Eric cantor, the secondmost powerful house republican, defeated by a virtually unknown tea party challenger. I know theres a lot of long faces here tonight. And its disappointing, sure. Reporter the man who took down cantor, College Economics professor dave brat, a political novice, who was outspent 501. Cantor spending 5 million. Brat, a mere 100,000. Dollars do not vote. You do. This campaign was about just basic American Values and virtues. Reporter cantor was seen by many as the next speaker of the house, biding his time until john boehner leaves his post. His loss will have seismic political consequences in washington. The big issue in virginias conservative seventh district was immigration. He was viewed as being too close to president obama on Immigration Reform. Potentially supporting something akin to amnesty. Reporter cantors loss means Immigration Reform is almost certainly dead. After watching this epic upset, Republican Leaders in congress are not likely to touch the issue anytime soon. Cantors defeat is also likely to rally Tea Party Activists in other races. Many thought the gop establishment had gained the upper hand on the tea party, when Republican Senate leader Mitch Mcconnell fought off a tough primary challenge. A teenage Student Armed with a rifle, opened fire, killing one classmate and wounding a teacher before turning the gun on himself. Abcs mary bruce has the latest. Reporter students at this Oregon Middle School were about to start their day when a lone gunman opened fire. Priority call. Reynolds high school. Got a report of shots fired in the locker room. At least one person down. Medical is responding. I was really scared. I was, like, this is happening. This is real. Reporter armed with a rifle, the gunman started shooting in a locker room. And allegedly chased a beloved physed teacher down the hall. He was carrying a gun, running after one of our p. E. Teacher, mr. Ripsler, who ended up getting shot. Reporter that teacher survived. The second shots, it sounded, they were really loud and really close. Reporter terrified students huddled in the gym as the shots rang out. Officials from multiple agencies raced to the scene. The school, locked down. Everybody was, be quiet, theres a shooter. This is not a drill. Reporter hundreds of students were led out of harms way, evacuating with their hands held over their heads. Their backpacks left behind as they fled the scene. Anguished parents rushed to find their children. It was really scary. Reporter the shooter was found dead. His motive remains unknown. This was just a tragic event. It feels so personal. Reporter tragedy is an alltoo familiar scene. By one count, this is at least the 74th School Shooting since the massacre at sandy hook elementary. We now know the name of the student who was killed, 14yearold emilio hoffman. He died just one day shy of completing his freshman year. John and reena . Thanks, mary. It didnt take long for news of the shooting to reach the nations capital. President obama had some very strong words, saying his failure to push through stricter gun laws has been his biggest frustration of his presidency. Were the only developed country on earth where it happens. And it happens now once a week. And its a oneday story. Theres no place else like this. Mr. Obama went on to say that that change on gun policy can only come if the country demands it. And so, the country has to do soulsearching about this. Now, to the unfolding drama in iraq. Thousands of iraqis are on the move after a major city was taken over by militants. There are fears that an advancing Al Qaedalinked group could spark another war in the region. Around 500,000 people have fled iraqs secondlargest city, mosul, according to the united nations, as it fell into the hands of an al qaeda offshoot. All of the people have fled, this man said. They have left their homes. And the people are lying dead in the streets. These radical militants belong to i. S. I. S. , short for the Islamic State of iraq and the levant. In the fighting, they forced iraqs army and police to abandon their posts. Left behind were money, weapons and these american Armored Vehicles given to iraq. Now, in the hands of the militants. The army dissolved. They were terrified, this woman said. They fled, so we left, too. Mosul is the second major iraqi city to fall to i. S. I. S. This year.
