julia louis-dreyfus is an alum and a mom of one of their players. watching her son over the week. she's a super fan. >> she's a super fan and once they made the tournament the proud mama posted that video saying we're going to the dance, boys. >> never get tired of seeing that. >> also all eyes are on that massive storm. take a live look at wrigley field in chicago. the snow starting to come down right now, the roads messy there this morning. they're bracing for up to half a foot of snow today and another 6 inches tomorrow. >> it is all heading east. we have team coverage across the midwest and northeast. ginger zee starts us off right here in times square. good morning, ginger. >> good morning, george. it's two storms that will come together in the northeast. that storm in chicago is why you see winter weather alerts. the advisories and even lake-effect snow alert. as it moves east the blizzard warning coastal new jersey, long island, new york city involved, coastal connecticut for wind plus heavy snow. so there are a couple of things happening that developing low on the coast, the low that's going on right now in the midwest as those two combine and come together, i'll tell you about snowfall totals in just moments but first we have to check it in chicago. our alex perez is right there this morning where the snow is flying. >> reporter: good morning. the snow started falling overnight. as you can see it's already accumulating very quickly. believe it or not, chicago has not had any significant snowfall since december. so it's going to be a rough day. highway havoc in the midwest. a late winter storm slamming millions from iowa to minnesota. >> awful. didn't expect it to get this bad. it is intense. so crazy. >> reporter: plummeting temperatures, freezing freeways sending cars sliding off the road into each other. the treacherous conditions causing this 24-car pileup outside of minneapolis. wind and waves from lake ontario along with freezing temperatures engulfed this new york house in ice. surprisingly this isn't out of the ordinary. delays in the twin cities as airlines scramble to de-ice planes stuck on the tarmac. the blast blowing across the region overnight dumping close to ten inches of snow from the dakotas to iowa. another 24 inches expected in some areas by wednesday. but merciless is subfreezing temperatures disastrous near detroit. 65,000 people in the area still without power. and officials now say carbon monoxide poisoning from generators left two dead in this morning across the northeast 60 million residents are bracing for the winter wallop as it barrels their way. and this is the beginning for chicago. the storm is readed east. but round two lake-effect snow right here tomorrow. robin. >> all right. take it easy there. coming down there, alex. thank you. that storm is gathering steam and millions bracing for what could be the biggest snowfall of the season up to two feet possible. let's go to rob in philadelphia. good morning, rob. >> hey, good morning, robin. i am standing on top of 17,000 tons of salt, part of 50,000 tons available to philadelphia. by the way, new york city has nearly 300 tons of salt ready to go because it's been a mild winter, they have plenty of leftovers and will need it with this storm that will come in during the overnight hours on a weekday, heaviest during the morning rush and we had a they'll be working in 12 hour shifts at least through wednesday converting hundreds of sanitation trucks into plow and salt trucks throughout the day. i talked to a penndot official who said they haven't seen action this winter so they are champing at the bit and ready to go if this storm ramps up the way we think it will. robin. >> all right, rob, thank you very much. aren't you glad you came back for all this? >> i'm as enthusiastic as those ready to shovel the snow. the weather is already causing travel headaches for millions of people out there and airlines have already canceled hundreds of flights and more delays and cancellations on the way and david kerley is at reagan national airport with more. good morning to you, david. >> reporter: good morning, michael. the cancellations tell you the story of this storm. already hundreds of flights cancelled. if you live on the west coast, it's going to affect you too, the ripple effect. here's the story. more flights cancelled tomorrow than today. 800 already today and 1100 action flights cancelled tomorrow. that number is going to multiply as well. airlines trying to prepare as best they can. a lot will be traveling on the roads. the big concern there, look at chicago where the snow is already falling. the number of inches that will come to the east coast. crews spent the weekend trying to make sure the roads are prepared as that storm starts to move in. it is going to be a mess along the east coast both flying and driving. the trains as well michael. >> all right, david, thank you. stay safe out there and, ginger, we have an idea of what's coming but when and where. >> there we go. this is the timing. the part everybody needs to pay close attention to because of the start time. remember, it's the two storms coming together. we showed you the chicago this morning. but that coastal storm, when that wraps up tonight, that's when washington, d.c. starts to get into it. i-95 corridor overnight so philadelphia to new york city between midnight and 3:00 a.m., then the heaviest snow, rob mentioned it, at 8:30 in the morning. the closer you are to that rain/snow line the more you could get, you could see 1 to 3-inch snow totals per hour along some of these lines. that's how it will add up quickly. next question, when does it leave? tomorrow night by 11:00 p.m. and even clear of boston still in vermont, new hampshire and maine and here's what everybody wants to see, snow totals. we took the liberty of taking all the computer models and seeing what we thought, new york city in the 10 to 15. 15 plus in that darker magenta area. washington, d.c. looks like it's right on the cusp of like that 2 to 4 up to 6. michael. >> i'll tell you what, george and i gave a look of abdominal pain when you said -- >> my flight tomorrow night for the winter games for special olympics is not going to happen. >> that doesn't look good. no. >> hopefully on wednesday, all right, ginger, thank you. turning now to president trump facing new pressure to reveal evidence for those wiretapping allegations. also facing new questions about why he chose to oust a high-profile u.s. attorney. our senior white house correspondent cecilia vega has much more on all that. good morning, cecilia. >> reporter: robin, good morning to you. the president is facing a number of showdowns this week. first up wiretapping. it has been nine days since he made that claim that president obama wiretapped him and now the calls for him to prove it are growing louder by the day. the white house has yet to offer any evidence to back up that bombshell accusation of wiretapping. top lawmakers on the house intelligence committee have given the justice department until today to do just that. so far, many seem skeptical. from the top democrat on the panel. >> there are one of two possibilities, the president quite deliberately for some reason made it up or more disturbing the president really believes this. >> reporter: to a republican on the senate intelligence committee. >> george, i have not seen that evidence. >> reporter: senator john mccain calling on the president to prove it. >> i have no reason to believe that the charge is true but i also believe that the president of the united states could clear this up in a minute. >> reporter: but the white house not backing down. counselor to the president kellyanne conway on sunday suggesting surveillance may have been even broader than wiretapping. >> what i can say is there are many ways to surveil each other now unfortunately. >> do you believe -- >> there was an article that talked about how you can surveil someone through their phones, through their -- certainly through their television sets, any number of different ways and microwaves that turn into cameras, et cetera, so we know that that is just a fact of modern life. >> reporter: that is far from the only controversy facing president trump this morning. this weekend an abrupt changing of the guard at the justice department. the attorney general requesting resignation letters from 46 federal prosecutors, all holdovers from the obama administration. but one of the most prominent, new york's preet bharara refused tweeting over the weekend, i didn't resign. moments ago i was fired. a sharp shift from november when then president-elect trump personally asked him to stay on the job. >> we had a good meeting. i said i would absolutely consider staying on. >> reporter: the white house calls it a routine housecleaning in a new administration. and another looming showdown, this one on health care. the congressional budget office as early as today could release findings that show millions of people who now have health care under obamacare could lose it but, george, before these findings are even out the white house is already pushing back. >> thanks, cecilia. joined by white house counselor kellyanne conway. welcome back to "gma." pretty explosive with the bergen record. any evidence at all that the cia techniques revealed by wikileaks were used against trump tower? >> the president is just happy that the investigation now includes this aspect that the house select intelligence committees and the house and senate are going to have this as part of their very attenuated russia campaign connection. all i said is i was making comments about the articles from this past week where it is revealed that one can be surveilled in any number of techniques through microwave, cameras, televisions. i wasn't talking about anything specific. >> do you know whether the trump tower was wiretapped and you answered by citing this report about the cia techniques revealed by wikileaks. why would you make a suggestion like that without any evidence. >> i wasn't making a suggestion about trump tower. those are two separate things. >> that's what you were asked. >> about i answered him about surveilling generally. >> but you have no evidence that that kind of surveillance was used against trump tower. >> i have no evidence but that's why there is an investigation in congress. that's particularly what investigations are for and i would note director comey asked the department of justice to make a comment. he hasn't made a comment and i noticed yesterday congressman schiff said he would ask comey about that. when he has him before the committee leader in the month. >> just to be clear you're saying you have no evidence for these allegations? >> i have no evidence for these and that answer has nothing to do with what the president said last week. >> let's move on to health care. the president is promising insurance to everyone. we're awaiting the cbo report and i know the white house has questions about it. you said back in january right here on "gma" that those who are relying on coverage will not lose it. that promise stands? >> yes, it does, in fact, there are 20 million people just last year who decided they didn't want to access obamacare, in fact, 6.5 million of them paid a penalty and that ends under obamacare -- under the repeal and replace. people no longer pay the penalty, the taxes, the mandates. you had other people asking for an undue hardship waiver which i assume they were granted. many americans who were promised they could keep their plan and doctor were told a big lie and premiums are spiraling out of control. five states and 1,021 counties in this country where you can only access one insurance provider. that's not a choice. and so -- and it's actually in a downward spiral. unsustainable and unaffordable. i think the people who receive health care through medicaid, people who receive it through employers which is many people in this country, they'll continue to have it as they're used to it now but trying to equalize the tax treatment for the farmers and small business owners and mechanics who cannot pool together to access health insurance. >> you mentioned medicaid. there will be pretty big cutbacks, over $370 billion in cutbacks under the president's bill in the next ten years. >> you'll receive tax credits if you're on medicaid now. this will be slow-rolled. it will take a couple years as you know. if your on medicaid right now you can expect to continue to receive your health insurance through medicaid and you'll get tax credits that allow you to buy insurance that may be more customary for you. i don't think certain people are looking for maternity care of a certain age or gender, for example, so with more competition and more choices in the market which we currently just lack, you will have an opportunity to buy care that fits you. >> i was talking to republican senator tom cotton of arkansas yesterday on "this week." he's lobbying against this bill right now warning house members not to walk the plank saying they'll lose the house if they vote for this bill. what do you say to senator cotton? >> i'm not looking at a political calculation whatsoever. i'm not thinking about the next election but the millions who don't have care and coverage and want to and need it and were expecting it through obamacare. the other thing i would note senator cotton also said that there's major carpentry work to be done so he was hopeful that something can pass and the president this entire last week, george, has been inviting people into the white house, working the phone, doing what leaders do, listening, negotiating, being a decision maker, being a deal maker and he is taking all those inputs. if people have ideas how to improve the bill he is listening to that, he and the vice president are doing that i noted the democratic party comes up with no ideas. it's resist, obstruct, they're not even coming up with anything that might be workable to try to improve this bill. >> they said they're willing to fix obamacare if it's not repealed. >> at least they're admitting that it needs a major fix. how do you plug all the holes and patchwork something that's not worked for many americans. certainly there are people on the exchange that are happy and can continue doing that. the president and the five principals he laid out, make sure there is a smooth transition for those already on the exchanges but you're talking about millions and millions of others, some of them have an insurance card and literally can't use it. that's the worst of all possible outcomes you're told we checked the box with you, you have health insurance coverage but you don't have care because you can't afford the premiums and you can't afford the deductible. >> kellyanne conway, thanks very much. >> thanks. >> the white house on that preet bharara firing offering no explanation for the president's change of heart from november to today saying this was routine resignation of all u.s. attorneys. >> nothing more than that. all right. now to a frightening moment at the white house. a man accused of jumping a fence armed with pepper spray is due to appear in court this afternoon. the president praising the secret service but the incident is raising security questions. abc's mary bruce is there at the white house. has more for us. good morning, mary. >> reporter: good morning, robin. the intruder wanted to meet the president but instead he's being held in federal dustky without bail. it was just after midnight here on friday when 26-year-old jonathan tran jumped the white house fence and approached the south portico door, not far from the first family's residence where the president was home at the time. when he was discovered, tran told officers he was a friend of the president's and he had an appointment. they discovered he was carrying a book by the president, a letter mentioning russian hackers and two cans of mace. tran is now charged with illegal entry while carrying a dangerous weapon. he is expected to have his hearing later today. he could expect up to ten years in prison. robin. >> mary, we've been seeing a series of these fence jumpers in recent years so what is being done to prevent this. >> reporter: there is a redesign here in the works. the plan in part is to raise the white house perimeter fence from its current eight feet up to 13 feet hoping they can once and for all put an end to fence jumpers. >> all right, mary, thank you. >> you know, ginger is standing by with more on the blizzard but first let's take a look at an amazing rescue in a warmer spot of the world. take a look at this video. shot from the deck of a massive cruise ship, incredibly close call with a carnival cruise ship in port canaveral. canaveral/carnival, get it. nearly hit two jet skiers. they flipped over, they fell into the water but luckily for them patrolling the harbor they got to them and pulled them aboard. you can hear the people yelling get out. get into the boat. and they barely got out of the way. take a look again, the two skiers being saved turned upside down underwater until their rescuer pulled them from the water. got that boat out just in time and they called him their hero. >> absolutely. >> absolute hero. >> let's go back to ginger. how about those high winds that we're dealing with? >> they are ramping up for sure, ginger, the sun coming up but you can see my breath is still bitterly cold so temperatures not going to be an issue and the road temperatures certainly are cold enough for this to stick. i want to show you what's going on in chicago. that's the first hit of this storm. the 3 to 6 inches expected there. the roads okay for now but pittsburgh, detroit, you are next and then philadelphia as we mentioned has 17,000 tons of this right now. 50,000 tons at the ready. this helps melt the snow, lower the freezing temperature of that snow but if we're talking a foot or more this is going to be a hard press. this is going to get very active today. the sanitation trucks once they get done with their routes will convert to salt and plow trucks and spread it across the roads and pretreated yesterday and do it again today but with the snowfall rates we're about to see it'll be a hopeful effort. clearing the roads i think once the storm is done more than trying to keep them clear while it's happening. you hear them backing up getting ready to go. margarita, anyone? a lot of folks may be able to use it in a couple of days. guys back to you. >> thanks for being there for us. to be as prepared as possible. that unrest in ferguson, missouri, it's over a newly uncovered surveillance video that shows michael brown hours before he was fatally shot by a police officer. some say it raised questions about whether he really robbed the convenience store on a later visit and abc's steve osunsami has the story. good morning, steve. >> reporter: good morning to you, george. the big question, of course, is why is this video just coming out this morning after all these years and there's no good answer for that. this new video may cast a different light this morning on the events that led to the police shooting death that started a movement. and overnight it had people protesting again with reports of shots fired. >> shots fired! >> reporter: when michael brown was killed on the streets of ferguson, missouri, in 2014, this was the video police shared just days after the shooting. the shooting victim is seen with his hands around a shopkeeper's neck as he makes off with a carton of cigarillos. >> it's going to be a black male in a white t-shirt. he's running toward quick trip. >> reporter: police called what happened a strong-armed robbery and argued brown brought the same level of violence to his confrontation minutes later with the ferguson police officer who killed him. >> how can he shoot with his hands in the air? >> reporter: this new video from the same store suggests that brown had left the cigarillos at the corner store the night before and that people working there had exchanged the tobacco for drugs. something that appears to be happening here. the filmmaker who discovered the video says it was recorded at 1:13 a.m. august 9th, nearly 11 hours before brown returned to the store. >> we're doing this for mike. we're not just doing it to uncover for ferguson. >> reporter: part of a documentary called "stranger fruit" that debuted this weekend. at a texas film festival. it suggests that brown's argument the next morning was over getting back his things. >> they wanted us to think michael robbed the store because they needed us to think michael was aggressive with darren, the clerk, takes the cigarillos and puts it into a plastic bag and hands the plastic bag over the counter to michael brown. that's not stealing the store. >> reporter: brown's uncle said police lied about his nephew. >> the picture they painted of my nephew was not right. that video dispels one of the lies they was telling. >> reporter: the store owner strongly deny this telling abc news to turn around and somehow blame folks that have nothing to do with this is shameful adding it just didn't happen. this morning, st. louis county police tell us they can't confirm the authenticity of the video at this time. legally this changes nothing. police say officer darren wilson knew about the alleged robbery at the store but had no way of knowing brown was a suspect. whether or not there was a misunderstanding at the store has little to do with the later argument between brown and officer wilson. still no video of that argument or the shooting that followed. this just makes things messier. a civil trial is expected to start next year. george. >> okay, steve osunsami, thanks. let's talk more about it with dan abrams. also, former dallas police chief david brown, an abc news contributor. chief brown, let me begin with you and put the question right at the top why did it take so long to get out? should the video have been released sooner? >> yes, george, it should have been released sooner. this is not the way you communicate with your citizens in your community. it just lends itself to whether or not the department is holding back other types of evidence that maybe have a different narrative than we have seen for two and a half years. >> that's the question raised, dan abrams, but, remember, the officer who killed michael brown cleared by a county grand jury. by civil rights investigators. would this video have changed that? >> no, this is a compelling theory but let's remember, it wasn't just that a grand jury decided not to indict. it's that the department of justice did a thorough investigation and released an 86-page report based on the blood evidence and dna evidence and the eyewitnesses, based on the injury, all of that together they concluded supported darren wilson's account of what happened. it's also important to remember that many of the same supporters of michael brown initially said, well, what's the relevance of the first video? meaning showing michael brown pushing the clerk and you know what they were right and i think that they would be right here which is -- >> the officer didn't even know he was a suspect. >> so what happened there while interesting and important in terms of sort of the big picture of what happened that evening isn't really relevant to what happened between darren wilson and michael brown. >> do you agree with that, chief brown? >> yes, but i think that one thing that we're missing, transparency has everything to do with trust. people trusting that you do a thorough investigation lends itself to revealing everything you know about michael brown, about darren wilson so that the public can make their own assessment with all of the information rather than holding back some and not having explanation of why you didn't release it. >> a fair point. does this impact the civil trial at all? >> potentially could impact the civil trial because the question would be why did you release it and what chief brown is saying, it's trust. if the jurors in the civil case don't trust the police, that's not helpful to their case but, again, it won't go to the fundamental question, the police's answer to this is they didn't think it was relevant to the investigation but i think chief brown's absolutely right that when you're talking about trust, try and release as much as possible so no questions later. >> dan abrams, chief brown, thanks very much. coming up in just two minutes, criss angel speaking out about his brush with death just months after that other close call on stage. it's an abc news exclusive. sive. ws exclusive. whattwo servings of veggies? a new rule sparking a debate allowing first year residents to work 24-hour shifts in hospitals starting july 1st. and on the surface as a patient we're like, oh, this is -- no, but, doctors actually believe that this is something -- a good thing, why. >> sure. accreditation council that's in charge of making this decision realized that through evidence based research that prior to this patients were actually getting worse treatment in the hospital during the 16-hour shifts. the reason for that is you have an extra eight-hour shift that needs to be covered by another physician. whenever you have that handoff of care to another doctor that's where the mistakes happen. when you have more handoffs you have more mistakes. it's not actually the hours that count. >> wow. never thought of it like that. >> i'm tired after an eight-hour day. you know what i'm saying. dr. mike, you're a third year medical resident, in summit, new jersey. you've been through this. you've worked 24-hour shifts so how do you feel about this decision to actually make it possibly longer. >> absolutely. well, the layperson may not know this but actually a 24-hour shift is more favorable to residents themselves. why is that? when you work a 16-hour shift that's usually from 6:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. you work a couple extra hours to finish up now going into midnight. you still have to be back at 6:00 a.m. the next morning. not so great. you work a 24-hour shift the next day you have off to relax, catch up on sleep, catch up on work and that is crucial. >> any downside. >> sure, absolutely. i mean sleep deprivation is key here. you want doctors to be safe. that's why the impetus has been put on hospitals themselves to keep doctors and patients safe. if anyone notices one of the doctors to be sleep deprived making wrong decisions time to act and if they notice when they're driving home that there's an issue, doctors can call the hospital and get a car to take them home to make sure there's no accidents. really that's what's key. >> do we need i.d. from him to make sure he's legit. are you sure? how nerve-racking is it? >> you don't get much sleep and i imagine nick hasn't gotten sleep for about three years. >> it's definitely an emotional roller coaster and all coming to a head at like that moment and there's a lot of emotions going on so i'm excited to see how nick handles it and who he chooses. >> well, he was called nervous nick by nick watt in that piece. what if he doesn't find love. what do you recommend for his love life going forward? [ cheers and applause ] morning in new york city. i saw this sign. i've been up all night from -- they're excited. and they're overtired but i got something for you. come on out, guys. the vamps are coming up on "gma" and we'll take these girls up because we love them. we love everybody. thank you, guys. ready to perform? the vamps and matoma mopes away and we'll all go up together so you can see the performance. cool. good morning. if you were stuck inside all weekend, no worries. the spring warmth is going to be out there for you today. 60s at the coast, mid to upper 70s for the rest of us. this weather brought to you by microsoft. let's go. let's go. everybody in. everybody in. robin, we're coming up. >> come on up. bring them all in. we are here now with best-selling author and one of our favorite guests, danielle steel. she's written 160 books. 160 and counting. can't wait to read her latest called "dangerous games" and it is out now and it is great to have you back with us as always, my friend. >> i am so thrilled to be here. robin is my favorite person in the world. >> when i was going through my health crisis she sent me books that weren't even out yet. usually it's six books. last time we saw you said you put out six books a year. that's increased to seven. >> seven. >> how do you do that? >> i don't know. i work all the time. seven is interesting. it's sort of like jumping through flaming hoops but it's exciting. >> how do you keep the characters all straight? sometimes do you forget and put a character in the wrong book? >> only if i'm very, very tired. it's only happened a couple of types and suddenly there they are in the wrong book. it's like, oh, get them off "titanic." >> i hear this one is a little different. it's like a political and international intrigue. >> i try and keep them all different and this one is a political thriller about corrupt politicians and international oil deals and there's murder and also some excitement in it and it was very fun to write and there are always surprises in the book and i ended up calling my editor in the middle of the night when somebody kills somebody else and said you're never going to believe it. he just killed him. so, it surprised even me but it was a fun book and it's very different. >> well, they're always a page turner and you have devoted super fans. we have a couple here that would -- sofia would like to ask a question. what's your question? >> other than your own what are some of your favorite books that you have read? >> i don't get enough time to read other people's books. unfortunately. [ applause ] it's true. i enjoy, you know, sort of very popular fiction and things that i can just relax with and i read a lot of religious stuff which i enjoy. i love joel osteen. >> i love joel too. >> he's fun. very uplifting. >> and sometimes french novelists and stuff but most of the time i have to read me. >> that's not a problem at all and, gray, you have a question as well. >> yes, my question is, does your book "perfect life" my favorite one or any of our other books come from personal experiences? >> no, they sometimes come from something i've seen or not necessarily a personal experience, but i was intrigued in that book by the idea of sometimes famous lives look so perfect to the outside world and i mean you've seen that too and everybody thinks, oh, wow, but they don't realize the tragedies or the struggles that you have behind them so i like the idea of a woman with a big career who is you know struggling to keep the career and who has personal challenge with a daughter who is sight impaired so it wasn't personal but it's things i care about. >> got you. but something that was very personal around christmastime, you started choking and your daughter saved your life. >> very personal. and actually it was an interesting experience and it never happened to me before and i had a cold which i have again. but and i threw a vitamin c and went running off to do stuff and it got stuck but totally stuck, no air and it was the most panicky feeling and they say that mostly people run off and hide but instead i ran into the hallway where all my kids were home for christmas and pointed to my throat but there was absolutely no air going through. and all of them started -- there are grown-ups about 12 or 14 people and started to scream and say, oh, my god, she's choking. what do we do and nobody knew and the heimlich is a really important thing to know for a stranger or family member. and one of my daughters not knowing what else to do picked me up and banged me on the floor, i mean literally she's taller than i am and i was going no, no, no. but it worked. i mean she bonked me on the floor and it popped out. it really scared me to death. now i put up choking signs for restaurants in our kitchen in both our homes, do you know how to do the heimlich? but it really -- it was a good lesson for all of us that nobody knew what to do but it worked. >> we're glad that it did. >> i am too. >> i'm sure that you are. >> it really scared me. now every time i take a vitamin i walk into someone's room and say, i am taking a vitamin. so if i keel over they know why. >> well, danielle, never enough time. thank you so much. >> i love seeing you.
