and the drenching rain causing a landslide. putting these homes on the edge of disaster. and first on "gma." bruce jenner's brand new revelation. >> it's going to be an emotional roller coaster. >> the olympic champion on his worry, his future and his future. details many are waiting to see only here this morning. >> good morning, america. . let's get to the breaking news for all of you on the west coast. the white house announcing two innocent hostages were killed in operations back in january including an american right there. he's been held in pakistan and afghanistan since 2011. let's go to london for all the details. >> reporter: yeah george this story breaking just now, we're getting some of the details through about this kind of terrorism operation. talking about the border region between afghanistan and pakistan. the focus of so much of the american and coalition efforts over the past decade. two separate incidents that the white house is referring to. but the first of those incidents took place in january and it's in this incident that the two innocent hoss stajs were killed. one of them is dr. weinstein and the other one is an italian national held by al qaeda and clearly this poses all sorts of complicated legal ramifications. given that in any circumstance the u.s. must seek special legal permission in order to conduct a strike or countrier terrorism operation that might result in the death of an american. in this particular incident they're saying the white house is saying they did not know these individuals were there. >> and we also know in that same operation, the americans also did kill an american member of al qaeda and they have announced in a separate counter terrorism operation another american had joined al qaeda had also been killed. >> reporter: yeah. exactly. in this incident exactly the same legal questions are raised. of course the white house would normally need to seek special legal permission to conduct a strike or counter terrorism operation, targeting american citizens. that didn't occur. but in both of these incidents we're hearing that they did not know the americans were inside the compounds they were targeting. >> thanks were ear standing by for the president. including the mist on a flight from chicago to connecticut. three people pass out in mid flight. several complain of feeling sick. the pilot makes an emergency landing in buffalo. >> reporter: this one is a mystery this morning. what caused these three people to lose consciousness. the airline is claiming it's not what you might suspect. just 40 minutes in, the nearly 80 passengers aboard the united express jet realize something is not right. >> you could feel something in the air. something just wasn't right. >> reporter: a passenger begins to lose consciousness. mary cunningham a registered nurse gets up to help. >> she was gray. her color looked awful. i asked for oxygen for her. we got her on oxygen. as soon as she got on oxygen, she was alert. came right back. and then, i went back to my seat after she was feeling better. they called me right back because the person right behind her passed out. >> reporter: then mary herself starts to feel faint. >> i didn't feel great myself. the flight attendant, same thing. everybody in the middle of the flight starts to not feel well. >> reporter: three people in all lose consciousness. the pilot acts. the plane begins a descent. 27,000 feet in just eight minutes. >> it felt like it nose-dived. the airframe is shaking. we descended quickly. >> reporter: the pilot feared a cabin pressure problem and followed procedure, dropping the plane to get to breathable air. then an emergency landing in buffalo. >> it's going to be gate number four. inbound flight, unknown medical problem. >> reporter: overnight, the airline says there was no pressure problem and no problem with the plane's equipment. no cockpit warnings. and the fact that no oxygen masks dropped. according to the airline, the pilot made an unscheduled landing in buffalo, new york, in response to a passenger losing consciousness while en route. passengers say they don't believe the airline's explanation. >> it wasn't a medical issue. it was multiple people affected. >> the mystery and the plane remain in buffalo this morning while the airline and the faa try to sort out what happened. more confusing, the airline originally said only one person lost consciousness. overnight, they said three. all three were checked out. and released. it's kind of a strange one, george. >> it is. let's try to work through it with john nance. you have the faa saying the pilot was responding to a pressure problem. the airline denying that. explain what happened here. >> i think the thing that's most consistent, george, is we probably had a cabin climbing 10,000 to 11,000 feet. it did not set off the alarms. not dropped the oxygen masks. that happens about 12,000 feet. 10,000 feet is enough to get people passing out. it's rarified atmosphere. >> not one but three people. at 10,000 feet. it seems like the pilot did what he had to do in this moment. >> that's right. when you think you have a pressurization problem, whether it's showing on the gauge or not, you get the plane down lower. when you're up at 37,000 feet, the cabin may be riding at about 6,000 feet normally. something was not right here. >> okay, john nance, thank you very much. that wasn't the only scare for passengers on wednesday. a flight from paris to newark experienced extreme turbulence. eventually landing in boston after failed attempts in newark and new york's jfk. several passengers fell ill. two were hospitalized after the plane flew through a violent line of storms. ginger you're tracking this weather for us. >> that line of storms had 70-plus miles per hour winds in it. there was enough lift and twist. this is a tree down in new jersey onto a house. we saw lots of damage. the wind reports that went all the way from parts to new york down into the mid-atlantic also expanded along the cold front back into texas. look at this picture of a land spout. this is taken from a tractor. you can see from the two angles. yesterday we were saying they're different from tornadoes. they can still be damaging. this one from texas tells you, the storm has the effect that it can actually do this again today. from wichita falls down to austin, to laredo. also, a little pocket in new orleans. watch out for large hail, damaging winds, isolated tornadoes. we're clear on the east coast. we had snow in parts of new york. i'll show you that coming up. >> clear now, ginger. the weather created a frightening situation for some new jersey families. heavy rain causing a landslide. their homes falling 70 feet into the delaware river. that is a live look at the scene, thanks to our station wpvi in philadelphia. rob marciano is in florence, new jersey, right now. good morning, rob. >> reporter: good morning. the storms that rolled through here made the situation worse last night. winds gusting to 61 miles an hour. it's the rainfall causing the problem. another live look from above shows you how dramatic it is. along the delaware river. and how heartbreaking it is this morning. it is a massive hole. threatening to swallow new jersey homes. forcing owners to evacuate. >> this is our home. we put a lot of effort into it. i put a lot of love in this house. >> reporter: chris and lynn o'dell said they knew there has been erosion in their backyard for a long time. but recent rains opened up this 70-feet-deep ravine. right in their backyard. >> all i can see is that it's unsafe. >> reporter: the ravine claiming trees, fences, even this birdhouse. both the o'dells and their neighbor told to leave. >> i don't think he could define staying within hours. it could be days. when lives are at stake, you don't take chances. >> reporter: eraegs -- erosion causing more trouble. earlier this month erosion claiming the deck of this woman's home. she was forced to evacuate. >> this used to go way out at least another 50 feet. >> reporter: landslides push this house into the middle of the street in western washington. meanwhile, the o'dells coming to terms. that their dream home has become a real life nightmare. >> when we walk away, we could be walking away for good. losing everything. >> my grandkids love it here. all the pictures. it's -- it's a lot. >> it's overwhelming. >> it's overwhelming. >> reporter: they have lived in this home for over ten years. that shot from above as the sun comes up shows you that huge sinkhole. the latest wave revealing what could be the problem. an old storm drainage pipe has been leaking. every time it rains, it eats away at the land even more. even though we have discovered it, it may be too late to save the homes. >> you can see that. >> such a dramatic scene there. >> the latest now on the sentencing of the boston marathon bomber. jurors were shown new video of dzhokhar tsarnaev in a jail cell before making that obscene gesture to the camera. ron claiborne joins us now. good morning, ron. >> breaks news rightnow. let's pause so the rest of the country can join us. >> announcer: this is an abc news special report. >> and we are coming on the air right now because president obama about to come into the white house briefing room to announce that two american hostages -- two hostages had been killed in an american counter terror operation back in january on the border of afghanistan and pakistan including one american dr. warren weinstein. in the same operation an american who had joined al qaeda amed furuk was killed and another american who had joined al qaeda had also been killed. the president needed to classify this this morning. i want to go for more details to jon karl on the phone. >> reporter: in a very strong statement from the press secretary says the president takes full responsibility for these operations. he says the tragic nature results in the death of the hostages is something we do is not repeated. very heavy statement from the white house on this. i'm sure that's the tone. you'll hear reflected from the president. they say when this operation was conducted they had no information that these hostages were -- >> here comes the president now. >> this morning i want to express our grief and condolences to the families of two hostages. one american dr. warren weinstein and an italian giovanni laporto who were killed in a u.s. counter terrorism operation. warren and giovanni were aide workers in pakistan devoted to improving the lives of the pakistani people. after warren was abducted by al qaeda in 2011 i directed my national security team to do everything possible to find him and bring him home safely to his family and dedicated professionals worked tirelessly to do so and worked closely with our italian allies on behalf of giovanni who was kidnapped in 2012. since 9/11 our efforts have prevented terrorist attacks and saved innocent lives both here in america and around the world. and that determination to protect innocent life only makes the loss of these two men especially painful for all of us. based on information and intelligence we have obtained we believe that a u.s. counter terrorism operation targeting an al qaeda compound in the afghanistan/pakistan border region accidentally killed warren and giovanni this past january. yesterday i spoke with warren's wife elaine and prime minister renzi of italy. as a husband and as a father i cannot begin to imagine the anguish that the weinstein and laporto families are enduring today. there are no words that can ever equal their loss. i know that there is nothing that i can ever say or do to ease their heartache and today i simply want to say this. as president and as commander in chief i take full responsibility for all of counter terrorism operations including the one that inadvertently took the lives of warren and giovanni. i profoundly regret what happened. on behalf of the united states government i offer our deepest apologies to the families. as soon as we determine the cause of their deaths. i direct that the existence of this operation be declassified and disclosed publically. i did so because the weinstein and laporto families deserve to know the truth and i did so because even as certain aspects of our national security efforts have to remain secret in order to succeed, the united states is a democracy committed to openness in good times and in bad. our initial assessment indicates that this operation was fully consistent with the guidelines under which we conduct counter terrorism efforts in the region which has been our focus for years because it is the home of al qaeda's leadership. and based on the intelligence that we had obtained at the time. including hundreds of hours of surveillance. we believed that this was an al qaeda compound. that no civil yans were present and that capturing these terrorists was not possible. and we do believe that the operation did take out dangerous members of al qaeda. what we did not know tragically is that al qaeda was hiding the presence of warren and giovanni in this same compound. it is a cruel and bitter truth that in the fog of war generally and our fight against terrorists specifically mistakes sometimes deadly mistakes can occur. but one of the things that sets america apart from many other nations, one of the things that makes us exceptional is our willingness to con front our imperfections and learn from our mistakes. already i have directed a full review of what happened. we will identify the lessons that can be learned from this tragedy and any changes that should be made. we will do our utmost to ensure it is not repeated. and we will continue to do everything we can to prevent the loss of innocent lives, not just innocent americans but all innocent lives in our counter terrorism operations. today we join their families and friends in honoring warren and giovanni. two humanitarians who came from different countries but who were united by a spirit of service. for decades warren lived the ideals of our country serving with the peace corp and devoted his life to people across africa and south asia and was a loving husband, father and grandfather who willingly left the comforts of home to help the people of pakistan. at the time of his abduction he was a usa id contractor focusing on helping families escape poverty and give a better life to their children. giovanni giovanni's humanitarianism took him around the world to the central american public haiti and pakistan. he fell in love with pakistan and its people and believed that he could make a difference in their lives. giovanni's service reflected the commitment of the italian people our great allies and friends to the security and dignity of people around the world. and today is a reminder of the bonds of friendship between our countries and the shared values that behind americans and italians together. there could be no starker contrast between these two selfless men and their al qaeda captors. warren's work benefitted people across faiths. meanwhile, al qaeda boasted to the world it held warren citing his jewish faith. al qaeda held both men for years even as warren's health deteriorated and deprived these men of precious irreplaceable years with family who miss them terribly. i'm at grief that is unimaginable and pray these families will find some small measure of sol has knowing their legacy will endure and be remembered by the pakistani men, women and children whose lives they touched and made better. their spirit will live on in the love of their families who are in our thoughts and prayers today, especially warren's wife elaine their daughters, alicia and jennifer and their families. and the shining example of these two men will stand as a light to people the world over who see suffering and answer with compassion who see hatred and offer their love who see war and work for peace. may god bless these two brave men and may he watch over and comfort their families for all the years to come. >> president obama in the white house briefing room taking full responsibility for the u.s. counter terror operation back in january resulting in the deaths of two innocent hostages including one american dwr warren weinstein, an italian and the president saying he regrets these deaths and offering his apologies. he said it's a cruel a nd and bitter truth. mistakes are made and sometimes can be deadly. it's up to the united states to confront them squarely and learn from them. close with the words, god bless these men, god bless america. we're going to have more on
