Thats a huge alligator. I dont know what hes wearing. But they wanted him out of there asap. But lets get to the very latest on those roaring wildfires. Seven major ones burning through Southern California this morning, scorching thousands of acres, destroying homes and causing millions of dollars in damage. Five days in, the firefight is still from over. Bazi kanani has more. Bazi, good morning. Reporter good morning, bianna. This is one of the neighborhoods where residents arent allowed to return. The military families at Camp Pendleton on friday joining the 26,000 forced to evacuate. Hopefully, we come back to a house in one piece and not burnt down. Reporter the hope of so many, as cooler weather and calming winds allow firefighters to get the upper hand, more residents are now being allowed to return home. They saved the house, thats amazing. Reporter a close call in this case, a house damaged but still standing. Not everyone is so lucky. Its just devastation. Its irreplaceable. Reporter jack was not able to halt the blaze heading toward his home in escondido. It was too late, it jumped straight in. Reporter in this neighborhood, a stark contrast, here a home owner who had good clearance around the home and sprinklers. And over here, right next door, a homeowner who didnt, the entire home destroyed. Fire officials are now pleading with all californians to think Fire Prevention after this early start to a threatening season. Investigators are looking to arson as the possible cause of some of the fires here. Making three separate arrests so far this week. They do know the cause of one of the fires, it was caused by sparks from construction equipment. Dan . All right, bazi, thank you. And now, to what looks like a drive through hell, an incredible video shot from inside a car through the worst fires roaring through carlsbad, california, take a look. Fire storm coming our way. I was on the drivers side. And i could feel the heat coming through the passenger side and thats obviously where he was filming. The heat was just incredible. I remember looking down here and seeing the flames, you know, it must have been 15 feet high. There was only one way out. It was not going back. We have a median on our left. You obviously saw what was going on our right. The only way to get out of it was to go straight through the smoke. The sound from the flames to me its like a roar of a lion, i mean, you wouldnt think fire would make that sound. Right down that road is, you had the idea of what we were about to drive through. There it is right there. We came right here, this is where you you started to feel the heat right about here, you could see it. It was fully up to the road at this point. Two days ago it was complete uncontrolled chaos. We were kind of in a once in a lifetime position. We wanted to check out something that wasnt going to be a huge magnitude. Wreaking havoc for that entire city, incredible video. And this is why they tell people to stay away from the fires. Exactly, exactly. And some good news, calmer winds and cooler temperatures are helping firefighters. But will the weather continue to cooperate . And about 50 feet below, there was a young woman, in her 20s, who was badly injured and unresponsive. Reporter the Boston Fire Department can be heard on radio dispatch coming up with a plan to rescue here. The first plan is to remove the victim through the hatch in the elevator. Reporter it worked. Lowering her down. She was found unconscious and quickly transported to bethisrael hospital. A First Responder telling abc news the woman was in critical but stable condition as of late last night. The womans name hasnt been released. And the hospital isnt giving out any information on her condition. The Boston Police are investigating the incident. And the sign of small town of tipton, iowa, reads where dreams happen. Theyre looking for two powerball winners from tipton, one bought a ticket worth a million bucks. The other, only 10,000. Sold back in january. Officials say that the odds or likelihood of a small town of 3200 residents having two winners is pretty much unheard of. If no one claims the prize the money goes back into the lottery pool. Which would be very unfortunate. And finally, a remarkable find in argentina. Youre looking at the bones of what may be the largest creature ever to walk the earth. Ever. Based on the size of the animals thigh bone. They believe that the dinosaur was 65 feet tall and 130 feet long when it roamed the earth. Reer is eveners said that the dinosaur weighed about 77 tons. Thats about 14 elephants. Or its about 1,000 dan harrises. [ laughter ] based on the age. Is that a good thing or a bad thing . Its very, very heavy. I knew this story was going to go wrong for me. This is what is known as a hervibore. There you go. Imagine what would happen if there were a 1,000 of me. Oh, lord, help us. Help us. Okay, dr. Harris, thank you. We have a real doctor, health news now, new Research Showing eating two large meals a day and not six smaller ones may be the best way for diabetics to control their blood sugar levels. We have a real doctor here, so lets bring in abcs dr. Richard besser. Tell us about this study. Can diet be used to control type ii diabetes . This is a small study out of the czech republic. 54 people for half the study they had two large meals a day. For the other half of this study they had six smaller meals. A day. Same number of calories across the board. When they were having two large meals a day, they lost more weight and their blood sugar was better controlled. So, do you recommend limiting their food intake to two meals a day . I wouldnt, based on this one study. The other thing here they were having breakfast and lunch. For us culturally, dinner is the time where we all get together. But it does say work with your doctor on what kind of food does best for you with controlling your diabetes. Let me get you to expand on that a little bit. We have so many people in this country with diabetes, what is your advice to them for managing their diet . Well, you know, the prediction is that, by 2050, 1 in 3 adults is going to have diabetes. But we can turn the tide on that, the biggest risk factor is being overweight or obese. But, it doesnt take a big weight loss to change that around. If you can lose 5 of your body weight, if you weigh 200 pounds, thats only ten pounds, it cuts your risk of diabetes by more than half. By more than half. Small changes there can help turn that curve. The sooner you start, the better. Thats right. People with mild diabetes, just starting some exercise may be enough to control the blood sugar. Hopeful note, rich, thank you. You hear a noise in the backyard. You step outside to check it out and imagine you discover this a gator in your pool. Thats what happened to a family in florida and abcs Michelle Franzen is here with the story. Michelle, good morning. Good morning. Gators are a part of everyday life in florida. But for this couple in florida a surprise runin with one that made himself at home was too close for comfort. Talk about a rude awakening. Sharon bente got the shock of her life while investigating a loud noise at her bradenton, florida, home. I saw something thats not usually in the pool and it turned out to be an eightfoot alligator. Reporter an eightfoot alligator. This guy, taking a dip in the family pool next to the floatie. But, there was nothing fun about this pool crasher. Bente said her instincts kicked in. Can i get back to the door without it seeing me . Reporter bentes husband said the gator tore his way through the screen leaving a gaping hole in the enclosed patio. The reptile enjoyed his freestyle swim until the couple called police. And he was just swimming around in circles. He tried to get up here for a while. I think he was a little intimidated with everybody watching, too. Reporter ultimately it took a trained alligator trapper to remove the trespasser. It was quite an evening. Quite an evening. Reporter an evening the couple hopes is a onetime runin. Im going to be sleeping with at least one eye open for a while. Now the couple has to make a few repairs to the screen surrounding the pool a small price to pay, they say, after this close encounter. As for the gator, it was transported to a gator farm. Good. We were worried about that. The floatie is okay . We got word that the floatie is okay in the pool. Lot of urgent updates. I would have panicked. Michelle, thank you. Well, now, to a survival story that can only be called miraculous, a young man in a coma for two months with doctors giving up hope that he could ever wake up. His parents even contemplating organ donation. Now, two years later, he has a Bright Future ahead of him and he says everyone can learn from this experience. Sara has this story. Reporter the dreaded phone call that your son has been in a car accident and then facing the decision of whether to turn off life support because he probably wont make it. Well, he did. And now, sam schmid is not only surviving, but thriving. Watching 23yearold sam schmid play basketball, you would have no idea that just two years ago doctors didnt expect him to survive. Odds of him making it were very slim. Reporter in october 2011, a horrible fivecar pileup in tucson, arizona, sam schmid was among the injured. He was airlifted to an institute in phoenix. In a deep coma, two months later, just as the staff was about to take him off life support, sams neurosurgeon said he had a hunch. I said lets get one more mri scan. Reporter when the scan came back, it showed sam was not braindead. He delivered the news to sams mom. That night, everything changed. Sam wiggled two fingers on command. It was a miracle. Reporter soon, he was getting around in a wheelchair and even talking. In the beginning, when he started the program, he was working on fundamentals. He was working on being able to walk, swallow. There you go. Reporter and here is sam today, after two years of grueling physical, speech and occupational therapy. The first thing i do remember is waking up in rehab and wondering where i was. Reporter now, hes enrolled in College Classes and hoping to be a veterinary tech. He credits his surgeons and perseverance even against the odds. Its not so much that i was lucky that i had such a remarkable recovery, its that i worked for this remarkable recovery. Giving it your best shot. And one thing sam said, in addition to crediting his surgeon, he said that it was perseverance because he worked hard through the whole thing. Hes still working hard. Everything he does, from lifting a pencil to talking, everything is a gift now. Were all happy with this story. Thank you, sara. Lets get a look at the National Forecast now.
