mother made him do it. and an ice skating shocker. the 15-year-old phenom falls as america's women are in the hunt for medals and the u.s. men's hockey team makes quick work of the czech republic. next up, o canada. and the bobsled bonanza. two u.s. teams medal in the same event as we say -- >> good morning, america. we do say good morning, america. great to have josh here by my side. george is off today. ryan smith coming in off the bench. >> oh. >> thank you very much. >> you're not scared. >> no, josh taught me everything i know. >> now we're scared. hey, you know, today is a big day for the american women in the hunt for figure skating medals over there in sochi. big chills and spills there on the ice, all three americans still in contention. >> yeah, a tough day for the mother country yesterday. also, more gold this morning. if that's how you want it, one winning ticket sold in the $400 million plus powerball lottery. numbers drawn wednesday night, 1, 17, 35, 49, 54 and the powerball, 34. >> oh, so close. >> someone on the west coast is going to wake up mighty happy this morning. but as the world focuses on sochi and explosion of violence overnight across russia's border in nearby ukraine where the battle over the future of that country is heating up. >> between those loyal to the whole of europe and those loyal to russia. this is what's happening now, at least 22 people killed in this latest round of fighting. these deaths coming just after a truce in ukraine's political crisis collapsed. the two sides now again as robin just said fighting over the country's very future as thousands of protesters stake their lives on a desire for real political change. >> oh, it is such a scene over there. these are live pictures right now of independence square in kiev. one of our own producers just fired upon over there. abc's bruno roeber has the latest. >> reporter: as the sun rose in kiev this morning, a fresh and horrifying round of violence unfolded. i was able to watch from my hotel room as ranks of police fired on protesters carrying little more than sticks and makeshift shields. they fell where they stood. i saw at least seven protesters shot. the wounded were dragged away while hoisted on to makeshift gurneys. the lobby in our hotel was turned into a field hospital and morgue. scores of bodies have been laid out under sheets by the reception desk. the number keeps rising. security forces have taken up positions on the upper floors of our hotel, as well and shooting down at protesters from there. journalists have been targeted. matt mcgarry was hit by two rounds that came in his window. all talk of cease-fire has all but disappeared. the clashes can be heard around the hotel and echo across the city. protesters are erecting new fortifications and police responding with machine guns and flash grenades. uneasy, tense calm has ascended on kiev but we're hearing reports that police in the west of the country have gone over to the opposition groups, which is good news for the opposition, but a possible harbinger -- ominous harbinger of things to come moving forward. robin? >> our thanks to you bruno and concern for you and all those in harm's way. and to washington now. jim avila is at the white house. those fast-moving developments in ukraine being closely monitored there this morning. good morning, jim. >> reporter: good morning, robin. the president returned home to the white house early this morning from mexico to all that bad news. overnight, there was a press conference before he left the summit in which he seemed to be skeptical about the newly announced truce but hopeful, but now that that's all fallen apart, the president's earlier strong words to the government of ukraine seemed to stand. >> there will be consequences if people step over the line. and that includes making sure that the ukrainian military does not step in to what should be a set of issues that can be resolved by civility. >> reporter: the president says america is watching closely to what's going on in kiev and they will coordinate with the allies, the european allies. robin? >> what is the next step there, jim, with the white house? >> reporter: already the white house is set upon some small sanctions against the ukraine, some sanctions about visas, people able to travel from the ukraine to the united states but the next step, probably more serious sanctions in coordination with the european allies. >> all right, jim, thanks so much. >> of course, we'll have all the fast breaking news here on abc. return now to a new warning for air travelers this morning. the department of homeland security issued an alert about a possible shoe bomb attack. abc's pierre thomas following the story for us this morning. good morning, to you, pierre. >> reporter: good morning, josh. today u.s. authorities are warning the airlines that terrorists are refocused on finding ways to blow commercial planes out of the sky. sources tell abc news new credible intelligence obtained from overseas suggests that terrorist bombmakers have stepped up efforts to build shoe bombs to design liquid explosives and to hide them in cosmetic containers, the goal, to smuggle bombs on commercial international flights. no specific plot has been identified but the threat is being taken seriously. passengers flying to the u.s. from overseas can expect to see additional pat-downs and extra scrutiny of their shoes and carry-on items. >> i think aviation symbolizes something to al qaeda, the idea that you can take down a plane and kill potentially hundreds of people, both that are on the plane and on the ground is very appealing. >> reporter: in some ways this is security deja vu. in december 2001 only three months after 9/11, richard reid boarded a u.s.-bound plane with 197 passengers with plastic explosives built into the heel of his shoe. the bomb failed to detonate when he tried to set it afire. but this simulation shows what it could have done. the attempts to take down planes continued. there was the london-based liquid explosives plot to blow up u.s.-bound planes over the atlantic. the underwear bomber trying to take down a plane on christmas day over detroit. with thousands of americans about to head home from the sochi olympics you can see why authorities are taking no chances. robin? >> absolutely, pierre, thanks. to the latest on the severe weather, a flood watch in a number of states and now the threat of tornadoes, always something, ginger zee. >> always something. we have to check in on chicago area. this morning, they've had everything, not just something. they've had some sleet, slush on the ground the snow is still there. heavy thunderstorms but lightning. and then of course some snow reported around. that's the beginning of the stormy area. watch this, this is what happens. kansas city had storms earlier this morning. the cold front erupts, this afternoon and evening. we're talking dinner time. it's from columbus, ohio, indianapolis included, southern illinois, western tennessee and of course kentucky all the way down through the gulf. jackson, mississippi, new orleans all included. strong winds, tornado and hail. this has to go somewhere and id does, atlantic city to the panhandle of florida. josh? "first sochi selfie as a silver medalist with lauryn williams." signing the wall of u.s. medalists. williams has been there before winning a silver in athens in the 100 meters. >> that's when you know you are a true athlete. you can do anything. bring it on. >> and how. >> yeah. >> i got this. >> well, you know who has this now. >> who? >> our ryan smith. >> there you go, all right. thank you, josh. let's take a look at some of the top stories today. and, you know, let's start with this, that monster, monster $425 million powerball jackpot, this morning somebody is waking up very, very rich because there was only one winner. and we've just learned where that ticket was sold. abc's aditi roy is in milpitas, california, near san jose. aditi, good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you, ryan. this gas station is abuzz with excitement. that winning ticket was sold right here at this chevron gas station in this sleepy silicon valley town. this is the sixth largest lottery prize in u.s. history, the fourth largest in powerball history ever and, of course, now the big question remains, who is that incredibly lucky winner?
