"your voice, your vote," donald trump and the other candidates facing new scrutiny and tough questions after that big debate. abc's jon karl starts us off. good morning, jon. >> reporter: good morning. wednesday's debate was another blockbuster, nearly 23 million viewers, but now donald trump is under fire this time not for something he said but for something he didn't say. back on the campaign trail in new hampshire, donald trump was feeling the heat. >> this room is hot. the air-conditioning was not designed for this many people. >> reporter: but while taking questions from a packed audience of die-hard supporters, trump may have stepped into a firestorm. >> -- problem in this country. it's called muslims. we know our current president is one. you know he's not even an american. >> the birth certificate question -- >> but anyway, we have training camps growing where they want to kill us. that's my question. when can we get rid of them? >> reporter: he let that slide. >> we'll be looking at a lot of different things and a lot of people are saying and a lot of people are saying that bad things are happening out there. we'll be looking at that and plenty of other things. >> reporter: hillary clinton was quick to pounce tweeting donald trump not denouncing false statements about the president and hateful rhetoric about muslims is disturbing and just plain wrong, cut it out. meanwhile, the gop front-runner took more shots at carly fiorina, the breakout star from wednesday night's debate. >> you know what a leader does, they challenge the status quo, they solve problems that have festered for a long time. >> reporter: trump says he wasn't impressed. >> everyone said she made a good speech yesterday. i don't get it. i don't get it. >> reporter: trump also stirred new controversy at the end of wednesday's debate by linking childhood vaccines to autism. >> and we've had so many instances, people that work for me just the other day, 2 years old, 2 1/2 years old, a beautiful child went to have the vaccine and came back a week later got a tremendous fever, got very, very sick, now is autistic. >> the american academy of pediatrics says links to autism are false and quote it is dangerous to the public health to suggest otherwise, as for trump's reaction to the comments about muslims and the president. they say trump was reacting to what the questioner said about terrorist training camps not comments on the president or muslims. >> right. he was answering the question about training camps. let's get into this now. 23 million people watched that second debate. how has the race changed? >> fascinating, one, we know the enthusiasm of people involved out in the country want to take turns in this. the newest twist and turn is the carly and donald show but a race between carly fiorina and donald trump and the vetting of each other business's record in the course of this. i think this is an interesting time for donald trump. he's never faced a public battle with a woman like this before, unless divorce papers were involved, that he's had to deal with somebody that's confronting him on a number of issues. >> right, so both he and carly will face more questions about their record. the other candidates just trying to stay in the game at this point. >> yeah, i think everyone now -- the donald aura had overcome everybody and now carly has risen to a point because of her performance the battle is between the two of them. >> matt dowd, thanks very much. all right, george. now we'll turn to those wildfires out west. firefighters gaining the upper hand on those deadly fires that tore through northern california this week. but the danger increasing again this weekend. strong winds are moving in. rob is in for ginger and has all that. >> 35% containment so haven't gained much. the video from this week. we did have rain higher levels of humidity helped the firefighting containment but through the next few days, higher winds and more in the way of dry weather so watching this the next 24 to 48 hours. also watching the severe weather threat today across the midwest, this line from ponca city through kansas city almost to chicago. maybe some thunderstorms that could produce tornadoes here. also some heavy rain with this. a third round of storms rolling through chicago. flood watches and we'll talk more about that in the next few minutes. >> thank you. "your money" and the big decision from the federal reserve to keep interest rates at record lows. wall street sends stocks falling after getting the news. rebecca jarvis here to break it all down. good morning, rebecca. >> reporter: good morning. we can expect more volatility in stocks as a result of that decision since their all-time high, the dow is down 1,000 points but this is good news for anyone planning to make a big purchase using a loan, a new car, a new house, expanding your business, what the fed has done by holding interest rates at zero percent for the last six years they've made borrowing the cheapest that it has ever been in history. so why are they doing this? they're trying to stimulate the economy. they're worried about the recent slowdown that we have seen overseas, specifically in china. and they're also concerned about wages. here in the united states, not rising. by keeping them at 0% their goal is to encourage american consumers to go out and spend because our spending, what we do with our money is the lifeblood of this economy. 70% of our economic growth right here in the united states comes from our spending, george. the whole idea here, they give us free money from interest rates being as low as they are. we go out and spend that money and that stimulates the economy. that's their objective. >> okay, rebecca, thanks very much. now to a new arrest in the charleston church murders that left nine people dead. the fbi taking a friend of dylann roof into custody who gave the shooter a place to live in the weeks before the tragedy. abc's pierre thomas joins us with the latest. good morning, pierre. >> reporter: good morning, robin. the question today, could lives in the charleston church massacre have been saved. dylann roof's roommate facing allegations of keeping a terrible secret. joseph meeks seen here in an abc news interview done the day after his roommate allegedly gunned down nine african-americans in a charleston church now accused of knowing the attack was coming but not informing authorities. >> he said that he thought that the black -- the black in general as a race was bringing down the white race. >> reporter: the fbi arresting meek thursday and sources say he's also being charged with misleading federal investigators in interviews in the hours after the murders. >> he told me these things and i just -- i tried to talk him out of it and i'd always try to fight against it. >> reporter: meek insisted to the media he never believed roof would actually harm anyone. >> did you know he had a weapon? >> yeah, i did. he never told me he would do something like this. >> reporter: the fbi did not believe him. in august meek got a letter from federal prosecutors saying he was the target of an investigation and he told reporters, "i'm stilling reaping what he sowed. i'm looked at like a criminal because of his actions." meek who is in jail is expected in court now faces questions about his character and allegations that his silence had lethal consequences. george. >> we'll get the latest on bowe bergdahl, the soldier who walked off his base in afghanistan held captive by the taliban for five years back in a military courtroom today facing possible life in prison for charges that he put his fellow soldiers at risk. abc's martha raddatz is tracking the case from washington. good morning, martha. >> reporter: good morning, george. for the first time we're hearing incredible detail about what happened after bowe bergdahl walked away from his outpost in afghanistan and was captured by the taliban. bowe bergdahl's release 18 months ago after five brutal years in captivity brought tears of relief for bergdahl as he was told he was headed home. but it brought controversy, as well. in a military courtroom thursday where bergdahl faces charges of desertion and endangering the lives of his fellow soldiers, those who served with him in afghanistan talked to the desperate, dangerous search launched after bergdahl disappeared from his outpost in 2009. the prosecutor saying thousands of soldiers toiled in the heat and misery combing the mountains of eastern afghanistan for 45 days. in emotional testimony clinton baker said it was overwhelming. helicopters shot at. soldiers injured by ieds, vehicles destroyed. there was someone trying to kill them the whole time. it was gut wrenching said another. bergdahl's platoon leader, john billings said for the first time in my career i had lost a soldier. i felt almost as if i had failed my men." the majority of those looking for bergdahl having no idea at the time he had walked away from the outpost on his own. bergdahl's attorney has said he was not trying to desert, he was just trying to report disturbing activities in his unit. bergdahl's attorneys seem to be making a case he never should have been allowed in the army saying he had to be given a waiver to even join because of what they called a severe mental disease. robin. >> martha, thank you. now to the hockey superstar under investigation for sexual assault. chicago blackhawks star patrick kane is speaking out about the allegation for the first time as he returns to the ice this morning to begin preparing for a new nhl season. abc's ryan smith is here with that story. good morning, ryan. >> reporter: good morning to you, robin. he is one of hockey's most celebrated superstars known for goal scoring and gracing magazine covers often but responding to accusations he sexually assaulted a woman in august, the nhl star saying "i will be absolved." this morning, chicago blackhawks superstar patrick kane professing his innocence. >> i am confident that once all of the facts are brought to light, i will be absolved of having done nothing wrong. >> reporter: speaking out for the first time since sexual assault accusations shocked the hockey world, the three-time stanley cup winner issuing this mea culpa for the distraction. >> i cannot apologize enough for the distraction this has caused my family, my teammates, this incredible organization and, of course, our fans. >> reporter: according to "the buffalo news" a young woman claiming she met him at a local nightclub returning to his waterfront home where he allegedly assaulted her. police reportedly collecting evidence from kane's home saying in august -- >> at this time we are gathering information and awaiting forensic testing results. >> reporter: kane hasn't been charged with any crime and as the blackhawks training camp begins today his team opting to keep him in the fold. >> we have decided to have patrick join us for training camp. >> reporter: the nhl agreeing saying in a statement "we support the club's decision in this situation. "but since the scandal broke the star, one of the league's most talented scorers earning over 10 million a year has been under fire. ea sports putting him on ice dropping him from the cover of ea sports nhl '16 and while he's happy be to back in the game. >> i'm excited to be back at camp. >> reporter: the scandal and allegations continue to loom large. >> this has been an incredibly difficult time for many people. >> reporter: the blackhawks did say they would re-evaluate his status with the team if he was indicted of any charges. a grand jury hearing was recently postponed to take place later this month, robin. amy with the top stories including new chaos in the refugee crisis overwhelming europe. >> there are desperate scenes, robin, out there playing out as thousands seeking a better life in western europe face a new hurdle. overnight croatia closed all but one of its border crossings blocking the main route they were using after hungary closed its borders. the result, a crush of people desperately waiting to board bus and trains. 11,000 refugees and migrants have flooded into croatia since wednesday. the army is on alert in case things get even more out of control, but what a scene playing out there in europe. also breaking overnight the taliban launching a brazen attack on a military base in northwest pakistan. at least 18 people were killed. many were praying inside a mosque. this is the largest taliban assault on military personnel this year. well, pope francis has addressed the people of cuba ahead of his arrival there tomorrow. in his unprecedented message on cuban tv, the pope said jesus would never abandon the cuban people, the vatican says it hopes the papal visit will help bring an end to the u.s. trade embargo and the pope arrives in washington on tuesday. and back here in this country a new deal to build a high-speed train connecting los angeles and las vegas. china's biggest trainmaker is joining forces with an american company to build it. a trip that takes four hours by car normally will take an hour and 20 minutes and construction could start as early as next september. an unusual scene at a condo complex in tennessee. take a look at this, a bear scaling the building, making its way all the way up to the third floor balcony then stop on the second floor on the way down. it's believed the bear may have smelled garbage on one of the balconies before eventually roaming back into the woods. encouraging news about a major league pitcher hit in the head by a line drive. the video is very difficult to watch. the brewers' jimmy nelson suffering a direct hit. the amazing news, he walked off the field on his own and then later tweeted from the hospital that he is, quote, feeling good. and finally some people are feeling good in denver. it's being called stunning, epic, ridiculous but bronco fans are simply calling it a win. with only 40 seconds left, the broncos trailing the chiefs by 7 points last night then peyton manning throws a touchdown so that's not that unbelievable but keep watching because the chiefs get the ball back and on the next play they fumble. the broncos recover, take it all the way to in just 30 seconds. now to that little boy and now to that little boy and the school bus driver who jumped into action when the bus crashed into a lake. abc's linsey davis has the story. >> reporter: this morning, a 10-year-old and his bus driver are being hailed as heroes after this school bus carrying elementary school students crashed then careened into this lake outside tampa thursday afternoon. >> i seen him stepping on the brakes but the brakes weren't working and everyone started screaming. >> reporter: the bus taking down a sign post and part of a tree before flipping on its side in the water. >> he said, hold on tight and figured out what he was trying to say when it was bumping like crazy but it was too late. literally it was too fast. couldn't grab on. >> reporter: parents and first responders rushing to the scene but all 27 students and the driver managed to escape through the rear emergency door, all making it out uninjured thanks in part to one young boy on board. springing into action. >> i grabbed a kindergartener's arms and i put her around my neck and i dragged her to land and then i went back. >> reporter: witnesses also calling the bus driver a hero saying the 64-year-old man stayed on the bus until every child got out safely. investigators now working to determine the exact cause of the crash. the driver says he believes the brakes failed. >> i didn't -- i don't -- i can't explain. >> you can't explain. you just weren't thinking? >> i was doing what i was told. >> doing what you were told. >> yes, sir. >> by whom? >> well, a player had came over and told me that the coach -- >> the coach told you to do it. >> yes, sir. >> and michael. >> when it was happening i just realized the gravity of the situation, you know like this was actually happening and like i couldn't fully go through with it so like at the end i pulled up a lot like knowing what's actually like going on and it was just -- it was hard for me, you know, during the whole thing just to actually do what i did and, you know, to this day i regret it. it's one of my biggest regrets and it's been affecting my life greatly now. >> victor said your coach told you to do it. >> yes, that's correct. >> what did he say? >> well, before, you know, i had got put into the game the previous safety that was in, he had got injured and while on the sideline he pulled me and another player over and he told us and i quote, you need to hit him. >> another player said this. >> no, no, the coach. >> the coach. >> he pulled me and another player and told us you need to hit the ref. he needs to pay the price? for what? >> just for everything that's been going on in the game. there was racial slurs being thrown at, you know, players, from this referee. there was, you know, unjustified calls. you know, it was just a lot going on and i guess his emotions got, you know, mixed into it and he told us to do what we did. >> a lot of people would say, boy, the coach told you to do that but you knew it was wrong, right? >> you put your trust into this, you know, grown-up, a guardian, your coach who's been there since for me since my sophomore/freshman year and, you know, i trusted him. you know that he wants the best for me and i just do -- did what i was told. >> the referee as you know has said he didn't use any racial slurs. did you hear the referee use any racial slurs. >> yes, sir, he told one of my hispanic friends, he told him speak english, this is america. >> did you hear that or one of your friends -- >> no, i heard it and then to an african-american on our team he told then the "n" word. >> you heard him. >> yes, sir. >> did you? >> yes, i heard him when he called him moses reynolds, the "n" word. >> he says that's a lie. >> that's not. it's the honest truth right there and i wouldn't lie about this situation like just how bad it's gotten like the truth needs to be told. >> what do you think should happen now? >> you can't just do that because it's something you were told. but, you know, and i'm ready to face my consequences, i just ask that i am greatly sorry for this and i regret it greatly and i just hope that people can change their minds about us and that, you know, line up our consequences. >> up until this moment you had a pretty good record in school. in the honor society. >> yes, sir. >> what more do you want people to know about you and what happened? >> well, this -- everyone sees me as this thug, you know, or gangster, you know, i did this because i'm a bad guy like that's not who i am. underneath the helmet and the pads i'm really a great kid like, you know, school is my first priority. you know, i am aspiring to become an aerospace engineer. >> and if you could speak with the referee, robert watts right now, what would you say to him? >> i would apologize for the mistake that i made. >> the boys now are still under investigation. >> both from the school district and maybe even a possible criminal investigation. where does it stand right now? >> right now everything is still up in the air. the county attorney has not yet decided what type of charges if any are going to be filed. the school district is still waiting to have our hearing but they also have the discretion to let these boys go back to school. and that's what we think is best. >> michael said he wants to pay the right consequences. what do you think is the appropriate punishment. >> i think they paid the appropriate punishment already. they have suffered three days of suspension, they've been in alternative school for a week. they're excluded from playing football for the rest of the season. i think that's enough. they've apologized. they're sorry. they didn't mean to do this. i think they've been punished fairly enough. >> and if you could take back that moment? over that funding. and today the white house is expected to announce new rules to weaken the u.s. embargo on cuba. this comes just a day before the pope arrives in havana. the new rules are expected to allow some american companies to open in cuba and make it easier for cruise ships to travel to that island. well, a big scare on board a flight from hawaii to the philippine, 15 people injured when a philippines airlines flight hit turbulence. one passenger saying she thought she was going to die, but thankfully the injuries are described as minor. and the marine corps is reportedly trying to >> because i talk about the flaws that society has set for women. i've got curves, i've got cellulite. i've got things that jiggle that shouldn't jiggle apparently and i'm not afraid to talk about it and not afraid to showcase it on the runway live in action and i really want women to know you're included. we're talking about -- we're talking about the everyday woman, not the idea of what a woman should look like. >> and we keep hearing that more and more. we've had melissa mccarthy on the show and she has a new line out and one thing she's trying to push, ashley, for the department stores to put all the clothes on the same rack. >> together, why not. i think the word plus size is dividing what women think of each other. and i think if we just got rid of that label and we just said, look, you're a woman and we're not going to describe you because of the number in your pants, at the end of the day we can all just be equal. >> have you seen that there's a movement for that? >> no, no. >> but fashion is a passion for beckham. the soccer star and his posh wife run the hugely successful victoria beckham fashion line. what's it like being -- as a business partner with your wife? >> it's pretty easy actually. we've been together for 18 years. we have been married for 16 years so you trust each other's judgment and i think that that has worked for us. my wife, you know, she's a hard worker. her dedication to what she does is incredible. >> reporter: and both are fiercely dedicated to their children. it must be hard parenting in the public spotlight. >> yeah. >> all the scrutiny that you get all the time. >> it is. but, you know, we protect our kids from that. >> they have their social media campaigns. how do you balance all that? >> it's hard because our 16-year-old brooklyn has like 4 million instagram followers. we control everything he posts. everything that he does and it's the same with our other kids. >> what are the beckham house rules. >> i'm not so good at the rules with the kids especially with my little girl. my wife is definitely the strict, strict one in the house. just the other day my daughter actually was in the kitchen and she turned around to my wife and was like can i have another ice cream and my wife was like no, you had one ice cream so she swivelled around and said, daddy, i love you so much, can i have another ice cream?
