Two records this week, the youngest participant and youngest correspondent for gma ever, akash. Flo rida in central park getting ready to kick off a Holiday Weekend. In our house this morning. 38 million americans expected to travel for memorial day. Youre looking live at some of the busiest airports in the land this morning. Those lines already forming, atlanta, chicago, l. A. , and, of course, many of those millions hitting the roads. Our team is out in full force for you right now. Of course, so many of those travelers could face that Severe Weather hitting so much of the country. A flash flood emergency in the south where more than a dozen College Students were trapped in a kentucky cave. Well take you inside the rescue. We begin though with abcs rob marciano in kansas where two tornados were reported. Good morning, rob. Good morning, george. Two through this area and one taking out this massive mature tree and slamming it into this home. This neighborhood is littered with trees and debris. Yesterday another frightening day across the central u. S. And a Long Duration of that for many it went all day and through the night. [ sirens ] overnight, lightning igniting the skies over the plains. These dramatic bolts crackling across oklahoma. In paducah, kentucky, a police car caught this massive lightning strike. So powerful it knocked the dash cam right from its mount. Also in kentucky, a dramatic rescue for 19 people stuck in this cave for over six hours. The group made up mostly of clemson geology students and their guides entered the cave at 10 00 a. M. For a tour. But then the flash floods came rushing in blocking the exits. The worst was the entrance because of all the water coming down. With no cell service in the cave the group followed the guides toward a known dry area called the attic. Two Police Officers called in to help but shortly after entering the cave they werent able to get out. I was scared. I mean, when your life is on the line youre kind of youre always going to be afraid. Reporter finally at 4 30 p. M. Rescuers made their way to the Group Leading them through high Water Holding a rope getting to the mouth of the cave where they were reunited with loved ones. Severe weather also wreaking havoc in texas. Thunderstorms and lightning. All that rain leading the flash floods across the state. Up to 16 inches north of houston. In waco cars trying to plow through the high water getting into trouble. The engine of this car catching on fire and backing up traffic for hours. A tornado in brian, texas, also igniting a fire. At least two twisters cutting through waumega, kansas and driver pulling over while getting hammered by hail. Blinding rain led this car to flip over. In the last 24 hours over 350 Severe Weather reports across 15 states and that doesnt even include all that flash flooding. By far the most widespread event this year and, george, im sure ginger is about to tell you were not quite done yet. Ginger is right here right now. Were not done yet. Hes right. Weve got severe storms in parts of text texas and hefty rains coming along with it and why we have the warnings and watches from austin to houston, wichita included. Up to kansas city. Thats for the next 24 hours or so, right. So a lot of places will still sigh the heavy rains then the atmosphere stabilizes after those storms move through then the heat of the day will start to become unstable again so the atmosphere churns back up in waco to dallas, bryan, celina, wichita included with the large hail, strong winds and potential for tornado later this afternoon and evening. At the same time were watching a storm in the atlantic. Thats right. We are still not yet in official hurricane season. But we may just see a named storm in the next 24 hours, 80 shot of this coming at you with the Holiday Weekend impacted from charleston back through parts of the georgia coast and up into North Carolina too. I think its heavy rain, its wind and certainly rip currents so something to watch for if youre traveling to the southeast. Absolutely. George. Thank you. In the middle of this Severe Weather an estimated 38 million traveling this weekend facing not just storms but those long Airport Security lines. The airlines say theyre pitching in. More of their employees are in the lines moving bins and doing nonsecurity jobs to help the tsa screen. And were seeing those technological advancements. I think its a really smart move on both their part, george. These are two people, especially donald trump who dont play by traditional rules and as you know, in the military or in business or even sports if you think about the forward pass, every time somebody innovated and didnt play by the traditional rules the opponent cried foul and they either adapt or they get run over. But what this does also right now, it highlights the fact that donald trump is wrapped up his nomination but Hillary Clinton is still in a fight with Bernie Sanders and its a real race in california. Reporter yeah, Donald Trumps coalesced the Republican Party and got that and moving on to independents. I think its a very smart move and highlights his victories and also undermines Hillary Clinton as shes not able to turn towards the general election. And i think shes faced she could easily lose the california primary, the last primary of the season as she heads into a convention, shes likely the nominee but she goes in very weakened. And will have to move very, very fast to corral all those Bernie Sanders supporters. Reporter which i think is going to be very difficult. Especially the Younger Voters that are not enthusiastic about her, george, so her only path to get those voters is make donald trump worse than herself as the alternative. Reporter Kenneth Starrs investigation into bill clintons affair nearly cost him the presidency, now starr losing his post as baylor president and coach art briles out of a job after the mishandling of Sexual Assault claims leaving the schools board, quote, shocked and outraged. He was once charged with righting the wrongs in society. The former federal judge and solicitor general best known for investigating bill clintons affair with Monica Lewinsky. But this morning, Kenneth Starr out as president of Baylor University after an investigation revealed the school mishandled and in some cases silenced Sexual Assault claims on campus. This report from independent investigators claiming the school chose not to report Sexual Violence and dating violence claims against multiple players. Improperly discredited complainants and reinforced an overall perception that football was above the rules. Recently two baylor Football Players convicted of Sexual Assault, another arrested. The scandal sacking football coach art briles who led the team from the rags to the riches of College Football, capturing the big 12 title in two of the last three seasons commanding a reported annual salary of nearly 6 million. Texting his players on thursday, i am no longer the head football coach. But accountability for the scandal also falling to starr. Saying in a statement, hes profoundly sorry to the victims who were not treated with the care, concern and support they deserve. Claiming he didnt know about allegations of violence until 2015 when he launched his own investigation, stephanie met personally with starr in december to discuss her own Sexual Assault. I wish they would have done more to help. If someone really believed that i was sitting in class next to my rapist, you know, more should have been done about it. Reporter starr will be shifted to School Chancellor and keep his position as professor at the law school. Meanwhile, baylors chairman saying in a statement theyll work to restore a, quote, tone of accountability within the football program, robin. Thank you. Will there be civil lawsuits and certainly regardless of how one might feel about the ncaa delving into areas of morality or criminal or Civil Justice its really likely that baylor will face ncaa implications as well and those types of things can have a longlasting impact even put a cloud over the program and university. Obviously the victims and their rights and restoring them as best we can of the utmost importance but in terms of the ramifications of the scandal i feel as if its just starting . Tell us how its going to longterm the potential to impact this program. Robin, i think its potentially devastating becaus its referenced in the report, before art briles arrived at baylor during the big 12 era which started in 1996, baylor had been 35 and 101. Now in four of the last five years won ten games on the cusp of making the College Football playoff. Had a Heisman Trophy winner and built a new stadium. But they dont have a long term history of having anyone come in there and be able to win football games. I think the cloud and the scrutiny that theyre going to be under over the next several months will make it a little bit difficult to find a football coach to replace art briles, certainly one of his caliber on the field, im speaking of. I think it could have a longlasting impact and potentially this entire thing could be devastating to them in terms of the football program. We move on to video raising questions about a Deadly Police shooting showing the moments before an unarmed man was killed in a Hotel Hallway and the widow speaking out and Kayna Whitworth has the story. This is the mesa police. Reporter watch in this newly released body cam video as mesa, arizona, Police Officers swarm a hotel room following reports of a man pointing a gun out the window. Reporter inside 26yearold Daniel Shaver a father of two in town for his pest control business having drinks along with two other guests at the hotel. According to authorities, he had two pellet guns he used for work inside the room. Thats where the video released by police ends. According to transcripts from the body cam video exclusively obtained by abc news, shaver then comes out unarmed following officers commands to crawl towards them begging them not to shoot. But officer Philip Brailsford fires five times killing the young father. Later telling investigators he thought shaver was reaching for a weapon. I perceived this as a threat. It was just a scary situation. Reporter but the Investigation Report indicating shaver was just trying to pull his shorts up as they were falling off. He was executed. He was begging for his life. It tore me apart how mean that they were to him. Reporter officer brailsford now facing charges of Second Degree murder. His attorney telling abc news he was following his training and all procedures. But shavers widow now demanding the release of the full body camera video. Yeah, so for years the cdc has been tracking these very resistant infections around the globe called cre, and theyve been on the rise, theyre mainly seen in elderly people, people with medical problems in the hospital, and theres only been one antibiotic called calistien that could treat it and a woman in person in pennsylvania who has a urinary tract infection is resistant to calistin. Were one step away from having untreatable bacterial infections. How concerned should we be about this . You know, you have to think back to before 1943, because thats only as long as weve had antibiotics, and before that, if you went in the hospital for a minor surgery or had pneumonia, these infections could be fatal and the big concern is that if this really develops, people going into the hospital who have medical problems, their lives could be at risk because we dont have antibiotics to treat them because the Drug Companies havent been making new antibiotics. When you were at the cdc, didnt you write a program that was geared toward if Something Like this should happen . Yeah, yeah. So what should we do . You know, when you think about resistance, you know, different types of resistance is from different causes. Some is from overuse in animals. Some is in the hospital and some from what we do. The first thing is you always want to make sure you take your antibiotics only if prescribed. Never use someone elses drugs and tell your doctor if youve had overseas travel because some of these very resistant germs are found in hospitals overseas. And then lastly you want to make sure that anyone who touches you in the hospital washes their hands, that you see it. Now, this interview here is going to take about 30 minutes. Okay. Are you going to be able to make it 30 minutes without looking at your phone . Im going to try, yes. You sure youre all right . I can do it. Reporter jason clark loves his smartphone. No surprise there. He is a 15yearold but he is so attached to it his family worries he might one day need therapy to get it under control. Youve been on how much . Four hours. Four hours and its just 3 00 in the afternoon. Reporter we asked jason to put an app on his phone to track his phone use. So, what was yesterday . Yesterday, six hours. Six hours. Reporter his mom, tamika, says there are days its been 8, even 12 hours. At home, at school, the library. The library with books, right . That makes me feel bad. Reporter between social media, music, texting and gaming, the hours add up, and mom says she thinks his phone use has crossed the line. When youre talking about addiction, youre talking about i cant live without it. Reporter you think hes dependent on that phone . Oh, i know he is. Reporter cell phone addiction isnt officially designated as a clinical disorder like drug or alcohol addiction, but dr. Edward spector thinks it should be. He treats exclusively people for what he calls compulsive use of technology. Their brains change in similar ways to real chemical addicts. That sounds nuts. Well, if you talk to the parents of my clients, they come in, and they say my kid is like a junkie and they feel like its an addiction. Reporter but when does it go from being normal acceptable teenage behavior to a problem that needs to be addressed. Spector says dont just focus on just the hours. When we talk about compulsion, its not the behavior but whether you have control over it. Reporter clark worries it fits the word addiction. Its affecting other parts of his life. As his smartphone use has gone up, grades have gone down and shes noticed changes in his behavior. Do you think he could be on the path that at some point its not enough to just take the phone from him, that you might have to get him some help . When somebody freaks out because youre taking something that they have an emotional attachment to, it is an addiction. Reporter jason says theres nothing abnormal about his phone use and doesnt believe it has a major impact on other parts of his life though he does admit he could probably stand to cut back later. Now, im about to end this interview. Whats the first thing youre going to do . Check my phone. All right. Lets talk about this with t. J. And caroline knorr, parenting editor at Common Sense Media. Welcome, caroline. We cant pretend the kids are the only ones addicted right here, but, caroline, lets talk about the kind of signs you should be looking for to figure out if your child is too dependent. At Common Sense Media we us say, you know your kid best. But, you know, there are some typical signs of, you know, a bigger problem, depression, slipping grades, hostility, kids who are highly sensitive, a strong preoccupation with their phone and not interested in the activities that they used to love. Nothing else. They only care about the phone. Meantime, t. J. , so many of these apps the kids get into, especially the gaming apps are designed to hook them. They suck them in and you feel like you have this obligation, like he we were joking around with him there, he couldnt stand to be in that interview almost for 30 minutes without like something im missing something in life over here. Again, you talk about you know your kids. Not just the hours, some can do it with three, some with eight. Eight hours on the phone, what else are they missing in life and how many opportunities walking by them to have normal everyday interaction. So still its not just the hours but think how much they are missing by looking down at that phone. You bring up a great point. These apps are designed to add a gaming element to texting and being social with your friends. They do. You talk about these vamping selfies. These kids. These are kids staying up late at night taking a picture of their sleepdeprived faces and posting it for their friends to see. That may not be true addiction but its very problematic behavior. The minute a parent sees that time to put the phone in another room late at night. Right . I absolutely suggest that they have them charge the phone in the parents bedroom at night. What else should parents do . Its really important for parents to set up screenfree times and screenfree zones and that needs to apply to parents as well as kids. Really limit multitasking because we think were good at multitasking, but kids really you know, it takes a moment to refocus, so try and get them to focus on one task at a time. No phones in the bedroom at night. No texting and driving for parents. And we always say, you are your kids digital role model. You really have to show your kids how to have healthy digital habits now that were all on our phones. The doctor was big on that point. When you said how many times do you say to your child, give me one second setting that example early on. Okay. Parents know best and parents have to show the way. Thank you, guys. Over to amy.
