you, the american people. i am your voice. speculation growing this morning about hillary clinton's pick to join her ticket ahead of the democrats' convention. massive life-threatening heat wave. 25 states from california to new york on alert as temperatures top 100 degrees forcing this highway to buckle. more than 100 million americans feeling the heat. new warnings as the dangerous weather moves east. he's out. one of the most powerful people in all of media, fox news chief roger ailes resigns after those sexual harassment charges. outrage is growing over reports of a $60 million payout. we have some of what fox's top talent are saying now. ♪ there they are ♪ dollar bills and sia bringing the "thrills" live in central park topping charts, stunning crowds. now swinging live on to our stage for a giant performance this morning. ♪ look at central park this morning. how many people have come out for sia, the wigs are out. they were lining up all night long. this is the biggest crowd yet this summer for her concert, cannot wait for that. it's coming up. there was also a lot of excitement in cleveland for donald trump with that speech. a lot of reaction pouring in, as well, it's the longest one i've ever seen, 75 minutes' long. he painted a dark picture of america today. said only he can fix it and democrats led by hillary clinton and bernie sanders lash back on twitter. clinton's tweet, you are not our voice. >> and, of course, trump's entire family was there to support him. but all eyes were on the youngest trump, barron, the one child who did not make a speech at the convention. certainly got a lot of attention last night because, yeah, he was having a tough time. he's 10 years old sitting through the entire speech, yawning, definitely past his bedtime, i would say. abc's tom llamas was there for all of the excitement on the floor and he joins us now from cleveland with the very latest. good morning, tom. >> reporter: amy, good morning to you. also striking how much barron trump looks just like his father even at the age of 10. now, you could say donald trump pretty much covered everything last night and he almost did because it was the longest speech of his political career. the big question this morning, will voters remember what donald trump said last night instead of everything else that happened at his convention? the balloon drop, the confetti, the celebrating, all for donald trump. >> i humbly and gratefully accept your nomination for the presidency of the united states. >> reporter: under a giant trump digital banner, the republican nominee for president launching right into his law and order theme. >> the attacks on our police and the terrorism of our cities threaten our very way of life. any politician who does not grasp this danger is not fit to lead our country. >> reporter: trump not backing off his tough stance on illegal immigration. >> we are going to build a great border wall to stop illegal immigration. to stop the gangs and the violence and to stop the drugs from pouring into our communities. >> reporter: and the mention of hillary clinton's name sending the crowd into a frenzy, trump building the case against his rival. >> this is the legacy of hillary clinton -- death, destruction, terrorism and weakness. >> reporter: the billionaire also speaking to blue collar voters. >> these are people who work hard, but no longer have a voice. i am your voice. >> reporter: chants of usa breaking out. >> all: usa, usa! >> reporter: and when a protester unveiled a sign that read build bridges, not walls, trump staying composed not attacking and revving up the crowd with this reaction. >> how great are our police and how great is cleveland? [ cheers and applause ] >> reporter: earlier in the night ivanka introducing him, she's been there from the start when he announced his candidacy. >> for more than a year, donald trump has been the people's champion and tonight he is the people's nominee. at my father's company, there are more female than male executives. women are paid equally for the work that we do, and when a woman becomes a mother, she is supported, not shut out. >> reporter: before the night's end trump returned to hillary clinton. >> my opponent asks her supporters to recite a three-word loyalty pledge, it reads, i'm with her. i choose to recite a different pledge. my pledge reads, i'm with you, the american people. >> reporter: trump's family and his running mate mike pence's family joining him on stage and before leaving the convention hall, trump making this promise. >> we will make america strong again. we will make america proud again. we will make america safe again. and we will make america great again. god bless you and good night. i love you! >> reporter: and trump seeming to make history last night as the first republican candidate to ever address the lgbtq community from the convention hall. trump saying if he becomes president he will do everything to protect the citizens in that community, george. >> tom, thanks. let's bring in our political team, matt doud, donna brazile and jon karl. usually they take the opportunity to show a different side of themself, maybe reach out to voters who have some doubts. donald trump doubled down on exactly who he was, the crowd loved it. how about those outside that hall? >> well, here's a guy that now wants to totally embrace the law and order part and came across as sort of batman, the crime fighting superhero, but he came across more as the dark knight in the course of that speech last night. i thought it's okay to go talk about all the problems in america because two-thirds of the country think we're off on the wrong track and more than half of the country thinks they've lost the american dream in the course of this, but i thought he should have moved to more uplifting language, something more optimistic, because voters want you to understand their fears and move to their hopes. >> donna brazile, democratic strategist, anything here last night worry you? >> not really. this was a classic donald trump what i call rally. a rally where he tried to tell the faithful, look, i'm your strong man. i can make everything happen for you. in fact, donald trump last night said i can fix every problem basically in the whole world because he alone has the superpowers to do it. >> on day one. >> but the problem, george, is that donald trump had an opportunity, an easy pitch to the american people. he's the outsider, he's the anti-establishment candidate. donald trump could have said, america, i know how to get things done by bringing us together. he failed to do that. >> classic donald trump, also echoes of richard nixon. >> absolutely and he was -- his speech has been panned by a lot of what he would call the elites as being too dark, too negative, too pessimistic. but he's speaking like nixon in a direct echo to what he called last night the forgotten americans, the silent majority, who feel left behind by the economy over the last several decades, who feel concern about riding crime in our cities, terrorism, that's who he's speaking to. >> okay, hold on. we'll come back and talk about the democrats but now let's go to amy. all right, george, and yes, all eyes are turning to the democratic convention kicking off monday in philadelphia. take a look live at the stage there. it was just revealed as anticipation builds over who hillary clinton will choose as her running mate. abc's cecilia vega is on the campaign trail in tampa, florida, for us this morning. good morning, cecilia. >> reporter: amy, good morning to you. this has been a process shrouded in secrecy, even the big question of when this announcement will happen, we know that hillary clinton is expected to appear with her vp pick at some point during a two-day swing through florida. that starts today. this morning, crunch time for hillary clinton. her field of vp picks narrowing and the potential running mates talking about everything but the veepstakes. the name rising to the top of the pack, virginia senator tim kaine acknowledging he's in the running but not giving any hints. >> it's kind of surreal, but, you know, being mentioned is -- has no connection with, you know, anything. >> reporter: another contender, new jersey senator cory booker. tweeting this photo saying, proud to be in cleveland supporting secretary clinton and pushing back against the hate, hyperbole and lies. but while he was willing to go there on donald trump -- >> it's as if truth means nothing. >> reporter: booker played vague on the vp process. >> you're talking to a former football player. i'm happy to do what the coach asks me to do and play whatever role the team wants me to play. >> reporter: the democrats now releasing their all-star lineup for philly. a who's who of political superpower from the current president and first lady to the former president and first husband hopeful. even old political rivals will take the stage from bernie sanders to elizabeth warren, and some major star power too. celebrities like demi lovato and eva longoria will have leading roles. lady gaga and lenny kravitz headlining parties. ♪ go ♪ and you're going to hear me roar ♪ >> reporter: even katy perry will be there calling herself clinton's number one fan. but before philly that vp pick and, amy, tim kaine is considered by many in the party to be the safe choice for hillary clinton. >> all right, and cecilia, we know the announcement could come at any moment. do we know how hillary is going to make that news known? >> well, even that is shrouded in secrecy, amy, but she has told her supporters that they'll get a text message letting them know who the name is so we expect to see that hopefully over the next day or so. >> checking their phones there. george, back to you. >> they don't want it to leak but come in on the phones. let's talk about this more. you just heard cecilia. tim kaine, the safe choice. a lot of democrats i talk to think if she really wanted to grab the mantel she would pick elizabeth warren. >> no question that hillary clinton has what i believe really four stellar individuals to pick from. i keep hearing tim kaine myself. and by the way, i'm a tim kaine fan. he was the chair of the democratic party as well as the former governor of virginia. you know, governor vilsack, the agriculture secretary, cory booker, there are so many people in the mix, i keep hearing that it is down to two candidates and we might know something later today. >> george, i think she's got a big choice to make. it's either a safe choice to say we're experienced and safe and steady, three yards and a cloud of dust, or she's going to throw it way down the field and make a big pick as you say to embrace the idea of change in the course of this. my thought is that they're afraid to put two women on a ticket and how that would be received by the american public. >> an interesting echo of 1992 when bill clinton chose al gore, you know, two guys from the south. here, we would have two women from the northeast, but my sense is they don't feel they need to throw a long ball here. they feel that, you know, kaine would be a solid pick. if he could help them take virginia they believe -- >> halfway home. >> it's her thing to try to step on any bounce donald trump's going to get from last night. >> i tell you one thing -- the last thing democrats will do is make the american people depressed. we'll help lift the spirit of america so get ready, gentlemen, i'm going to make them dance. i'm going to make you dance. george, after being with matt all week, i had to lose something. >> you guys will be here sunday on "this week" and of course the whole team every night of the democratic convention. back to amy. >> all right, george, thanks so much. now to the extreme, life-threatening heat affecting more than 100 million people across this country and ginger is outside our studio with the very latest on the triple-digit temperatures headed so many people's way. good morning to you, ginger. >> good morning, amy. and good morning, everybody. we have temperatures in the mid to upper 70s already here in parts of the northeast but it's not just that temp, it is the dew point, the amount of moisture in the air, and that's why in chicago the temperatures only 91 but it felt over 100 and they had the ambulances ready for the firefighters. that's how they're protecting themselves and so many cities, towns, municipalities going to be doing that this weekend as we go through this. look at denison, texas, a crack in the road there buckled because of the heat. they went to 99. they'll go to 100. the heat advisories from louisiana to mississippi, right up through chicago and minneapolis. look, still very warm. it'll feel like 111 in des moines later this afternoon and here's a look at saturday. washington, d.c., it'll feel like 110, george. >> oh, my goodness, 110. we're going to move on now to a major terror arrest in rio ahead of the olympics. ten isis suspects rounded up and charged with planning an attack on the games. abc's ryan smith is here with the latest. good morning, ryan. >> reporter: good morning, george. the suspects reportedly including a minor discussed potential attacks and two of their group still haven't been caught. this morning, two suspects on the loose and ten others under arrest. suspected of planning terrorist attacks at the upcoming olympic games in rio de janeiro. the operation sweeping across ten brazilian states. [ speaking a foreign language ] >> reporter: brazilian officials saying the all brazilian group was isis inspired and mostly organized online but they were absolutely amateur with no preparation. officials saying the group wanted to start training in martial arts and learn how to shoot, even trying to buy a gun online. something no organized cell would do. no specific targets were mentioned and investigators still searching for clues digging through the suspects' cell phones and computers. with the games just two weeks away, security on alert across the host city and an estimated 500,000 visitors are expected to travel to see these games. just last week, the brazilian government releasing an additional $24 million to beef up security. an estimated 80,000 soldiers and police will patrol the streets during the games. brazilian officials believe those two suspects on the loose will be arrested soon and a judge overseeing the case saying the suspects use arabic code names but none appear to have arab ancestry. amy. >> all right, thanks so much. and now to outrage growing over that police shooting in miami. protests overnight after police shot an unarmed black man who was a behavioral therapist. authorities are now saying there is more to the story and abc's gio benitez is in north miami with the very latest on the investigation. good morning, gio. >> reporter: amy, good morning to you. here at the police department the investigation will now focus on why that officer fired his gun. the officer and the union now saying he did not intend to shoot that therapist. >> please don't shoot, please! "new york" magazine reporting ailes' office has been moved to another building and that, while they are still negotiating an exit package, he could walk away from the company with $60 million. and abc news has learned this morning that ailes will continue on advising murdoch, the new chairman. a source inside the company telling us that ailes will serve in an informal capacity, he will only be advising murdoch and not the fox news company. his offices have been moved outside the building. amy. >> all right, rebecca, thanks so much. our legal team dan abrams and sunny hostin joins news and, dan, if there is evidence that these allegations are true, how then does fox keep ailes on and give him according to one report $60 million? >> well, first of all i don't think they're keeping him on, right, and i think this notion of an adviser is pr spin. he's out. he's done. he's advising rupert murdoch in some sort of personal capacity. secondly, they would say the investigation is ongoing. we haven't drawn any conclusions yet but what we did do, they would say, is we took action fast to get him away from employees and now, again, i don't believe it's going to end up with $60 million either. if the contract, let's say, says roughly $40 million they may make a business decision which says we'd rather not litigate this. remember roger ailes' position is i didn't harass anybody and, if they say we're not going to pay you because you violated our contract, they're going to end up in a lawsuit with roger ailes. >> and sunny, notably fox in its statement didn't even mention the sexual harassment charges or allegations. what do you make of that? >> that was very interesting. but i think these things are really negotiated out, right, so they couldn't do that, my guess. but the bottom line is they did take just decisive action and that's very important. when you have a sexual harassment claim and when it's substantiated if you are the parent company you have to take action and that action generally is take the bad actor out of the picture and that is what they've done. >> and i think it's important to note that a lot of what we're hearing, i think, is spin, which is i think that roger ailes negotiated every single word that went into the public statement. >> absolutely. he and murdoch are friends. they've been friends for years. >> so, when we hear, for example, he's going to be an adviser and $60 million, you know, let's be very careful to take all that with a grain of salt -- >> he's not going to be around women at fox news. he's not going to be around women at 21st century fox. he's not going to be around women in that kind of powerful capacity because that's what sexual harassment is about. it's about power. and so you have to take the power away from the bad actor. >> and this isn't just about one woman. there are reports that as many as ten women have stepped forward, including megyn kelly. can any of those women sue and does that do anything to the others? >> so, the statute of limitations in new york is three years. so it would have to be within the last three years. i think you're going to certainly see the gretchen carlson lawsuit continue. this doesn't change that lawsuit because she sued him and not fox. but this is now providing an enormous amount of ammunition for gretchen carlson, as well. >> no question. >> and sunny, not only are you a lawyer, you also worked at fox news as a woman there. >> quite a long time ago but -- >> but you were there. what do you make of how fox has handled the situation so far? >> you know, i am impressed with how quickly they've acted. remember, this lawsuit was filed about two weeks ago and i think a lot of people are surprised that they acted so quickly. they're removing the person that really created fox news. that says a lot and says a lot about i think the parent company. >> they could have said we're going to wait until the investigation concluded, right. we have to wait for the recommendation. >> could that speak to the evidence that's involved? >> absolutely. there's no question it does, right. >> let's face it, i think a lot of people were pooh-poohing gretchen carlson's lawsuit. they were saying that it was because she was fired. it was retribution for that. now we know there must be more. they hired paul weiss, that's a very exclusive law firm, blue chip law firm. it's world renowned, and when paul weiss comes in and says we have found something that leads to the ouster of roger ailes. >> remember, she's still going to have to prove her individual case, i mean, just sort of looking at this in the macro will help her but she still will have to prove her case in court. >> and let's remember, she only sued roger ailes, that makes it very personal to her and i think it lends credibility. >> it wasn't about money. it was about justice for her? >> yes, they had a choice and they made the right choice. you know the nba is based upon a core value of diversity, inclusion and fairness and respect to the individuals that work for the nba as well as the fans. you know, we have a new and improved nba whereas today it's about guys stepping out in front of social issues and not being afraid to say, hey, i am this person now. we look at the examples we have in jason collins, john amaechi, those players openly gay. they came out. they're former players and now players that are now assistant coaches in the league so you have a situation where before it was about bill russell and jackie robinson leading the way for civil rights and human rights in the game of sports. now, you have younger players like lebron james, carmelo anthony and chris paul and dwyane wade leading the charge to try to make a difference, because they have a platform today. >> so you're saying players, yourself being a former player, are really behind this, everybody is standing up, standing behind this decision? >> absolutely. this is something where now you have players that realize how much power they do have. when i was speaking on adam silver yesterday about this situation i said, do you want to make sure that you're continuously making sure players feel comfortable in a process that they feel organize and feel more together? sometimes we have a little separation and that's where the -- you know, people get into the situations of getting separated. this is all about staying together. it's no fault of the charlotte hornets. michael jordan has done a tremendous job there but it's more about what that state represents. you cannot have the core values of what the nba has and have an all-star game there with the beliefs of what north carolina feels right now. >> yeah, nba players, you have a big voice and you are using it, bruce, thank you so much. we're going to switch gears now and talk about some legal trouble surrounding the "wolf of wall street," the film starring leonardo dicaprio, of course, and now the justice department is investigating the production company behind the movie alleging at least $64 million was laundered in funding the company. larry hackett, former editor in chief of "people" magazine, friend to us, is joining us now and, larry, what say you about this. >> well, it's a wild story. basically, this fund was created in malaysia to build developments in the country and help a poor country essentially. according to the justice department it was looted by cronies around the prime minister. two are involved in red granite. they took $100 million and they funded "wolf of wall street." it's gone on to make nearly $400 million. as part of that, one of these partners wooed leonardo dicaprio. they took trips to las vegas and spent over a million dollars and spent time partying on a yacht at the world cup. they actually went to australia in 2012 for new year's eve, enjoyed the new year's eve in australia, then chartered a 747 and flew to vegas to do new year's all over again. so there is a lot of money washing around here. it was involved in the making of this picture. a lot of it was spent wooing leonardo dicaprio and the feds say it was basically stolen from the malaysian government. >> and if they're found to be guilty of this, any blowback on leo? >> well, look, it underlines him being a party boy. these people knew the way to leo's heart, let's go to vegas and hang out on yachts so i don't think it does anything to change the impression of him. i think they're also going to question him to some degree about how much money do you think was spent, do you know anything about how the money came to these people. did they ever in these times of partying say to you, where the money came from. there's no implication that he knew anything and was conscious of this, but i think it's part of the investigation they're going to try to find if he knew how they got their loot. >> thanks very much. now to a big headline about homes. new report for the national association of realtors announced the sales have reached their highest level in more than nine years. barbara corcoran here from "shark tank" and author of "shark tales." are we in a bubble, barbara? >> you're never supposed to mention the word bubble again. it's been ten years since we had a bubble. what we have right now is a full steam ahead market as best a trifecta as you could get, we've got great jobs, seven times more jobs created this month than last month, cheap money, mortgage rates under 4% so people could buy a bigger house, and what we have, we have a ton of people coming into the market and a shortage of listings. we have 6% fewer homes on the market now than we had 12 months ago so people are panicked, i can't get my hands on the house that they just fell in love with, they're saying. >> it sounds like a good time to test the market. what advice would you give potential sellers? >> well, the most important thing is to realize that you cannot overprice a home and that's nothing new and then try to bring it down in small increments. nobody wants it and you'll get the low bidders to come out and bid on your house. and the second, most important thing is, hire professional photographers to take pictures of your house. everyone shops online and if you don't have great pictures online nobody is coming to see your house. that's the new curb appeal in today's modern world. those are the two most important things. >> go ahead. >> bruce, i see you nodding your head up there. you want to jump in here? "star trek: beyond." the "enterprise" exploring space like never before battling mysterious new villains with old friends, but before spock can explore the unknown, he's got to deal with something all too familiar, girl trouble. >> yeah. >> did you guys break up? what did you do? >> a typically reductive inquiry, doctor. >> you know, spock, if an earth girl says, it's me, not you, it's definitely you. >> so, zachary, why do we need to see this movie? >> well, to begin with it's the 50th anniversary of "star trek" so there's a reason. these people know, yeah. live long and prosper. >> live long and prosper, my friend. >> this is a really exciting chapter in our journey. it marries the essence of these characters with huge action, visual effects, justin lin, our new director who came from "the fast and furious" franchise brought such an infusion of excitement and energy to the movie and i think it really celebrates the origins of this incredible franchise which has been around for half a century which is remarkable in its own right. >> what's it like playing spock, a character we've known for so long? >> i mean, one of the most beloved characters in culture. it's a great honor really and especially because of my personal connection with leonard who i loved and who i miss very much but who's incredibly present in this movie in a special way, i think. we all carried him in our hearts while we were making this film and i think it shows on the screen. >> what's the best advice that leonard ever gave you about playing this role? >> it's interesting because the role brought us together but our friendship evolved beyond it almost immediately, and so by the end of his life it was only one little corner of our connection, and i learned so much about how to be fulfilled. he was an incredible man and so diverse in his creative pursuits as an actor, writer, director, incredible art collector, philanthropist, and he just really taught me, you know, that i'll -- i'll be lucky to have half as fulfilled a life as he did. >> you, in fact, just got involved in a beautiful documentary. >> yeah, his son adam made an incredible documentary called "for the love of spock" which explores his dad's relationship with the character and the impact that it had not only on millions of people but also on his family. it's a very personal and beautifully made film. >> you talk about him being diverse and want to finish by saying how diverse and talented you are. i happened to catch a little episode of "lip sync battle" in which you brought your "a" game. i hope we have the video. missy elliott. >> yeah, a little missy elliott, a little george michael combination. >> and cindy crawford as your guest. >> to support -- my secret weapon. it was amazing and like perfectly outside of my comfort zone. i had a great time and i would do that again any minute. >> i will watch again. >> all right. check it out. >> i hope everybody will watch you. >> yeah, this weekend. >> the film is terrific.
