Lupita, oscar winner up off her feet. Amy adams. Meryl streep. Oh, yeah. It was a moment. Equally remarkable moments backstage. Get down with your bad self, amy. The stars took the questions from facebook. This was not planned of the hundreds of questions that Matthew Mcconaughey could have picked, wait until you see which one he picked. No matter what, you know hell answer it honestly. All right, all right, all right. Also a lot of heads turning on the red carpet. Dramatic dresses really standing out. Cate blanchett, angelina jolie. Both just shined so bright on that red carpet. All kinds of highlights ahead. First we want to get to the latest on this massive storm back east. Our extreme weather team tracking the latest on the winter blast affecting tens of millions right now. Ginger, what do you got . This storm started here. It started as record rains in parts of los angeles, other parts of california, too. But its on the move. All that energy has its target on washington, d. C. , parts of west virginia, kentucky. This thing is not just snow, its sleet and a whole lot of mess. Lets get to gio. Hell bring us the rest of the story. Good morning, gio. Reporter hey, ginger, good morning to you from the famous rocky steps. You can see these plows working here in philadelphia. Were seeing a mix of snow and sleet here in philly. And all across the nation, an icy mess. Take a look. This morning, blinding snow. And pounding sleet. Talk about sleet coming down. Reporter attacking half the nation. From texas to oklahoma [ thunder claps ] groundshaking thunder snow. And this rare sight in norman, oklahoma. Thunder sleet lightning. In southern illinois, car windshields transforming into blinding sheets of solid ice. In wichita, kansas, an ice road nightmare. Hundreds of weatherrelated accidents leading to at least eight deaths. In arkansas, this suv losing control and plunging right off a bridge injuring two and killing one. This semi in oklahoma city, overturning and ripping open. The irony, it was hauling cat litter, often used for melting ice. On that same highway, countless vehicles crippled by unbearably slick conditions. This car was sliding. They asked if i could reverse. I couldnt even reverse. If i reversed and hit this car in front of me. Reporter its part of the same system that caused this 100car black ice pileup in denver on saturday, killing one person. You have to be careful out there. All of us out in this know it has been an incredibly snowy winter. But just here in philadelphia weve seen more than five feet of snow so far this winter. Ginger, back to you. So far above average, it feels like the winter that will never end. It will. By tonight, this storm moves on. But before it does so, here is what you can expect additional, on top of what you already have. Say you have two, three inches of sleet, yeah, you could get some snow on top and then really record colds this morning, robin that are coming right in everywhere from kansas city, sub zero. Were missing that. As you know, ginger, some parts of the country bracing for the snow. Others are getting covered in ice. Alex perez is in louisville, kentucky, with more on that. Good morning, alex. Reporter good morning, robin. Thats right. Ice is the problem in many parts of the south. Theres concerns that ice buildup on power lines could lead to massive power outages. Of course in this kind of weather, ice can form just about anywhere. I want you to look behind me here. On this pedestrian bridge. Those are isocals all along that bridge created by this storm. There is ice on the roadways. Many people are waking up to find their cars are coated in ice just like this. Just another problem that people are dealing with. Now, authorities have closed schools in the area and theyre asking anyone who does not have to leave their home to do them a favor and stay inside their houses. Robin . Good advice. Thank you, alex. Ice and snow means a lot of flight cancellations. David kerley has the latest from Reagan National airport there in washington. Good morning, david. Reporter good morning, robin, to you. Here is the good news. Theyve been able to keep the runways clear here. Its starting to snow harder. Heres the bad news here at Reagan National. Look at the gates. All through this airport, there are no aircraft. So nobody is going anywhere. Already this morning we have seen 2,000 cancellations. Expect that number to rise as we get through the day. Heres what were seeing around airports across the country. Theyre deicing planes in all these areas that are cold that you have heard from. Philadelphia, up the east coast, in the ohio valley as well. Does this seem like its been happening a lot . Well, it has. Here are the latest stats. This year alone we have had more cancellations in the First Six Months of last year and nine months of 2012. And robin, i dont know about people in los angeles who may want to fly east, might be little bit difficult later today. Youre looking at five people that are going to face that. But thats okay, david. My point exactly. Okay. We appreciate that very much. Boy, he looks so cold out there. Were going to move to the latest on the crisis in ukraine. Russian troops are settling in after taking control of crimea over the weekend. As president obama and the west face growing pressure to act its become the most serious confrontation with russia since the cold war. Financial markets dropping all over the world. Terry moran is on the ground in ukraine right now. Good morning, terry. Reporter good morning, george. Russian forces are in complete control of this part of the ukraine, the crimean peninsula. And they are giving every sign that they are here to stay. Its all like a bad dream from the soviet past. Russian forces in the thousands seizing territories. Armored vehicles lining the roads. The russian navy pouring in more forces. And ukraines outgunned, outnumbered troops imprisoned on their own bases. By stone, silent russian soldiers. The big question now, can Vladimir Putin get away with it . Secretary of state kerry told George Stephanopoulos there will be a tough response from u. S. And allies. Russia may be able to invade crimea. But in the end, russia will isolate itself. Reporter already, the markets are punishing putin with the ruble, russias currency, plunging to alltime lows. But the deed is done. Here in crimea, most people have welcomed the Russian Troops rejecting the prowestern revolution in the other half of their country last week. Its calm on the surface. But as we spoke with a Woman Holding a ukrainian flag a tiny gesture of defiance against russia, we saw the fierce passions just below the surface. Civil war is now a real possibility in ukraine. Diplomacy with the russians in control here is where the action is. President obama struggling to come up with some kind of approach that is creative enough to diffuse the tensions and Strong Enough to get russia to back down. There is no sign of that, george, right now. Vladimir putin is getting what he wants. Thats right. Secretary kerry going to be there in ukraine tomorrow. Thank you, terry. I was so touched by the wizard of oz tribute. Singing out loud, singing it proud with pink. I know. Talking to Steve Mcqueen, had to have been a half hour afterwards, he was still barely there. You could see him having a complete and total outofbody experience. That might last a long time. I think it will. Remember, they didnt know if it would be their movie or would it be gravity. It was a tossup. I think the academy got it right. Gravity got the awards it should have. And 12 years a slave theirs. And the two stars of Dallas Buyers Club just perfect on and off screen.
