and a good wednesday morning to you all. we begin with breaking news from houston this morning about the health of former president george h.w. bush. >> we've learned that mr. bush has been hospitalized since saturday after experiencing shortness of braetd. a spokeswoman says he's doing well and responding to treatment and expected to be out of the hospital in a few days. >> the former president was last seen in public earlier this month at a texans game. he spent some time on the field there with his son jeb. now, he was already not planning to attend the trump inauguration on friday due to health issues. so, we're going to be staying on top of this story throughout the morning for you. >> we wish him well, indeed. and we're going to turn now to the nation's next president, donald trump, just two days away from taking office. >> preinaugural festivities kicked off with a black-tie dinner in washington as trump addressed hundreds of diplomats and donors, and check out this tweet from vice president-elect mike pence sneaking in a little backstage dance with wife karen. we have abc's lana zak with the latest on the inauguration and the political battles intensifying for the incoming administration. >> we have great respect for your countries. >> reporter: at a d.c. dinner with foreign diplomats, mr. trump joked about the confirmation hearings and his pick for secretary of state, rex tillerson. >> you know, he's led this charmed life. again, he goes into the country, takes the oil, goes into another country. it's tough dealing with these politicians, right. he's going to be so incredible. >> reporter: today the senate takes up another cabinet nominee, congressman tom price for health and human services amid growing concern about the potential repeal of obamacare. >> representative price's approach is moving us in exactly the wrong direction. >> reporter: the congressional budget office estimates 18 million people could lose their insurance. >> i am here because i have concerns about the repealing of the affordable care act. >> reporter: meanwhile, in an interview with fox news, mr. trump discussed his tweeting habits, something he previously said he loved. >> i don't like tweeting. i have other things i could be doing, but i get very dishonest media. >> reporter: d.c. is making the final preparations for inauguration. mr. trump choosing to be sworn in on two bibles, the one his mother gave him as a child and the lincoln bible used by president barack obama. the numbers of democrats boycotting continuing now to rise. one in four democrats in the house saying they will not attend on friday. and there may be more problems for representative price. democrats are actually asking the s.e.c. to investigate a stock trade he made last march after he introduced legislation that directly benefited that company, though price says it was done by a broker without his knowledge. kendis, diane. >> all right, stakes are going to be higher as they talk about replacing obamacare, as well. lana zak live in washington for us. lana, thank you. speaking of obamacare, the republicans are struggling to reunite behind a single plan. two lawmakers, though, have drawn up an idea. >> so that joint plan from gop senators susan collins and bill cassidy would allow states to keep the health care law or choose from other options, but what those options will actually be is yet to be determined. and we have more confirmation hearings on tap for today. oklahoma attorney general scott pruitt is up for epa chief after years of challenging the agency. billionaire investor wilbur ross is under consideration for commerce secretary, and u.n. ambassador pick south carolina governor nikki haley will also be facing questions. she's expected to blast the u.n. for condemning israel. on friday stay with abc news for all the inauguration events for donald trump online and on air. we'll be here with you. the suspect in the murder of an orlando police officer has now been captured. markeith loyd was marched before cameras overnight. his face bloodied. he was found in an abandoned home after being on the run for nine days. police say they traced him through text messages sent from his phone. he's accused of killing master sergeant debra clayton and of killing his pregnant ex-girlfriend, as well. her mother spoke after the capture. >> my daughter, she deserved justice. she really does deserve justice, and i'm glad he's caught. i'm glad. now i can ask him why, why, why would you want to do this to our family and try to kill both of my babies? >> and the police chief said they actually used the late sergeant's handcuffs when arresting loyd. he is now being treated in a hospital for those injuries that he got while being taken into custody. and a police detective is now dead after being shot in suburban dallas. jerry walker was a veteran of the little elm police department and a father of four. he was responding to the report of an armed man outside a house when he was shot. the suspected gunman has barricaded himself in that home. well, instead of spending nearly 30 more years behind bars, army intelligence analyst chelsea manning will be released from prison in may. that's after president obama commuted her lengthy sentence for giving u.s. secrets to wikileaks. she was known as bradley manning when she was arrested in 2010 and then manning has been convicted in a military court and has attempted suicide twice while being held in a men's prison. manning asked the president for clemency last november. >> we had no indication of if or when we would be hearing from the white house regarding chelsea manning's commutation application. we learned this afternoon along with everyone else, and it was a very -- it was a very thrilling and hopeful moment for us. >> senator john mccain claims that commuting manning's sentence will undermine military discipline and encourage further acts of espionage, and house speaker paul ryan calls president obama's move outrageous. and the secret service has reached a $24 million settlement in a discrimination case. the 2001 or in 2000 rather 100 black members of the agency took that case to court. they claim they were repeatedly passed over for promotions in favor of less qualified white co-workers. the secret service is not admitting to any wrongdoing. former homeland security secretary janet napolitano is in the hospital this morning experiencing complications during cancer treatment. the 59-year-old served as head of the homeland department during president obama's first term. she's now the president of the university of california. napolitano, we're told, is expected to be released from the hospital within the next day or so. and we're tracking some more rain and storms along the already saturated west coast. the first of a series of storms is slamming parts of washington, oregon and california. before it's all over, portland could see some icy conditions. and heavy rain in southern california tonight could lead to some minor flooding, as well. up to two more feet of mountain snow is also possible. well, still ahead, help wanted. the major retailer adding 10,000 jobs. plus, a 31-year mystery solved. two sisters missing since the '80s have been found alive. hear where investigators found them and who's now under arrest in connection with their disappearance. and caught on camera, a gas line explosion lighting up the nighttime sky. we'll tell you where and what the results were. and i take my job seriously. while i'm busy watching the game, i need your help keeping an eye on the stands. if you see something that doesn't look quite right, tell a law enforcement official. we all play an important role in protecting our communities, and you can help. if you see something suspicious, say something to local authorities.
