who planned this . Are they in syria . Are they in iraq . We have al baghdadi in iraq, in mosul that city he has held for well over a year and you have fallujah there, as well, so there are definitely heads of isis but whether they were involved in this, we just dont know. We have eight individuals, sort of a pack of lone wolves perhaps or there was some sort of command and control. Someone from outside and the french clearly think that at this point, or i dont think the president would have said this, that its somehow outside is somehow coordinating and telling those men to do what they did. What we do know, martha, is that isis has been gaining strength, strongholds in syria, strongholds in iraq. You were recently in afghanistan. Isis gaining strength there, as well. Huge escalation across the region and beyond in afghanistan. The commander there told me isis has become a real problem there. Theyve seen them pop up around the country, whether theyre just inspired, whether they want to be part of that hideous team of isis and think theyre winners, thats a question theyre asking themselves, as well, but iraq, as well. I mean, i was over there in january of 2014, and the ambassador there then was so concerned about isis, and six months later they moved in, and they took the city of mosul and they still hold that today. Martha raddatz, thanks very much. Lets go to the white house, jon karl is there and, jon karl, we saw the president come out shortly after the attacks and say we would do whatever it takes to help our oldest ally. Reporter absolutely, and although the president wouldnt say who was responsible, even today the United States, the white house not ready to say that they believe it was isis but clearly believe it was a terrorist attack, and you heard from the president , a strong statement of solidarity with the french people. This is an attack, not just on parris, its an attack not just on the people of france, but this is an attack on all of humanity and the universal values that we share. Those who think that they can terrorize the people of france or the values that they stand for are wrong. And after that statement, jon, the president was able to speak with the french president hollande and now the president heading overseas to deal with this issue of isis. Reporter thats right. The first stop on that trip something go to be turkey where he is meeting at the g20 with other european leaders. President hollande was supposed to be there. That meeting will go on without president hollande, but the topic, the number one topic was how to deal with the battle against isis, and in the statement from the president and in what we are hearing from Administration Officials since that statement, you hear resolve to help the french, not just with the investigation and the aftermath of this attack, but clearly the implication here is that the United States will help in going after whoever was responsible for this attack. Okay, jon karl, thanks very much. And so many folks here at home on edge, security is being ramped up, especially at sports arenas and stadiums. Lots of College Football games will be played across the country today, and nfl stadiums will be filled, and dan is in times square with that part of the story for us this morning. Hi, dan. Reporter paula and george, good morning to both of you. Cities across the country are boosting security in the wake of that horror over in paris including this city, americas largest metropolis, a place that is no stranger to terry, new york city. Here in new york, the nypd deploying extra personnel and its counterterrorism unit. Critical Response Teams ready in the citys most visible targets. Not only will you see an increased uniformed presence with Police Officers with heavy weapons, theres also we work with our federal partners, the fbi and the joint Terrorism Task force. Reporter with one of the targets in paris being a packed stadium, sporting venues across america will be enhancing security today. In los angeles, the famous rose bowl increasing its staffing and asking fans to leave their bags at home. The nba and nhl putting its teams on high alert, but the nfl saying it actually wont be changing protocols as sundays games approach. The League Spokesman saying, security at our games is always at a heightened state of alert adding all nfl stadiums are already equipped with metal detectors. You cant view it as a nuisance. This is the world we live in now and if you have to take precautions, if you have to go through screening, thats just part of the process. Reporter with the attackers in paris hitting so many socalled soft targets like a restaurant and concert hall, the nypd and fbi will be working to keep popular areas around this city safe. You can expect heightened security at Tourist Attractions and on public transit. The tragic events in paris we established a counterterrorism overlay. What that is, its heavy weapons Emergency Service officers. They go to highprofile and sensitive locations throughout the city. Reporter it is important to note, very important to note that the department of Homeland Security is urging americans not to panic issuing a statement in which they say, we know of no specific or Credible Threats of an attack on the u. S. Homeland of the type that occurred in paris. Paula, over to you. Very important note, dan, thank you. And authorities in the u. S. Are closely monitoring the situation in paris. Abcs senior justice correspondent Pierre Thomas is in washington. And, pierre, here in the u. S. , weve been just as active in tracking down potential terror attacks, havent we . Reporter yes, paula, the fbi has dozens of investigations under way in all 50 states. Many surrounding suspected isis sympathizers and they found a specific pool isis has reached through social media. In the last year alone more than 70 americans have been arrested for somehow trying to support isis, some accused of trying to join isis, others arrested for plotting attacks here at home. Most are young. Most are men, but there have been some women, and even teenagers have been arrested too, paula. In terms of differentiating style, is there a difference between antiterry attacks in france and europe compared to what were used to here at home . Reporter the fbi employs many of the same tactic as and has been extremely aggressive in monitoring radical web
