kate wins out over william, not once, but twice, in a boat race on the high seas. shrugging off her royal rival, who gave a not-so-royal excuse, saying, he was sabotaged. and good morning, america. let's look right at that heart-stopping moment of impact from the bus crash in northern california, 100 miles north of sacramento. it was all caught on camera. >> it was actually a college tour for high school students from southern california, that turned tragic in an instant. the charred wreckage there, from the crash between a bus and a fedex tractor-trailer. you can see, there's the two vehicles. nearly completely destroyed. >> thankfully, more than 40 students on the bus, many were able to escape through a window that somebody kicked open. bazi kanani is on the scene in orland, california, right now. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, george. a heartbreaking crash scene here. post drivers, three teenagers and three of the chap roans killed in this accident. at least 33 others injured. scorching flames, thick, black smoke and twisted metal. a horrifying inferno erupts when a fedex truck swerves across a grassy median on this northern california highway. slamming head-on into a bus full of high school students, on their way to an overnight college visit. >> many had cuts, contusions, bumps, minor burns. the ones i saw. i know there was one person when we arrived on scene, that was unfortunately, he was on fire. >> reporter: the students, escaping through a window that someone kicked open. jonathan gutierrez was onboard. >> it was hard to breathe in there. that's when i started panicking. the smoke was everywhere. you could not see where you were going. >> reporter: massive flames devouring both vehicles. as firefighters struggle to put out the blaze, the survivors watched helplessly as many of their friends were perishing inside. >> i went outside. and everything was in flames already. there were a couple explosions after that. >> i look and i see a big, like, red mushroom. >> reporter: a student captured this photo of the bus shortly before the crash. the excited group of teenagers from los angeles listened to music and chatted at the beginning of their voyage to humboldt state university. then, at 5:30 p.m., the vehicle began to shake left-to-right, followed by a loud burst. witnesses say they knew they were in trouble. two other explosions quickly occurred. the tour bus is owned by silverado stages. the company says it is assisting authorities in gathering information. it's still not known why the semi crossed over into oncoming traffic. it was still early in the evening, still daylight out and there was no inclement weather. amy. >> bazi kanani, thanks for the latest on that. we hear from one of the students on that bus. jonathan gutierrez, speaking out about the horrific accident, from his hospital bed overnight. take a listen. >> i heard people yelling. and then, when they woke up, i heard the crash. and as soon as that happened, i flew out of my seat. and that's when i realized we got into an accident. the entire bus was, like, covered with smoke from the fire. and the fire was in the front of the bus. and i was in the back of the bus. and kids were panicking. i think two kids broke the window so everybody could get out. and everybody was trying to rush to get out because they saw the fire was spreading. they jumped out. all i could think about was what just happened? i need to get out of here. and it was hard to breathe in there. that's when i started panicking. the smoke was everywhere. you could not see where you were going. you saw the light from the window. and you could hear everybody coughing. it was so traumatizing. the window to the floor down, that's a long jump. and people were panicking. they were throwing themselves out the window. and when i jumped out the window, i fell on my leg. and my leg is injured. i could hardly walk. but i'm alive, and that's what counts. we haven't introduced ourselves or anything like that. but we help each other out. that's what you should do. that's what everybody did. that's one thing that calmed down everybody. a lot of them were panicking. and they know that i'm, like, a fun person. so, i just like, let me send a selfie. that way, they'll know i'm good. >> from the words of jonathan gutierrez. but such horrific moments that happened in a split-second. >> yeah. our hearts go out to those families. we're going to move to washington now, and the revelation that the cabinet secretary in charge of obamacare. kathleen sebelius, who took so much heat for the rollout of the president's health care website will be replaced today. jonathan karl is at the white house. good morning, jon. >> reporter: good morning, george. kathleen sebelius was the public face of the disastrous obamacare rollout. but the president for months resisted calls to fire her and never publicly placed the blame directly on her for the website's disastrous start. but with the open enrollment period over, 7 million people signed up. this was a chance for her to leave on a relatively high note. to replace her, the president will nominate sylvia matthews burwell. that's currently his budget director. she's widely respected. she was confirmed 96-0, by the senate. but as you can imagine, these confirmation hearings for hhs secretary will be more contentious. >> no question about that. another high-profile politician under fire in a very different way. hillary clinton out in las vegas. you see it right there. she took a shoe, whizzing right by her head. and here's what she had to say about it. >> cycling, about two -- what was that? a bat? was that a bat? that's somebody throwing something at me? is that part of cirque du soleil? my goodness. i didn't know solid waste management was so controversial. good she didn't play softball like i did. >> reporter: as you can hear there, george, hillary clinton took that with good humor. but it was a scary moment. reminiscent, of course, that time when george w. bush had two shoes thrown at him at a press conference in baghdad. as for the woman who did it, no indication of who she is yet. they haven't identified her by name. and no indication as to why she threw that shoe. >> hillary clinton, quick with the quip. but that was a scary moment for a second. thanks, jon karl. we'll have all of the politics sunday on "this week." now to the breaking news details of the daring rescue by the fbi. saving a kidnapped military contractor. we're learning the motive behind this bizarre abduction and who planned it. abc's martha raddatz is in washington with the very latest on this one. good morning, martha. martha, this sounds like a movie in the making. >> reporter: it sure does. an episode of "24." this stunning kidnapping with traceable threats of torture and death has people asking how did these suspected kidnappers ever think they would get away with it? this morning, all five kidnapping suspects, after being charged in court, are behind bars and their hostage freed after a terrifying period of captivity. april 5th, frank jansen, a 63-year-old military contractor living in north carolina, assaulted and snatched right from his doorstep. tased, stuffed into a car, and driven over 400 miles to atlanta. april 7th, 1:51 a.m. jansen's wife receives terrifying text messages. they say her husband is in the trunk of a car on the way to california. they threaten that if police are called, they will send her husband back in six boxes. they begin demanding help for habitual felon, kelvin melton, locked up in a north carolina prison. it was jansen's daughter, colleen, who put melton behind bars. >> he was previously prosecuted by jansen's daughter. she is an assistant district attorney. and as a result, melton received a state sentence of life without parole. >> reporter: but a cell phone that melton allegedly smuggled into the prison would be his undoing. the fab began desperately tracking the threatening text messages and cell phone logs, including calls made to and from melton's prison cell. april 9:00th, 12:19 a.m. another text to jansen's wife, this one with a photo showing frank jansen tied to a chair. if you cannot tell me where my things are at tomorrow, says the text, i will start torturing. 8:20 p.m., the fbi intercepts a terrifying call from the suspected kidnappers. get a bag over his head and stuff something in his mouth. don't leave any dna behind. the calls are traced to this apartment complex in atlanta. 11:55 p.m., the fbi elite hostage rescue team sweeps in. >> just heard a lot of commotion. a lot of booms. >> reporter: moments later, without a shot being fired, jansen is free. and jansen is home safe with his family this morning, thanks to that fbi team. but frank jansen was in a perilous and frightening situation, george. >> he certainly was. let's get more from brad garrett. it's amazing that this prisoner was able to direct this from a cell phone in this his cell. >> you're not able to have cell phones in prisons. it's a huge problem, smuggling phones in. and it goes to the desperateness of this. if you're going to run it from prison, how else to do it but with a cell phone? >> what did the guys think they could get? >> that's the real question. i think the reality, this is butt revenge. this is about a guy doing life without parole. and he's going after the prosecutor. i've seen this before. not kidnapping family members, but going after prosecutors for big sentences. >> and the kidnappers amateurs, which could make them more dangerous. >> absolutely. they will make the mistakes of giving you too much medication, putting a bag over your head, mistakenly kill you while they move you around. that's a big concern. >> that's why the best fbi team was called in. >> two reasons, yes. that, because of the prosecutor. and they have the most unique door-breaching skills of anyone. to blow a door and get into a room within -- by the time you can set a coffee cup down, they're in and on top of you. >> did a great job. brad garrett, thanks very much. >> thank you. now, the investigation into the terrifying rash of highway shootings around kansas city. police saying the number of cars shot is at least up to 20. three people have been injured. and now, the fbi has joined in that hunt. abc's pierre thomas has the story. >> reporter: police and federal agents are hunting for a possible serial shooter. with as many as 20 drivers possibly targeted. this morning, tom mcfarlane is happy to be alive. he narrowly avoided being shot on a kansas city, missouri, highway. >> something hit the car. didn't know what it was. pulled over my first opportunity. and that's when i saw the bullet hole. >> reporter: he is 1 of 20 people shot at, along stretches of interstates 435 and 470, in just the past month. many clustered near exit ramps and interchanges. two people have been shot in the legs and another in the arm. law enforcement sources tell us, there's evidence linking some of the shootings. in a number of cases a handgun is involved. where the shooter fires just before speeding off to an upcoming exit ramp or split in the highway. in one shooting, an unidentified victim was shot by someone in a ski mask and hood firing from a car. in another, a woman heard a loud noise while driving home, was shocked to see a bullet hole in the door next to where her 3-year-old daughter had been sitting. >> right on the edge of someone getting killed. anytime you have a random shooter with no reason or mindset behind it. >> reporter: as word is spreading about the random shootings, so is fear. >> it's really scary to think that somebody is out here doing it with no regard to what could happen. >> reporter: local police are determined to solve these cases before anyone gets killed. hoping to avoid the deadly 2002 washington sniper shootings that paralyzed this entire region for weeks. there's a sense of urgency this morning to solve this before more shots are fired. amy? >> so frightening there. pierre thomas, thanks so much. let's turn to dan abrams for the top stories. >> good morning, everyone. we begin with breaking news in the search for missing malaysian flight 370. australia's prime minister says crews are now confident the signals detected in the indian ocean are from the missing plane. the crews have narrowed the search to, quote, within some kilometers. they have to pick up more sounds before the batteries in the black boxes die. also overnight, a new earthquake along the pacific rim. this time, in nicaragua. the 6.1 magnitude quake damaged homes and injured dozens of people. closer to home, six earthquakes jolted central oklahoma overnight. the strongest, a magnitude 4.1. the suspect in a deadly hit-and-run at a florida day care is finally in custody. 28-year-old robert corchado surrendered one day after the crash. it killed a 4-year-old girl and injured 13 other children. tensions between russia and ukraine rising to a possible boiling point this morning. pro-russian demonstrators who seized ukrainian government offices have been given until today to surrender or ukraine is threatening to use force. meantime, nato says, these satellite images show russian forces mobilizing on the border. and nine former pro hockey players are suing the nhl, claiming the league intentionally promoted extreme violence by encouraging fights, regardless of the risk to players. the league says it will vigorously defend its safety record. a controversy doing the -- during the yankees/red sox game. yankees pitcher, michael pineda, appeared to have a substance resembling pine tar on his hand. of course that would be a no-no. it was gone by the fifth inning. pitchers aren't allowed to put anything on the ball. pineda said it was dirt he used because he was sweating. and finally, sometimes taking a short cut, not the best idea. the driver of this $100,000 mercedes learned that the hard way. he tried to take a short cut through a construction zone. and -- ended up in wet concrete. they had to use jackhammers to free the car. sometimes you just don't believe those signs that say, do not enter. >> what do you have against owners of high-end cars?
