they are preparing to say good-bye to the white house. first lady michelle obama shared this photo last night, with the message being your first lady has been the honor of a lifetime from the bottom of my heart, thank you. >> that's a beautiful shot, as well, the president did his final press conference yesterday. quiet day in the white house today, just lunch with the vice president. >> much more on the inauguration. we'll have much more on that in a moment. first the breaking news, an avalanche burying a mountain hotel in italy. the search for survivors is on and lama hasan has all the latest details from london. lama. >> reporter: good morning to you, robin. yeah, a harrowing rescue effort under way after four powerful earthquakes hit central italy on wednesday unleashing an avalanche. rescuers reporting they received a text overnight saying, quote, help, help, we are dying of cold and this morning those rescuers desperately searching for survivors saying they're calling out but no one is answering. this morning, the first images of the destructive avalanche, the sheer force of it pushing snow through the windows of the four-star rigopiano hotel shattering glass and blocking rooms, stopping rescuers from going in. this man, one of at least two survivors saved this morning. authorities saying at least 30 people are still missing with reports of several dead. they reached the place and saved two people, the chief of italian civil protection says, now they're working to bring other means of transportation. they're checking the conditions that are prohibitive, even for technical rescue. alpine rescue teams rushing to the scene reaching the hotel by helicopter and on foot. after initially being blocked by fallen trees and heavy snow overnight. the popular ski resort located about 30 miles from the coastal city of pescara, a strong earthquake hit there including one with a 5.7 magnitude. many fear still trapped under all that snow it's a race against time to reach them. teams with vital rescue equipment are at this hour still trying to reach the scene. robin. >> all right, lama, thank you. of course, we'll stay on top of the story. we'll get the latest on the trump inauguration. just one day away and the president-elect spent last night at several celebrations in the capital before stopping off at his own hotel for dinner. there he is. he'll be headlining a concert later on today. abc's cecilia vega in washington with all the details. good morning, cecilia. >> reporter: good morning to you. you're right. just one day to go. donald trump has been flying in here from washington to new york to attend the parties. but as of tonight he is in washington for good. >> president-elect donald trump landing in his soon-to-be home waving and hitting the inaugural party circuit crossing town in a motorcade attending exclusive black-tie dinners including one for his vice president mike pence and topping it all off with a stop at trump's washington hotel, just a few blocks away from his future home, the white house. inside, trump was showered with applause. now, trump preparing for his biggest audience yet, tweeting this photo of himself at what he calls his winter white house mar-a-lago, writing his speech on his desk next to him, a bronze eagle. that speech about 20 minutes long. trump has been studying past inaugural addresses and practicing daily. the themes, uniting the country and america first. aides calling it very personal. >> the first line is thanking everybody, all of the presidents and including, by the way, president obama and michelle who have been absolutely nice. >> ivanka trump also ready for the big day tweeting out the official invitation saying, the amazing journey is just getting started. she and the whole trump family are expected to spend trump's first night as president at the white house. >> barron and melania and all of my children will be in the white house, which is sort of a tradition. >> reporter: but who will not be participating in the festivities? more than 60 house democrats, never before in history have so many skipped a swearing in. >> i'm not asking for his birth certificate. but he has to build the legitimacy. >> reporter: hillary clinton's going. if she can go, why can't you? >> she was the first lady and she's going as the wife of bill clinton. >> reporter: she's the woman who ran against him and lost. >> it's going to be hard for her. >> reporter: and donald trump is expected to use the lincoln bible during his swearing in and only two other presidents have used that bible, president obama and abraham lincoln himself. tonight that big concert where trump will be speaking on the memorial. george. >> and, cecilia, then he hopes to hit the ground running right after he takes the oath. >> reporter: yeah, this has been a promise of donald trump's. many to reverse policies that president obama put into place. we are being told on friday immediately after taking office he will issue four to five executive orders, most are expected to be logistical things like security for the first family. george. >> that is a tradition. cecilia, thanks very much. over to capitol hill where trump cabinet neuman nominees facing another day of hearings and rick perry up for energy secretary in the hot seat and our congressional correspondent mary bruce tracking it all from the capitol. good morning, mary. >> reporter: good morning. yeah, the whirlwind of hearings continues with a familiar face, former texas governor rick perry will be making his case to lead the agency he once wanted to eliminate and once famously forgot. that's a move according to his prepared remarks he's expected to say he regrets. also this morning, democrats are expected to take aim at treasury secretary nominee steve mnuchin. the billionaire hedge fund manager and the goldman sachs executive under fire for his role in the housing crisis. he's been accused of rushing to foreclose on homeowners. george. >> there were some delays with some nominees getting their papers in and democrats slowing the process down a bit, as well so there won't be many cabinet secretaries in place tomorrow after the oath. >> reporter: no votes have been scheduled just yet but the senate majority leader suggests democrats will only allow three picks to go through on that first day. general mattis for defense, congressman pompeo for cia director and general kelly for dhs three picks critical to national security and also three of donald trump's less controversial nominees, but it is far fewer than what president obama got through in 2007 and seven of his nominees were approved on the first day and 13 in the first week. >> we bring in cokie roberts for more on the inauguration and how president-elect trump is preparing for this historic event. always good to see you, cokie. >> wonderful, robin. >> he will keep it short, he said, the speech. that's probably a good thing, you say. >> a good thing to do. a long speech, nobody wants to listen to. it gets very cold and, you know, the truth is i was thinking back of all the inaugurations that i've either been to or written about and i can only remember four speeches and two were lincoln, i was not there. but kennedy, ask not what your country and franklin roosevelt, you have nothing to fear but fear itself, so other than that, they're not exactly memorable. >> well, what are you exactly expecting from donald trump? his tone and his word, what are you expecting? >> i expect him to try to be unifying. to put people to, you know, who are concerned to try to put their fears to rest. yeah, election night we heard him give a speech that was along those lines. i think it will be the same thing but probably better. >> and he -- he tweeted out a picture of himself saying over the holidays that he was actually -- >> working on the speech. they always do that, don't they. we always see somebody -- and the speech writers say, actually i did it. so there's always a little tension. >> they work together. >> they do work together. >> make sure it's in his voice. >> in his voice and i do think one other thing he might do, you know, throughout the campaign we kept talking about if he's elected he'd be the first person who's never served in public office or the military. i think he might want to use that to his advantage rather than disadvantage and talk about coming to washington fresh, owing no one anything, just you, the people. >> he is going to be there, his predecessors will be there. >> none of whom voted for him. >> quite a moment when you -- this moment in our history. >> it's a huge moment and the fact that they didn't vote for him and are going to be there is very significant because they're saying, we are validating this. this is -- this is what we do in america. >> right. >> we have a peaceful transfer of government. in the rest of the world still you have situations where people are not willing to give over power. it's happening right now. but this is -- this is a remarkable moment and it has been since 1800, a woman reporter in 1800, 1801 wrote, this in our country where other places it's cause of bloodshed, here we have no dislocation. now, that wasn't entirely true but it was close enough. >> but it is a moment. it is a moment for our country. >> right. >> we'll have you back, talk a little more about some things later. right now to michael. >> all right, thank you, robin. now, let's get to the latest on former president george h.w. bush and his wife barbara's health. both are in a houston area hospital this morning and our chief white house correspondent jon karl has more and, jon, what do we know about their condition? >> reporter: the bushes remain in the hospital. we believe this is the first time that both mr. and mrs. bush have been hospitalized at the same time in all of their 72 years of marriage. the former president was admitted on saturday for shortness of breath. they had hoped he would be discharged by today but yesterday he took a turn for the worse and had to be admitted into the intensive care unit and his spokesperson says president bush was admitted to the icu to address an acute respiratory problem stemming from pneumonia and sedated yesterday so they could perform a procedure to clear his airway. as for mrs. bush, she was admitted yesterday for what we are told is bron kai 'tis. former president bush wrote a letter to donald trump. mr. trump told me he got it earlier this week telling them they would be unable to attend the inauguration. it reads, my doctor says if i sit outside in january, it likely will put me six feet under. same for barbara. so i guess we're stuck in texas but we will be with you and the country in spirit. he even offered to give the president-elect any help he could as he begins this incredible journey. mr. trump responded on twitter with a tweet, looking forward to a speedy recovery for george and barbara bush both hospitalized, thank you for your wonderful letter. mr. trump told me he was quite touched by the letter. >> and so they're not going to make the inauguration but their son and former president george w. bush was scheduled to attend the inauguration tomorrow. is this going to change his plans? >> well, we're told that as of >> we're told journal w bush and former first lady laura bush still intend to be here tomorrow for the inauguration. >> all right. thank you, jon. >> of course, we'll have full coverage of the inauguration. i'll be anchoring nonstop live coverage at 7:00 a.m. on "gma" and continues throughout the parade and tonight an inside look at america's new first family as the trumps head to washington on a special edition of "20/20" at 10:00 eastern. we'll have a little preview coming up. amy has the morning's other top stories. a serious building collapse in iran. dramatic new images out as a high-rise building in tehran became engulfed in flames and crews were battling it for hours when the building suddenly in just a few seconds collapsed in a massive cloud of dust. it all happened on live television. at least 30 firefighters were killed. dozens of others injured. the tower was once the tallest building in iran's capital. breaking this morning. two u.s. stealth bombers hit camps in libya. 80 fighters killed. it's the first time b-2 bombers have been used in combat since 2011. >> the larger student loan collector is involved in a lawsuit accused of cheating millions of borrowers. navient once part of sally may allegedly made it harder to repay loans by processing pays incorrectly and deceived borrowers at every step. a sheriff's deputy in rural north dakota has been killed in a shoot-out with a suspect. this all comes one day after a police detective near dallas was killed. nationwide the number of officers shot on duty has risen dramatically in the last year. and police in new hampshire say they cannot believe the driver of this honda civic was able to walk away from this crash. they say the car lost control and slid underneath, you see it there, under a tanker truck and got pinned against a concrete barrier. the driver somehow managed to climb out of the window. >> the most expensive home listed in the united states. includes 12 bedrooms. 21 bathrooms. you see a movie theater and a candy room featuring what the l.a. times describes as you see it there towering cylinders of sweets. it can all be yours for $250 million. and comes with a $30 million car collection. and seven full time staff members that the current owner will pay for two years. >> a helicopter, too. >> the crazy thing is i've been in that home. >> really? >> that used to be my lot. i sold the developer that lot and regret it now. >> oh, my gosh. >> wow. >> well, you can buy it back for 250 million. >> he offered and i have to say, i have to ask george first. oh, what a story. but all right. thank you. amy. and now to the backlash that's growing this morning over the new movie "a dog's purpose" after tmz posted this video showing a german shepherd being forced into rushing waters and gio benitez joins us with the story and good morning, gio. >> reporter: good morning. listen, it doesn't matter who you are, if you love dogs, this video is hard to watch. it went viral overnight and now it seems everyone is demanding answers from the writer of the story to the film's top voice actors. >> pull over. >> there's a ton of traffic. >> reporter: time after time our furry four-legged friends -- >> lassie, you've come back. >> reporter: -- have stolen the show on the silver screen. >> toto, i have a feeling we're not in kansas anymore. >> reporter: but the latest hollywood film to focus on man's best friend is now coming under fire. >> okay. ready? go! >> reporter: the soon-to-be released "a dog's purpose" being investigated after this video obtained by tmz became public. in the video a german shepherd named hercules appears to be struggling to stay out of a pool of rushing water. a handler seemingly trying to force the dog in. the dog then seems to go underwater. >> cut it. >> reporter: before being rescued. the response to the video swift, peta calling for a boycott of the film. american humane, an organization that ensures safety on set hiring an investigator to look into the matter and suspending the safety rep who worked on that film and actor josh gad who provides the voice for the dog in "a dog's purpose" taking to twitter saying i have reached out to the production team and studio to ask for an explanation for these disturbing images. and while the movie studio is not commenting, producers of the film speaking to tmz saying on the day of the shoot hercules did not want to perform the stunt portrayed on the tape. so the amblin production team did not proceed with filming that shot but the stunt seems to have been completed eventually. the amblin production company telling tmz, hercules is happy and healthy but this morning many questioning that troubling video. and those producers at amblin, steven spielberg's production company said it had been rehearsed so hercules would be comfortable with the water but on the day of the shoot hercules wasn't having it. >> do you blame the dog? >> i can't think of anything offhand, no. >> at what point did you find out? >> i don't want to discuss that. >> can you talk about what brought it all around? >> i don't want to discuss that either. >> reporter: 18-year-old alexis manigo couldn't give us those details concerned that anything she says could eventually be used against the woman she still calls mom. >> they want me to hate her and it's not in me to. >> reporter: but newly released court documents now showing that alexis may have found out the truth approximately a year and a half ago. two separate tips last year first sending investigators from jacksonville, florida, to walterboro, south carolina. earlier this month detectives interviewing two witnesses, one saying williams confessed to him that she stole a baby from a hospital in jacksonville. the other, that alexis told her she had been kidnapped from a hospital in jacksonville, her mother even telling her that she was kamiyah mobley, the name given to her by her birth mother. police say they discovered the birth certificate and social security card alexis used in high school were both fraudulent. according to the affidavit, her social taken from a virginia man who died in 1983. >> how do you go to school when you don't have a legitimate social security number? you know, how do you go to the doctor and these are things that a kid is not going to know. but the system should know. >> reporter: and gloria williams is being held in jail here in jacksonville, florida. expected back in court in february and has not entered a plea on any charges. robin. >> eva, thank you. for more let's bring in dan abrams. a lot to talk about. >> yeah. >> so, allegedly alexis knew more than a year ago, told a friend about it and some people are wondering, there's no way she could face charges here. >> right. so typically it is not required to report a crime, right? you're not a criminal for not reporting a crime. but if someone was an accessory after the fact, what does that mean? if they helped to conceal it in some way, shape or form, someone else could be charged. do i think that's going to happen? no. do i think there's any chance that she will be charged for helping to conceal this? absolutely not. look, from -- you just look at it from her perspective as an 18-year-old even if she knew a year and a half ago, she's the victim here. you know, she is a victim. she was stolen away from a hospital. she was brought up by the only mother that she knew and so you have to sympathize with her plight. doesn't mean you have to sympathize with the woman who brought her up. >> no, and there's very little sympathy other than from alexis herself but other people are like, hey, you snatch a child from their parents, there's just no excuse for that so it's not surprising that bail was not set. >> that's right. so, you know, bail was not set on the kidnapping charge. there was another charge where bail was set which is irrelevant since bail was not set but i think what's going to be really interesting in this case is the potential sentencing, right? it's pretty clear that she's going to be guilty. is she going to plead not, et cetera, we'll see. but to hear her testify at the sentencing on behalf of the woman that brought her up. >> alexis, you're talking about. >> yeah, yeah, so the question there is going to be how much does a judge give that? does it offend you? >> well, i think it's an inappropriate observation. there's one first lady and she'll do remarkable things. >> reporter: we know who is not making the move to washington, donald trump's two grown sons, donald jr. and eric, who instead will be entrusted with running their father's vast business empire, a move slammed by critics concerned it does not adequately guard against conflicts of interest. and how is this going to work exactly. you said you're in each other's office seven times a day. how will you all of a sudden pull the plug on that. >> my father has the biggest responsibility of any person arguably on the planet and that's to run the united states of america. his focus is going to be running this country. >> reporter: and that reality along with the weight of its responsibility is something don jr. believes may not yet have fully sunk in for his father. do you think it might happen when your father puts his hand on his childhood bible? any similarities there? >> you know, what is it about working for mark burnett that makes you want to lead a g7 country? but there's some similarities but really quite a difference. canada is a completely different society because we actually have two cultures, french and english. two official languages, francais and anglais. they're different. but at the same time we have enjoyed a relationship with the u.s. for 150 years but that's about to change. when trump becomes president he's talking about putting policies in place that have many canadians concerned because he's going to lower taxes. he's going to deregulate oil and gas and may put border taxes in place and trudeau has gone the other direction and added carbon taxes and made taxes much higher personally and many canadians are beginning to realize, uh-oh we didn't realize trump was coming and who will negotiate with donald trump? that's what is so interesting about the canadian situation. a lot of angst now and they're looking for new leadership. >> doesn't he already sound like a candidate? >> i was going to say, okay, speaking of new leadership you have to face off against 13 other candidates. >> yes, i do. >> what made you throw your hat into the ring? this is a big decision for you. you're a busy man with a lot of different things going on. >> you know, i'm not a politician. i don't owe anybody any favors. i've never been involved in politics and if you're watching what's happening all around the world, it's not politics as usual anymore. >> that's true. >> people want different kind of leadership. they want someone who is actually has a track record in managing something. not just the same old politicians. so, i'm facing off against good men and women, but they're all politicians and all of a sudden we've got millions of canadians who got to know me obviously through television and that's what's interesting is you're starting to see a lot of politicians emerge using the platform of television because really after eight years, people know me quite well on "shark tank" all around the world, frankly and in canada as well but they want something different. i'm that change agent. >> wow. wow. >> i'm mesmerized. >> i haven't ever heard you speak like that. >> it's going to be an interesting journey but i think canada is a really great partner of the united states and we've got to get back in sync with it but donald has made it clear it's not business as usual and here it comes so we'll see interesting times as we will in america. there is no question about it. >> we can't wait to see and keep our eye on you, see how you're doing and good luck with that. you have a battle ahead of you for that but also paul mccartney, he's got a battle too. and it's the beatles legal battle. paul mccartney filing a new lawsuit against sony music for ownership rights to some of the beatles' most treasured songs and, sunny, you're here to discuss this and when we say treasured song, we mean "i want to hold your hand." >> she'll make her own rules because there are no rules. it doesn't come with a job description, first lady and it also comes with a great deal of suspicion. people worry, you know, she has all that power and she can't be fired and she's a woman and all of that worries people. but i think that she will find a way to find her voice in the role. it's tough for her because she's never been in politics. she's never been first lady of a state which was hard for michelle obama, frankly, but i think that she'll find her way. >> it's taken them all a little bit of time. >> right, exactly. >> okay, that is how we perceive her publicly. privately what is the role of first lady? >> the president is the commander in chief. in so many ways she is the caretaker in chief. she takes care of the family and we saw michelle obama take care of sasha and malia as mother but vitally important for her to take care of her son and she's staying here in new york to provide some continuity for him before moving to washington. and to take care of her husband too. nancy reagan famously sort of monitored her husband's schedule to ensure he wasn't being overtaxed or overburdened. that's what first ladies do as well. >> private role of the first lady also being the only person who can tell the president the truth and whether that's true in this marriage, who knows. >> that's a wife's role. >> a wife's role. >> okay, well, mark, cokie, i'll see you there in washington. >> we'll be together. >> tonight, you can see an inside look at america's new first family, a special edition of "20/20" and tomorrow it starts at 7:00 a.m. eastern on abc and "gma." [ applause ] it's called "lost in london." it is live streaming. are you getting this, folk, directly to the theaters? one take. >> no breaks. >> if anybody can do it our man woody harrelson can do it. no pressure here. my man, you've been in the business for many years now. you've done this, you've done that. we've never seen something like this. why did you come up with this type of idea? >> well, you know, a big fan of theater, i just -- i love theater and so i -- you know, i wanted to merge theater and film and so i had this thing that i wrote based on something that actually happened to me and i thought, you know, be cool to do this in realtime. the time that i thought you couldn't really do something in realtime, but since then the technology developed and so i thought, yeah, i'm going to shoot this in under 100 minutes in realtime but then i thought, well, where is the theater in that because there's no live audience. well, that was the thought that has since caused me many sleepless nights. including last night. yeah, and so now that's what we're trying. >> so maybe you're sleep deprived but look so calm despite the fact you have 30 actors, 14 locations, 65 minutes streamed to 500 movie theaters. what is it that keeps you up? >> just a lot of technical things going on and any of those things goes wrong, it could spell disaster for us. i feel great about the actors, i feel great about the story. i think there's some really funny stuff in this that people will get a good chuckle at and i suspect there's a lot of your viewers right now who are not wanting to tune in to see this thing succeed. like a car crash. >> either way i think it's going to be remarkable. you mentioned something about woody about the technical. i read you've done two rehearsals so tar and in one of them you lost the feed. the live feed. so what is the backup plan if that happens? >> well, i'm probably going to jump off the bridge into the thames. >> not much of a plan there. >> no. we -- you know, what we'll do is we filmed one last night that went all the way through and if, god forbid, we do lose the feed we'll have to just fall back on that one and feel dreadful about it but i'm hoping that won't happen. >> you mentioned earlier -- >> by the way, i want to thank you guys. i want to thank you guys for being the first guys to talk about this and for, you know, being interested in the idea. it really means a lot to me. thank you. [ applause ] >> i had a lot of -- a lot of great coaches growing up in mississippi and louisiana. my college coach at southeastern. but it's not somebody that one coach that i wanted to play for and i never applied and i should have was pat summitt. i really wanted to play for pat summitt. i've been thinking about her a lot. [ applause ] just this week on sunday the clinic, the alzheimer's clinic bearing her name opened. it wasn't just with her, but she was about building young women, it wasn't just building your game but your personality. >> what about you? >> i had two. my high school coach ron hoover, he kicked me off the team my junior year. i got suspended because i was in the library studying and this lady said i was being insubordinate. first of all, i had to look up the word. what that meant and i really wasn't but it was a rule on the team if you get suspended you get kicked off the team and i was the guy, i was the quarterback. that broke my heart. but it really set me straight from this on i understood teamwork, i understood being a leader and everything and the second one was my pop warner coach. coach dave. we had to have a certain gpa to remain on the team. his wife was unbelievable, helen, and when i got selected -- when i got selected to the hall of fame, i flew him to the super bowls, everywhere, and he was so excited that he had a heart attack that week and he passed. and that broke my heart because what he meant to me, the first ti time i ever flew on a plane and they exposed me to so much that he and his wife was a dear blessing to my life. i wouldn't be here without them. >> wow. >> that's what this is all about.
