[ speaking a foreign language ] "we claim responsibility," he says, "for this operation as a vengeance for the messenger of allah" and he goes on to claim al qaeda chose the target, laid the plan, financed the operation and appointed its leader. and he claims the now-dead american radical cleric anwar al awlaki was responsible for choosing the gunmen and he said the actions of the third gunman amedy coulibaly were separate, but coincided with the attack on "charlie hebdo." with pictures of the 9/11 attack, he says these wounds have not healed and won't be it in paris, new york or washington. the al qaeda claim of responsibility is consistent with what the two kouachi brothers shouted as they left the magazine one week ago today. new video shows how they made their initial escape opening fire on the first police car to confront them. the police car retreats, clearing the way on the narrow streets of paris for the gunmen to escape and go on to kill others. in its claim this morning al qaeda offers no hard proof, no pictures in yemen, no martyrdom videos but it's clearly a time to come a week after the assault as new copies of that magazine hit the street, george. >> the french are showing no fear in the face of terrorism. that new issue of "charlie hebdo" selling out across the country this morning with people waiting hours to buy it. abc's terry moran is in paris with more on that side of the story. good morning, terry. >> reporter: good morning, robin. here on the famous champs-elysees you can't buy a copy of "charlie hebdo." you can't buy a copy anywhere in france as you pointed out. 700,000 sold out in just a few hours. getting one has become a declaration of defiance against terror but the magazine once again spiking tension with the muslim community here and around the world while french authorities continue to pursue every lead into the terror underground. before dawn this morning, people lining up at shops and news kiosks waiting while drivers loaded up copies of "charlie hebdo" and it seemed to be a privilege for them. "distributing 'charlie hebdo,' says jean batiste, it warms my heart because we say to ourselves he is still here. he has never left. the lines were so long they announced this morning they will print 5 million copies of this issue. it usually prints 60,000. at a press conference the "charlie hebdo" staff spoke out. traumatized still. "we're just cartoonists who like to draw little characters like when we were kids," luz, who drew the cover said. the terrorists were kids so at one stage they lost their sense of humor. but muslim leaders here in france and around the world blasted the new issue as a provocation and one said an act of war. france is practically on a war footing, 10,000 troops deployed. the anti-semitic comedian arrested for incitement after his facebook post supported the attackers. in an extraordinary moment in the national assembly politicians rising singing the french national anthem. ♪ france's roused into action, no question about it. considering a crackdown, those legislators right now debating whether or not french should have some version of a patriot act which is a very controversial idea here. george. >> okay, terry, thanks very much. we're going to turn now to that strange plot to poison the speaker of the house second in line for the presidency. a bartender from john boehner's country club in his home state of ohio has been arrested for threatening to murder the speaker. abc's pierre thomas in washington with the latest. >> reporter: good morning. the suspect appears to be mentally ill but the fbi believes he was a serious threat to the speaker of the house. authorities say michael hoyt believes he's jesus christ and that speaker john boehner is the devil. the 44-year-old was a bartender at this country club near boehner's hometown in ohio for the last 5 1/2 years after he was fired last october, hoyt dialed 911. he hung up but when police responded to his home, he gave a chilling account. he allegedly told them he was going to kill boehner because boehner was mean to him at the country club. hoyt later admitted to the fbi he had been thinking about poisoning boehner's drinks but was fired before he could do so. he also claimed to police he contemplated shooting boehner with his semiautomatic beretta pistol. the day before calling 911 he sent boehner's wife an e-mail allegedly, "if i had any intention of hurting mr. boehner i could have poisoned his wine many, many times." boehner's wife responded "what is this about?" contacted by the fbi he says he recalled him but did not remember any confrontations. tuesday he declined comment. hoyt's been charged with threatening to murder the speaker of the house and is receiving psychiatric evaluations. it was clearly a close call for the man second in line for the presidency. a mentally unstable man serving drinks with bad intentions, robin. all right, pierre, and now to that deadly train tragedy where you are in washington we're learning more this morning about the woman who died on that smoke-filled train and there are new questions about why it took so long to get passengers to safety. abc's david kerley is in washington with the latest on that. good morning, david. >> reporter: good morning, robin. still a lot of unanswered questions this morning that we're not getting answers from district officials. did the firefighters respond quickly enough? did they know riders were at risk leading all of us to wonder what would you do in a similar situation? this morning, we know the identity of the woman who died as this dramatic scene unfolded near d.c.'s l'enfant station. karen glover was a 61-year-old computer consultant who leaves behind two sons and three grandchildren. >> we need a medic. >> make a hole. make a hole. >> reporter: but why did this happen? as the lights went dark and cars filled with smoke. >> please stay calm. please stay calm. >> reporter: the conductor says he's waiting for a train to clear so he can back up to the platform. >> please do not open the doors. if you open the doors the train will not move. >> reporter: but the train never moves and outraged passengers say they had to wait 45 minutes or longer for evacuation. >> this is the crap we were breathing. for an hour. for an hour! >> reporter: but even 24 hours after these traumatic minutes waiting for rescue, d.c.'s mayor who undoubtedly talked with the fire chief and rail officials declined to answer questions about the response, the evacuation, was it quick enough? >> we don't know what time the train actually went down so that's one key piece of information that we don't know. >> reporter: federal investigators want to know too. they will be looking at the local response. one possibility, that electrified third rail. and you can't go into a tunnel until that's shut down? >> that's correct. >> reporter: despite the long wait for evacuation, firefighters who train for trained fires say the safest place is often on the railcar. >> you don't know what's causing the root of the incident. is the train on fire? is there a problem just inside the tunnel? if you exit that train, you may be going into a worse situation. >> it seems counterintuitive but that's the best advice from first responders, shelter in place. a lot to be learned in this investigation, which is now in the hands of the national trabs poration safety board. george. >> okay, david, thanks. we stay in washington. some tough news for those expecting a tax refund this year much abc news obtained an e-mail from the head of the irs saying budget cuts will delay those refund checks and increase the risk of identity theft and jon karl reports from the white house. good morning, jon. >> reporter: it's going to be quite a tax season. in that e-mail sent to all irs employees and obtained by abc news the tax commissioner warns that, the budget cuts delay sending refund checks to taxpayers. the delay will be about a week or so. also the irs help line is going to become much less helpful. only half those who call will get through to somebody. there will be 46,000 fewer audits will be conducted and on top of all that, measures the irs has been planned to put in to protect against identity theft will be delayed as the commissioner writes, we have no choice but to do less with less. >> and, jon, fewer audits means less revenue to the treasury, to the government. is there any chance that this can get fixed this year or is it a lost cause this year? >> reporter: i suppose they could go to congress to get emergency funding, george, but i wouldn't hold your breath for this this congress isn't going to be putting this at the top of their agenda. jon karl, thanks very much. now let's go to amy with today's other top stories. >> good morning, everyone. we begin with breaking news from space. astronauts have been forced to evacuate one section of the international space station because a sensor indicated a possible ammonia leak. nasa says the crew which includes two americans is not in danger. each section of the space station has doors that can be closed to keep fumes from spreading and there are systems in place to then clean the air. and also breaking overnight, new images coming in showing what appears to be the fusage of airasia flight 8501. singapore's defense minister saying these images were captured by an underwater robot in the java sea off indonesia. investigators are already poring over the plane's black boxes in hopes of figuring out why the plane crashed. and lawyers for boston bombing suspect dzhokhar tsarnaev, are asking the jury selection be delayed. they're worried comparisons will be made between the terror attacks in france and the boston attack. and new jersey governor chris christie taking the first step toward a presidential run? a source tells abc news that he will set up a leadership political action committee as early as this month. on tuesday christie called for a, quote, an american renewal during his state of the state address. meanwhile, there's more talk that mitt romney could be leaning toward another white house run. he will address a republican national committee meeting friday. and one more note on 2016. a top white house adviser is joining hillary clinton's team as she inches closer to a possible campaign launch. and police near chicago have released a video frightening scene to warn drivers about the dangers in the snow. watch, as this driver tried but cannot stop on the ice, drove straight into the path of a commuter train. the train slamming on to the passenger side of the car. the driver survived but suffered serious injuries. police warning everyone to slow down. and finally, talk about hungry, hungry hippo. the manager of an african river tour sent us this video. you can see a large animal going underwater. the boat driver rightfully takes off but then he says the hippo just exploded out of the water coming within just a few feet of the back of the boat. the driver gunned the engine getting away in just the nick of time. i looked this up on natgeo. do you know they're highly aggressive and unpredictable and the most dangerous mammal in africa. i would have never known that. thank goodness he gunned it when he did. >> seeing is believing. >> he looked across him. >> that's for sure. >> thanks for bringing us that. now to that bitter billion-dollar divorce battle. the ex-wife of an oklahoma oil baron who says her settlement is not nearly enough. she cashed the check, yes, but she's not giving up her fight for more of the fortune she says they built together. abc's mara schiavocampo is here with that story. good morning, mara. >> reporter: robin, good morning. a billion dollars is a lot of money. the amount barely even fitting on the check itself, but she says she deserves more and is taking her case all the way to the state supreme court. it's one of the largest divorce settlements in u.s. history. but this morning, the former wife of an oil magnate says it's not enough. in november, a judge ordered oklahoma's harold hamm to pay his ex, sue ann arnall close to $1 billion. though she initially refused to cash it, now, a new twist. she has cashed the check but is still appealing the ruling. she claims her ex-husband is worth almost $20 billion. in a statement, arnall says the $1 billion settlement is a small portion of the estate that we built. >> it is her position that she is entitled to more than the percentage she got driving towards 50%. >> reporter: the couple married 26 years ago without a prenup. at the time his company was worth a relatively small $50 million. arnall says she cashed the check so she'd have access to the money during an appeal. a ruling that will decide if this is her first check or the last. now, as the court considers the issue, hamm's attorney claims his worth could be dropping due to falling oil prices. since the divorce trial ended in november, oil has reached a five-year low and they're saying once she cashed the check case closed. >> that might have been one of the motivations also for cashing the check his net worth is dropping. >> she also said she needed money to live on because appeals can stretch on for years, so she got the money. >> all right. mara, thank you very much. >> she got it. and switching gears now to an incredible ocean rescue caught on tape. a man falling overboard from one of the world's biggest cruise ships floating in the water off the coast of mexico, screaming for help, when a passenger on another ship hears him. abc's cecilia vega has the dramatic story. >> reporter: that tiny speck in the ocean, a 22-year-old man gone overboard. somehow falling from royal caribbean's "oasis of the seas." >> i heard what i thought to be a really strange-sounding bird. i noticed that it was a young man screaming "help me." >> reporter: passengers on another cruise ship the "disney magic" traveling the same route spotting the man in the waters off the coast of cozumel, mexico, on thursday. >> basically started screaming at the top of my lungs, man overboard. >> reporter: another disney passenger capturing the dramatic rescue on his cell phone. >> the crew took over from that point, brought the ship to a stop, circled around him. >> reporter: according to witnesses, the man was treading water for about 20 minutes before passengers and crew members on board the "magic" threw him a life vest and ring. the crew launching this lifeboat. >> once i started seeing him swimming i knew he was okay. >> he gave a thumbs up and like a thank you. >> reporter: the man's condition unknown this morning. it's not known how he went overboard or where he fell from. but the top deck of royal caribbean's "oasis of the seas," 21 stories high, longer than a drop from the top of niagara falls. royal caribbean saying that we are grateful for the other ship's assistance royal caribbean says. while disney, abc's parent company, confirming the rescue. >> unfortunately, it does occur fairly often throughout the year. >> >> just kidding. we're going to start this half hour with so much beginning with that urgent manhunt in missouri. police searching for the killers of a missouri college student shot to death while trying to protect a friend during a robbery. abc's tom llamas has that story. >> reporter: this morning police are on the hunt for the cold-blooded killers who they believe gunned down bobby christman, a college sophomore. he was shot while trying to protect his brother and a female friend during a random robbery in st. louis. >> he's the hero. bobby is the bravest. he has the most courage. >> reporter: police say bobby, his 17-year-old brother, sean, and friend jen were parked near a nightclub after midnight when police say a car pulls up, a man gets out with a handgun and opens a rear door trying to grab jen's purse. she resists and bobby says -- and police say that bobby says something that sets the gunman off. >> at that time the suspect fired a single shot striking that front right passenger seat and the victim in the head. >> reporter: christman only 19, former high school wrestler and rugby playing studying at southeast missouri university and wanted to be a soldier. >> he always devoted his time to help others. >> reporter: a young man so beloved his family says the hospital where he died was overwhelmed with the number of friends that showed up. >> we had so many people that they had to get a security guard to manage the crowd. >> reporter: both sean and jen were too shaken up to speak with us. jen said "i love him so much for everything he did for me and sean that night." >> reporter: police desperate to make sure the killers don't strike again taking a look at a 2004 silver sebring, the suspects allegedly fled in that car during christman's killing. a car they allegedly carjacked on friday. >> they abandoned and ran and because the officers are unfamiliar with the area they lost the suspect but we have the vehicle. >> reporter: killers on the loose and a young life lost too soon. for "good morning america," tom llamas, abc news, new york. >> boy, so scary and so senseless. we're going to turn to that bizarre twist in the case of kurt busch and his ex-girlfriend. busch was in court tuesday calling his ex a trained assassin carrying out missions all around the world. abc's gio benitez has the story. >> reporter: good morning, george. he said his ex would kill people with gun, knives and poison and showed up once wearing a trench coat overan evening dress soaked in blood. >> and the outlaw wins the battle at martinsville. >> reporter: a nascar champion meets a natural born killer? that's part of the bizarre testimony emerging this morning from a family court battle between racing superstar kurt busch and his ex-girlfriend patricia driscoll. 37-year-old driscoll is seeking a protection order against busch, claiming he assaulted her but this week busch testified he was the one in fear claiming she is a quote trained assassin dispatched on covert missions around the world who told him many times about her alleged mercenary work. he says driscoll even told him she and another woman were the inspiration for jessica chastain's character in "zero dark thirty." >> but the truth is you don't understand pakistan and you don't know al qaeda! >> reporter: driscoll is listed working for a company called front line defense systems and is described on their website as having spent the majority of her career in the narcotics and intelligence world. but a paid killer? she says the allegations are ludicrous telling the associated press overnight, that busch must have taken it from a fictional movie script she's been working on, a script she says he helped proofread. driscoll herself took the stand a few weeks ago, claiming busch slammed her head into a wall during an argument last fall. >> we're hoping that the judge finds in favor of miss driscoll. >> reporter: but on tuesday busch and his attorneys once again denying the allegations which are also the subject of an ongoing criminal investigation. >> i'm just glad that the truth got told and that we'll wait on the commissioner's decision. >> reporter: a decision on the protection order is expected by the end of the month. >> and there's more. busch also alleges she took him into the ft. bragg army installation at least a dozen times giving him what he calls red carpet tours, granting access to what are supposed to be private areas. who's telling the truth? >> i'm going in optimistic. >> let's go. you have the perfect outfit for cooking on so ready, three, two, one. go. >> perfect outfit and perfect attitude. we'll check back in a bit. breaking developments in the paris terror attacks. al qaeda claiming responsibility one of the group's senior leaders says al qaeda chose the target financed the operation and appointed its leader. he also claims american radical cleric anwar al awlaki who was killed in 2011 chose the gunmen to carry out that attack. u.s. officials are now analyzing that video frame by frame. there is no hard proof in the video about any of the claims it makes. meanwhile the french lined up before dawn this morning to buy the magazine "charlie hebdo." it is the first edition since the attack on its paris office one week ago. some waited in line for up to six hours as a symbol of resilience. a total of 5 million copies will be printed up from the usual 60,000. the cover features a cartoon of the prophet muhammad. muslim groups have warned the cover will only raise tensions and provoke more anger. nasa now says it was likely a falsely alarm that forced astronauts to evacuate situate one section of the international space station. a sensor showed there was a dangerous ammonia leak. nasa says the crew was not in danger. also breaking overnight new images of what appears to be the fuselage of airasia flight 8501. these pictures were captured by an underwater robot off the coast of indonesia. it's believed most of the passengers and crew are inside that fuselage. and in medical news a new study finds about 10% of people taking aspirin for cardiac health are actually doing themselves more harm than good. researchers warn people with little or no risk of heart attack or stroke should not take the drug because of its side effects which could include stomach bleeding. assault charges have been dropped against hope solo. she was set to go on trial next week for allegedly attacking two family members last summer but the judge dismissed the case after agreeing that solo's half-sister and nephew were being uncooperative. finally, a florida teen is being hailed a hero for saving the life of the police officer who had just arrested him. it was all caught on camera. jamal rutledge was being processed on burglary charges when officer franklin foulks collapsed grasping his chest. rutledge immediately got help and three officers responded and the medical staff is saying that the teen's quick response saved officer foulks' life so next week rutledge will be honored by the city of ft. lauderdale for his actions. he was banging on the fence, the security fence yelling and screaming and officers were able to quickly get in and administer cpr and save his life. awesome story. >> that is a great story. amy, thanks very much. a new study for new parents. its research revealing that naps could play a key role in helping infants learn. abc's dr. richard besser to tell us about it. interesting stuff. >> this is really cool. we're learning so much more about sleep and how it's more than just being well rested. what they looked at here was what naps do in terms of cementing new memory. so they took a group of babies and taught them a new task. they taught them how to take the glove off of a puppet and half of these babies they caught it right before nap time and so they learned this and then they took a nap for at least 30 minutes and half was right after nap time and tested them the following day. only those babies who learned it right before nap time remembered how to do it. >> only? >> only. >> those babies who learned it after nap time. >> wow. >> -- it didn't set or stick as a new memory. >> learn something, nap, it solidifies. >> we think about sleep as being well rested. if you don't sleep you won't be able to get up and perform well. that's important but our brain is reorganizeing while we're sleeping and doing things that are fantastic. if you don't get that good quality sleep you may not be laying down those memories. >> great for babies. how about for all ages. >> here they were just looking at babies but i think it's true for everybody. last night i didn't sleep very well. i'm thinking am i going to remember this segment tomorrow morning. i brought cue cards but i think it's very important for everyone. it's not just about being well rested. we know as people age, they have trouble learning new things and part of that is that they're not getting that high quality sleep. >> love that. one more reason not to feel guilty about a nap. >> exactly. >> okay rich thanks very much. i've become terribly fond of it and i have had every intention of seeing it through. >> jock. >> yes, madam. >> please make up the guest bedroom for mr. mortdecai. >> he said i already have. please welcome gwyneth paltrow back here to our little humble studio. >> thank you. >> always enjoy seeing you. i had so much fun -- i needed that to watch the movie last night. it's escapism and talk about the mustache first. there were like stunt doubles -- not stunt doubles but doubles for the mustache. >> triples and quadruples. in the makeup trailer there were a million lined up. >> johnny depp had something to do with the design of them. >> johnny is like -- he's a true genius and when he works he envisions the whole thing and the music i wants to hear in his trailer and the look so he did the blond and the mustache and it was very funny. >> let's bring everybody up to speed on it. his character is a lovable schemer. you're his wife. clever and everything so what drew you to this role and just tell a little more about it. >> you know i read the script and i thought it was roo really funny. it's a very -- i could see how it was going to be hilarious and stylish and frothy and a real escape and i'd always wanted to work with johnny depp and i am so lucky that they asked me to do it because he is extraordinary and i don't know. it was wonderful. such a great, fun experience. >> how did you not crack up doing some of these scenes? >> i did. i ruined -- there's one scene where he tries to kiss me and i gagged because he has the mustache and i think i ruined like 15 takes. at the end i was squeezing my nails into my hand to stop laughing because he is so funny. >> it just seems like he was going off script a lot. he had to ad-libbing it. i really appreciate your character, gwyneth, you're his wife intelligent, smart, clever and you always seem to be just one step ahead of him, right? >> yes, i mean one of the things that i love about the movie is kind of the metaphor that the mustache is. in the marriage it's kind of like this obstacle they're both trying to make their way around and she's a very clever woman and but she's also really -- loves him so much and is so supportive she's just kind of smarter than he is. >> i love the ending. i don't want to give it away but cute there in the tub. you've always been very strong and very outspoken. a beautiful cover story that you did for "harper's bazaar" magazine and said in essence sometimes women, we can be our own worst enemy. how do we get beyond that and stop that from happening? >> it's tough. in a lot of ways i feel our culture sets us up to make us competitive and to pit us against one another and i think, you know essentially to be feminine is to be loving of other women and forgiving of ourselves and the more that we forgive ourself, the more loving we can be of other women because there's not projection and jealousy which i've suffered from. we all have. it's all part of it but, you know the older that i get, the more that i see how important it is you know it's like my women friends have had my whole life and they're the relationships that see you through. you know women are just so important to one another. >> yeah they're always there right there by you. you are so dedicated to this. i saw you watching the pinterest segment. you always like looking for little tips but do you have any major projects later for that? >> we do. we have a very exciting 2015 coming up at the website we have. we're doing our own little line of clothing like capsule collection of clothing and other exciting projects we'll be announceing soon so it's been a lot of fun if we ran out of time. we were going to do a goop gap and had some really good questions. it just want to ask one. what's your number one go to kids' dinner. >> number one is probably like tortilla guacamole, black bean rice. >> you got a couple -- you can never miss with that. >> no never. takes ten minutes and it's great. >> go right to it. gwyneth, thank you very much. >> thank you so much for having me. >> great year ahead, 2015. that's what we were joking about coming out. very excited about the new year.
