Right now as Police Search for a man they say opened fire on a patrol car overnight. Just missing two officers as people are warned to stay inside. We are living in a Material World and madonna expressing herself online. The Material Girl firing off an angry rant after her new songs leaked preaching about women sticking together, but is her new track really taking aim at her rival lady gaga . And i am a Material Girl good morning, america. We have a lot to get to this morning beginning with that search for the missing plane. Its hard to believe this is the third Major Airline disaster this year. Yeah, a disturbing sense of deja vu this morning. Heres what we know right now, day two of the search operation is now over with no major breakthroughs, unfortunately. Dozens of ships and planes from at least four countries are helping to look for any sign of the missing jet and the search area expanding overnight now broken up into seven different zones. Take a look at the map of the planes route going down in the java sea less than an hour after takeoff. Abcs david kerley starts us off in washington with the very latest. David, good morning. Reporter good morning, amy. That search area something go to be expanded even further tomorrow, another four zones added but darkness has fallen. The Aerial Search completed until their morning. With the grim prediction today that this jetliner and all on board are lost. This morning, a first full day of searching for airasia flight 8501 with an indonesian official now saying they quote, currently suspect the plane is located on the ocean floor. Today the search area grew. Yesterday what was described as four sections, today seven sections searched with more assets arriving. The indonesians joined by malaysia and australia and more on the way. It was just after 5 30 sunday morning that the nearly full airbus a320 jetliner took off from indonesias surabaya airport heading northwest to singapore but over over the java sea, the jetliner encounters heavy weather and turbulence. The pilot radioing in at 6 12 saying he wants to turn to go around the weather and climb significantly from 32,000 feet to 38,000 feet. That is his last contact. Five minutes later, the jetliner disappears off indonesian radar screens. On board 162 mostly indonesians. This lowcost carrier has been around for more than a decade. It has a good safety record. The pilot was experienced. This incident just nine months after the malaysian flight 370 disappeared over the indian ocean, but there is a notable difference. If flight 8501 did go down, it likely would have fallen into the java sea, a much smaller area than the indian ocean and much shallower body of water giving searchers a better chance of finding the aircraft. The prospects of finding the black boxes in the java sea is very good. Its close to land, there are a lot of ships that can be brought to bear on it and only 30day life in the battery i think they can find it within that time. Reporter you need to get close to the debris an earlier today an oil slick was spotted and some debris. Both were picked up out of the ocean and will be tested. There was word of pings but the indonesians have dispelled those and say theyre not connected. Singapore is the best equipped country in this area. Its offered listening device an offer now accepted so those will be put in the water and listen for the pingers of the black boxes. A lot more work to be done. Thank you. This is, of course, an agonizing time for the families of those on board that plane. Crisis centers have been set up at both of the airports where people are now waiting and crying and praying, and abcs terry moran has spent time with some of these families in singapore. Terry, good morning to you. Reporter good morning, dan or good evening from here. Singapores airport terminal 2 just over there behind those officers. That is where the grim vigil continues. Desperate, anxious family members awaiting word of their loved ones aboard flight 8501 still there, still hoping against hope. All day relatives rushed to the airport here in surabaya, indonesia, where the plane took off from and now this may be the hardest time for them, the waiting. We do trust the airline, yes, but its life. We dont know whats going to happen. Reporter more than 36 hours have passed since the last contact from the airasia flight since so many souls simply vanished over those stormtossed seas. A young woman, she was expecting her fiance and five members of his family joining her for a vacation. Yeah it was supposed to be their last vacation before us got married. It was supposed to be his last vacation with his family. Reporter airasia officials, they were struggling with the horror of it too. The founder of the airline, which has a good safety record, tweeted this is my Worst Nightmare and he later pledged his support. Theres a deep sense of depression here, but well stay strong and we our First Priority now is to look after the families and do whatever we can. Reporter those families, they can only wait and pray. There were the lucky ones. 23 people were scheduled to be on this flight but missed it including a family of ten who arrived at the airport in indonesia too late and were saved. One of those family members said, maybe it was just gods plan. Amy. All right, terry, thanks so much. And lets bring in abc news aviation consultant colonel Steve Ganyard in washington, and, steve, this is the second missing plane near malaysia. Many are duping it the pacific bermuda triangle. What do you think could have happened . Its it you have to say, amy. One of the things the biggest mystery here is that the radar data itself showed that at 32,000 feet the aircraft just disappeared. So you would think that if the crew had lost control, maybe as theyd come down, there would have been some additional radar hits there to say, hey, the aircraft is descending but it just disappeared at 32,000 feet. And, steve we theres very few things that could do that and it could be weather related but highly unlikely or a bomb but it just doesnt make sense that an airplane would disappear at 32,000 feet. Right. Many officials are pointing to the Stormy Weather in the area. In fact, the pilots last communication with the tower was asking to go above 32,000 feet. He was denied that request because of another aircraft. You dont believe weather was a factor. Why . I think weather will be a factor, amy. I think at the end it may have been a contributing factor. Maybe it led to a loss of control, maybe it led to some other catastrophic event, but i think right now everything is open. We have to keep every possibility open. We have to think about everything that could have happened to this jet and cant just focus on weather and that means finding the wreckage, finding that black box, reading the tapes and figuring out what really happened. And it sounds as though the Recovery Efforts might be a little easier than what we saw with 370 because of the java sea, correct . Yes, just because its surrounded by land, its not the vast, open ocean that we know out to the west of australia where theyre looking for the other missing airplane. Its also fairly shallow so if its shallower it will be easier to get listening devices and those things down into the water once we get a general area but certainly as david reported, not encouraging that the box theyre looking in is expanding rather than contracting. At this point youd be hoping that theyd be narrowing that search area but thats not the case and we have another day and another day towards the end of the life of that battery so, again, just like 370, the clock is ticking and weve got 28 days left to find that airplane. All right, colonel ganyard, thanks so much for that insight but certainly just such a scary reminder of what can happen and the fact that weve had two in just a years time is obviously very frightening for so many air travelers. They are running out of time to find answers. We move on to another disaster unfolding right now, a packed ferry with nearly 500 people on board caught fire in rough waters between greece and italy. Exhausted rescue teams have been working through the night to airlift all of those people off the doomed ship and abcs Hamish Macdonald is here now with the very latest. Hamish, good morning to you. Reporter dan, good morning to you. We are getting some very good news in right now and that is that all of the passengers are now safely off this ferry. The only people remaining on board, the captain and some of the crew members. Theyre there to continue facilitating this ongoing rescue operation. This morning, a race against time to save hundreds stranded aboard a burning ferry in rough seas for more than 30 hours. These are the latest pictures showing rescue teams battling high winds lifting frightened and freezing passengers off the deck of the norman atlantic. Italian officials now say everyone apart from the captain and crew has been taken off the ship including this pregnant woman and her two small children. This video filmed by a passenger on board and obtained by an Italian News Agency shows flames engulfing the ships interior as he waits outside for help. The massive fire broke out on the ships car deck before dawn on sunday. Partway through its journey from patras to ancona in italy and passengers are huddled on the upper deck amid rain, hail and suffocating smoke waiting to be rescued. Some are reportedly suffering hypothermia, and one man died after jumping overboard. Were outside, says one frantic passenger passenger, were very cold. The ship is full of smoke. This survivor adding that the floors started collapsing from the heat. Passengers say that as they tried to get to the lifeboats below deck, their shoes melted because of that heat. But the first large group of survivors rescued by this cargo ship is now back on dry land. Well, the death toll now stands at five and italian prosecutors are already launching a formal criminal investigation into what happened here. For those passengers now moving to dry land though dan and amy, they will be very relieved that this journey is almost over. Hamish, thank you. And so Many American tourists take ships like that all the time and really scary story. And weather seemingly contributing to so much of this and now we have more weather news here back at home. A blast of cold air thats going to hit most of the country as we all get ready to ring in the new year, and ginger, of course, is tracking it all with Winter Wonderland behind you. Yes. How about snow in the Las Vegas Strip for new years eve. How does that sound . Its happened before but want to start you off in western montana. We begin in los angeles where people in one part of the city have been warned to stay inside as Police Search for a man who they say opened fire on a Police Patrol car missing two officers. Now, hes considered armed and dangerous. Another suspect is in custody and the officers have recovered a rifle. Police across the country have been on edge after two new York City Police officers were murdered in their squad car this month. And one of those new york officers was laid to rest this weekend. During the funeral many officers turned their back on the mayor when he spoke. Protesting his recent comments which they say have fueled racial tensions, but the nypd commissioners smokeout on sunday calling the officers actions very inappropriate. A surfer is recovering at a california hospital after being dragged underwater by a great white shark. He was bitten on the hip by the juvenile shark believed to be ten feet long. The teeth marks clearly visible, you see there, on the mans surfboard and beaches in Central California but warning signs have been posted. Lava flying from mt. Kilauea volcano are creeping closer to a Shopping Center on the big island. The molten rock advancing 25 yards in just 2 days just half a mile from a major intersection but Authorities Say the lava seen here stopping just short of a recycling center does not pose any immediate threat to residents. He battled subzero temperatures, at wolverine at his heels and rescue choppers that flew right past him but his will to live endured above all. This helicopter rescuing 34yearold Craig Johnson from a nightmare in alaska. Somebody up there watching me. Reporter johnson still in disbelief he made it out alive after his snowmobile fell through a frozen sea in northern alaska while traveling to see his family. I crawled up the bank. I was watching. Every time i stepped you could hear water in my boots. Reporter his clothes frozen, his lung punctured and temperature 35 degrees below zero. He trekked 30 miles looking for help. A father of two boys desperate and determined not to end up like his father who he says drowned after falling through the ice in 1998. Its just my will to survive, you know. I just learned to live off the land, you know. Reporter johnson then facing another unbelievable challenge. A wolverine. I didnt panic or anything. I just kept going. My heart didnt want to stop. Reporter the ferocious animal chasing him, johnson finding protection in this wooden box. Searchers now trying to find him but the choppers flying right past him. When they just passed right by me i just i just couldnt stop crying. When i was out there when it passed by me, i lost all hope and i just laid back down in that box i was in and it just felt like it was an open grave for me. Reporter after three days alone in the wilderness one searcher, johnsons cousin hearing his cries. I couldnt even scream but somehow something inside me made me scream at him to tell him im right here. Reporter johnson is recovering from his injuries. On how he survived the unthinkable his cousin says they are alaska tough. So true. Dan and amy. Wow. To see his emotion, he was so happy and loved seeing that Christmas Tree behind him. He gets the moment and what he lived through. Im so happy that he is well, i cant imagine that situation. Hes not just alaska tough, hes tough by any standards. Absolutely. Weather. More than a dozen planes and ships and more are on the way. There are secrets to cook it to perfection and abcs becky worley is on the case. Reporter its the first rule of cooking meat from the freezer. You got to defrost it. We have a brandnew way to handle frozen steaks. Reporter they say not only can you cook it without thawing it but it tastes better that way. We prefer that hands down. Reporter what . Cooking straight out of the freezer . No you have to thaw it. Okay i get strip steaks and cut them in half and i freeze them. And then into a ziploc. They say this prevents moisture and ice then i take one steak out the night before to thaw and now the unthinkable. Frozen steak going directly into the pan. Cooks illustrated did their test browning them in oil. Looking good very brown. 90 seconds each side and putting them no a 275degree oven until the internal temperature reached 15 degrees. Frozen steak is 57 degrees at its center. The frozen steak took almost twice as long to cook. Lets compare the two. This is the thawed piece right here and see these big gray bands, now look over here at the one cooked from frozen. You get a much juiceier pinker center. It it tasted a lot bet ever than the one that was thawed but would cooks their take in oil and then in the oven . Does this trick work on the barbecue . Same deal. Thawed steak here. Frozen steak here and thats fire. This one is going to be 156 degrees. Maybe thats one reason to cook from frozen. Youre less likely to burn it to a crisp. Okay so i can conduct a taste test. It took another few minutes to reach medium rare and the result a lot of moisture. Good taste. Who knew . The Mountain Lion by the way is a solitary cat. An african lion is very social. Some of the greatest leaping ability. 30 to 40 feet. Yeah i know but one thing remember something, you dont want to go out in your backyard and ever pick up a skunk. Why am i holding one. They can carry rabies. This one doesnt. Im not making sense. What im trying to tell you dont want to handle any of these animals. Dont try this at home. We do this for education. Skunks are brought to us. You dont know all the skunks. Wildlife center and educate schools about kids about going out in the yard. You know how they are. I was the same way in tennessee. I never knew it could carry rabies. The minute you bring it into the home the animal has to stay in that situation for a lifetime because it doesnt know to go out in the wild. Theres a skunk festival. Okay, thats got to be one smelly situation probably. Wait. When do they release the squint. As long as that tail is that way tail down. Keep the tail down dahlia.
