good morning. let's start with that powerball jackpot. a dose of disappointment for most of us but completely life-changing for a select few. >> yeah and by few she means this many. three. this is what we know. there have been three winning tickets sold one was purchased at the convenience store of this valerotation in the north texas city of princeton 50 miles northwest of dallas the others bought in north carolina and puerto rico. >> the lucky numbers, 11 13 25 39 54 and the powerball, 19. 33 people matched all five but did not have the powerball. >> the identities of all those winners, still a mystery this morning. so many people lining up buying tickets yesterday, the jackpot was more than $564 million by the time of last night's drawing. now, because of the winning tickets saturday's jackpot goes back to just 40 million bucks so what's the point of even playing, right? we are on the search for those new millionaires. the very latest coming up on "good morning america." now, we turn to a shocking story that we heard about here overnight, really just several hours ago, a tragic loss for those of us in this industry especially the sudden death of bob simon. >> killed last night in a car crash in new york. overnight fans and colleagues posting tributes on social media. >> he made a career out of reporting from some of the most dangerous places on earth. journalism was a passion for bob simon taking him to some of the most dangerous places on earth. >> israel will not be able to retaliate by striking at palestinian positions in lebanon. >> i don't -- >> reporter: from vietnam to selma. it spanned five decades winning dozens of awards including 27 emmys. in 1991 at the outset of the gulf war the iraqi army captured simon an experience he wrote in in "forty days." the journalist returning to baghdad just two years later to report on the conflict. after working as a foreign correspondent for cbs news simon landed at the network's big show "60 minutes." overnight the show's executive producer saying it is such a tragedy made worse because we lost him in a car accident. a man who has escaped more difficult situations than almost any journalist in moderning" he was in a crash wednesday evening, the nypd says the car he was riding in clipped a mercedes then spun out of control. simon was pro-downsed dead at the hospital. no arrests have been made in the accident still under investigation now. so many fellow journalists paying tribute to his talent online. overnight his colleague at "60 minutes," anderson cooper tweeting "bob simon was the best writer in my opinion working in broadcast news. i have admired him from the time i was a kid watching him." that's one of many tributes. he leaves behind his wife and also a daughter who was also a producer at "60 minutes." he was 73 years old. the president's request for military action to battle isis. we'll learn more about it as congress holds hearings. >> the fbi is warning of another terror threat right here at home. abc's bazi kanani joins us now from washington with more on this, good morning, bazi. >> reporter: good morning, t.j. good morning, sara. fbi officials say isis is using facebook youtube, twitter to spread its message getting thousands from around the world to join the fight including an unknown number of americans who can return home at any time. as coalition air strikes pound isis targets in syria and iraq a stark warning about how this war could come home. top fbi officials concerned about how effectively isis is using the internet and social media to recruit and saying they simply can't keep track of every one of those recruits who have left europe and the u.s. to fight with isis and might return to strike here. >> i don't know every person there and i don't know everyone coming back so it's not even close to being under control. >> reporter: the urgency of the fight against the extremist group stressed by president obama wednesday as he asked congress to formally authorize military force that could involve putting special ops troops on the ground. >> now, make no mistake, this is a difficult mission and it will remain difficult for some time. but our coalition is on the offensive. izele is on the defensive and isil is going to lose. >> reporter: his request to authorizesize three years of military operations with no geographic limit on the campaign but it would ban enduring combat operations. on capitol hill bipartisan skepticism lawmakers concerned the war powers request is either too broad or doesn't go far denied wrongdoing. word was he had decided to resign but released a statement yesterday saying he has no intention of leaving office. the former captain of the wrecked "costa concordia" cruise ship is going to prison. 32 people died in the ship wreck three years ago. francesco schettino was convicted of manslaughter and abandoning the ship when many passengers and crew were still aboard. he's free pending appeal of his 16-year sentence. schettino claims he is a scapegoat for the accident. a former korean was sentenced in the nut rage case. the jet was pulling away when she was served macadamia nuts in a combag instead of a dish. that's when she had a full-blown tantrum insisting the plane return to the gate. this morning a korean court found her guilty of violating aviation law. they're still digging out in boston. >> and will be for awhile. the national guard has been helping clear the snow in a lot of towns around there. crews from all over the northeast are on their way and they rather close than pay higher holiday to union dockworkers who they accuse of staging a work slowdown. those union workers have been without a contract for nine months now. now a top retail trade group asking president obama to step in. united airlines says its incredibly cheap transatlantic tickets were too good to be true. its danish website was selling the tickets for as little as $51. they were only good for flights from britain to the u.s. but united blames a software provider for bungling the currency conversion from british pounds to danish krone. united will not be honoring those tickets. this morning, the fbi is launching an investigation into how fraudsters filed fake tax returns in order to steal refunds. that includes those filed through turbotax, which temporarily suspended state filings last week after discovering this problem. tax return scams are reportedly happening in 19 states. alabama alone, they've seen 16,000 suspicious filings. being in billboard's top ten is nothing new for paul mccartney. thanks to a push from the grammys, his recording with rihanna and kanye west of "four five seconds" is there this week. sir paul has had 32 number one the truck carrying the 43-foot yacht got stuck in a six-foot snowbank in downtown boston. the "maggie mae," worth over a million dollars, was on its way to the new england boat show. workers dug out the 18-wheeler carrying the boat but not before traffic was sunk. >> i love that entire read of yours. well done. well done. now, driving is going to be a challenge in new england again today with slippery road conditions all the way from maine down to the mid-atlantic states, also some slipping and sliding around the great lakes and upper midwest. roads are wet in the rio grande valley, as well. if you're flying, airport delays are likely in boston and new york. well, it is a crime that stunned a university town, the killing of three college students. >> thousands attended a candlelight vigil at the university of north carolina at chapel hill last night in their memory. the fbi has joined the investigation into whether the three young people were victims of a hate crime. abc's tom llamas is in north carolina with more. >> i heard about eight shots go off in an apartment. about three girls or -- more than one girl screaming. >> reporter: this chilling 911 call describes the moments 46-year-old craig stephen hicks allegedly shot and killed three muslim college students, deah and yusor barakat, newlywed and yusor's sister razan abu-salha. the family telling me they were shot execution style. >> she literally told me, daddy, i feel he hate us for how we look and how we dress. >> reporter: hicks appearing in court, charged with three counts of first degree murder. police say he turned himself in hours after killing his chapel hill neighbors. hicks' wife telling us he snapped over a parking situation at their apartment complex. >> this incident had nothing to do with religion or victims' faith. >> reporter: but hicks openly posted on facebook his disdain for organized religion. investigators say while this shooting was an isolated incident, they are investigating it as a possible hate crime. deah and yusor had just married in december. both looking to become dentists. >> i'm a dental student at unc. >> reporter: working to provide dental care to the less fortunate here and in the middle east. >> i'm angry because we have done nothing but be model american citizens. >> reporter: there was a vigil at unc chapel hill where deah was a student. his wife set to join him in the fall. many students here asking the same question, why? the accused killer, craig stephen hicks, has yet to enter a plea. tom llamas, abc news, chapel hill, north carolina. it was an emotionally wrenching first day of testimony in the so-called american sniper trial in texas. chris kyle's widow taya choked back tears telling jurors that her husband seemed unusually tense in their final phone conversation as he arrived at a shooting range with accused killer, former marine eddie routh. the jury also heard that kyle described routh as, quote, straight up nuts in a text he sent to his best friend just moments before they were both gunned down. okay, you got to see this one, folks. a carjacking suspect is in custody this morning after a chase in dallas, a wild chase. he's in that white car behind the wheel there on the run until he comes to a red light. he slams into the back of a couple other vehicles. the people in that vehicle, that van that he hit, well, they didn't appreciate being hit. they don't know what's going on and they confront the suspect, scream at him and then the lady who was driving the minivan and her boyfriend get ahold of the suspect, and they stop him from fleeing until police arrive to make the arrest. this worked out, but i don't think police recommend that you do this. >> don't try that at home. >> no. there's word from seattle this morning that amanda knox is engaged. her fiance is a musician who she's known since middle school. but no wedding date has been set. you may recall knox was convicted of murdering her roommate during her junior year abroad in italy. that conviction was reversed on appeal then knox was reconvicted. next month italy's highest court is set to decide whether knox should be tried for a third time. we turn now to a story that will make you sick in the stomach about the actions of some adults which has now resulted in the loss of the little league national championship won last summer by the team from chicago south side. the kids from jackie robinson west, you'll remember them, they won that title in storybook fashion, but an investigation found that the team officials, the adults, got ineligible players on to that team by changing the boundaries that determine where they must live. the team's title has now been stripped, vacated through no fault of the little kids. >> we know that we are champions. our parents know we are champions, and the team's parents know we're champions, and chicago knows we're champions. >> several officials from the jackie robinson west little league are being punished. the national title will be awarded to the team from las vegas that lost to the jackie robinson west kids. tough lesson learned. >> very tough. up next in "the pulse," could it be true?
