definitely one of a kind. >> the surveillance camera that caught the crime. did the crooks even know what they had? and the hollywood happy ending. lupita nyong'o's stunning oscar dress stolen and now take a look at the map. we've got a storm creeping up on the west coast and in the east another storm brewing down south, yet another weekend storm. this one will soon stretch all the way up into the beleaguered northeast. >> and the nasty weather added to a nightmare for passengers on an american airlines flight out of dallas overnight. they were stuck collectively at the gate and on the tarmac for roughly nine hours capturing the mood on that plane with their cell phones. >> yeah, dipping into the drinks cart, i can see. >> as they should be. our reena ninan is following the story for us. good morning, reena. >> hey, paula, dan, good morning. by the time you make it here to the check-in counter, the toughest part of your journey might be perhaps be the security line. just behind me. but for some american airlines passengers, they experienced a series of flight delays turning into a travel nightmare they won't soon forget. a nightmare for passengers on american airlines flight 382. what was supposed to be a short nearly one-hour flight from dallas to oklahoma city turned into an eternity. delay after delay keeping travelers stuck on the plane nine long hours after the flight was scheduled to take off. >> ten hours later it feels great to be home. it's an incredibly stressful day. don't ever want to do that again. >> reporter: passengers catching the mood on the plane with their cell phones. >> it was just up and down. like we were happy one second because we thought we were leaving then the next second we were just deflated because we were turning back to the gate. >> reporter: american airlines tells abc news "we apologize for the frustrating experience. yesterday was a challenging day at dfw due to extreme weather impacting north texas. the safety of our passengers and employees is always our top priority." delays began because of winter weather and plane de-icing, but passengers were never held on the actual tarmac for longer than the three-hour limit set by the passengers' bill of rights. >> it was an unfortunate event. we're all here, nothing we can do about it. >> reporter: but then a different law caused yet another delay. the flight crew had to be relieved after working more than the legal eight hours. at times the scene on the plane becoming chaotic. passengers taking it upon themselves to raid the liquor fridge. >> it was kind of a mix of comedy and anger as tensions were high. >> reporter: the good news, though, in 2009 there were 868 domestic flight delays, people stuck on tarmacs more than three hours but since passenger protections put in place that dropped to just 30 last year. >> so some positive news. i like what that guy said about the mixture of comedy and anger. probably unwise to add booze into that mix but, reena, thank you. for more on this let's bring in abc news aviation consultant steve ganyard. steve, technically, and reena mentioned this, the airline didn't violate the passengers' bill of rights because the plane wasn't on the actual tarmac for more than three hours, but you say that is really not good enough. >> dan, i think they're being a little too clever by half here. they're saying well, we trapped you on this airplane for nine hours but at least we didn't keep you out on the tarmac for three of those nine. so there are questions for american. why would you board an airplane and keep people on for four and five hours or send an airplane to get de-iced and then have it sit there for 90 minutes. why does it take 90 minutes to do that so i think american is really trying to defend the indefensible here. >> now despite the infuriating nature of this experience to the passengers you do want to make a point de-icing is of paramount importance, why? >> well, sometimes people don't understand why the de-icing process is is so important because any time you get ice or frost on a wing, you've changed that wing in a way that could make it so it couldn't be able to fly. some of the worst aviation mishaps ever in history have been due to icing, so it's very, very important for the airplanes to be properly de-iced, but in this case the weather had been bad for days in dallas. american, this was not a surprise to american that they should have been better prepared and should have executed better. >> and they are apologizing this morning. stand ganyard, thank you for your expertise. >> and, paula, over to you. >> thank you, dan. now for many what feels like the never-ending winter weather. a storm developing, one that will bring snow, sleet and freezing rain all that familiar from the rockies all the way to new england and rob is tracking it all. hi, rob. >> i can tell you my friends in dallas even are tired of this winter. they've had a nasty stretch for the past week. all right, let's talk about where the storm is and how far it's going to stretch. boy, the accidents yesterday, over 400 cancellations in flights, a lot of those were in the dallas forth worth area. i-35 coming to a crawl because of just 1 to 2 inches of snow but that in the dallas area is enough. all right, this next storm will clip north texas, we've got winter weather advisories and now a winter storm warning posted for st. louis and a winter storm watch for parts of western new england, freezing rain in oklahoma and this blossoms as it gets across the ohio river, st. louis towards cleveland across through pittsburgh and then the rain/snow line dancing over the new york city area and see greater amounts across further to the north. could see a foot in places like st. louis and western mass too. that's a quick check on what's going on. we'll talk more about the bitter cold and a california storm, as well, a little later in the broadcast. >> but, rob, this is the first day of meteorological spring, is that right? >> you're getting ahead of yourself. it's tomorrow, but i like the optimism. >> never correct me on the weather, rob. i know you're a meteorologist and everything. all right. excellent. thank you. so we'll talk more about that coming up, thank you. we're going to move on now to what appears to be a vicious political assassination making headlines across the planet this morning. a popular and outspoken critic of russian president vladimir putin shot in the back right out in the open just blocks from the kremlin, and abc's chief foreign correspondent terry moran is on the story. terry, good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning, dan. moscow is in shock today and a sharp chill of fear has ripped across russia. one of vladimir putin's fiercest critics, as you say gunned down in broad daylight. four bullets in the back in the very shadow of the kremlin. this morning in moscow, flowers on a bridge usually filled with pedestrians and tourists mark the spot of the brazen killing. the scene last night was eerie, incredible, the body of boris nemtsov, a veteran russian politician, longtime putin foe, lay on the ground, four bullets in his back. the killing coming one day before nemtsov was going to lead a march of peace against putin's war in ukraine. a spokesman for the russian interior says he was walking with a female acquaintance when assassins leapt from a white car and opened fire. take a look at this surveillance video. that's the getaway car reportedly heading toward the crime scene, a black sedan close behind. vladimir putin says he is personally taking charge of the investigation into nemtsov's killing. kremlin spokes p pern dmitry pesko saying in a statement, "putin believe ss the cruel murder has every sign of a contract killing." nemtsov was a former deputy minister in the 1990s once described a possible president himself but putin outmaneuvered him and nemtsov became a harsh critic organizing protests and exposing massive high level corruption especially during the winter olympics in sochi describing putin to abc news' brian ross. >> do you worry what will happen to you? >> everybody against him must be very careful. i think that we must replace him because he did everything against the interests on my country. >> reporter: alarming times, reminiscent of the cold war as a recent gallup poll reveals that americans now view russia and putin as america's greatest enemy. nemtsov's friends and supporters gathering now in moscow at the scene there. they say sunday's peace march will go on and they also say nemtsov was working on another major expose when he was killed. he had evidence, he claimed, of the use of russian troops in the war in ukraine. paula. >> a lot more questions than answers this morning, terry moran from london, thank you. and we're getting a surprising new look at the isis executioner known as jihadi john. here he is unmasked wearing a pittsburgh pirates cap while attending a british university. the team saying they're sickened by that image of the world's most wanted killer, and chief investigative correspondent brian ross has the very latest from london this morning on the worldwide manhunt to find him. brian. >> reporter: well, good morning, paula. the man and the family have now fled their home. the family now in hiding as the world asks how could their college educated son, mohammed emwazi, turn into a brutal killer for isis? this is what he looks like without his mask and his knife. a london college photo on the front pages of british newspapers this morning showing a young man with a sneer and unaccountably a pittsburgh pirates baseball cap. how emwazi went from this to this is the puzzle authorities and friends are trying to answer this morning. >> we'll begin to slaughter your people on your streets. >> reporter: one friend told the bbc emwazi was happy with his life after he graduated from university. >> we never realized that he will go to the jihadi. >> reporter: but one of his emwazi's elementary school teachers told the bbc, he was put into anger management therapy at the age of 11 because he was getting into too many fights. >> we'd find that he'd get very angry and worked up, and it would take him a long time to calm himself down. >> reporter: emwazi came of age in london at a time when radical islamists were urging young men to join the jihad against the u.s. and britain. most prominent was the activist emgem choudhury who we went to find outside the biggest mosque friday. he said he did not know emwazi but called him a muslim brother whose brutal acts he refused to condemn. >> reporter: so as of now you don't want to condemn him. >> i want to condemn. i want to condemn you guys for being the tongue of the biggest terrorists in the world of the americans and your allies the british. >> reporter: the other question being asked here this morning is how emwazi was able to slip out of the country and join isis even though he was under surveillance by british security services. this morning, the british prime minister is saying essentially there are just too many young men being watched to keep a tight look on all of them. paula. >> that number in the thousands, brian ross, thank you. tomorrow you don't want to miss our martha raddatz's live interview with secretary of state john kerry. again, that's tomorrow on abc's "this week." >> so striking to see that cleric refusing to condemn the actions of jihadi john. >> startling, shocking. i think we all gasped. >> he's a man who's made many controversial comments in the past. a lot of other news overnight. and for that, as always we check the morning headlines with dr. ron claiborne. good morning, sir. >> good to keep climbing. they're still more than a dollar less than they were this time last year. and president obama signed a late night last-minute stopgap bill passed by congress to extend funding to the department of homeland security for a week. the measure prevented the department's money from being cut off at midnight. a three-week extension failed to pass the house because republicans, some republicans want to repeal the president's executive action on immigration attached to homeland security spending. democrats want to pass a stand-alone full year funding bill. and it looks like this year's flu vaccine is even less effective than previously reported. just 18%, in fact, against the dominant strain of this year's flu, that's a drop from 23% protection level estimated for the flu shot earlier this season and for children it was even worse. the cdc says the nasal spray version may not offer any protection for young people at all. and take a look at this video from wisconsin coming up. an suv you're going to see traveling on an interstate highway when the driver loses control, runs off the road there, rolls over five times breaking into pieces, a huge chunk. three passengers, including a 5-year-old boy, were ejected from that vehicle, but no one was killed. investigators say the passengers were not wearing their seat belts. they are surprised that anyone survived. >> that's a miracle. >> that is amazing. also, caught on camera, a ohio state trooper leaping over the guardrail before a semi truck slams into his cruiser. the officer was not hurt. the thank you. now to the historic royal visit to the far east. prince william touring the tsunami zone in japan and off to china tomorrow and that is where we find abc's bob woodruff this morning in beijing with the latest on this story. >> reporter: it's a day that began with fun for william, the duke of cambridge, first at this anchor chair in tokyo. then at the studio where japan's most loved drama is produced. he got the chance to mix with the actors and play the role of the warlord with a helmet and a samurai sword. much of his trip is to promote british innovation in japan so like launching a ship with a bottle of champagne, he smashed the barrel filled with saiki, japan's famous booze. with him is the ceo of aston martin, so william gunned the engine, one of his most favorite cars, and you may remember he and kate borrowed his father's aston martin to drive away from their wedding. but the more emotional visit was with japan's prime minister shinzo abe, to fukushima where they are helping children to smile again since the deadly tsunami ripped through their towns and villages four years ago. a reminder that it was 20 years ago prince william's mother diana came to comfort the victims of the kobi earthquake. >> well, i think it would have been impossible for william to go to japan and not to make mention of the tsunami or visit the sites devastated by the tsunami. it was such an enormous natural disaster. >> reporter: while william is in asia, prince harry is retiring later this year from the military off two tours in afghanistan. harry's next chapter, his principal focus helping the wounded warrior leaving time for the people's prince to devote time to his other passion, africa. as for william, he'll be leaving japan tomorrow and heading here to
