Yet again. She will be loved and the woman millions of bachelor fans have been waiting to hear from. Clare, here live. No, she didnt get juan pablos final rose. She is getting the final word. Here this morning, to tell all, only on gma. Make you feel beautiful and good morning, america. Lets get right to the breaking news. A brandnew headline as we come on the air. Officials this morning now say it was the copilot who said the last words from the cockpit of that malaysian jumbo jet, 1 19 a. M. Saying, all right, good night. We know the transponder was turned off two minutes later. But officials now admit they dont know the exact time a second Key Communication system was shut down. The confusion continues. We do know that the 26 countries now in the massive search effort. The main focus on the southern indian ocean off the west coast of australia at this hour. Malaysian Airlines Flight 370 could have remained in the air for seven hours. Some parts of the indian ocean are almost three miles deep. Lots to get to. Before we go that, we have to go to breaking news in the west on that 4. 4 magnitude earthquake felt all across the Greater Los Angeles area. Nick watt joins us live by phone from las vegas right now. Good morning to you, nick. Reporter good morning, josh. Well, this was a relatively shallow earthquake, just five miles down, we think centered around the ensee know area, northwest los angeles. About 15 miles from downtown but as you say, felt across all of los angeles. Im about seven miles it shook me off of my bed, set off my security alarm in my head. One guy in west hills said it felt like a bomb had gone off underneath his house. Pictures shaken off walls but most importantly, no injuries reported so far by the los angeles fire department. They are on emergency alert. But no injuries so far. This was certainly the most sustained earthquake we felt here in a couple of years. It lasted a few seconds. A couple weeks ago we had a 3. 2 that was just a quick jolt. This lasted for a few seconds and certainly makes people concerned. Remember, it was 20 years ago the north ridge earthquake, 6. 7 that killed 20 people. Sorry 57 people. Thats in peoples minds. Lot of people work here in lafrgs, lot of people little bit scared, josh. Of course, nick, it happening really in the predawn hours. That fear is understandable. I do want to ask, historically many of the quakes felt in the Greater Los Angeles area do the end to be more slow rum blers. You said yourself, i talked to a couple people in the lafrgs as well, theyre all describing it as a sharp jolt this morning. Reporter well, it was a sharp jolt but there was a little bit of a roll to it. We had a sharp jolt two weeks ago a 3. 2, i think that was. And that was just a jolt. This definitely lasted a few seconds. It was sharp but it lasted for few seconds. Again, well have updates on any damage done by this earthquake as news becomes available. Nick watt, thank you for that. We want to turn now to malaysian plane flight 370 and the new details on the search for the missing jumbo jet at this hour. Abcs david kerley has the very latest joins us in studio with big developments now, overnight on the copilot. This development of the last radio coming from the copilot. This is significant. As to what may have actually happened in that cockpit. The priority remains trying to find this aircraft. You were hearing about these two possible lines of the last location of flight 370. This all comes from partial satellite data. It kind of seems strange. One to the north, one to the south. Two sources tell us the southern arc off australia is the one we need to concentrate. This morning, as it becomes clear that someone shut down much of flight 370s commune gags gear, they probably didnt realize that the jet was still pinging off a satellite over the ekwau tor, every hour. Six pings in all. Those pings only tell distance, not location. Not even northern or southern hemisphere. But experts were able to use the last ping to plot position points and to spot where the jet would likely run out of fuel. Connect the dots and because the earth is round, we get two arcs. Our sources say it was most likely on this southern track that the plane went down. Likely in the south indian ocean. Far west of australia. Australia now coordinating that search area. This morning, the malaysians said theyre redirecting this search to the south but still asking their neighbors to the north to provide radar and satellite data. The malaysians also say they conducted a simulator run that confirms a 777 could have taken that strange course. One thing that seems clear, whoever was at the controls apparently knew what they were doing. If youre shutting off those systems intentionally, one reason is to vanish. To make it difficult to find you. Reporter as abc news first reported, soon after takeoff, for beijing at 12 41, things start happening in the cockpit. Some time after 1 07, the Data Transmission system is shut off. In a 30minute window. At 1 19, the last radio signal. Malaysian Officials Say this morning it was the copilot who radioed Kuala Lumpur Air Traffic Controllers and says all right, good night. No indication anything was wrong. Then at 1 21, two minutes later, the location transmission beacon is shut off. Moments later, that hard left bank, which we have been told was preprogrammed into the jets computer. This would take a lot of thought and, um, a lot of preparation to pull this off. Reporter finding the jet remains a priority. This morning, the u. S. s most technologically submarine p 8is in the region. As that southern arc remains the focus. We just learned that hightech aircraft, p8 has been up there. Its going to fly down to australia today. Two more australian planes, a total of three sub hunters will join in the search. Everything is starting to focus here off australia into southern indian ocean, george. Thanks, david. Thats the focus of the search. Lets get more on the pilots. Theyre the focus of the investigators. Bob woodruff is covering that from kuala lumpur. Good morning, bob. Reporter good morning, george. This is the prayer wall here at the Kuala Lumpur International airport. Nine days ago today that flight 370 took off from here. That mystery continues to unfold. The investigation is intensifying. This morning, video, posted many times on youtube, but yet to be authenticated, appeared to show the pilot of malaysian Airlines Flight 370 going through airport security. The malaysian authorities are refocusing the investigations on all passengers and crew on board 370. Reporter over in the weekend, investigators combed through Zaharie Ahmad shahs home. Confiscating two laptops and his home Flight Simulator, seen here in this Youtube Video he posted. When i asked a close friend of the captain about the Flight Simulator, he said shah was a tech geek who simply loved to fly. To be able to buy things off the counter and set up his own Flight Simulator, yeah, and something hes proud of. Reporter in terms of politics, hes a member of the Opposition Party in malaysia, whose party leader was jailed the very same day of the flight. March 7th. Chong says despite the tshirt here, declaring democracy is dead, the pilot is not an extremist. 57yearold chris nissan of oregon has known shah for over 18 years and says theres no way he was involved. I cant imagine him doing anything to hurt himself, the passengers, the property. It really hurts when people would even suggest Something Like that. Reporter investigators are also looking into the copilot 27yearold fariq abdul hamid. According to channel 9 australias a current affair, invited these women into the cockpit back in 2011. Allegedly taking pictures and smoking cigarettes with the women during the flight. Meanwhile, families of passengers, like american phillip wood, are not giving up home. Hope. We were raised to have a deep christian faith. Were relying on that right now real heavily. Reporter now back here at the airport on this wall, you can see theres more prayers and hopes and words every single day. Its growing, 30 yards long. Some of them are handmade, others are by people who come in and sign. In fact, this one is for the copilot, fariq. All of these hopes and prayers are for every Single Person on that plane. George . A lat lot of heart attack other there. Thank you, bob. Steve ganyard joins us now. First off, we know it was the copilot who spoke the last words. What does that tell us . George the time line has been muddied about when these actions have been taken in the cockpit. But all the facts weve been talking about, all the premeditated actions. The change in course. The acars, turning off the transponders, all these premeditated actions still stand. Its interesting that the copilot did this. Were trying to to figure out who is the more likely suspect here if it is the crew members. And for the copilot to say something, theyll go back and look at the voices and look for stress in his voice to see did somebody have a gun at his head . Was he being told to do something . But again, lots of little clues but were still not there yet. You add to that the Malaysian Airlines officials are saying the two pilots did not request to fly together. Right. So you cant say they were conspirators. Finding a link between them has been fruitless so far. Meantime they are looking into that Flight Simulator. What could that conceivably tell us . Well a Flight Simulator has a computer hard drive on it. You could go back and do some Computer Forensics and look at perhaps the pilot had preprogrammed some of these routes into that simulator. Maybe he had test flown a rout if he was, in fact, responsible for this. Theyll go back and do some standard Computer Forensics on that hard drive. And on the search now, it appears that the malaysians have been catching up to what we have been thinking the last few days that the focus really is on the south, not that Northern Land route. Yeah, so, now that as our sources have been telling us for days, well shift to the south. You see that the australians are now responsible for that part of the search. But i think that we need to be careful here, george, because were getting into that part of the mishap investigation where the facts, i think, will kind of continue to come to a halt, if not just to a trickle. So the facts, the science, were not going to get too much more out of the satellites. Theyre going to have to do some ontheground forensics. We have to be careful not to do too much speculation. As we continue to look for the wreckage of that airplane. We have a lot more to learn, thanks very much, steve. Brings up a good point, so much frustration right now. Now to the latest on the Severe Weather slamming parts of the country. High winds, flooding in alabama. A new winter storm hitting the east. Ginger tracking it all. I sure am. I think were all at the snow exhaustion point. Especially washington, d. C. Waking up with a half foot this morning. The snow coming to an end there from south new jersey all the way through parts of maryland and of course delaware. But the Severe Weather now targeting florida today and the three dozen or more reports that came from this weekend. Flash floods. And winds up to 110 Miles Per Hour ripping through alabama sunday. This clothing store, nearly torn apart. Nearly a dozen buildings damaged including at least three homes. You hear a loud noise, boom, and it shook the top of my house. Reporter this man and his wife were in another part of their home when they heard this tree crashing into their bedroom. We were in bed 45 minutes before it hit. We heard the wind blowing. Real loud. I heard a flashing of what sounded like sleet falling. And it went away just like that. Reporter and north of all that Severe Weather, another hit of winter. Up to half a foot of snow falling from illinois to washington, d. C. If you had told me two days ago it was going to be snowing right now, i would have told you you were crazy. Reporter the government closed for another snow day. And we just got brand new update on the computer models. Very little left as we saw on the radar. A little bit in southeastern pennsylvania. Parts of south jersey, maryland. And then Severe Weather. It is possible, isolated tornado or two, strong winds, hail. Gainesville, jacksonville, to ft. Myers. Well be watching Severe Weather in florida and we have a lot of talk about big, big wind out west coming up next. Okay, thank you, ginger. The latest on the highstakes showdown between russia and the west. Crimea voted overwhelmingly on sunday to leave ukraine and join russia. A vote ratified by their parliament today. The u. S. Says that vote is illegal and will start to impose sanctions on russia today. Martha raddatz has more. The president had a blunt phone call with president putin last night. Reporter blunt indeed. President obama telling putin this vote is illegal and will never be recognized by the u. S. But for now, it seems putin has gotten exactly what he wanted from this vote. Now the question is, what more does he want . Jubilation this morning for the overwhelming majority of crimeans who voted to join russian federation. Im russian. I want to live in russia. Its a real holiday, its a real event. Its one of the most important days in all my life. Reporter but the white house is rejecting the referendum, saying it was administered under threats of violence and intimidation from a Russian Military intervention that violates international law. And now, the u. S. Is all but promising to hit putin where it hurts. Vowing economic and diplomatic sanctions. Against russia. I think he marched into crimea because he didnt believe the United States and europe would take a chunk of flesh out of his economy. Reporter if the European Union joins in on sanctions, it could mean Major Pressure on putin to withdraw his forces back into russia. If, on monday, we announce a with the European Union a set of crippling sanctions coming after not only individuals but russian business entities, i think that sends a strong message to putin. Reporter and u. S. Officials insist, russia will not overtake ukraine without a fight. One they say could turn into a long and bloody fight. The fear, of course, is that putin will send troops further into ukraine, which could prompt a civil war. Russians are doing nothing to calm the situation with one of its most prominent news anchors saying overnight that russia remains the only country in the world capable of turning the u. S. Into radio active dust. Not exactly helpful, george. Ill say. That was pretty shocking, martha. You see rhetoric like that, and the moves that putin has made so far, the real question will be can the sanctions make a difference . Can they deter him . The sanctions would target russian and ukrainian officials that were part of the move into crimea. The sanctions would escalate if putin makes more provocative moves. But it is quite obvious this morning, george, that these threats seem meaningless to putin so far. Okay, martha raddatz, thanks very much. To josh with the other top stories. We begin here with a scare for passengers on a delta flight from orlando to atlanta. They herd a loud boom and then saw this out the window of the plane. A panel on the wing apparently had broken off. They alerted the crew. The pilots made an emergency landing. Delta says the incident did not affect the planes ability to actually fly but the plane did have to be towed off the runway. A Flight Attendant was injured during severe turbulence on this plane flying between canada and mexico. It had to land in montana. Passengers waited ten hours for a replacement plane. And the army general charged with sexually assaulting a female is accepting a plea deal. The army will drop those asult charges in exchange he will plead guilty to lesser charges but will avoid prison time and wont have to register as a sex offender. And a man who spent some 36 hours trapped at the bottom of a ravine in Southern California is finally been air lifted to safety. He was riding in a truck that skidded off a road friday and plunged some 400 feet killing the driver. No one saw the wreck until sunday. A similar scene playing out in northern california. This time rescuers actually had to save a dog that had somehow become stranded 40 feet down this cliff. That sheriffs deputy dangling 100 feet below his helicopter. Attached a rope to the dogs harness, plucked him off the red sox and rushed him to his owner. And a towering smokestack that once stood along the mississippi river, i say once because thats what happened after nearly a century in existence, crashed to the ground in just seconds in minnesota. The demolition drew big crowds even though officials had asked the public to stay away because of safety concerns. And new york st. Patricks day parade the largest in the world lost a major sponsor overnight. Guiness joined heineken. In a florida courtroom, one that has left a retired Police Officer with a big decision to make. Watch what richard decides to do in court during a drug case. He ate the evidence he was ordered to turn over. Said that paper would have revealed the name of his unanimous source. He has 14 days now to change his mind. Guys . Time now again for the weather. I dont know what its like to come back from a sunny vacation like they were mentioning will and kate. What was that like . Oh, thats right, i did. Oh, thats right. Just moments ago. Just a little bit. Hey, you get your slap of cold this morning as we all do. Were so fortunate washington, d. C. And tantic city, places like
