america's women grab gold and bronze. as the showdown in sochi looms, two of america's best skiers ever, bode and ted finally about to face off. and good morning, america. boy, you see the snow on the lens this morning. boy, a lot to celebrate in sochi for team usa today. gold, silver, and bronze in men's slopestyle. only the third time the u.s. has ever swept the medals in an olympic winter games event. >> you said the winter games. it seems more like the summer games there. we want to look at the pictures right now. look at that. you know -- >> a little contrast. >> a little bit. we're -- 61 over there, 30 here. and you -- well, they're in t-shirts over there. >> and matt gutman went for a swim yesterday. a little bit different. let's get to the storm. it's socking so much of the east coast right now. a live shot just outside of philadelphia. that area could get more than a foot of snow today. >> ginger zee is leading the extreme weather team. she's got coverage up and down the coast, including philadelphia. let's get outside to snowy times square. ginger? >> we have plenty. some of the heaviest snow falling now and in the next couple of hours. it will transition to sleet and eventually rain. a real classic nor'easter. let me show you what happened earlier in washington, d.c. this is video from just a couple of hours ago, and it was heavy, blinding snow. you should see the capital. you can hardly. they've had almost a foot already. that's if washington, d.c., and those heavy snow totals are move, north. here's what you can expect on top of what you already have. look at this graphic with me here. west of d.c., heavy stuff. and especially west of the i-95 corridor. that coastal part is what i'm concerned mixing in. the radar right now, it's not only snowing heavy along that line, but look at this. we move south to atlanta, where it is still snowing. that's right. the back end of it. exactly where we have our steve osunsami on the travel nightmares from there through the carolinas. >> reporter: good morning, ginger. this small iceberg a rare sight in atlanta. so is the snow that's falling. this city is shut down. the few snowplows they have here are out clearing the roads. hard to believe the pictures from north carolina highways this morning. drivers stuck on the ice all night. it looked just like atlanta two weeks ago, when two inches of snow, and some would say poor planning, led to this. overnight, out-of-control cars. trucks, fire, and ice holding up rescue vehicles. like this ambulance in atlanta. the neighbors had to get out with their shoes and dust pans to clear a path. >> go, go, go! >> reporter: and this fire truck in raleigh. whiteouts caused spinouts. these trucks nearly colliding. some drivers giving up and walking away from their cars. the national guard is working 24/7 as a miserable mix of snow, ice, and rain hug the east coast. hundreds of thousands of families are without power. and the snow is not the only thing falling. >> terrifying. hearing the tree crack and watching it fall from my window and landing on my daughter's room was very traumatic. >> reporter: roofs are giving way, too. >> i was out here playing with my kids. the next thing i know, i saw the roof caved in. >> reporter: live wires are breaking in two. it's from the sheer weight of the ice. >> my house was shaking. >> this storm is unpredictable. it's one of the toughest storms we'll see in our history, most likely. >> reporter: this storm has stranded drivers on i-40 in tennessee, shut down the federal government, and it's about to put a big thorn in the middle of valentine's day deliveries this week. >> it will do that. thank you. a real mess in north carolina. highways there turning into parking lots. and angelica alvarez of our station wtvd is on the road in raleigh. good morning, how is it going there? >> reporter: good morning, robin. yeah, north carolinians not learning -- listening to the timing of the start of the storm. a lot of drivers found themselves caught in the storm. we're along glenwood avenue in raleigh. this is being dubbed a parking lot. several cars stranded on the side of the road. drivers choosing to abandon their cars and seek shelter. there are many shelters that opened overnight. we're seeing several reports of accidents. a handful of fatalities being reported. thousands of power outages here. cleanup is under way. our department of transportation plowing the snow, towing cars. it's not over for us just yet. we're in for another round of sleet and snow coming at us in just a few hours. so while we get ready for that, i'll send it back to you guys. george? >> thank you. now to philadelphia. snow picking up there right now. this storm after so many in that region lost power last week. linzie janis is live with the latest. good morning, linzie. >> reporter: good morning, george. this is a suburb to the northwest of philadelphia, and some people just had their power turned back on yesterday, nine days after a massive ice storm hit. they are getting dumped on again. but the power company says they have ready. 5,000 workers from around the country here standing by. those workers were called in last week when 850,000 people were left without power. the second-worst storm after superstorm sandy in terms of outages. the power company saying it was caught offguard by the severity of the last storm. this time, they say they're ready. >> okay, thanks so much. head north now to abc's gio benitez. he's in westfield, new jersey. snow is piling up on the snow from the last storm. good morning, gio. >> reporter: good morning to you, robin. take a look. this is the fluffy snow falling right now. about 10 inches expected. you said it. take a look. this is the worst part of the storm right here. you have this ice that built up here during the last storm. the heavy ice. the snow is falling on top of it, creating more problems. ginger said it. this storm, later this afternoon, this snowfall is going to be turning into rain and sleet. so it will be slushy here. robin? george? >> we can see that. thank you. there's never a good time for a storm like this. this could cause more travel trouble than most coming before the long president's day weekend. our david kerley has more. he's at reagan national airport. good morning, david. zb . >> reporter: it's a mess. and the snow is slowing and they are struggling ting to keep it . they are using skip loaders, but the jets are going nowhere. there is nobody in the terminal. this place is open, but there's nobody here. airports are struggling to stay open. at richmond international, they were struggling to keep the runways over too. lots of cancellations. yesterday, 3400 flights canceled. today, another 1,000. 4400 flights canceled already. it's a mess, even if you can get to the airport. i had to detour to get here. it's a big mess. >> we didn't know if you would make it. i'm glad you do. do you have advice for travelers? >> reporter: it's the advice you get all the time, check with your airline. if they get out later today, they're going to move aircraft and get people out. if your flight is kancancelled, call your airline and figure out if you can get out tomorrow. thank you. ginger has more. snowfall rates are intense. we're talking inches per hour in some places. they just put this table out not long before we came out. easily an inch. it's a light, fluffy, eventually the heavy, chunky snow that can be dangerous. this is the next question, when does it end? let me show you this graphic and give you an idea what's going to happen. let me time it out. the rain/snow/sleet line. it moves through. late morning, early afternoon. through boston. new england. i'm telling you, by tonight into early tomorrow morning, we'll say good-bye to this nor'easter. and good riddance, i'm sure. >> uncle. uncle. they're screaming uncle. >> in the ten minutes we've been on the air, it's picked up outside. >> this is really the inch per hour we're talking about. >> let's get to josh with the other top stories. >> i didn't know there was going to be math on the show today. breaking news from kentucky. a gas line explosion there two hours south of louisville. this picture taken some 20 miles away from the blast site. the blast damaging or destroying at least three homes. it left a 60-foot crater in the ground. two people are hospitalized. homes within a few miles of the blast have been evacuated as a precaution. big news for millions of americans watching us right now on cable television. there's a megamerger in the works. it could affect your monthly bill. rebecca jarvis has the details. good morning. >> reporter: hi, josh, good morning. a lot of people impacted. 30 million cable tv subscribers. this morning, comcast announcing they're buying time warner in a $45 billion deal. comcast and time warner are the top two cable companies in the country. both are fighting to retain subscribers amid fierce competition from companies like netflix. they are now producing their own shows. consumer advocates are criticizing the deal. one group calling it a disaster for consumers, claiming it will drive up cable bills. it is not a done deal. the merger is going to require government approval. stay tuned. >> i like what you did there, rebecca. thank you. a landslide that shut down part of an oregon highway. the rockslide near the city of hood river was so powerful it pushed the center barrier across the interstate. one car crashed into the boulder. you can see it there. meantime, two skiers with broken legs trapped on a mountain in eastern oregon have now been rescued. they were injured in an avalanche that killed two of their companions. tense moments for people on this roller coaster at busch gardens in tampa. as you can see, stranded some 50 feet in the air when the coaster suddenly stopped working. it took firefighters nearly two hours to access the site, rescue everyone, oh, by the way, in the rain. no, thank you. and police in a denver suburb have released video of the moment a 10-year-old crashed her mother's suv through the wall of an office building. people in chairs scrambling to get out of the way. the fascinating thing here, that office building happens to be the department of motor vehicles, where the girl's mom was getting paperwork done. i can tell you, everyone was okay. and that's -- i mean, that's -- that's some irony. >> yeah. right there. that's -- there's nowhere to go from there. >> there's nowhere to go. >> thank you. now to more on the breaking news of the clean sweep of the men's ski slopestyle. amy robach tracking all the latest at our "gma" olympic headquarters in sochi. good morning for team usa, amy. >> yes, isn't it fun to deliver great news? a thrilling morning, robin, here in sochi. ski slopestyle is new to the olympics. this morning, the u.s. team has three new shining stars. this morning, a clean sweep for team usa. joss christensen, gus kenworthy, and nick goepper taking gold, silver, and bronze. it's in the new event, slopestyle skiing. the third time in history that the u.s. has swept a medal podium. a victory dance team usa style. kaitlyn farrington celebrating her gold medal halfpipe run with a shimmy. but those moves, nothing compared to this, the backside 900. a monster move that requires borders to rotate backwards two and a half complete times. one of the most technically difficult of the night. for farrington, considered a dark horse, that dream a pipe dream no more. >> after running the first run in finals, i was like, maybe i can do this. maybe i can be on the podium. to land on top, unbelievable. >> reporter: not far behind, kelly clark from team usa. grabbing a bronze, but not without a fight. clark bouncing off the deck and slamming hard on to the flat, but her second run, simply masterful. >> i looked at this whole experience as the icing on the cake for an amazing snowboard career. >> reporter: there was also heartbreak. ariel gold dropping out after hurting her shoulder in a nasty spill. >> there will be no medal. >> reporter: speed skater shani davis, the fastest lightning favorite to win the 1000 meter, finishing eighth. on the women's downhill, an uphill battle. france's marie marchand-arvier with a violent crash into the netting. julia mancuso failed to medal for the u.s. and in pairs free skate, team russia once again electrified the home crowd. overcome with emotion. stealing gold, silver, and the show. a thrilling start for the u.s. men's hockey team. they took on slovakia this morning and won in a blowout. we all know the big game comes for the americans on saturday when the men face the powerhouse russians. just over my shoulder is the bolshoy ice dome, where the games take place. something cool happens while games are taking place. you can see the score on the building. you can follow, no matter where you are in olympic park. especially if you are towering over it like we are. there are two exciting events today. the mixed team luge, and the women's skeleton. for the first time ever, a male and female luge team including bronze medalist erin hamlin speeding down the track. and the u.s. women are competing in the skeleton. that is a hair-raising event where you motor down the track head first. americans know wnoelle pikus-pa katie uhlaender are in first and fourth. check out katie's helmet. that is one fierce eagle. i did a little research. they travel 6,000 feet down the frozen raceway with their chin two inches above the ice. that is some bravery. >> we're not going to see that in the "gma" games. leave that for the olympics. >> unless sara wants it. >> josh is over at the sochi scoreboard. what do we have? >> how warm is it? >> thank you, josh. american cross-country skier holly brooks tweeted out this picture. they're training in t-shirts. >> we have the "gma" games doing cross-country. czar -- sara will have a t-shirt on in times square as well. >> outside. emotional day. the loud music trial. we have been covering it for you. dan abrams is going to be discussing it with us. >> it's getting to the nitty-gritty there. we know karina smirnoff. dancing with the stars, a wonderful friend of ours. and now a different journey outside of the ballroom. why she's freezing her eggs right now. and one versus the other. one used to mentor the other. bode versus ted in sochi. and to the latest on the storm walloping the east coast. back to gio benitez in westfield, new jersey. snow is coming down so fast there too. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you again, robin. this snow here, this is ice. this is ice that formed from the last storm. and so all across these roads, you're finding the old ice that has new snow on top of it. it will turn into more ice. this area alone has seen some 44 inches of snow so far this season. another 10 expected later today. the good news is that a lot of this snow is just really fluffy. it will be easy to plow. it is going to be turning into black ice later today when this turns into rain and sleet, george. >> rough one. thank you. to the latest on the loud music murder case in florida. michael dunn charged with killing an unarmed teenager. his fate in the hands of a jury. ryan owens with more from jacksonville. good morning, ryan. >> reporter: good morning to you, george. the jury deliberated about three hours last night. they'll get right back to it this morning. they have asked the judge already to see something. the surveillance video from the night this happened. >> this defendant took it upon himself to silence jordan davis forever. >> reporter: in a case where loud music allegedly led to murder -- >> he shot at the back of unarmed teenagers. >> reporter: -- prosecutors raised their voices in closing arguments on wednesday, as they implored the jury not to buy michael dunn's claim of self-defense. >> even people with the right of self-defense do not have the right to take the life of a child. >> reporter: prosecutors say the 47-year-old software developer fired ten shots at an suv full of teens, killing 17-year-old jordan davis when he wouldn't turn down the volume. davis' father wiped away the tears. >> jordan davis didn't have a weapon. he had a big mouth. and that defendant wasn't going to stand for it. >> reporter: dunn has a very different story of what happened at this jacksonville, florida, gas station in november of 2012. [ gunfire ] >> oh, my god, somebody's shooting. >> reporter: he pleaded not guilty and took the stand. >> i thought i was going to be killed. >> reporter: telling jurors he had to shoot or be shot. he claims davis had a shotgun. even though police never found a weapon. >> here is my glove box. i'm looking out the window. and they said you're not going to kill me you son of a [ bleep ]. and i shot. >> reporter: which version will the jury believe? this morning, it's up to five men, seven women. six white, four hispanic, and two african-american who will decide this case. just how complicated is this case? listen to this, it took the judge an hour, a full hour, just to read the jury its introduction. so, george, these people have a lot of work today and a lot of options to choose from. >> okay, ryan, thank you. let's get more on this from dan abrams. first clue from the jury after three hours, they wanted to see the surveillance video. >> right. this is video from inside the station where you can hear the shots. the prosecution introduced this evidence. i think that is not something the defense is going to be particularly excited about. because, when you listen to the shots being fired on that surveillance tape, you hear a pause. you hear the bang, bang, bang. and then you hear another volley. and that's part of the problem here for the defense in claiming self-defense, is it's not as if he just sort of shoots to keep the person away. sounds like a volley of shots followed by another. it makes it a problem for self-defense. >> you say the defense has not put up much of a defense. should the jury get through this quickly? >> i think they have put up a real defense by having him testify. i think the evidence, though. the inconsistencies, with regard to his account. the police statement versus what he's saying on the stand. the issue of whether there was a gun, and the fact that he didn't say it to his fiance. all sorts of problems with his testimony. that doesn't mean it's going to be easy. there are a lot of charges to consider. there are lesser charges to consider. and there could be a conflict on the jury as to what to convict him on. >> thank you. now to a shocking mystery rocking virginia tech. a 21-year-old senior is dead. a fellow female student, charged with killing her. the motive unknown. and mara schiavocampo has the story. >> reporter: it's a mystery. it's shaken a college campus. a well-liked student at virginia tech murdered. another student and two others facing charges. police say 21-year-old senior and biology major, samanat samanata shreshta, known as sam, was killed over the weekend. >> something is wrong. that was my immediate reaction. me and my husband. i said, this is not right. >> reporter: now, fellow senior, 22-year-old jessica ewing is behind bars, accused of murdering shrestha. investigates haven't determined a motive. she was arrested after her car was found abandoned on the side of the road on monday. in court documents obtained by a newspaper, police say shrestha's body was in the backseat wrapped in a sleeping bag. they say ewing called on keifer brown, a vt grauduate, and michael heller to help her cover up the crime. >> when a crime happens and they didn't know it was going to happen, they panic. people reach out to friends and associates to help them. >> reporter: none of the students has entered a plea. they did not return requests for comment. for "good morning america," mara schiavocampo, abc news, new york. >> so sad. another check of the weather. are we putting you to work, ginger? a couple times? >> a few. >> reporter: not wanting to miss out on motherhood, the currently single 35-year-old decided to freeze her eggs to use later when the timing is right and documented each pain-staking moment on video. you clearly are not a fan of needles. >> no, i'm afraid. i actually passed out. the very first one, it took me an hour to stick the needle inside. ooh. not a fan of needles. >> reporter: why did you decide to freeze your eggs? >> my profession is dancing. i've concentrated on my career for a long time. i love what i do. but i know i want to be a mother. >> reporter: after 12 days of estrogen injections, she was ready for the egg retrieval. >> we're on the way to finally do the procedure. >> reporter: how did her procedure go? >> karina's procedure went very well. we stimulated her ovaries and got a total of 21 eggs. >> reporter: the doctor says it's possible that the frozen eggs could last indefinitely. but the chance to harvest them, finite. >> we like to do this ideally before a woman is 35. >> reporter: you think in the end, it's all worth it? >> 100%. it's not easy. it's scary. it's something that, like, you know you're doing it for yourself. you feel empowered by the fact that you were able to give yourself an opportunity to not have to worry about your biological clock. >> reporter: and you're one step closer to the family you have always wanted. >> i am. i'm one step closer. >> reporter: for "good morning america," abbie boudreau, abc news, los angeles. >> let's bring in dr. jen ashton, our senior medical contributor. karina says 100% she would do it again. is freezing -- is it really viable? >> the asrm, the big society for infertility issues in the country said in 2012 egg freezing is no longer experimental. we have enough data. it can be now elective. it's a very important technology for certain types of women. it's not the same as not doing this type of procedure. again, it's not just going to be a convenience issue. this is for specific scenarios, certain types of women. >> are there risks involved? >> yeah, of course. i mean, first of all, it's expensive. medically, low risks of infection, bleeding. you can overstimulate the ovaries. and again, we, in medicine, like long-term data. 20 years. more than one generation. we don't know yet both for the babies conceived with this procedure, and for the moms 20, 30 years down the road how things will turn out. >> a lot of people now with hope. who should perhaps not consider this? >> this appears to be safe and effective. it has about 30% to 60% efficacy rates in all comers. obviously, the age of the woman giving her eggs is the most important thing. what this is really exciting for, women who have medical issues, who may be undergoing treatments for cancers. we're picking up a lot more cancers in reproductive-age women. and some of those therapies can affect the ovarian reserves. if the woman is getting surgery or radiation to her pelvis, it's important. certain genetic situations. not just for convenience. like, hey, i want to have a baby when i'm 60 so i'm going the freeze my eggs when i'm 20. >> that's different. >> it's also really expensive. you have to pay fees to keep the eggs. >> it's incredibly expensive. the price varies. it could be $10,000 for one cycle or tens of thousands of dollars. >> thank you, jen. appreciate that. i know you want to talk to her about hockey, but -- >> she solved it. she solved it for the u.s. women. >> usa. >> thinking of your daughter, chloe. figure skating. one of the most popular events at the winter olympics. the men are set to battle it out on the ice. abc's amy robach, you know where she is. she's back there in sochi with the latest. good morning again, amy. >> that's right. good morning, guys. figure skating one of the most popular events. and this year, a young american is hoping to steal the spotlight from the hometown favorite. it's the men's turn to take center stage. all eyes will be on russian legend yevgeny plyushchenko. the 31-year-old has already struck gold in sochi, leading his comrades to team glory. but a young american is skating into sochi, 19-year-old jason brown, the youngest u.s. men's olympic singles skater since 1976, and he rocked the river dance during the team competition. ♪ that show-stopping performance has been viewed on youtube almost 4 million times. his signature ponytail has its own twitter account with over 1,000 followers. meanwhile, u.s. champion jeremy abbott saw his olympic dreams turn into a nightmare in the team phase. tonight, he's looking to rebound and has high hopes that he can still soar. u.s. figure skaters have already captured that bronze in the team competition. we're going to find out if they can add some hardware to that collection. and take a look at the support we have just seen for jason brown. a ten-foot ice sculpture in his hometown of highland park, illinois. it's surrounded by cheering fans. and we just want to say we're really glad that that's in illinois, where it's 19 degrees. that thing wouldn't last an afternoon here in sochi, where it's 61. did we mention that?
