We have a happy friday. We do. Lets look back in the dressing rooms. Little colin has no idea as we never said what hes here for today. I met him backstage. Hes very excited about being here but his family has been keeping a big secret with us and as youve seen, more than 2 Million People have hit the Facebook Page liking colin wishing him a great day and you will not believe what is in store for him. The party crowd outside. He thinks hes here for a video game segment. Right . He doesnt know. It all started just because his mom wanted him to have a Birthday Party and said he didnt think he had any friends but he sure does. Well have that coming up this morning. Also the clock will spring forward on saturday night. Already. Its 13 days to spring and were starting spring break early live in key west. One of my favorite vacation spots. There is ginger zee. Oh. Perhaps she got a little cup of coffee going out to the pier to watch the sunrise with all her friends. So well be in key west all morning long. Lets get right to the crisis in ukraine caught in the tense standoff between the u. S. And russia. The latest on that tense phone call just hours ago between president obama and president putin. Abcs Alex Marquardt is in kiev right now with the latest. Good morning, alex. Reporter good morning, robin. This was their second lengthy phone call in just the past week. About what the u. S. Calls russias invasion of ukraine. The two leaders seemed to be talking right past each other agreeing on nothing as crimea looks set to try to join russia. Overnight, celebrations in crimea after parliament voted to break away to russia. They vote to be with russia, to be with moscow. Reporter earlier the few who dared protest brutally dragged away. This morning, russia and the u. S. Are digging in ratcheting up their positions over ukraines crimean peninsula, its takeover by russia now all but complete. President obama has slapped russian officials with travel bans and has ordered economic sanctions if russia goes any farther. But crimea will now hold a referendum next weekend to decide whether to join russia, a move the u. S. Calls illegal. Any discussion about the future of ukraine must include the legitimate government of ukraine. Reporter president obama has asked president putin to allow international monitors into crimea blocked yesterday by prorussian forces. On that hourlong phone call, putin told obama that russia cannot ignore calls for help as ukraines new government imposes what putin called entirely illegitimate decisions on to crimea. Weve seen the heavily armed forces believed to be russian blanketing crimea controlling the borders and laying siege to Ukrainian Military bases. While russias navy harasses ukrainian warships. That russian grip on crimea only tightening as fears grow that ukraine is coming apart. Prorussia unrest is spreading throughout eastern ukraine. This as russia prepares their biggest air defense drill near the border of ukraine and the u. S. Sends more fighter jets to its allies and eastern europe, all signs this crisis is growing. George . Certainly rising. Thanks. More on this from abcs chief White House Correspondent jonathan karl. We heard from alex the two president s talking past each other on that phone call. Any movement behind the scenes . Reporter none at all, george. You know, this is an hourlong phone call. Their second in the week and they have resolved absolutely nothing. You heard from the president saying russia Must Withdraw its forces back to its barracks, must begin talks immediately with ukraine. With putin saying that russia has absolutely no choice but to be there to protect ethnic russians from an unconstitutional coup. Only thing they agreed on, not insignificant, they will continue to talk. Okay, meantime, there is a highprofile political conference in washington this week. Youve got the conservatives all stepping in including Chris Christie coming back in public for a feisty speech. Reporter yeah, this is something of a woodstock for conservatives. The biggest gathering well see this year of conservatives and potential republican president ial candidates and ill tell you day one looked a lot like the beginning of a comeback for Chris Christie. After a rough couple of months back home in new jersey, the old Chris Christie seemed to be back. All right. Reporter as feisty and combative as ever. If thats your attitude, mr. President , what the hell are we paying you for . Reporter seen as too moderate by some conservatives. I hope youll join me. Thank you very much. Reporter wasnt even invited last year but this time received a warm reception and a gathering featuring a whos who of potential republican president ial candidates but this is the crowd for tea partyers like ted cruz. His brand of no compromise politics. We need to repeal every single word of obamacare. [ applause ] sir, good to see you. Reporter we asked cruz about that in an exclusive interview for this week. Thats not going to happen while barack obama is president , right . Yeah. State the obvious. Look, i will say this. Its unlikely to happen. Unlikely . Ill give you one scenario where it could. Lets say november of 2014 is an election like 2010 which i think were on the path to be and a tidal wave where republicans dont just win six seats but 10, 11, 12 seats, theres a possibility of that. Reporter pretty remote possibility there, george. Cpac continues today. Theyll be hearing from rand paul, another leading tea partyer and all but certainly president ial candidate. Well also hear from him on sunday on this week. Thats right. Talking to all of them. Have a lot more on this week. Now top stories from amy robach in for josh. Good morning. Good morning, everyone. We begin with gunfire at a crowded mall panicked shoppers were sent running for their lives. At least one shot rang out inside the Shopping Center in memphis. Several men who apparently knew each other were seen arguing. And one pulled a gun. The victim fighting for his life. Four suspects under arrest at this hour. Shoppers hid in stores while police combed the mall making sure it was safe. A potential embarrassment for the pentagon as it tries to address whats been called an epidemic of Sexual Assaults. This morning the armys top sex crimes prosecutor is now being investigated for assault. Lieutenant colonel joseph morse is accused of groping and trying to kiss an army lawyer. Hes been suspended while investigators look that those claims. Meantime, the senate has rejected a bill that would have stripped military commanders of their authority to handle Sexual Assault cases. The bill would have then given that power to military lawyers. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand who sponsored the measure is pushing for another vote this spring. And its being called one of the largest ever medical records theft. Police say in los angeles, a thief made off with computer equipment containing the records of nearly 169,000 patients from los angeles county. The files included Social Security number, billing data and possibly birth dates, as well. And Important News for the millions of americans who are trying to find a job. A new report today giving us a clearer picture of whether the economy is on the right track. Abcs Rebecca Jarvis is here with those details. Rebecca, good morning. Hi, good morning. It was better than expected news on jobs in america this morning. Suggesting the economy is bit stronger than we thought. Take a look. Our economy created 175,000 jobs last month. That is an increase from january, but still short of the numbers that we were seeing last year. The Unemployment Rate picked up slightly to 6. 7 . More people tried to reenter the labor force. The harsh Winter Weather impacted these numbers. The snowstorms and record cold put a real damper on everything from construction to car sales to travel. And analysts estimate more than 600,000 people were unable to work this winter because of bad weather. So amy, there are hopes for a bigger spring recovery that will spring forward with those clocks. 13 days away, rebecca. All right, thanks so much. Well, a bizarre scene during a College Basketball game. An angry Uc Santa Barbara fan ran on to the court to confront the opposing coach. After a technical foul was called, players quickly pushed him back and he was later arrested. This is the third time in the past month that a College Basketball fan has come into violent contact with a player or a coach and the brawl erupted last week in new mexico renewing calls for better security at those games. And finally, an oklahoma man has been rescued after spending two days trapped underground trying to retrieve a 20 bill. The bill slipped out of his hands, fell into that storm drain. He went down after it, how im not quite sure. He got lost in the sewer system. Finally after two days, a group of High School Kids walking by heard his cries for help and called police. He is okay. He never found the 20 bill. Im sorry to say that. By the way he was 15 feet below the street, the pipe, only 42 inches. What . Give that man a 20 bill. What did he find . I know. Thank you. I dont want to know. All right, you two, thank you. The murder trial being watched all around the world, Oscar Pistorius exgirlfriend on the stand this morning with emotional testimony about pistorius and what he was really like. Abcs Hamish Macdonald is in pretoria where he has been in the courtroom every single day. Good morning, hamish. Reporter robin, it is hard to imagine this trial getting any more dramatic but it is. Samantha taylor, the exgirlfriend of Oscar Pistorius has been in the witness stand with this blockbuster testimony. Shes talked about the end of their relationship, she claims it happened when pistorius cheated on her with Reeva Steenkamp. Samantha taylor, a marketing student and parttime model was 18 when she dated the olympian. She testified during their relationship he often carried a gun with him. He carried it around with him. He placed it next to him on the bedside table. Reporter she recalled pistorius firing his gun out of the cars sunroof after a policeman stopped them for speeding. He shouted at the policeman because he said that he was not allowed to touch his gun. Reporter the court had to briefly adjourn this morning when taylor became emotional, recalling their breakup. He cheated on me with Reeva Steenkamp. Reporter the defense claims they will produce emails between taylor and pistorius to show them he did not cheat. We had not officially broken up at that time. What does it mean that you have not officially broken up . There was a lot of commotion in our relationship. Reporter she refutes the defense claim that pistorius sounds like a woman when he screams. Its a crucial fact because so many neighbors say they heard a woman screaming the night Reeva Steenkamp was killed. If he screams and hes anxious, he sounds like a woman . That is not true. He sounds like a man. Reporter well, what were starting to see now is a very clear picture painted, robin, by the prosecution of Oscar Pistorius as an angry perhaps reckless man, someone that is eager to grab his gun when hes scared, when hes afraid or annoyed. Hamish, thank you very much. Joining us now with more on the powerful testimony in the trial abcs chief Legal Affairs anchor dan abrams. You heard the ex. What do you make of her testimony . Well, this is very important. You hear the prosecutors able to bring in evidence both about the firearms charge and murder charge so throughout this prosecution case were seeing both of those come together. If there wasnt a firearms charge here you might not be able to hear all of this evidence about his propensity to use guns so allows the prosecutors to be saying to the judge, not only do we think that he committed murder and heres why, but this is a guy who didnt just have guns, this is a guy who used guns and so that allows prosecutors i think an advantage because of the types of charges youre hearing here. The exgirlfriend also says something very interesting. He was often afraid of an intruder. That helped the defense. Right. That is the defense here. That he was afraid all the time and thats helpful, but the prosecutions been presenting a pretty powerful case. The most important witnesses were hearing from the prosecution are these ear and eyewitnesses who live nearby meaning all of them saying they see the same sequence and that is argument, followed by bullets and if thats the case, Oscar Pistorius is in a lot of trouble because hes saying there was no argument. I was the one screaming and thats why you hear the questions about could it have been him who was screaming and people are saying, no, i heard a woman screaming. Very important testimony from the prosecution. Extremely emotional these last couple of days as you would imagine. Dan, thanks so much. Okay, guy, thank you. To the hunt for a possible serial killer just outside washington, d. C. Police in alexandria, virginia are saying three highprofile murders, one in the last month, may all be linked. And Abcs David Kerley is on the scene with the latest. Reporter two killings in the past six months and one ten years ago could all be linked say police with new ballistic reports. The bullets have the same general rifling class and characteristics similar in design for all cases. Reporter police cant say definitively they came from the same gun but there are so many other similarities. In these cases. The piano teacher killed when she opened her door at lunchtime. Back in november, a local transit official killed at his home and the connection back to the real estate agent, ten years ago, and the wife of the sheriff who was also gunned down at home during the day. All three active in the community. All three killings within two miles of each other in alexandria, virginia. The connections are chilling for residents. I dont like the fact that theres a serial killer out there. Scary, of course. Reporter the man they are looking for, white, balding and bearded. Police wont talk about motive but former fbi profiler and abc news consultant brad garrett believes the suspect has a grudge with the city. He believes in his mind these three people represent the city of alexandria and the city has wronged him and hes going to make it right. Reporter since the killing of piano teacher Ruthanne Lodato residents have been keeping locksmiths busy installing peepholes and the police chief says residents do need to be vigilant. If any of you are suspicious of anything, please dont open your door. Call the police. Reporter since that piano teacher was killed at that door behind me there have been 500 tips given to police. The fbi is involved but so far just the sketch of the man would could be a serial killer. George. Yeah, a lot of tension there in alexandria. Thanks very much. We switch gears. Oreos in court. Oh, yeah, this is very serious, george. Talking espionage at the highest level. Coke has a secret formula. Kfc, famous blend of herbs and spices but oreos too have a secret at the center of a huge courtroom battle. I prefer the cream part of an oreo. Thats crazy, the cookie is the best part. Cream. Cookie. Cream. Reporter the cookie or the cream. A longstanding debate but turns out theres much more to their delicious middle than meets the eye and its worth millions. The secret ingredient that just put the worlds topselling cookie in the middle of an International Espionage case. Its a special formula added to the vanilla cream that makes it the perfect shade of white. Titanium dioxide. Reporter the name not very appetizing, titanium dioxide, dupont patented a way to use it for whitening paper, plastic, paints and, yes, oreo cream. Two american businessmen were just convicted by a federal jury for conspiring to steal and sell that top secret method to a rival Chinese Company for more than 20 million. Robert maegerle and walter liew were found guilty of theft of trade secrets and obstruction of justice and economic espionage. It was important for the u. S. Government to bring. A shot heard around the world and a message to Foreign Companies and foreign governments that they can no longer spy on u. S. Companies. Reporter the fbi says we will aggressively pursue anyone, anywhere who attempts to steal valuable information from the united states. Valuable info like what helps make this so darned good. Shut the front door. Reporter now facing up to 25 years in prison, you could say these two spies just got creamed. Oh. The question is, they got 25 years. Would they have gotten 50 if they had gone for the double stuffed . I knew it. We saw her going there. The windup was oh, no. Oh, no. Robin, well be following up on this story. Im sure you will. Also coming up, a Movie Theater owners true confession the tricks theaters are using to get you to spend more and more money at the movies and theres a big clue right there. Whatever theyre doing is working. What youre eating, what youre drinking, major markups. We begin with the latest on the trial of a socialite accused of killing her exhusband with a car bomb. Revealing voice mails heard in court for the first time on thursday. Abcs ryan owens is tracking the case from tucson. Good morning, ryan. Reporter good morning to you, george. 18 years after that car bombing at this country club and gated community, today the state will rest later today. And theyre ending with what they believe is some of their strongest evidence. Pam phillips own words. I wanted to tell you thank you cause youre a great friend. Reporter the voice mails start out sweet but grow desperate fast. The other thing is it looks like the money is gone. Reporter its the first time the jury has heard the voice of accused murderer pam phillips in a series of messages she left for her onetime boyfriend convicted hit man ron young. Im not able to send you any more money. I mean theres, you know, we need to talk about this. Reporter prosecutors say the 56yearold agreed to pay young 400,000 to kill her exhusband gary triano. Young kept his part of the ar gain and is now serving life in prison for planting a fatal pipe bomb in the real state Developers Car at this country club back in 1996. I remember saying to him, oh, my gosh, she really did it. Reporter even though pam phillips got the 2 million Life Insurance policy with a new home in aspen and globetrotting vacations, those millions didnt last. The Monthly Payments to the hit man dried up. A frustrated young started recording their conversations. You know what, im just aggravated. Would you just leave me alone. Just leave me alone. Im bothering you . Right now you are. Ive got to go. Ive got kids down at the pool. I have to be back for company at 4 00. Well, you bothered me for some help so you could get rich, so will you leave me alone . Goodbye. Reporter phillips never admits to committing a crime on these tapes and shes pleaded not guilty. When you sit in a womens prison for murder, you know, you are going to be really sad. Im going to be back at 4. No youre going to be in prison for murder. Reporter the tapes end the states case. The defense should begin later today. Among their first witnesses ed kinnear, father of oscar nominated actor greg kinnear who ironically plays a criminal defense attorney in his new fox series rake. The states case took all of two weeks, the defense is expected to take at least twice that long. They have an astounding 103 witnesses on their witness list. George . Wow, a lot to get through. Okay, ryan, thanks very much. Abcs chief Legal Affairs anchor dan abrams back with us right here. Pretty powerful cap to the prosecutions case. Those voice mails. Absolutely. Getting to hear her own voice. She doesnt actually confess on those tapes but she certainly makes incriminating statements. This is the key to the prosecutions case. They need to link her back to ron young because, remember, shes not alleged to have actually been there or planted the bomb. Shes the one who they say ordered it. So the key is linking her with audiotapes, with records, with things that were found in youngs van, et cetera. So pretty strong link. What does the defense do now . Over 100 witnesses . Why . Because they want to point the finger at someone, anyone else. The key to the defense is going to be, look at all these other people who hated this guy. Look at all these other people who were involved in business deals gone awry with this guy. What about this possible suspect and that possible suspect . They want to present reasonable doubt. When i first heard, you know, the idea at the beginning of the case theyll have all these witnesses, what will they do. Then im thinking okay. They want to a million i dont think theyll call all 103 witnesses, by the way. This has been tried in civil court and she lost. Thats right. In the civil court it was a personal case meaning you have the government against her. So very different standard of proof, but shes seen all this evidence before her again. And she lost in the civil court and this is going to be a very tough case for her to win in the criminal court, as well. Okay, dan abrams, thanks very much. Back in the next half hour, jury is out again. Jury is out. Triple duty. Boy. Getting our moneys worth out of you, dan abrams. Kids and weddings coming up. Youre teasing jurys out. Wow. I love it. I love it. Now to one womans search for her biological mother. 27 years after she was left in a burger king bathroom she says shes not angry. She just has questions and wants answers. Reporter now more than a decade after learning the truth, deprill wants to know more about her background like her medical history. She says shes not angry. We go to our undercover dating experiment revealing the secrets of dating trying to answer the question of what men and women really want in a relationship and abcs juju chang has our story. Reporter were at the world bar in new york city for a speed dating event. Eight men, seven women and just eight minutes to decide if theres a love connection. But what no one knows is today theres a ringer in their midst. Meet lindsay, a professional actress. Generally a guy interested in you for your looks doesnt ask you any questions. Just kind of like, hey. Reporter tonight we asked her to be not just beautiful but obnoxious. My friends call me the goddess. Reporter shes not going to make it easy. Mike is taken aback. Isnt that like a witchcraft thing the godess . Reporter but mike takes it right in stride. From what im getting from you is not arrogance. Reporter when she lays her gold digging line on this guy i want to meet a guy that, you know, i can he can take care of me. Reporter he plays it cool. Making it happen. Yes. But sugar daddy is the right way, you know, like in half. I got it. No. For me, yes. For you, yes. Reporter although this guy actually tries to talk her out of it. Wouldnt you be bored if you didnt have anything to do all day . Im not going to sit around eating bonbons. Reporter with nearly 40 of american singles looking for love online relationship coach donna barnes says men just cant help themselves. It all starts visually for a man as far as attraction. Reporter you say visual. I say shallow. When we tallied up the results three men thought lindsay was worth a second date but trevor was one of five who wanted no part of lindsay. I just thought she was a gold digger. Reporter giving women everywhere some hope that men arent completely driven by looks alone. There are a lot of women who are gold diggers and if she was a little bit more obvious about it than most. Reporter for Good Morning America, juju chang, abc news, new york. Uncovered right there. But we got dan abrams back with us and time for the jury is out. Going to tackle all the hot topics across the internet. What will riling you up today . Is it okay to bring a baby to a ski resort . Yes. One Colorado Hotel guest was fuming at her noisy neighbor after she says she was woken up throughout the night so she left a nasty note that said thank for bringing a screaming baby to a ski resort. Babies dont ski. I never brought my babies to places like this. I was considerate of others, not selfish. Now, initially i was going to say i think the woman with the note has a point. My girlfriend went crazy on me saying, what are you talking about . These are public places. Rent a house if you dont like it. I dont know. There are hotels i will say that dont allow children under the age of 12 for that very reason. You said you wouldnt bring your baby. I never did. To Something Like that because i do feel like i would feel very nervous if my baby started crying. I would feel bad for the people next to me. If you go to a ski resort, babies cant ski. The hotels should have thick enough walls for babies. Shouldnt be that big a deal and the mother should and the father should keep the babies as quiet as they can but of course they can bring the baby. Why didnt the person instead of writing a note, why not go to the door and say or could have gone to her room and yelled wah. Heres what we got. We got on facebook, heidi says no, and if i am in a room next to a crying baby all night long they should pay for my room for that night and each and every night i will be disturbed from my sleep by a wailing baby. Wow. Kathy says yes, ive been kept awake by drunk, loud, rude adults. At least a baby has an excuse of being a baby. Whats the adults excuse . Good point. The more you read the internet, you realize theres a lot of angry people. Next up, why is attending a wedding gotten so expensive . Costs a couple between 490 to 540 per couple to go to a wedding. 36 of people now say that theyve gone into debt to attend a wedding. All right. My take in particular if you have a Destination Wedding where you make your friends go somewhere far, i think that you have to offer to pay particularly for people who cant afford it. I think people are put in tough situations all the time. You say making. Youre not making them. Youre inviting them. They dont have to go. The guilt no, but i think if sometimes well, i have a lot friends having milestone birthdays and getting ourselves to these locations not to be revealed. And then the person who is having the birthday is supplying the accommodations and giving us a group rate. A group rate. Weddings are expensive. It would be really hard to pay for all of your guests. Do it local. If you can afford it and family members that cant, i would say smaller wedding. Maybe they dont want you there. And if you find out ahead of time thats why people do it. You find out ahead of time and pay for it and be like your vacation, as well. Kim kelly said if youre going to go into debt by attending the wedding maybe its time you sat down and reevaluate your priorities. I wouldnt go into debt for my own wedding. Many katia said yes, and ive been a bridesmaid it can cost you a fortune. I have to lie every time a wedding comes up. That seems like a lot. You know what the average wedding in new york city costs to throw . What would you guess . 75,000. Whoa. 76,000. Wow. Lara spencer. Ladies and gentlemen, lara spencer. Average . New york state. New york state legislator proposing a law forcing parents to take four parents classes on issues such as bullying and physical and Emotional Abuse by the time their child graduates sixth grade. Dont take it and your kid does not go to seventh grade. Thats crazy. Yeah. My mother always said she took Parenting Classes and i mean didnt really turn out so well for her. I agree with because i think mandatory . I did that just voluntarily because i wanted i think its great information if it can educate, im torn but i think working all day and i think it could be suggested. Highly encouraged. Yes. Lets do we got twitter on this. Kai williams speaking as a pediatric nurse, yes, if you could only see some of the situations these innocent kids are in. Finally our gma flash poll we did on this one. What do you think . Okay or no way . 65 of people said okay. Im surprised by that. To require this for its an epidemic. I think a lot of people feel there are bad parents out there. Thank you, dan. Talking about some angry people out there. There are some really great people out there, as well because now to our big surprise for 10yearold colin whos unknowingly become a viral sensation.
