[ cheers and applause ] and president obama trusted my judgment enough to ask me to be secretary of state. >> reporter: clinton also hammering down on sanders' plan to break up the big banks, questioning whether he has details. >> he could not explain how that would be done. he could not answer about afghanistan, about israel, about counterterrorism. i think you need to have the judgment on day one to be both president and commander in chief. >> reporter: and she was put on the hot seat herself refusing to commit to releasing those transcripts of her paid speeches to wall street firms. >> it is your democratic opponent and many democratic voters who want to see those transcripts. it's not about the republicans. >> everybody does it, okay, i will do it but let's set and expect the same standard on tax returns. >> reporter: this was definitely a debate unlike any other. sanders needs a landslide victory here in new york to help his chances of winning the nomination and he's now taking some heat for heading to the vatican for a conference right after that debate ended. he landed there this morning. hillary clinton is leaving town too, robin. she is heading to california for a big weekend of fund-raisers with the clooneys. >> not a day off for any of the candidates, it seems. >> or us. >> that's true. >> or our political team. jon karl and matthew dowd here with me and, matthew, we got a lot of shouting. the candidates seem to be getting pretty tired of each other. the big question, did anything change after last night. >> what i recall is the last time there was that much shouting in brooklyn, ralph kramden and alice were involved in "the honeymooners." >> i was wondering which tv show you would go to. >> one from the '50s. i think it's going to be a close race in new york. i think that debate highlighted bernie sanders' authenticity and it highlighted hillary clinton's competency and experience in the course of this. i don't know how much the debate will move that but i think the race is closing and i think sanders has an outside chance of winning the new york primary. >> it is a must win for bernie sanders. >> reporter: it absolutely as cecilia said he not only needs to win in new york, he needs to win in a landslide to catch up in the delegates but, look, bernie sanders last night looked and sounded like a candidate who really believes he can win this thing. going after hillary clinton in a way that was much more personal, almost contemptuous of her. the bottom line here for hillary clinton is she took some serious shots from bernie sanders and had to go back at him in a way that's going to make it harder for her to eventually get those sanders supporters if and when she gets the nomination. >> the question i want to bring to matthew dowd. we've seen that on the republican side. real acrimony. this is the first time we really saw it bubble up. how hard will it be for the democrats to come back together? >> there is a huge emotional rift but there's also a huge demographic rift with older voters being on one side, younger voters being on the other. and different demographics on income. i think the best healing balm for a party that's in a rift is the common enemy and i think that's their hope whether it's donald trump or ted cruz, that that common enemy will unite the party. >> which is why hillary clinton is running ads against trump in new york. thanks very much. to robin. >> all right, george, now to the republicans. all three presidential candidates under one roof last night speaking at a gop gala here in manhattan as hundreds of protesters gathered outside. there's a new national poll out showing donald trump with a double-digit lead. abc's tom llamas is at trump international with the latest. good morning, tom. >> reporter: robin, donald trump woke up this morning to some very good news. "the new york post" a newspaper which has had so much fun with him over the years now endorsing him for president. one of his hometown papers. you mentioned those high poll numbers but trump's rivals are not surrendering new york. this as trump is now dealing with another problem, what he's describing as a group of benedict arnolds. this morning, a new fight for donald trump that's coming straight from the boardroom. >> come on, time is money. >> reporter: a group of "apprentice" alumni like kwame jackson and tara dowdell disavowing the front-runner who they once fought to work for on tv. >> i do not think he's qualified or competent or knows the issues. >> the rhetoric we've heard is not only hateful but dangerous. >> reporter: trump responding saying "total dishonesty and disloyalty. they should be careful or i'll play hours of footage of them individually praising me. ask how successful they've been since they left. six failing wanna-bes out of hundreds of contestants. so sad." in new york, trump helping raise money for local republicans while at the same time criticizing the national party for running a, quote, rigged system when it comes to delegates. >> i'm right now millions of votes ahead of my closest rival, millions of votes. you know, people don't talk about votes anymore. they talk delegates. by the way, i happen to be hundreds of delegates ahead too. >> reporter: washington. thanks for joining us. you heard donald trump complaining about the rigged rules on the republican side. he also has an op-ed in this morning's "wall street journal." here's what he says. what we are seeing now is not a proper use of the rues but a flagrant abuse of the rules. delegates are supposed to reflect the decisions of voters but the system is being rigged by party operatives with double agent delegates who reject the decision of voters. your response? >> well, look, the rules were put out there over a year ago. it's up to the campaigns to understand them, so in a vote system, depending on the outcome of the vote candidates receive delegates. those candidates must vote for that candidate, for that winner, so they're actually bound to vote for the winner, nothing is being taken away. and then when those elections happen for who those delegates are in those states, that's the process of the campaigns intimately involved with and who wins those elections and who doesn't is up to the campaigns to make sure that those people win and that's what he's complaining about. >> mr. trump also writing that he wants to reform the system, wants to work with you to reform the system. do you think the system needs reform and have you spoken with mr. trump about it? >> well, i mean the system has been around for a long time. it was good enough for abraham lincoln. i think it's good enough for whoever our nominee is going to be. so, look, this is democracy in action. both political parties use a similar system. the other piece of this is that this is a convention and i think that we're losing sight of what the word convention actually means. it is a coming together of our party members to write rules of our party, to elect officers, that's what conventions are. >> you say it's a coming together. it sounds like it's going to be a breaking apart. >> no, you know what i mean. it's the coming together of delegates to write the rules and elect officers. and that's what we're doing. >> but meantime, the democrats are making hay of this. the chair debbie wasserman schultz saying they are in a civil war food fight. at the end of their convention the republican party will not be the republican party of today and they will likely blow themselves to smithereens. aren't you worried about a convention where no one is happy? >> debbie doesn't have any room to talk. they're gouging each other's eyes out and the director of the fbi is reviewing a possible indictment of hillary clinton. so, i mean, i don't think she's got anywhere to talk but, no, it isn't easy. i'm not trying to claim it isn't and there is drama but that's what our party needs to do, come together, pick a nominee, come together and put our eye on the prize which is the white forcing the pilot to take immediate action. >> we have an emergency inbound. >> reporter: a heart-stopping moment for the 57 passengers aboard a delta flight from laguardia to nashville. >> emergency is a cracked windshield. >> reporter: the plane forced to make an emergency landing after a bird struck the aircraft cracking the windshield. >> birds and aircraft, you know, share the same airspace so these things are bound to happen. get your heart beating fast. >> reporter: bird strikes on aircraft are a growing problem as bird populations soar. earlier this week while landing at heathrow airport with 71 passengers, this egypt air boeing 737 damaged its nose when a flock flew into it. >> there was a huge bang, a boom sound on the left side. >> reporter: and a bird caused an engine fire on this jetblue flight from san juan to jfk. the takeoff suddenly aborted. >> flight 704 left engine. >> reporter: all 186 passengers and crew deplaning out the slide. fortunately no injuries to anyone on board that delta flight but thanks to those soaring bird populations, bird strikes are now three times more likely than they were 30 years ago. george. >> wow, i didn't know that. okay, thanks very much. there are new questions for the nba as the league's owners meet to consider moving next year's all-star game from charlotte, north carolina. calls for a boycott after a law which law and this morning, the nba's board of governors meeting here on its agenda whether or not to move the game because of this law. this morning, the nba owners are huddling up talking about potentially moving the 2017 all-star game out of the tar heel state feeling the pressure both inside and outside the league over north carolina's so-called bathroom law. >> as a black person i'm against any form of discrimination so i think the nba should move the all-star game from charlotte. >> reporter: a bipartisan group of senators writing to nba commissioner adam silver urging the organization to take a stand. commissioner silver last month calling the law deeply concerning saying he's hopeful the situation will be resolved soon. ♪ also taking a stand against the law bruce springsteen canceling his tour stop last sunday and ringo star already pulling out of his show in june. this morning the number of businesses speaking out and walking away continues to grow. most notably paypal withdrawing its plan to open a new operation center, 400 plus job, a $3.6 million investment. commissioner silver is expected to have a press conference later afternoon where he may comment on this ongoing discussion. now to amy with today's other top stories. that earthquake in japan. >> aftershocks are hampering rescue efforts after that 6.5 magnitude earthquake struck southern japan. an 8-month-old baby was pulled from the rubble from a flattened house. so far nine people are confirmed dead but that number is expected to rise. more than a thousand people have been injured. the quake derailed trains, split roads, sparked several fires cutting off power and water to thousands of people and the violent shaking lasted nearly 30 seconds forcing people to duck for cover including noel vincent a american teacher living in japan. >> suddenly we felt the floor drop beneath us. my first reaction was to protect my friends. we linked arms then we tried to stay clear of the ceiling because things had begun to fall. >> reporter: so far nearly 50,000 people have been evacuated around kumamoto. and new tensions with china this morning as defense secretary ash carter visits a u.s. aircraft carrier in the disputed south china sea. this follows the announcement that the u.s. is sending fighter jets to the philippines and boosting its alliance with that country conducting joint patrols. the move sparked a protest from beijing. a legal victory for families of the children killed in the newtown, connecticut, school shooting. a judge ruled their lawsuit against the company that made the rifle used in the attack can proceed. the judge said a law protecting gunmakers from lawsuits does not prevent the families from arguing that the semiautomatic rifle is a military weapon and should not have been sold to civilians. a young man who is a real-life superhero. 7-year-old darien hoefling has been sworn in as an honorary officer of the mount holly police department. he survived two surgeries for a brain tumor and showed such bravery every officer in the department dressed up as a superhero to honor him. he says he always has loved police officers and when he was recovering at home he made them all keychains and he has a cape himself. it says, super darien, 1, brain tumor, 0. >> way to go. >> truly a superhero. nice here in the east coast but van houten was the youngest of the manson followers convicted in the 1969 killings and now a california review board is recommending her for parole. abc's matt gutman is in los angeles with more. good morning, matt. >> reporter: good morning, robin. leslie van houten was a 19-year-old homecoming queen when she met charles manson. she's been behind bars for the last 4 1/2 decades after admitting her role in the killing of a couple here in los angeles, but this morning, she's one major step closer to freedom. overnight charles manson follower leslie van houten recommended for parole. for 46 years van houten was locked behind bars for her participation in the murders of leno and rosemary labianca and her attorney arguing that she's been a model prisoner and poses no threat to the public. >> they called her an exemplary prisoner where she helped the other inmates and earned her master's degree in the last two years. >> she's now 66 years old but in the 1960s just a teenager. a homecoming queen who sang in her church choir before she linked up with manson. >> and when you first saw him? >> i felt that i had met someone that by being around him would have a positive change. >> reporter: decades after the murder in 1994 van houten spoke with abc's diane sawyer about the night that she and several other manson followers savagely attacked and murdered the labiancas in their california home in 1969. >> and then tex turned me around and handed me the knife and he said, do something and i stabbed mrs. labianca in the lower back about 16 times. >> what kind of punishment do you deserve? what is enough? >> i don't know when enough punishment will be enough for me. >> reporter: that sentiment shared by many including the l.a. district attorney and the couple's daughter, telling abc news overnight we do not think anybody who commits the kind of crimes that she and the others did should ever be paroled. van houten's parole has been denied 19 times over the past 45 years but on thursday, she said, i don't let myself off the hook. i don't find parts of any of in that make me feel the slightest bit good about myself. the parole board said van houten hasn't had a serious rule violation in 46 years. the same can't be said of manson who is now 81 years old. he and others involved in the killings are still behind bars. but van houten's release isn't a done deal. she still has to go before the governor and another parole board who could decide to keep her in prison. robin. >> all right, matt. thank you. we'll talk to abc's chief legal analyst dan abrams about that very thing that matt was alluding to because bruce davis who was an associate with manson was denied parole even though he was recommended for parole governor brown rejected that. what are the chances he'll do that here? >> close, close case here. she's got a better argument than even bruce davis meaning she was younger, has done more in prison. taken more responsibility for what she did. so if you think that people should ever be paroled for murder and parole was part of her sentence, the possibility for parole then she's done everything right. she's got a masters degree. she hasn't had problems and helped other prisoners, everything on the list to parole someone leslie van houten can check off and, yet, as a political matter, how could it help the governor to release a manson follower? so it's a very tough situation here and i think in the end a close call for him. >> 19 times we heard in that report she's been denied and get it this time. what's the next step here? >> the next step, first of all, there is a legal review board that's first going to have to go through it. assuming that they sign off, which we expect they would it ends up on the governor's desk. one of the things the governor could do is not review it at all and just say i'm not going to take any action, as a result that means she does get parole. >> we have to remember the victims' families. >> and they feel very strongly none of them should be released. >> thank you, dan. we move on to the last-ditch effort to save johnny manziel. with the football star in a downward spiral his high-powered agent is cutting him off saying he'll reconsider if he gets treatment and, amy, it seems like everyone close to manziel is hoping tough love will work. >> they are, indeed. unfortunately, this is just the latest bad headline for him who was released by the browns last month and has since been seen partying across the country. this morning embattled quarterback johnny manziel fired by his second agent in less than three months. nfl super agent drew rosenhaus terminating his contract with the former qb this week saying he will take manziel back only if the 23-year-old enters. treatment in the next five days. >> at this point i don't have a choice because this situation is spiraling downward and i'm doing the last-ditch effort that i can think of right now to help him. i'm not going to be a part of a young man destroying his life. it's just not going to happen on my watch. >> reporter: the former heisman winner who spent ten weeks in rehab after his rookie nfl season has been seen partying and drinking in various videos like this one posted by tmz sports from february of him in a nightclub drinking from a champagne bottle and just this weekend spotted partying by tmz sports outside a hollywood nightclub. >> difference of me partying and out of control. five, six, what have we been doing since we've been out here. being cool with y'all. i'm not drunk. >> reporter: on the same night that video was taken manziel was a passenger in an alleged hit-and-run. the car being driven by his friend when it hit a light pole, the pair allegedly leaving the scene on foot. >> i'm not even concerned about his football career at this moment. i'm really concerned about his life. this is life and death related issues here. >> reporter: all this while also getting into legal hot water. manziel is currently under investigation after allegations from ex-girlfriend colleen crowley that he hit and threatened to kill her during a fight in late january. >> this is a young man that i've tried to push to get help and everyone in his family has, every friend, everyone that i know that's close to him has encouraged him, pleaded with him, begged him to do this. >> and manziel had no comment on this story. his agent says that if the former star could get control of his life, he still has a brilliant future ahead of him. >> but as you said even his family extremely concerned. >> >> well, robin, this is really a story and a study about striking that fine balance between risks and benefits. now, there are two classes of heartburn medication. one is called h2 blockers. the other is called ppi or proton pump inhibitors. that's what this study, the latest of which, was really about. it found that people taking ppis, proton pump inhibitors for a long period of time, it was associated with an increase risk of chronic kidney disease, in some cases even kidney failure. so this doesn't mean those medications can't be safe and effective, it just means awareness because over 15 million americans are on those medications, and they are available over the counter, as well as by prescription. >> and, jen, as you know, these medications have been out there for a very long time. so why are we just hearing about this now, and could it potentially cause other damage? >> well, you know, robin, i really think this is a blessing in disguise because in medicine and science, we should always be reassessing data. they have been out for a long time, and in general this class of medication is considered safe and effective. but that doesn't mean we don't always re-ask questions, look at the data and re-evaluate things. that's what medicine and science is about. now, when you talk about risks of this class of medication, there have been associated findings that show they're associated with vitamin deficiencies, a b12 deficiency, in some cases magnesium deficiency, anemia, heart attacks, bone fractures or osteoporosis, but there are benefits. they are safe and effective and when you're talking about heartbun or g.i. reflux, you're talking about something that's very, very uncomfortable. i've had it myself, and if untreated, that acid can actually cause some serious damage to the lower esophagus causing a precancerous or even cancerous condition of the esophagus, so it's about finding that balance. >> as always, so, jen, let's say you're hearing this, and you're like, you know what, i'm going to stop taking these medications. what are some things you can do when it comes to heartburn? >> well, you know, again, this is another blessing from this story is people are put on medications, i see this all the time, and then they stay on them indefinitely or forever when that might not be clinically or medically necessary. so if you're on this class of medication, even if it's over the counter, you want to talk to the doctor or the health care professional that suggested you are on it and never stop a medication without consulting that physician. >> and if you don't want to take the medication but you want to do some other things to combat heartburn?
