Now, there are barriers up this morning as marines are keeping everyone at a safe distance. But if we zoom in behind me, you can see the wreckage and the crater that was left from that jet that fell from the sky. It was on a Training Mission in yuma, arizona. Three homes destroyed here. And yet, everyone is okay. Get out of the way. Get out. Get out of the way. Reporter these were the panicked moments overnight. Airplane just crashed on the block. Reporter just after the fiery crash of a military jet in this imperial, california, neighborhood, as stunned neighbors watched on. I can just see it comes towards me. And then, it just completely nosedives. The pilot, ejected before impact. Out of the plume of smoke, the parachute comes out. And hes way up there. But hes just coming straight down already. You can see him here. Parachute still attached, as residents rush to help. Incredibly, his injuries were minor. Perhaps even more incredible, everyone on the ground survived, as well, including marina mendavel, whose home caught fire after the crash, along with two others. My husband was trapped this there. We didnt know how to get out of there. There was pieces of jet and fire all over the house. But at that moment, i didnt know what hit us. Reporter firefighters seen here fighting back flames, evacuating the entire block. This type of jet is known as a hairier, capable of hovering like a helicopter, and then blasting forward like a jet. The cause of the crash, now under investigation. Now, just across the street from where there plane crashed, a park where children play. There was debris scattered around this park. He is dressed like rambo. Police say hes already killed three of their own. This morning, a canadian city, essentially on lockdown. Two School Districts are closed. Public transportation has been canceled. This, as a desperate manhunt continues. Do you see him . Oh, my god. Call 911. Reporter listen as the horror unfolds. A crazed gunman opening fire, in a quiet, suburban neighborhood, not far from the main border. Residents watching from their living rooms, terrified. Oh, my god. Reporter the seemingly random rampage in the canadian city of moncton, new brunswick, forcing many to hide in their homes where many remain this morning as the manhunt continues. We ran into the house and ducked under the windows. Reporter the suspected gunman, 24yearold justin bourque, seen here roaming one neighborhood, looking ramboesque. Wearing camouflage, and armed with at least two guns. Terrified residents called police, but when officers arrived, the real karnage began. Call 911. Three of our cmp officers were shot and killed. Reporter police say bourque opened fire, killing three of their own. One vanessa watched helplessly from her window. We started banging out the window, telling the guy to turn around. Turn around. When he turned around, it was too late. Thats when the shooter shot him and he was dead. Reporter a police spokesperson, unable to contain his emotions as he warned the city to take cover. He, himself, wearing a bulletproof vest. At this moment, we are still actively looking for the shooter. Reporter this morning, with the gunman still on the loose, the city has all but shut down. Closing public offices, schools and public transportation, with officials telling residents, stay home. Stay safe. Now, the city of moncton did not have a single homicide all last year. And none this year until this horrible rampage. Its been named the most polite city in canada. Needless to stay, a morning like no other for those frightened folks. Hundreds of firefighters on the scene of this massive fire in new york city. The flames spreading so quickly, desperate residents were forced to throw their children out of the window. It is a miracle no one was killed. 200 new york city firefighters raced to the scene on Staten Island around 1 00 a. M. And they found five homes engulfed in flames. 11 people trapped inside. One man tossed his child out of the window into the arms of a neighbor. Firefighters had to rescue six children and five adults. Two women, passed out from the smoke, had to be carried out by firefighters. Now, 22 firefighters were injured in this fight, as well. Not so familiar, a secretly shot video gone viral of the president working out in a hotel gym in warsaw. The video was shot on cell phone by this man. Others in the gym were taking pictures, as well. The video shows president obama listening to music, doing lunges, flies, stepups, working his biceps, and even yawning between sets before hitting the elliptical. The president wasnt alone in the marriott gym, surrounded not only by secret service, but hotel guests working out right alongside him. One of them shot this video, which has been posted online on tmz, the daily mail, polish news outlets and hundreds of other websites. We cracked obamas security, says the screaming headline on one polish newspaper. The secret service says there was no breach of security. That agents were alongside the president during his workout. And that the hotel guests had all been screened before entering the hotel. It isnt the secret services job to ask people to refrain from taking photographs. Impromptu activities like this arent unusual. Like other president s before him, obama frequently makes unscheduled stops. Just last month, surprising tourists on the national mall. Working out in a hotel gym on the road is nothing new for president obama. Hes done it hundreds of times. Its something he does virtually every time he is traveling. But, george, this appears to be the first time that soak has both a shot, and posted a video of the president ial workout. Im surprised its taken that long, jon. The president is heading to france tonight for the dday celebrations tomorrow. And the United States chilly relationship with russia, making for complicated choreography tonight. Experts carefully analyzing the talibans propaganda tape, looking for clues of what the exchange may reveal about bergdahl and his captors. Martha raddatz is joining us from washington with the latest on all this. Good morning, martha. Reporter good morning, robin. The video reveals fascinating detail about the prisoner swap, the possible relationship between bergdahl and his captors and the remarkable security free cautions taken to make sure it all went smoothly. With armed taliban fighters perched on a hillside, bergdahl sits dazed and expressionless below, inside a small pickup. But take a closer look. In the back, blankets, which the former vice chairman of the joint chiefs of staff say it may have been where bergdahl was hidden for the ride. They could have been used to cover him up. He could have been bound. And you can see him blinking his eyes and clearing his eyes with his hands, that he was not used to the light. Didnt really know where he was. Reporter at the helicopters approach, a taliban fighter leans close to bergdahl. And in pastu, warns him, dont come back to afghanistan, you will not make it out alive. Next time. But retired marine corps colonel, steve ganyard, sees more in that moment. Its not threatening. The taliban pats him fairly gently. Like, you and i have been together for a long time. I dont want to kill you next time youre here. Reporter the hood of the taliban truck is raised, likely so the helicopter can spot the correct vehicles. And we see a 41 on the side of the helicopter, likely a signal to the taliban. And that handoff, the American Team approaches. We see the man in the center do a patdown. What hes doing is looking for a suicide vest, something that would potentially make bergdahl a human bomb. Reporter watch how straight these mens arms stay. One even shaking hands with his left hand. Clearly holding on to something hidden. Theyve obviously got some kind of weapon, if they need to shoot across each other, theyre ready to go in case theres an ambush. Reporter a Swift Exchange with no one hurt. But back on capitol hill, theyre still reeling. Would we release Khalid Sheikh mohammed to get him back . You have to look at the big picture here. Reporter and we have learned that secretary of defense chuck hagel will testify on the hill next week about the prisoner exchange, which is when bergdahl is now expected to be returning to the United States. But not to a celebration. Bergdahls hometown of haley, idaho, has canceled a big welcome home celebration, due to security concerns. Robin . Thats right. First, new information on the disturbing case out of wisconsin, where two girls are charged with luring a friend into the woods and trying to stab her to death, all inspired by a fantasy character on the internet. Friends that stayed in class, every day students. Five days after the stabbing, the question still remains, what went wrong . This morning, a small wisconsin town, still reeling at the turn of events, landing two 12yearolds, Morgan Geyser and anissa weier, behind bars. I would be surprised if this came out of nowhere. Reporter many are wondering if there were warning signs. Wasnt any kind of issues. Any problems with discipline. Reporter the principal of the school all three girls attended, talking to abc news about the girls relationship. I dont know if they were best friends. They were friends. They did get together. Reporter geyser and weier are being charged as adults, with firstdegree intentional homicide. These arent just regular kids with maturity problems. These are kids with no conscience. Reporter more details emerging about the girls who allegedly stabbed their 12yearold friend 19 times in hopes of meeting a fictional character called slender man. According to court documents, weier stated you needed to kill a person to show your dedication to slender man. Many people do not believe that slender man is real. And she wanted to, quote, prove the skeptics wrong. The parents of Morgan Geyser express sympathy for the victim and her family in a statement on monday. And at school, the principal trying to help the girls classmates cope. We have great people that care about kids and care about each other. And are supporting each other. Reporter and some good news this morning about the victim. The principal tells us that she recently moved out of intensive care. And the hospital telling us, shes been upgraded to fair condition. That means recovery is starting to happen. Thank goodness for that. What are people behind the slender man website saying about it all . Reporter the website is saying this is a character creating online. And people are adapting stories to it. Theyre not saying theyre responsible. Its a proliferation of stories that the Internet Community has been involved in. And its grown over time. Its taken on a life of its own. And the website is saying this isnt our responsibility. And the school, by the way, saying this wasnt on their radar. This was not something they were looking for. So, it shocked them, as well. Ryan, thanks very much. Thankfully, the young girl seems to be recovering well. Now, to a milliondollar heist out of washington state. Burglars pulling off an operation straight out of a movie, getting a safe full of gold. Abcs Neal Karlinsky has that story for us. Reporter as robberies go, what happened in this gold and jewelry star south of seattle, rivals oceans eleven. A safe with 1 million of gold inside, cleaned out. A hole cut right through the back of the safe, through a wall through the business next door. All discovered through the Jewelry Stores horror when she opened the safe. I dropped to my knees. Reporter the stores motion sensors didnt pick up a thing. But Security Cameras did spot something strange. Look closely. Police say a small camera on a flexible lighted scope was used to examine the alarm system. Where are the thieves . This is the point of entry. It was 00. 30 in the morning. Reporter the fourhour safe job began when thieves cut through the roof of a neighboring business. From there, they put through walls, sneaked that camera inside. And eventually cut the back of the safe and emptied it out, without tripping an alarm or setting one foot inside. The actress now demanding a new trial after receiving a shocking letter from the jury foreman. Lindszie janis has that for us. Reporter she made millions of dollars on friends. But in a highlypublicized trial this year, a judge ordered lisa kudrow to cut her manager a check for 1. 6 million. But a new and bizarre twist could send them back to court. The Hollywood Reporter says it obtained a letter reportedly written to kudrow from the jury foreman, which could suggest a jury disconduct. Apologizing for the verdict, he writes, i firmly believe the majority decision was not correct. Adding the attorney gave an unwarranted, untrue attack of lisa kudrows character. He reportedly went on to describe jury deliberations. Claiming that one of the jurors was a former deputy district attorney, who he says used her influence to persuade other jurors. A claim that three jurors, in sworn statements, denied. I am sorry. But im incredibly talented. Reporter howard claimed kudrow had promised him 10 from what she earns from reruns on friends and other projects and won. Speaking with abc news, after the verdict, back in february. We set a precedent for a situation where actors and representatives live up to an oral agreement. Reporter howards attorney, mark bout, is confident in the ruling that was made. Telling the Hollywood Reporter quote, the verdict is righteous. Crudo and her lawyers declined to speak to abc news. They return to court to make the case for a new trial. Today, defense secretary chuck hagel revealing that the prisoner swap was unanimously approved by the white house. Hagel will testify to Congress Next week. Bergdahls hometown in idaho has canceled a welcome home celebration because of security concerns. A celebrity diet trend thats now spread to the middle school set. Hundreds of children in l. A. Are trying out a twoweek long vegan cleanse. Its sparked quite the debate online. Abbie boudreau has more on whether cleansing makes sense for kids. Reporter its one thing for superstars, like beyonce and jay z, to test out popular detox diets, like their recent vegan cleanse. But kids and cleanses . Author of the 21 day superstar cleanse, rainbeau mars, is hoping kids will swap out junk food for a twoweek allraw and vegan challenge. I think thats going maybe a little too far . Absolutely not. The goal is for children to understand we are what we eat. Reporter there are no set rules or recipes. Just a simple pledge to eat clean. We have fruit, smoothies and pasta. But it was vegan. Reporter mars daughter is helping lead the cause, even inspiring two of her friends to test the cleanse. I feel very energized and very upbeat. I feel like a new person. Reporter and moms are loving what they see. This is really about kind of simplifying things. Richard besser joins us now. Rich, youre not a fan . No. Its good to get attention, but as a pediatrician, this is wrong in so many ways. One is, it teaches people that you can eat lousy and have a fad diet and overcome it. Thats really, really bad. Its wrong in terms of science. Telling kids that our bodies need a cleanse. Our liver, our kidneys do great in that. You dont need a cleanse to help you with that. And its a casual approach to being vegan. You can be vegan and healthy. But it takes a lot of work for for kids, youre going to end up malnourished. I started with a meatless monday. I just said, monday, go meatless. And work it in. But psychologically, rich, what can it do to kids . In addition to teaching kids about fad diets as a healthy approach, one of the things i talk to parents about in terms of looking for eating disorders, or disordered eating, is kids who go on a more and more restrictive diet. And so, i worry about that, as well. The kids who go on this are going to lose weight. And theres a lot of things in our society that says thats a good thing. What can you do as a parent to get your children to eat healthier without going on to one of these fads . Its all about making nutrition part of your life. You want to model the behavior you see in your kids. Take it on as a family project. One day a week, were going to shop together, were going to cook together and eat together. Were going to buy local produce. Were going to buy things in season. And were going to try a new vegetable we havent had before. Not to see my kid eat broccoli. Well do this together. And that can lead to life long change. This wont do that. Good tips. Thank you. I like brussels sprouts now. I actually like them now. First soared into orbit on board the challenger, in 1983. And now, our friend and former colleague, lynn sherr, has written a definitive biography of this pioneer. Thanks for coming in. Thrilled to be here with you. You covered sally ride for 30 years. She died in 2012. Thats when you started to write the biography. And you learn an awful lot about her that you didnt know. I did. Sally was a good friend of mine. As you say. A woman i covered. A woman i hung out with. Playful. And was intensity private. And one of the things i didnt know and that the world didnt know was that she had been living with another woman for a long time. Had a relationship for 27 years. And this was not something that i would call a secret, as much as i would call it that she was very private. And there were few people around that knew. But it was not something she wanted to share with the world. And going back to the time when she was trying to become an astronaut, if people knew she were living with another woman, if she were gay, was there any chance she would be an astronaut . Absolutely none. But at the time, she was married to a man. And sally was going through whatever she was going through. And that was a perfectly wonderful marriage to another astronaut. But sally kept all of this to herself. She never talked about it. She didnt talk about it to any of her partners. Didnt talk about it to me. I never asked. And this is just the way she chose to do it. She became one of the bestknown people in the world. We forget, it seems second nature. Of course, there was a female astronaut. What a barrier breaker she was. She really was. And right before she flew for the first time, i said to her, do you feel under any pressure . She said, i do feel pressure not to mess up. What she meant was, if she messed up, it would be seen as if all women would mess up. If she did well, all women would do well. And she did perfectly. And opened the door for women to do anything they wanted the in world. She had a playful side, too. I love what she did before her first launch. The signal she gave you. Sally was the most famous person on the planet. She was on the cover of every magazine. And she called me up at the abc work space. Come outside in five minutes. I work out. There she was in shorts and a tshirt and flipflops and waving to me. She was pushing the envelope a little bit. Im not going to get close to you. But you can report on the air that im doing great. Theres a hot air mass sitting over top of the bay area but its getting undercut at the coast by the sea breeze. It will be warmest saturday and sunday, possible triple digits inland, mid80s around the bay but still comfortable at the coast, mid60s. We have a crash involving four vehicles in south San Francisco. As youre traveling along southbound 101 right at 380, as you start heading into san bruno, thats where we have one lane blocked.
