they did. >> i'm so happy with them. also ah >> we begin with that cyberattack on j.p. morgan chase. with a bank this big it raises big questions about the safety of personal accounts and national security. abc's chief justice correspondent pierre thomas is tracking it from washington. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, george. today one of the nation's biggest banks has been hacked and this morning the fbi and the secret service are investigating. law enforcement sources tell abc news federal agents are investigating a potential major breach of j.p. morgan chase's computers and those of at least one other major financial institution. investigators are trying to determine whether sensitive customer account information is among what was compromised. company and government officials declined to offer specifics but last night the fbi released a statement saying it and the secret service were working to determine the scope of recently reported cyberattacks against several financial institutions. one official told abc news that when a bank the size of j.p. morgan chase is targeted, it's not just considered a financial crime but also potentially a national security matter. investigators will look to see whether organized crime rings were involved and whether the attack originated in russia. so far the bank is not seeing any unusual fraud activity but i'm sure customers want to know exactly what was hacked. >> no question about that. okay, pierre, thanks very much. now to monster storms on both coasts causing massive waves and dangerous rip currents. ginger fracing ajinginger track. busy weekend for you, ginger. >> yeah, this only happens about once per decade for a lot of these folks in southern california, that's why you got the people watching and look at this video. what happens when you're watching. and it crashes right over the edge. yes, some of the waves reportedly up to 20 feet high, of course, surfers taking advantage but lifeguards having to pull several people out of the water and now we're looking for that storm that has been causing -- you can see that surfer just clicking off the top there. watch this. that storm that has been calling all of the large swells, marie, now a tropical storm. it is still weakening but as we get closer to land we still have a high surf advisory for some waves reaching 10 to still 15 feet so the threat not over. on the east coast you know we've been talking about this and already have seen two deaths due to rip currents. even though you want to enjoy the holiday weekend early here's the timing for you. as that storm pulls away we will see some rough surf. dangerous rip currents improving today in the southeast and here in the northeast, new england, waves as big as ten feet. >> okay, thanks, ginger. the latest on the american journalist held hostage by isis militants. the mother of steven sotloff recording an emotional plea appealing to the leader asking him in the name of islam to release her son. abc's brian ross is tracking this story. he joins us now. good morning, brian. >> reporter: good morning, and this morning steve sotloff's mother awaits word on whether her emotional plea to save her son's life had any impact at all on his captors. >> i am shirley sotloff. my son, steven, is in your hands. >> reporter: the mother's last-ditch plea came eight days after isis publicly threatened to kill her 31-year-old journalist son if the usair strikes continued, as they have. >> steven has no control over the actions of the u.s. government. he's an innocent abc news it has demonstrated a sophisticated and well thought-out plan for establishing its own islamic caliphate state across syria and iraq. now they're using drones to gather overhead intelligence on targets and have captured a wide range of advanced military equipment and munitions, much of it left behind by the u.s. officials say isis is now much more than the ragtag terror group it was just a few years ago. and this morning u.s. officials tell abc news they are working to confirm new reports out of syria that yet another american has been killed fighting for isis, george. >> we know that so many westerners and americans have gone over there to fight and the concern not only will they fight there but try to bring an attack back home. >> what they call the clean skin, be able to get in we begin with some breaking news. what is being called a full-scale invasion, reports this morning that russia is sending more troops across the border of ukraine in two locations just hours after the obama administration voiced concern about moscow's unwillingness to tell the truth about its intentions. abc's lama hasan is following it, good morning, lama. >> reporter: good morning to you, amy. this morning ukraine is admitting its troops are retreating and russian forces are now in control of southeast ukraine. as you can see in this new video coming in, the explosion of violence on the streets. the ukrainian president is canceling a trip to turkey because of what he describes a russian invasion, ukraine accusing russia of opening a new front in the conflict. abc news has spoken with a ukrainian defense ministry spokesman who confirmed to us at least 5,000 russian forces are now fighting and supporting the rebels, convoys of hundreds of vehicles and armored personnel carriers have been rolling into ukraine over the last few days. now, ukraine's president has just called an urgent meeting of his security council to decide how to respond. amy. >> all right, lama, thank you very much. we'll follow this situation all morning long. in the meantime, new details in the search for malaysia airlines flight 370 missing for nearly six months. authorities are refining that search area in the indian ocean after analyzing an attempted satellite phone call from the plane. today leaders agreed to a year-long search. meanwhile, after the recent disasters many malaysia airline flights have been virtually empty. the company is set to announce major job cuts. a big explosion at this bp oil refinery near chicago shaking homes for miles. you can see the flames pouring from the facility. the blast has been traced back to a compressor, thankfully no one was injured. and the sister of the boston marathon bombing suspects is in trouble with the law accused of making a bomb threat. police in new york say ailina tsarnaev called the mother of her boyfriend's children this week saying "i have people that can put a bomb on you." she is charged with aggravated harassment. a seattle man caught on camera stealing this suv with a baby girl inside. the father had left the engine running while he stopped at the store. he saw what was happening, ran outside and tried to disable the suv with his remote key even trying a foot chase but the thief got away. it took about an hour but police finally caught the suspect and that little girl is okay. thankfully. well, a new lawsuit is aimed at protecting youth and pro soccer players from head injuries. a group of parents and players filing suit against organizations that oversee the sport. they're demanding rules be changed to limit head butting and require more medical testing. finally, think you're having a bad hair day. take a look at what happened to tennis star caroline wozniacki at the u.s. open. she tries to return a shot and her hair actually gets caught in the racket. >> oh, no. she didn't give up on the play, though. she still tried to hit the ball. she said if felt like her head was about to come off. i can see why. she went on to win in straight sets and later she said, it was just one of those things, we women, we keep it interesting. it's one way to look at it. i love she still tried to hit turn to the latest on usc football star josh shaw. earlier he claimed he sprained his ankles trying to save his nephew from drowning. now he admits he made that story up. abc's linsey davis is here with the latest on it, good morning, linsey. >> reporter: good morning, lara. earlier this week, he was hailed a hero. this morning he is being called a liar and says the elaborate and daring rescue of his nephew was a complete fabrication. >> and josh shaw. >> reporter: this morning usc cornerback and team captain josh shaw is suspended indefinitely from the team after admitting he lied about how he ended up with two sprained ankles over the weekend. >> it was so out of character for him. he was the kid who always did everything right. >> reporter: on monday, the 22-year-old football player was praised as a hero after telling the school he jumped from a second story apartment saturday to rescue his 7-year-old nephew from drowning. but the very next day, speculation he lied. >> we've gotten a few phone calls contradicting what josh said occurred saturday night so we're going to continue to vet it. >> reporter: but when shaw's sister spoke to us she jumped to his defense saying she wasn't there at the time but believes shaw did rescue her son. >> my child is safe and it's because of josh. >> reporter: by late wednesday shaw came clean in a statement released by his attorney. i injured myself in a fall. i made up a story about this fall that was untrue. i was wrong to not tell the truth. i apologize to usc. >> he shouldn't have lied about it but he's a captain here. we should stand by him as a school. >> reporter: now another twist, the lapd releasing a statement saying shaw was mentioned but not named a suspect in a break-in at an apartment building the same night he claimed to be rescuing his nephew. witnesses described a black male with dreadlocks leaving the apartment balcony. the report says. mr. shaw is listed as the victim's boyfriend who happened to have a similar description of the suspect leaving the apartment. no suspects have been arrested. the investigation is still ongoing. his attorney says nothing was criminal. the biggest question that looms out there is why did he make up such an intricate lie? >> so the trojans will start their season this weekend without one of their starters. the coach did say he hopes josh will not be defined by this incident and that the trojan family will accept his apology and support him. george? >> thanks. abc's chief legal affairs anchor dan abrams is here, you said yesterday it was a strange story. >> and now we're being able to piece together a little better what actually happened. we know he lied. put aside the whole story about the 7-year-old nephew for a moment. here's what we know. the authorities get a report in downtown los angeles of a woman screaming, possible burglary. they show up. they're directed to an apartment complex. they go to an apartment complex. they end up interviewing a woman who seems to have been shaw's girlfriend. shaw's girlfriend identifies a person out on a balcony near where a window had been pried open as matching a description of someone who matches shaw. shaw's own lawyer puts him there at that apartment complex saying that is where he fell from a balcony so now we know forget all the business about his nephew and a swimming pool, et cetera. even his own lawyer is now admitting that the fall occurred at an apartment complex where there had been some sort of incident that night. >> so what kind of legal exposure does he have now, breaking and entering. >> we have to be careful. we don't know he was involved in that. you can lie about the police, but you get in trouble if you lie to the police. right? big difference there. so if he just lied about what happened and, you know, he was declared a hero by usc and by the media, that's just incredibly embarrassing and an issue that comes up with usc. he's being suspended from the team, et cetera. the problem for him would occur if he was questioned by the police. >> well, so that's the question. if he went out and told the story it's not a legal matter but if the police came and questioned him -- >> that's the fundamental line as to where he could get in real trouble versus just, you know, a little bit of trouble. in the meantime, he's suspended from the team. >> that's right, indefinitely. >> dan abrams, thanks very much. all right. we want to move now to a health alert about dangerous water in one louisiana community. a potentially deadly amoeba has been found in the water supply for thousands of people and abc's steve osunsami has the story. >> reporter: this morning, a deadly brain-eating amoeba often found in warm ponds and lakes is now tainting the drinking water of nearly 13,000 people in st. john the baptist parish, louisiana. >> the problem is making sure you keep precautions to keep it from going up your nose. >> reporter: health officials are warning residents to keep water from getting into their noses while swimming or bathing and telling parents to keep a close eye on children playing with hoses or sprinklers. >> it finds itself way back in our noses and then can work its way into our central nervous system around our brains and once it's there it just causes destruction. >> reporter: the amoeba breeds in warm standing bodies of water, even a pool that's poorly chlorinated. infections are rare but almost always fatal. today officials will begin a chlorine burn to clear the water but that will take them 60 days. >> we're taking every step necessary to relieve that threat. >> reporter: last month haley yust died from a brain-eating amoeba. she was a waterskier. over the years, 130 reported cases and only 3 people sur vied. kali hardig was one of them hospitalized for nine weeks after contracting the disease in an arkansas water park. >> i was real sick. i was scared, believe me. >> reporter: for "good morning >> yes. >> that's the answer. then there's deejay d-nice here to spin records for the final showdown in our epic dance-off daddy/daughter edition. look at them, they're warming up getting their groove on. the last two teams standing of the you're right, they do got it. >> you can't pick one. >> that's coming up. we'll begin with that tragic accident during a filming of the popular reality show "cops." a crew member caught in the crossfire and killed during a police shootout and abc's mara schiavocampo here with the story. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. police work is dangerous and that can sometimes put the crew of the show "cops" at risk. and now for the first time in the show's more than two decades on the air, a crew member has been killed. ♪ bad boys what you gonna do >> reporter: for 25 years the television show "cops" has given viewers a gritty firsthand look at crime on the streets. but that danger all too real this morning after "cops" crew member bryce deion was killed during filming of a police shootout for an upcoming episode of the show in omaha, nebraska. police frantically calling for help moments after the 38-year-old audio technician is shot. >> one of the "cops" guys has been hit by gunfire. we need a squad here now. >> reporter: it all started with a reported armed robbery in this wendy's restaurant tuesday night. police say these images show 32-year-old cortez washington holding a gun. >> he just kept telling me hurry up, hurry up, hurry up, the whole time having the gun pointed at me. >> reporter: when police arrive deion and another "cops" crew member are with them filming every tense moment. police say washington fired first but when officers shot back, they say deion got caught in the cross fire. deion trapped inside this glass doorway struck by a single bullet. >> it came in the left arm and slipped in between the vest where there is an open area. >> reporter: this video reveals the hectic moments just after the shooting. emergency crews trying to revive deion. but both he and washington would die from their injuries. >> when you're reporting police work and riding along with us, unfortunately you subject yourself to that same level of violence that omaha police officers do every day. >> hey. >> reporter: "cops" has been filming in omaha all summer and was set to finish shooting this week. >> we've never had an incident like this. it's a very sad day for us. >> reporter: now, as it turns out that robbery suspect's gun was an air pistol that fires only plastic pellets. still, police say witnesses reported seeing that man fire directly at the officers and they say the footage that deion helped film in his dying moments shows just that. such a sad story. the guy was just doing his job. >> okay, thanks very much. >> so tragic. now we turn to the trial of the texas father accused of gunning down a drunk driver who killed his two young sons. after less than one day of deliberation, david barajas was acquitted by a jury on all charges. abc's ryan owens has the story. >> reporter: applause greeting david barajas after the 32-year-old father is acquitted of killing the man who killed his sons. >> a lot of weight lifted off my back. i'm still destroyed. i'm missing my sons, always and forever. >> reporter: even barajas seems stunned. it took the texas jury three hours wednesday, to find him not guilty of shooting jose banda, the drunk driver who hit and killed his 11 and 12-year-old sons. >> i pray for my family. i pray for the banda family that god gives then the comfort and the strength to move forward, you know, they lost a son too. >> reporter: it was 2012 when barajas and his sons were pushing their truck down this street south of houston after they ran out of gas. investigators say banda hit the boys right in front of their father. >> did the kid got run over? >> yes, he is bleeding badly. he is badly hurt. >> okay. is he breathing? >> i don't know. it's fatal. >> reporter: that's when investigators say an enraged barajas ran home to grab a gun and execute the 20-year-old drunk driver on the spot. prosecutors thought it was vigilante justice. an unlawful eye for an eye. >> we believe that mr. barajas committed this crime. >> reporter: with no witnesses and no gun found, the jury didn't buy it. from day one, barajas maintained someone else fired that shot. >> we're not sure who killed mr. banda but somebody killed mr. banda. and it wasn't mr. barajas. >> i'm happy. i can move forward with my life. i can start closure for me. i can proceed with things that i wanted to do in life with my family. >> reporter: justice for a young father who prosecutors still insist took the law into his own hands and now got away with it. for "good morning america," ryan owens, abc news, dallas. >> ryan, we thank you. dan abrams is here for more on this. we heard in the piece that barajas seemed stunned by the verdict. were you surprised by it? >> no. for two reasons, first of all, there's the lack of evidence, right. there's the fact that they don't find the weapon. there's the fact there are no eyewitnesses, et cetera. but you combine that with the sympathy for the defendant so if you got jurors back there who are saying to themselves, well, it sure looks like he did it. it sure seems like he did it. he sure seems like the obvious person to have done it and yet they say wait a second. we're not convicting this guy on this -- with these facts on this evidence. it's those two things together, i think, that made this a relatively easy call. three hours of deliberation. >> yeah. just three mohours. >> the prosecution was calling it vigilante justice. what was their strongest evidence to that point? >> the strongest evidence, he was seen leaving -- his home was a hundred yards away. he's seen leaving the scene and then coming back. he said he didn't own a gun and yet they found a holster and ammunition at his home that was potentially consistent with the weapon that was used here. that was the most important piece of evidence in this case. but without more and the sympathy for the defendant, this was a really hard -- this is one of these cases where that beyond a reasonable doubt standard really means a lot because i bet you if you asked all these jurors do you think he did it, probably all of them would say probably but that's not enough to convict him. but that's not enough to convict him. >> sad all around. >> horrible, horrible. >> dan abrams, thank you so much. we want to turn now to ginger with the latest on the weather. ginger, you are a busy woman this morning. >> yes, indeed. air quality alert is where we start in atlanta. they'll go to 92. look at this live shot. looks pretty but if you're one of those people that have some sort of -- any sensitivity to those ozone qualities watch out today. you're around 70. now you'll go to 92. it will be a little bit of that oppressive heat, the steamy stuff staying to the south of that front we were talking about before. slightly rain cooled right along the coast from new orleans to corpus christi. 94 for birmingham 96 for memphis. a quick check of the southwest, though, heating up and staying relatively dry as we go through at least the first part of this weekend. look at the numbers. 110 in palm springs getting a little extra august in there. compared to what will be today. good morning, i'm mike nicco. we're going to get plenty of sunshine. 84 to 95 up north. 66 to 72, 74 to 84 around the bay. accuweather seven-da >> you know who has had a warm summer? well, even a local police department does not have an answer. >> oh, i am scared to death now. >> reporter: it's the video that is sparking rumors of extraterrestrial life all shot on stephanie wilkerson's cell phone. >> oh, did you see that. >> reporter: wilkerson says she was relaxing on her porch monday night when the unidentified flying object caught her eye. >> i thought it was a plane until i realized it wasn't moving and i watched it for about 20 minutes and i started noticing it changing colors. >> reporter: that's when she ran for her phone and called over a neighbor. >> he went and got his binoculars because he first thought it was a planet and then he said, no, its changed yellow. that is not a planet. >> reporter: so she called 911. >> look at that. look at that. >> reporter: but even police were dumbfounded. >> he went there and apparently he saw them too so he called his sergeant and his corporal to come to verify what he was seeing. >> reporter: so police called the national guard training center and the local airports to find out if they could account for any aircraft activity in the area. they couldn't. >> this is unbelievable. >> reporter: this isn't the first ufo sighting in recent weeks. in july, this questionable object was spotted as firefighters battle a wildfire in canada and just two weeks ago these photos were posted all over twitter convincing many that the illuminated round disk was something extraterrestrial while some just don't buy it. one photo suggesting it was a reflection of this lamppost. back in pennsylvania wilkerson says she says these lights prove we are not alone. >> i'm now a believer in ufos. >> the whole neighborhood getting involved here. listen to this. stephanie says this is not a fluke, she saw the light again last night and frankly is now a little freaked out. another neighbor also saw it last week. so any guesses?
