And the hockey shocker with gold at stake as the american women lose a late lead and fall to arch rival canada in overtime. Now bobsledding sensation johnny quinn actually gets ready to take to the track. Good morning, america we do say good morning, america, on this friday morning. Team usa now with matching gold medals in the olympic debut of ski halfpipe. Maddie bowman, who has been skiing since 2, at the ripe old age of 20 winning gold. The youngest american to win gold. Boy, i tell you what, the look on her face last night. Of course, crazy day in sochi. That finish to the womens olympic hockey final, canada taking down the u. S. Women in gutting fashion. And raising the stakes, if you could, even higher today as the u. S. Men now prepare for their semifinal against canada. That puck will drop in just a few hours. Fair to say these will be in seats for that. You got it. First, we want to get to the Severe Weather. A storm front wreaking havoc from illinois all the way to alabama and it is on the move. It is. We are looking at a current radar, so you can see the impressive lightning strikes all the way from virginia really down to the florida panhandle. Severe thunderstorm watch from tallahassee up through western south carolina. So weve got a lot to talk about this morning. But look what happened just hours ago in alabama. Northern alabama weve got ft. Payne, pictures of twisted semis some thrown on top of buildings all part of more than 300 Severe Weather reports including 13 tornadoes reported in illinois, one of them in mechanicsburg, illinois. And that is where alex perez is this morning with all of the stunning pictures. Alex . Reporter well, good morning, ginger. The winds still howling. That brief warmup across the midwest yesterday came at a big price. Parts of illinois waking up to damage just like this. The wind so strong here it completely ripped this Storage Building to shreds. A terrifying and rare sight. Wintertime twisters tearing through illinois. And early this morning in alabama this semitrailer picked up and slammed into the side of a building. Emergency workers are still assessing the damage. A number of people taken to the hospital. Tornadoes this far north are rare at this time of year and double trouble in a region where snow is still on the ground. Just a few miles from one reported twister in concord, illinois, this fiery 20car pileup on a snowslicked road as lightning struck in nashville. In rochester, minnesota, a cell phone transformer blowing up in the snowstorm. Heavy winds blew this semi right off the road. In plymouth, michigan, heavy snow and ice collapsed this mans garage. Well be back tomorrow to start cutting it all apart. Reporter in Oklahoma City wind gusts in excess of 60 miles per hour. Its crazy. Reporter slamming shopping carts into car after car. In huron county, michigan, crews using dynamite to break up ice dams on this river and prevent flooding. Finally in minneapolis, blizzard conditions hampering roads and runways. At minneapolis st. Paul airport, the snow falling so fast, crews couldnt keep up. So the cleanup here hasnt even started yet, but the good news is there are no reports of any injuries. But the weather roller coaster is not done just yet. The midwest now bracing for plunging temperatures and return of the bitter cold. Ginger . Youre so right. Often in the spring these types of tornado outbreaks then and Severe Weather outbreaks followed by severe cold. But here is what i wanted to show you today. From southern new jersey all the way to jacksonville, florida, that is who has to be on alert. Damaging wind, hail and isolated tornadoes. Robin . Such a large portion like that. All right, thank you, ginger. Now to those fastmoving developments in ukraine. News now of a deal for elections as the president tries to defuse the violent crisis there. The country of 46 million torn between protesters who want western freedom and the police enforcing ukraine linked to russia. Abcs Hamish Macdonald is live in kiev with the latest developments there this morning. Hamish, good morning. Reporter yeah, good morning to you, robin. This is the moment that ukraine must decide its future. Will it descend further towards civil war or can it find a political solution . This hour the president says he will be signing with the opposition a deal to bring about early elections, but as that is happening were hearing reports of fresh gunfire unconfirmed in the square. Theyre chanting no deal. Protesters are calling it a massacre. Watch as uniformed snipers pick off their targets from a distance. This is the moment a government turns on its own people with lethal force. Two days ago this was a hotel lobby. Today a field hospital. The injured are treated on the floor and left alongside the dead. They were killed by very high professionals. The bullets come directly to heart, to neck, to lungs. Reporter police too are suffering casualties. Each side has its victims. Its now pretty much a clear run from the front line up the hill to the Parliament Building but weve just been told if we want to walk it carry a press card above your head because snipers are lining the rooftops. Ukraine is locked in a battle for its own future. Does it choose europe, america, western values or its nearest and biggest neighbor, russia . The bloodshed is pushing ordinary people to extreme and violent limits and there may be no turning back. Josh, the reality is there is so much at stake here and the coming hours will be perhaps the most crucial this countrys faced so far. And, of course, well be with you throughout. Hamish, thank you very much for that. Of course, especially stunning those pictures for whats happening just across the border in russia. Sochi to be precise. To the olympics where, again, it was a stunning day on the ice in both figure skating and hockey and our amy robach once again tracking all of it from our gma headquarters right there at our olympics desk. Amy, once again, good morning to you. And good morning to you, josh. It was a historic but controversial night at the iceberg skating palace. The hometown crowd cheering on its gold medal in figure skating. But millions worldwide crying foul. An unbelievable upset now sending shock waves around the world. Listen to this prorussian crowd. Reporter even after this major stumble russias Adelina Sotnikova took home the gold on home turf. Dethroning south koreas yuna kim, the defending Gold Medalist, despite her seemingly immaculate performance. A performance for the ages. Reporter the unexpected outcome prompting nearly 100,000 people per minute to sign a petition online overnight demanding an investigation. The now roughly 1. 5 million petitioners outraged two of the skating judges reportedly have russian ties. One said to be married to the director of the russian figure skating federation. Reporter team usa suffering a heartbreaking loss in overtime, a miracle on ice moment just inches out of reach. And the puck goes down and hits the goal post reporter up by one, team usa hitting the post on the open net then this. Scores reporter with 54 seconds on the clock, canada ties it, winning in overtime. We didnt train as hard as we could for second place. Reporter while up in the mountains american favorite Maddie Bowman soaring to the first ever gold medal in womens sky halfpipe. And now lets get to the latest news and we have to salute the womens hockey team. What an incredible run to silver and the u. S. Olympic committee is honoring them by naming julie chu flag bearer for the closing ceremonies. It is so well deserved and the mens team, by the way is after revenge now. Taking on team canada in the hockey semifinals, the puck drops in just a few short hours. And we will be watching the mountains at rosa khutor when americas new phenom Mikaela Shiffrin goes for a slalom gold. The 18yearold from colorado was wowing the ski world this season. Shes taking three of the six world cup races, she says she uses visualization to prepare for races and for the slalom, she tells us shes been picturing herself on the podium. We will have to see if that picture comes to life. Guys, i am picturing myself back in new york city very soon, so hope to see you there. Robin. Youve been doing a great job there, amy, well welcome you home with open arms. Thank you. Back with you in just a moment. Lets bring in sasha cohen who is here with us in new york and our dear friend at espn, julie foudy who is live from sochi. Sasha, let me begin with you. Figure skating, wow. What do you make of what happened last night . Well, the americans were good. It was disappointing they didnt get a medal but they werent good enough. Gracie fell and ashley had a cheated double footed combination which really hurt her in the technical score. Adelina had superior jumps and spins and all those points just racked up. If you look at the breakdown you can see she deserved to win that night. We heard in amys report theres some controversy with the judging, in fact, american Ashley Wagner, she sent this on yahoo people dont want to watch a sport where you see people fall down and somehow score above someone who goes clean. What did you think about the judging . As gracie knows skating, a clean jump counts for a lot. If you double foot and cheat a jump, 30 of your score is knocked down. If that adds up over a program you could see why someone who falls but does Everything Else cleanly comes out ahead of thats why we have a breakdown. Thats why the system changed when i was still competing from 6. 0 system to these high inflated numerical values because each element has a value and grade of execution. So you have transparency. See, once again, you just break it down for us like that, sasha, thank you. Lets get now to julie and, julie, come on team usa against canada. Once again, going down to the final moments. They were leading throughout. Losing in overtime like that. You have to know how difficult that must be for them. I mean, congratulations with the silver but as we heard, thats of little consolation to them. Oh, robin, it was gut wrenching. You know the thing is you got the sense when you were sitting there, United States and as you mentioned, canada has had this choke hold on the gold medal winning the last three olympics but got the sense finally this team and this time it was going to be different. They were up 3 30, 3 30 to go up by 2 goals and then it all started to unravel. Give credit to the canadians they came roaring back. It was mariephilip poulin, the canadian who scored the two goals against the u. S. In vancouver did it again last night and it was just a gutwrencher. Tears all over the ice afterwards, of course. Thats understandable. Men, semifinal action, u. S. Versus canada. How do you see that . Its the part two of this competition, the semifinal and as we know a lot of nhl pros, some of them teammates now going against each other country to country but i think the High Pressure here is the beer thats being wagered. President obama with Prime Minister harper, i think that puts all the pressure on them. You heard about that over there too, huh . Okay, julie. How did i know you would . Of course, we did. All right, julie, hey, thanks, as always. Appreciate that. Sasha, as well. Well get more of your thoughts later in the morning. Thank you. Patriotic fandom good for the soul, tough on the ticker especially right now. All right, we turn to news about another olympian.
