hollywood this morning. everyone ready for those oscar nominations coming up in just a little bit. you know how we feel about the oscars. we're not the only ones. take a look at our studio crew. and host neil patrick harris getting geared up already, tweeting last night, i really need to finish counting all those ballots. >> so we have so much to discuss. that's ahead. but first, we're going to get started with the news and that homegrown terrorist. a young man in ohio inspired by isis and planning a major attack on our nation's capital. arrested by the fbi. abc's pierre thomas is in washington with the latest on all that. good morning, pierre. >> reporter: good morning, robin. today the fbi's accusing a young man from america's heartland of contemplating a massacre. the suspect, christopher lee cornell, only 20, seen here in a mug shot taken last night, was arrested after buying two m-15 assault rifles like this and 600 rounds of ammunition. >> as soon as the purchase was over and he left the door, several agents came out and tackled him here in the parking lot and took him down. >> reporter: this is cornell in a high school wrestling photo in more innocent days. according to the fbi, cornell was in the final stage of a murderous plot, an all-out assault on congress using the rifles but also pipe bombs. the fbi locked in on cornell after a confidential informant said he had been posting disturbing messages on twitter expressing support for al qaeda and isis. one tweet stated, "i believe we should just wage jihad under our own orders and plan attacks." at one point he cites the long-dead anwar al awlaki of al qaeda in the arabian peninsula as having already given the thumbs up for such attacks. the fbi has kept cornell under constant surveillance since last fall, watching his every move in a classic sting. cornell's father was blunt. his son was set up. >> he was a vulnerable, gullible 16-year-old in a 20-year-old body and i think the fbi coerced him. there was no way he came up with these terrorist plots. somebody put that in his head. >> reporter: cornell's dad said his son was a momma's boy but the fbi claims that the young man had a dark side, his parents never saw. >> thanks very much. we're going to turn to a big shake-up at the secret service. four top officials forced out. two more retire. the latest fallout from a series of high-profile missteps including that major security breach at the white house. abc's jim avila has the story. >> reporter: the final straw for the secret service, that knife-wielding veteran who jumped the fence and ran right into the white house making it inside the east room minutes after president obama had left by helicopter. this, following a stinging list of gaffes that include those gate-crashers that made it inside a state dinner without invites, the agents caught in a payment dispute with prostitutes on a presidential visit to colombia. the armed private security guard who somehow was able to get on board an elevator with president obama. and those bullets that hit the white house without the secret service knowing about them for days. still, the president stood by the secret service. >> the secret service does a great job. thank you. i'm grateful for the sacrifices they make on my behalf. >> reporter: but a brutal report by the department of homeland security, found the secret service, an organization starved for leadership, the first step, secret service director julia pierson was forced out in october, and this morning four more at the top removed from their positions. two more retiring. the acting director promising to do better. >> we are confident we can fulfill our mission with honor and restore the secret service's rightful place as the most respected protection service in the world. >> reporter: no comment from the white house overnight. president obama as we heard has never personally criticized the men and women sworn to take a bullet for him. robin. >> all right, jim. now to that new trouble for the nfl, a major test of its new personal conduct policy. indianapolis colts linebacker josh mcnary charged with sexual assault just days before the team's big game for a chance to play in the super bowl. abc's ryan smith is here with that story. good morning, ryan. >> good morning, robin. after what could be one of the worst public relations years for the nfl with scandals involving ray rice and adrian peterson, now these charges coming just before one of the nfl's biggest weekends of the year. >> the colts have advanced to the afc championship game. >> reporter: this morning, as the indianapolis colts prepare to face the new england patriots sunday for a shot at the super bowl, colts linebacker josh mcnary charged with rape, criminal confinement and battery. >> this really will be a way to test if the nfl is serious about this new policy. >> reporter: according to police documents, the alleged victim says she was drinking at an indianapolis bar december 1st when she met a man and later ended up at his apartment, though she doesn't recall how. she claims a physical fight ensued followed by the sexual assault. eventually, she says she managed to grab the man's cell phone and leave. it was that phone that led police to mcnary, and when they arrived to question him, they say he replied, i know why you're here. gesturing to his bed sheets, saying, i preserved it for you because i knew you would be coming. mcnary's attorney releasing this statement overnight, "joshua mcnary unhesitatingly denies all accusations made against him." now, the nfl telling abc news that the case is under review under their new personal conduct policy. implemented in december. the policy says players charged with violent crimes may be placed on leave without pay following an investigation. >> if they announce and he still is playing, that would be a shock to me. >> reporter: and the colts telling us overnight, "at this time we are very concerned and trying to find out what the relevant facts are, but we have insufficient information to venture any opinion." mcnary, a west point grad who spent two years on active duty before joining the colts was taken into custody last night and released. now, on the felony charges he faces, if convicted, he could face significant prison time. >> the nfl can take action after an investigation. >> you have to wonder will they act quickly before the game this weekend? >> thank you. we're going to turn now to that icy weather creating dangerous conditions across the country. it's being blamed for dozens of driving accidents and firefighters called in for dramatic rescue after one teenager fell through the ice. ginger is tracking it all. >> there were several rescues including brewer, the dog, the golden retriever here, rescued after an hour in the water. and, yes, we're about to get into a january thaw so that's going to be our next threat, but first, almost half the country is still covered in snow. we've got this deep freeze and the roads, look it. that deep january chill turning highways to ice from texas to virginia. in west texas, this accident fatal. a prison transportation bus hitting a patch of ice careening off an overpass and colliding with a moving freight train leaving ten dead and at least five others injured. >> it's unbelievable, the damage, the amount of damage it made. >> reporter: nearly 350 crashes reported in virginia, with startling scenes in north carolina like this one. fire truck flipping after skidding on ice. in michigan, one teen died after walking out onto the ice but in hanover, massachusetts -- >> my friend just fell through the water. >> reporter: a 19-year-old rescued, after falling through while playing ice hockey submerged for nearly ten minutes. >> he was holding himself afloat with a hockey stick. he was very cold. he indicated to our people that he thought he was going to pass out. >> reporter: firefighters using an ice rescue sled to pull him to shore before transporting him to a local hospital. as we chisel our way now halfway through meteorological winter we can soon change president obama proposing new legislation that would require companies to give workers paid sick leave. abc's jonathan karl is at the white house this morning. good morning, jon. >> reporter: good morning, robin. the white house says some 43 million workers in the united states don't have any paid sick leave at all, so the president is calling on congress to pass a law that would require companies to give at least seven days of paid sick leave to their employees, he's also asking for $2 billion to be given to the states and cities to help them pass or start their own programs with family and medical leave and he's acting on his own making it easier for federal employees to get up to six weeks of maternity leave. the president is promising a big push on all of this beginning next week, robin, with the state of the union address. >> the big question, how much of a chance does this have to pass, jon? >> reporter: well, this will be an uphill battle, to say the least. republicans don't like the idea of imposing expensive new regulations on companies, on employers and democrats have been trying to pass this bill since 2005. as you can imagine it won't be any easier now that republicans are in control of both the house and senate. >> thanks very much. studies have shown again and again and again that paid sick leave, not only benefits workers and their families but employers, as well, because productivity goes up and you heard jon mention about 43 million americans don't have paid sick leave. how many times does dr. besser say if you're sick, stay home. well these americans are saying we can't stay home because we won't get paid. >> important stuff, thanks. amy has the other top stories. and we begin with the pope's historic trip to the philippines. pope francis arriving this morning saying he'll focus on poverty during his visit. hundreds of thousands of people lined his route from the airport. a national holiday has been declared. the philippines is the largest catholic nation in asia. up to 6 million people are expected to attend his outdoor mass. and new evidence this morning of the brutality of a recent attack in nigeria carried out by the islamic militant group boko haram. amnesty international says this is an infrared satellite image of a town before the attack. you see buildings packed between those red marks. others are trees and vegetation and then take a look at this same area after the attack. 3700 buildings in two towns were damaged or destroyed and as many as 2,000 civilians were killed. survivors have been forced into a refugee camp. well, the u.s. has freed five more detainees from the prison at guantanamo bay. the men were accused of fighting for al qaeda. the release sparking protests in congress. many of the prisoners were transferred to oman which shares a border with yemen, a hotbed of activity. and some frightening moments at a mall near san jose, california, a car came crashing through this macy's, plowing 50 feet into the store sending racks of clothes flying. four people were injured and police say the driver may have had a medical condition causing her to lose control. well, a dangerous stunt in chicago. a man was seen dangling off the roof of this 46-story hotel. he's hanging on right there with his two arms as another man took his picture. they were gone within minutes. their identities, though, still unknown. and in hawaii, a tour called the ultimate whale watch you can see lived up to its name. wow! that humpback whale began slapping the water with its fin and then watch as it actually strikes its head against the tour's inflatable boat. and the screams ensued. they believe possibly distracted by her calf. one man aboard yelling "this is awesome." >> that's one word for it. >> yeah. >> or scary. finally, a lesson in how not to make a comeback. blackberry we know has been struggling to compete against the iphone. well, the company recently tweeted this marketing message, it said keep up the conversation on twitter and it showed a picture of its classic phone. but take a look at the bottom time stamp. the message was sent via twitter for iphone. whoever was tweeting for blackberry was using an iphone. they quickly deleted the tweet but not quickly enough. >> i love the blackberry. >> to which i say duh! >> yeah, it hurts, right. >> still stinging. >> that's a tough one. okay, thank you. we're going to stay with high-tech now and a huge battle brewing. apple has its eyes on gopro that make the tiny cameras we love. remember when ginger jumped out of that someone else, an ice climber, a skydiver, even a superstar on stage, it's the gopro. >> incredible. >> reporter: but this morning even the company behind an estimated 100 hours of videos uploaded every second may not have seen this coming. >> whoa! >> reporter: apple may be getting into the wearable camera game. a newly reassigned patent shows off features of what could be an apple action camera with a familiar looking wireless remote control. one that looks very much like the new apple watch. apple takes out all kinds of patents for things that never end up on a store shelf but even the very mention of an apple wearable camera temporarily sent shock waves through gopro. their sales at an estimated $280 million per year. traders rushing to sell 10 million shares of gopro stock briefly sending the price tumbling by 12%. no surprise apple isn't talking and neither is gopro. if the battle heats up, you can bet there will be video. for "good morning america," neal karlinsky, [ cheers and applause ] tommy caldwell and kevin jorgeson celebrating on top of the world. [ cheers and applause ] after reaching the summit of yosemite's el capitan capping a record-setting free climb up the rocks' vertical dawn wall. the pair using only their hands and feet with only ropes to prevent deadly falls. >> it's getting pretty rowdy. >> reporter: during their 19-day, 3,000-foot journey, the climbers braving a windstorm. >> getting tossed around. >> reporter: and clinging to razor sharp edges with bloody figures. even r&r was extreme sleeping in these tents dangling precariously from the rock's edge. on day eight kevin struggling to pass one of el capitan's toughest points. >> thoughts crossed my mind i should just throw in the towel. >> reporter: but after seven more days and 11 gasp-worthy falls kevin finally turning that impossible corner. >> it's pretty surreal to wake up and to have the climb complete. it's pretty hard to describe. >> and how are your hands and feet, both of you, ooh. >> at least my hands are a little beat. they have a lot of bruises and cuts on them and i take a lot of ibuprofen every morning but the feet are doing well. >> glad to hear it, kevin, we saw in aditi's piece you had that tough time and made that turn. you thought maybe, hmm, how did you remain positive? how did you keep going? >> i think the word that i used is just resolve. i didn't want to accept any other outcome, but getting up that route, so i tried to push all the negative thoughts of not being able to do it out and picture getting across that traverse and that's eventually what happened. >> it had to be a great feeling when you made that turn and, tommy, part of the story is you didn't leave your friend behind. you know, that you were doing a little bit better. kevin was struggling at that point and many wondered if you would go on without him but you didn't. that says a lot about your character, tommy. >> thank you. i have to apologize. my voice is gone for yelling for kevin so much. it was an incredible experience. >> well, if -- you're allowed. you're allowed. all that you've been through those 19 days and hope you feel better soon. i know you saw president obama that he sent out a tweet, as well. and he was saying that you remind us that anything is possible. kevin, i'll let you speak for both of you guys. what do you think your message is to people who watched you. >> well, i think what made us stick with this climb for so long, you know, tommy envisioned this thing seven years ago and i joined the team six years ago is like i said, realizing that dream and seeing this through to completion, so it's great that so many people are inspired by the project and hopefully they can find the equivalent of their own dawn wall and stick with it and see it through, as well. >> i like how you say that. their equivalent. not everyone will do what both of you have done but you're right, we find our own wall to scale. so what's next now that you have -- >> that's right. >> -- literally and figuratively reached the top. what's next for you? developments in that homegrown terror plot. the father of christopher lee cornell is defending his son saying he is not a terrorist. the elder cornell claims the fbi coerced his son into plotting an attack on the u.s. capitol with pipe bombs and assault rifles. christopher cornell was arrested after buying two rifles and 600 rounds of ammunition. the fbi had him under surveillance since last fall. and pope francis has arrived in the philippines hundreds of thousands of people greeting him in manila this morning but his comments before his arrival are making news. the pope spoke about the recent terror attack on a french magazine that mocked the prophet muhammad. the pope saying, "there are limits to freedom of expression when religion is insulted." and president obama today announcing a plan to expand sick leave for federal workers. he is ordering federal agencies to advance six weeks of paid sick leave to new parents providing it up front even if they haven't accrued the days. the president is also asking congress for $2 billion to encourage states to create paid family and medical leave programs. and an important recall for parents this morning. ikea is recalling 169,000 crib mattresses because babies could become trapped. the furniture chain says some of the mattresses are too short for their cribs. the five models are listed here. there have been at least two reports of infants getting trapped between the mattress and the panels. blocked a major highway locked inside concrete barrels. crew had to use tools to cut the barrels open so the protesters could be arrested. after an electrical malfunction, one survivor is already suing. and in philadelphia, crews have been working to close off a water main that's been spewing formed so much ice, they gave up trying to shut it off last night. finally, some video game enthusiasts are closing in on a major milestone tomorrow. they will have played video games for 24 hours a day, seven days a week for 500 straight days, all while streaming live. the florida-based gamers are bunking together in what they call streamer house where they each take an eight-hour shift sitting on the couch playing video games. so far they racked up 36 million views from all over the world and they're living quite well on all the ad money they have been earning for their site. >> some job. >> yes. to play video games all day. them. one -- >> yep. we'll move on to health news. a big announcement from the fda this morning, approving a brand-new weight loss device that works by tricking your brain into thinking your stomach is full. abc's reena ninan has the details. >> reporter: for the first time in almost a decade the fda approving a new obesity device called the maestro rechargeable system, a weight loss aid for overweight adults with a bmi of 35 to 45 who also have at least one other obesity-related condition like type 2 diabetes. here is how it works. the pacemaker-like device is implanted into the abdomen and sends sporadic electrical pulses to temporarily shut off the nerve that tells your brain if your stomach is feeling empty or full. >> when the nerves are shut off patients tend to lose their appetite and eat less and therefore lose weight. >> reporter: doctors say it could be a good fit for patients looking for a procedure less invasive than gastric bypass. 63-year-old seen here for an upcoming series, the first patient to speak about using it publicly has been using it for three years and lost around 70 pounds. >> i was always overweight. i was overweight as a child and i was on continuous diets all my life. this has been just a life saver. >> reporter: but doctors are careful to say this device that has had adverse reactions including in some cases nausea and chest pain is
