popular cerealmaker to court. we do say good morning, america, on this friday morning. and he is certainly a legendary action star. harrison ford as indiana jones, han solo and, oh, quite a scare for him landing on that golf course. >> experienced pilot. not his first crash, actually. this morning he's recovering in the hospital. the injuries not life-threatening. abc's nick watt starts us off from the scene of the accident. good morning, nick. >> reporter: good morning, george. well behind me that is what's left of harrison ford oes vintage airplane on a golf course here in west los angeles. ford, who recently wrapped filming on "star wars: episode 7" was indulging his other great passion in life, flight, when disaster struck at quarter after 2:00 in the afternoon. >> i hope he's going to make it. >> reporter: watch this small plane. harrison ford at the controls clipping trees in the distance before it goes down caught on video by a stunned onlooker. >> oh, no. >> come on, dude. come on. >> oh, no. >> reporter: just seconds after takeoff, the engine failing, listen to ford's voice as he radios the tower for help. >> 53-178, engine failure, immediate return. >> ryan 178, runway 2, 1 -- clear to land. >> i have to go to 3. >> runway 3 clear to land. >> reporter: but he can't make it. >> it looked like it was short of the runway. >> reporter: crash landing on a golf course fairway, a spinal surgeon rushed to the downed world war ii era plane. >> he's obviously an iconic individual and when he laid there as i was just trying to check his airway and his blood pressure it was obvious by his face that it was harrison ford. >> reporter: he's conscious, breathing. >> i stabilized his neck which is a common area of injury. he was, you know, obviously moaning and in pain. and my task, if you will, was to get him out of the airplane in a semi-urgent manner because the fuel was leaking. >> reporter: paramedics quickly on the scene strapping the 72-year-old movie star to a gurney. >> fly, yes. land, no. >> reporter: unlike his character indiana jones ford is an experienced pilot. he owns eight aircraft. he's been flying since the '60s. >> it's an airplane as old as harrison ford is. when airplanes or engines are that old they do have a tendency to fail. >> reporter: ford's son ben tweeting from the hospital last night, dad is okay, battered, but okay. he is every bit the man you would think he is. he is an incredibly strong man. the ntsb is still trying to figure out exactly what went wrong here. no fire. that could be a clue. it could have been a lot worse about 200 feet from ford's plane, that's a house right there. this is a heavily residential area. the fairway was by far the safest place for ford to land. ford is known for doing his own stunts. this iconic scene from "raiders of the loss ark" is actually him outrunning that boulder. ford's as stuff off-screen as he appears on it and abc's chris connelly is in los angeles with more on that side of the story. good morning, chris. >> reporter: good morning, robin. in the movies this action hero has known all manner of misadventure on a wide assortment of airships and, as a real-life pilot, harrison ford has had his share of action and heroism. for almost 40 years harrison ford's adventures in the air have thrilled movie audiences. in "star wars" -- >> kid, i've flown from one side of this galaxy to the other and i've seen a lot of strange stuff. >> reporter: "indiana jones and the last crusade." >> hang on, we're going in. >> reporter: and "air force one." >> get off my plane. >> reporter: that larger than life adventure-seeking persona as true off screen as it is on. >> another pilot, another airplane. not a movie actor. >> reporter: ford's real-life love of the skies well documented and he's been responsible for high-flying acts of heroism piloting his chopper to rescue a stranded hiker in wyoming in 2000 and helping find a missing boy scout in yellowstone national park in 2001, but over the years he's gotten into his share of scrapes. last june during the shooting of "star wars episode 7: the force awakens," ford broke his left leg and needed surgery after an on-set accident. the film is produced by disney, the parent company of abc news. and he's already survived several midair mishaps. wind gusts blowing his six-seater off a nebraska runway in 2000. and in 1999, crash landing of a copter in california's ventura county. yet his love of flying has endured as he told barbara walters in 2008. >> what does flying give you? >> oh, man, a lot. i love the freedom of flight. i love the places you go. i love seeing the world from an airplane. i'm in love with flying. >> reporter: and this morning, the many millions who have loved ford's on-screen daring-do are giving thanks he's expected to make a full recovery and can take back to the skies on screen and off. >> nice landing. >> thanks. >> reporter: also back in 2008 he told abc news that what he'd seen from the air had kick-started his activism on behalf of the environment. so a big part of his life flying, robin. >> yeah, he is extremely passionate about aviation. okay, chris, thank you. we're going to bring in abc news aviation consultant colonel steve ganyard. who joins us from d.c. we've been talking about his passion for flying. and also his professionalism because, as nick watt said, that's a highly populated area where he was able to bring that plane down there on the golf course. >> it is, robin. you know, he's a pilot's pilot. i think it's one of the reasons why pilots like him so much. because he loves flying. he has the love of flying in his blood and so he takes flying professionally. he does what it takes, is not just a weekend jump in an airplane, and he does everything he needs to be to be a professional pilot. >> no, he's far from being a weekend warrior. can you tell us more about the vintage plane he was flying in? >> yeah, it's actually a world war ii trainer, so it's quite old, 1942 is when this airplane was built. so you think about what happened yesterday. he takes off and a minute and a half after takeoff looking at santa monica bay, a bright sunny day, the engine just stops. he gets the airplane turned around. and he says, can i make it back? can i glide back into the airport? he makes the determination he's not going to get that far and so he's going to have to land short and he sees the fairway and the golf course and he makes a very skillful landing on what could have been disastrous with so many buildings nearby. >> and we're so thankful that he appears to be going to make a full recovery. steve, thank you very much. >> okay, thanks, robin. we're going to turn now to the deep freeze. bitter cold hitting the eastern half of the country this morning. temperatures dropping to 30 degrees below average and it's creating icy driving conditions all over. abc's alex perez is in louisville, kentucky, with the latest. good morning, alex. >> reporter: good morning, george. they are digging out from all that snow that fell here but the bitter cold is only complicating things. icy roads causing chaos across the country. >> it's so bad, you're all over the place. >> reporter: drivers losing control. in st. louis this car slamming into a barrier after hitting a patch of ice. watch as this car comes barreling down the street in rhode island and hits this woman. you can see her trying to get out of the way, fortunately she's okay. in dobbs ferry, new york, a bus swerves to miss one car and hits two others and then a house. numerous cars and trucks sliding and wrecking off the road. this snowplow ending up on its side. outside birmingham, a 14-car pileup and on i-65 south of louisville -- >> nobody is happy. >> reporter: -- some drivers stranded for more than 16 hours after more than two feet of snow fell. in some areas. traffic backed up for 20 miles. this woman and her toddler spent the night in their car. >> thankfully the truck driver ahead of us brought us water so we could make bottles. >> reporter: the national guard is stepping in to help bringing food and water to those out in the cold. teamwork in dallas, this big rig stuck in the snow blocking traffic but watch as five drivers come together and pull the semi back on to the road. and because of the bitter temperatures, icy roads will remain a big concern for the morning commute today and most of the day in the midwest. robin. >> all right, alex. thank you. now to the trial of that boston marathon bomber and an emotional day of testimony as victims including a father who lost his 8-year-old son took the stand. abc's brian ross has that story for us. >> reporter: the jury saw this video and then heard from the woman seen here who lost her leg after the bomb blast. but 27-year-old rebekah gregory of houston says tsarnaev would not look her in the eye. >> i see a coward. i just don't think that he can face what he did. either that or he doesn't care. >> reporter: the jury also heard from this boston police officer who rescued a 3-year-old boy from a man who lost both legs carried off by a stranger in a cowboy hat, and from bill richard, whose family watched the marathon just steps from tsarnaev and the backpack bomb. his 8-year-old son martin was killed. his 7-year-old daughter jane lost her leg. rebekah gregory went through some 40 surgeries but in the end felt testifying here helped her get past what happened. saying that tsarnaev had been a constant presence in her nightmares until she was able to stare him down from the witness stand. >> he really was somebody i was afraid of, yeah. in a lot of ways. >> reporter: and now? >> and now i have kind of taken that back and i don't have that fear anymore because i looked at what tried to destroy me and i've come out stronger because of it. >> reporter: the courtroom is packed every day with victims while others watch on closed circuit tv in a private room. for some, the emotions are just too powerful and raw and others say they can't stand to be in the same room with dzhokhar tsarnaev. george. >> you can feel it here. okay, thanks very much. we're going to turn to politics now, more fallout for hillary clinton over her use of a private e-mail account as secretary of state. and the first visit to iowa for jeb bush as he revs up his bid for the republican nomination. abc's jon karl tracking both. this private e-mail account for hillary clinton appears to be at odds with the state department's own rules even though it's not illegal. >> reporter: that's right, george. the state department is now reviewing whether or not mrs. clinton violated a 2005 rule that was put in place to protect critical national security and diplomatic information. this rule said that employees are not allowed to send information, it is known as sensitive but unclassified, on private e-mail. that is not allowed except under emergency circumstances so they're going through her e-mails to see if she did any of that. that could potentially put at risk those e-mails falling into the wrong hands. also, george, she was in clear violation of a rule that said that if employees use private e-mail, they must turn the e-mail over to the state department to be entered into government computers. as you know, she didn't turn over e-mails until nearly two years after she left office. >> investigations by at least two congressional committees at the same time, jeb bush heading to iowa for the first time. there's also been some scrutiny of his personal e-mail accounts and he's got an uphill fight in iowa. >> reporter: the iowa caucuses have been dominated by the conservative wing of the republican party. this is the wing of the republican party that is most skeptical of jeb bush. early polls in iowa show that he's already well behind scott walker, the governor of wisconsin, another likely candidate, so this will be potentially skeptical crowd for him. also, he's been spending so much time at fund-raisers, this is a chance for him to get out there and actually be with voters. >> we'll see how he does and be on the ground sunday on "this week." but right now, the other top stories with amy. you got this runway scare in new york yesterday. >> that's right, it was a terrifying crash on the runway at laguardia airport. take a look at this video that shows crews overnight trying to use a crane to move the delta jet, which skidded and slammed into a fence just a few feet from the water. abc's david kerley has firsthand accounts from the horrified passengers. >> reporter: off the runway smashing through a fence, perched over the bay. >> i just survived. >> reporter: the more than 130 on board had to slide down the wing, hop to the snowy ground. it was those ground crews that called it in. >> tower, you have an aircraft off 3-1. on the north vehicle road. >> reporter: in new york crews use a special code for serious incidents, it's 34, 3-4. >> the airport is closed. we've got a 3-4. >> reporter: passengers evacuating and one of the wing's fuel tanks leaking on this delta jet from atlanta. >> it was going way too fast to be landing. way too fast. >> reporter: it was making the approach pilots don't like over the water. two previous aircraft said the braking conditions were good in the snow. but two-thirds of the way down this runway the jet veers to the left towards that fence and flushing bay. >> that's why the airplane veered off the runway when they still had quite a bit ahead of them and that may indicate another malfunction happened that we haven't considered. >> reporter: more than 200 suffered injuries. five taken to local hospitals. good news considering how close this jet came to slipping into the bay. for "good morning america," david kerley, abc news, washington. >> we are so glad everyone is okay. well, new video this morning of a train carrying crude oil that derailed and exploded in northwestern illinois thursday. raising even more concerns about rail safety. the crash forced people in a one-mile radius to evacuate. no one was injured, but it comes just weeks after another train with the same newer model railcars crashed in west virginia sending a massive fireball into the sky. in both cases, the trains were carrying crude from north dakota which is more volatile than other kinds of oil. well, the fbi is joining the search for two suspects after a federal judge in detroit was shot during an attempted robbery outside his home. judge terrence berg was confronted while taking out the garbage. he was shot in the leg and listed in serious condition but he is expected to recover. and some better than expected news this morning about the economy, 295,000 jobs were created last month, most of them in food services construction and health care the unemployment rate dropped to 5.5% thats to lowest since may of 2008. hourly wages also rose last month. and police in south korea say the man who slashed mark lippert with a ten-inch knife will be charged with attempted murder. authorities have revealed the suspect described as an anti-american activist has visited north korea several times. the attack is also raising security questions because the ambassador had just one unarmed guard with him. well, finally, most of us consider ourselves dedicated parents, we would do anything for our children. and apparently, it is no different for mama and papa birds. take a look at these committed bald eagles in pennsylvania sitting on their eggs trying to keep their offspring warm even as the snow piled higher and higher. look at that. everything was covered but the little bird's head. now, that is dedication. you know what, i love this part. she said, no, no, i could and then they proposed possible scenarios and none of them, they said, fit the bill. >> isn't that the first question asked before someone is picked for a jury? >> absolutely, absolutely. to get on a jury like this you have to have said in jury selection i could impose the death penalty in a particular case. >> now, the judge said he would not take her off the jury. was that ever conceivable? >> no, because, look, i understand that the jurors were frustrated, right? they want someone who -- their position would be she wouldn't deliberate with us, right? you know, the other way to look at it is she wouldn't agree with us. she wouldn't come over to our side. judges have to be incredibly careful about removing a juror from the case because that juror isn't getting along or isn't agreeing. it's very, very unusual that a judge would ever agree to remove a juror in a case like that. there would have to be misconduct on the part of the judge and simply saying that this juror is not deliberating with us enough is not nearly enough. >> now, you thought this whole trial was a waste of -- >> enormous waste of -- >> state resources. surprised that 11 jurors -- >> a little surprised because i think that jodi arias actually had a stronger defense this time around. but, look, no matter what the outcome here, i still would have said that i thought that this was a waste of time and resources, et cetera. and money, but this now -- this hung jury maybes it even more so. >> dan abrams, thanks very much. >> okay, george. now to nascar superstar kurt busch. he has been cleared of criminal charges over the alleged assault against his ex-girlfriend. the question now is when will he return to the track? "shark tank" has been refashioned. both contestants showing off their products with the shower theme this morning and we even got some viewers at home to test them out. there they are. >> the little rubber duckie was a nice touch. >> she had the pink heels on to match, i just want to say. >> as you said, robin, all in. she always is. and it's dj friday. dj b-hen is with us spinning us into the weekend. he's playing kelly clarkson's anthem, "stronger," as i'm sure you can tell. we just loved having her on the show this week and now the star is speaking out after being criticized with really nasty comments. kelly had such a wonderful response and you don't want to miss it. it is inspiring, to say the least. >> perfect pitch in a lot of ways. it was just right. >> we have a lot coming up but first news from amy. good morning, everyone. we begin with harrison ford's plane crash. the actor suffering what are described as moderate injuries after crash landing his vintage plane on a golf course in southern california. abc's nick watt has the latest on the crash and ford's condition. nick, good morning. >> reporter: amy, behind that's what's left behind ford's plane landed on a golf course here in west los angeles. now, the action happened at about a quarter after 2:00 in the afternoon. ford, an experienced pilot, had just taken off from santa monica airport when he radioed the tower requesting permission to come back in to land. engine failure, he said. but he didn't make it to the runway. he crash landed here on the golf course. startled golfers rushing to his aid, among them a spinal surgeon, pulling ford from the cockpit of the plane. there was no fire. paramedics were quickly on the scene and ford was strapped to a gurney and rushed to a nearby hospital. there's a house just 200 feet from the crash site right there. ford clipped a tree managed to land on the fairway here and his son reported tweeted from the hospital last night, dad is strong, banged up, but okay. >> nick watt, thank you. investigators here in new york are trying to figure out what led up to a delta jet skidding off the runway. that plane was just moved into a hangar. it stopped just a few feet from the icy water bordering the airport. the labor department says 295,000 jobs were created last month, that's about 50,000 more than expected. the unemployment rate dropped to 5.5%. and the state department is reviewing thousands of messages to determine whether clinton broke a rule that prohibited staffers from including sensitive information in private e-mails. while clinton's private account was not illegal, she was in clear violation of a policy that required her to turn over e-mails from a private account. overseas new concern in iraq this morning that isis fighters are destroying ancient artifacts. this time they have reportedly bulldozed this ancient site that dates back to 13 b.c. no word on the extent of the damage, and just last week, isis gangs videotaped themselves destroying ancient artifacts in this museum in mosul. the u.n. calling it a war crime. well, a risky rescue at a popular ski resort. about 200 skiers in italy trapped in cable cars high above the slopes in heavy winds after a falling tree cut the power. rescuers in a helicopter lowered themselves down onto the cable cars to then lower each skier to the ground. remarkably, no one was injured. and finally, an unlikely legal battle for you to chew on over the breakfast table. rock and roll hall of famers hall & oates suing a small cereal company in brooklyn. the duo claims haulin' oats granola, see it there, infringes on their trademark, which is meant to stop food-related puns being associated with their names. part of their evidence is their first album cover "whole oats," well, the whole thing seems "out of touch," right? >> the truth is it's hard for me to say this, because i don't always do this, but it's being grateful for what you have. i mean it's so easy for all of us to focus on the negative things, but usually the positive in your life outweighs that and you have to just be thankful for what you have right now. and that's what i try to work on. my son also helps me with that. >> julian. >> the thing is you can't wallow in sadness or stay in bed when you have a child and they're so full of life and wonder and he brings me so much joy. >> you are so busy. you're working on this new project with ellen tracy being the brand ambassador. how did this come about? >> well, first of all, we're looking for high school seniors who know they're going to college in the fall and maybe haven't decided what they want to be when they complete college, so they're going to be very curious young people who are saying, i want from the very first day i set foot on a college campus to begin to think about what my opportunities are when i get my education. so we want them to be very curious, we want them to be open to careers in anything, and we want them to say, uh-oh, walt disney entertainment, maybe that's the place for me, and we also want them to have a financial need, which means everybody, and so it really is a good student who is curious, who wants to take control of his education or her education and think about life after it. >> so if it that student is watching at home right now or their parents, how do they become involved? can't they send us a tape? >> reporter: he famously tried to avoid seeing the baby on his hit series "seinfeld," but in real life, jerry seinfeld is a devoted father of three. what was the most challenging thing that you had to tackle as a dad in that infant stage? >> i did have a kid throw up in a sink one time. one of the biggest things of being a dad is get the throw-up in the toilet, not the sink. you know why? you can't flush a sink. >> this is true. but who is jerry seinfeld, the dad, the father of three?
