Surveillance video were showing you now, capturing the train zooming down the tracks in philadelphia. Investigators say it was going more than 100 miles an hour, that is double the speed limit when it hit a sharp curve. At least seven people are confirmed dead. And five have been identified. Most of them were heading home to their families. This is the engineer. Who was at the helm. Now saying he has no memory of the crash. Lana zak starts our coverage. Shes live in philadelphia for us. Good morning to you, lana. Reporter good morning, t. J. Good morning, marci. We now know that excessive speed was likely behind the accident here. We know that there was technology that amtrak had that could have prevented excessive speed. But at this section of track, it wasnt installed. The painstaking process of clearing the tracks in philadelphia is under way. Training lifting and carrying the toppled amtrak train cars. This morning, just two remain. The most heavily damaged. As crews work, were learning more about what happened and the people involved, including the engineer, identified as 32yearold Brandon Bostian of queens, new york. He remembers going through that area generally. Has absolutely no recollection of the incident or anything unusual. Reporter his lawyer told abc news bostian suffered injuries. 14 staples in his head and stitches in his leg. He said bostian spoke to police while he was in the hospital and submitted a blood sample. He was pretty beat up. What he looked was xasted. Exhausted. Reporter the ntsb recovered the event recorder. Preliminary information shows the train was going 106 miles an hour seconds before derailing. The speed limit on the curve is just 50 miles an hour. Bostian put on the brakes. It was too late. In the next three seconds, three or four seconds, the speed of the train had only decreased to 102. Reporter at least seven people are confirmed dead. Some families are still searching for their loved ones. His life may have been snuffed out. And my grandchildren are brokenhearted. And im cried out. Reporter and there are still many people that are missing or in Critical Condition right now. So that death toll may, in fact, rise beyond the seven people. Five have been publicly identified. T. J. And marci, as we were coming in here this morning, we could see that the search area has expanded. We now know that theyre using teams of dogs to see if anybody was thrown from the train. Theres so many questions. A lot of information coming in. What else are we learning about the engineer . Reporter well, now were starting to learn much more about him. We know that he came to work for amtrak in 2006. Friends describe him as a funny guy who had a real love of trains. This is the busiest rail line in the country. How is Service Going to be affected . Reporter well, yes, it is absolutely the busiest rail line in the country. For more than a day now, travelers have had all their plans snarled by this. We know that theyre going to have some limited service in the northeast corridor today. Theyre hoping to have that back up and running. But with the ongoing investigation, it will be a lengthy process. Marci . T. J. . Thank you so much. More on those who lost their lives during what was supposed to be a routine train ride. Husbands, dads, wives, a mom. A bright Young College student who dreamed of becoming a navy s. E. A. L. We get more now from abcs david wright. Reporter their stories are heartwrenching. Among them, justin zemser. Two months past his 20th birthday. His moms pride and joy. He was his High School Valedictorian and was just finishing up his second year as midshipman at the United States naval academy. Reporter he played football for navy, wide receiver. And was headed home to Rockaway Beach at the end of the school year. His journey home ended here. 39yearold Rachel Jacobs texted her husband at 8 45 saying she had just caught the train. It was the last message hell ever get from her. She was ceo of a philadelphia tech startup. Commuting from her home in new york. 49yearold jim gaines worked for the Associated Press doing digital video. Voted a. P. s geek of the month. Survived by his wife and two teenage children. Wells fargo bank confirmed one of its Senior Vice President s, abid gilani, is also among the dead. He was a kind family man. We have suffered a tremendous loss today. Hell be sorely missed. And, he was really a wonderful person. Well, the latest victim to be identified is that man, a 42yearold educator, dr. Derrick griffith. He was a dean at Medgar Evers College in brooklyn. He was traveling from d. C. When the train derailed. He recently defended his dissertation in urban education and was scheduled to graduate in two weeks. Were hearing more and more incredible stories of survival. Josh gotbaum says he used a pile of seats to climb out. And others were able to use his makeshift ladder so they could also escape. He says he was caught next to an unresponsive woman, though. Not everybody could we get to. There was a woman seated i think in the row behind me. But i dont know exactly for sure. But she was pinned under a bunch of seats. And, we basically couldnt get her out. There was no reaction. Heard no voice et cetera. And since we thought there was a fire coming in, we got out. I dont i think she was crushed. Gotbaum says he injured his head and ribs in the crash. A few miles from the crash site, the Philadelphia Phillies paid tribute observing a moment of silence for those who lost their lives on tuesday night in that crash. And just hours after the tragedy unfolded in philadelphia, Something Else happened in washington, d. C. This was in congress. The republicancontrolled house voted to approve deep spending cuts to amtraks budget. And effort by democrats to boost the funding went nowhere. The cuts were preliminary.
