suspect, and they were all university of california santa barbara students including three people found stabbed inside the suspected shooter's apartment, and we've learned that the alleged gunman's parents tried to intervene in the moments before that shooting, but they were too late. abc's tahman bradley has the latest. >> tomorrow is the day of retribution. >> reporter: this chilling youtube video and a 141-page manifesto detailed the troubled life of elliot rodger and his alleged plan to kill. the digital trail paints a life filled with childhood bullying, loneliness and rejection. >> girls gave their affection and sex and love to other men but never to me. >> he was really, really upset about why is the world so unfair to him. >> reporter: police say rodger's rampage began when he killed three men inside his own apartment, all stabbed repeatedly.xñ he then, according to authorities, drove around the college town friday night shooting and running over people. he hit ten places in all including the alpha phi sorority house. >> shots fired. shots fired. >> reporter: the terrifying moments captured by this surveillance video from the iv deli mart.ñi sierra swartz says she was about ten feet from his car when he shot at her multiple times. >> he looked directly at me, and somehow even though i hadn't even ran yet, he didn't hit me. >> reporter: the terror ended with rodger dead. police suspect he shot himself in the head. the santa barbara community now gathering at vigils and memorials is asking hard questions about whether this could have been prevented. friday night, rodger's parents raced to find their son after ç they got an e-mail outlining a plot to kill, but it was too late. a month earlier the parents contacted police because they had grown worried about their son. the police visited rodger but say they found him polite and courteous. the handgun and bullets found in his car were legally purchased. tahman bradley, abc news, washington. >> all right, tahman, thank you. and stay with abc news for the very latest on the killing spree in isla vista. we have live team coverage coming up on "good morning america." breaking news overnight now, three people are missing in colorado after torrential rains apparently triggered a giant mudslide west of denver. it's reported to be 4 miles jod long, 2 miles wide and up to 250 feet deep, enough to swallow a 25-story building. sheriff's deputies say it was an entire ridge that had been sliding for most of the day. no structures have been reported damaged. we'll, of course, have a better idea of the extent of the damage after daylight. and crews in arizona are spending this memorial day trying to get that fire in the northern part of the state under control. right now the slide fire is only 25% contained. a spokesman says a lot more work needs to be done before more progress is made, and a lot depends on the weather. to alaska now where hundreds of people have been forced from their homes as a large fire keeps on growing. the fire on kenai peninsula south of anchorage is now about 218 square miles. the size of that blaze is not unusual for alaska, but the state does not usually see such large fires this early in the season. severe weather is on the move this memorial day across much of the south and midwest. flood watches and warnings are posted across texas as thunderstorms and downpours march eastward. accuweather's molly cochran has the latest memorial day forecast. >> if you have this memorial day holiday off, break out the shorts and t-shirts. feeling more like summertime across the northeast. temperatures well into the 80s from new york city to boston. don't get too comfortable, though, as we will see a cooler trend pushing its way into the new england states on tuesday then making its way into much of the northeast by wednesday. different story across the south central picking up some heavy rainfall on monday. want to keep a watchful eye to the sky as we can expect some thunderstorms in there, as well. now across much of the deep south also picking up on the heat along the gulf coast. central force of thunderstorm activity to pop up mainly in the afternoon hours across florida and north carolina. >> all right, molly, thank you. and a final weather note here, hurricane amanda, the first named storm and first hurricane of the eastern pacific season has now reached category 4 status with winds of up to 155 miles an hour. amanda has become the strongest eastern pacific hurricane on record. but it's not expected to make landfall. president obama marks this memorial day by laying a wreath at the tomb of the unknowns at arlington national cemetery. yesterday he delivered a special message in person to the troops serving in afghanistan at bagram air force base during an unannounced visit. >> and i keep on saying to every company back home, if you want somebody that knows how to get the job done, hire a vet. hire a vet. hire a vet. [ cheers and applause ] before leaving the country, president obama phoned afghan president hamid karzai. the president praised karzai for the progress being made and for the first successful round of presidential elections. and a major embarrassment for the white house. the top cia officer in afghanistan had his cover blown when his name was put on a list released to reporters. the memo contained the names of people who took part in a briefing with the president during his visit. the white house quickly revised that list without his name. overseas now where it appears ukraine's new president will be billionaire candymaker petro poroshenko. early returns in sunday's election found the tycoon ahead. final results are expected to be released later today. poroshenko has promised to unite the country and end the violent chaos that has gripped eastern ukraine. and that attack this weekend on belgium's jewish museum appears to have been deliberate and methodical. surveillance video shown here, it shows the suspect walking into the museum pulling an automatic rifle out of a bag and opening fire. he killed several people then walked out all in less than a minute. authorities are not sure if this attack was terrorism or anti-semitism. and now to a surprise from pope francis during his visit to the mideast. he invited the palestinian and israeli presidents to a prayer meeting at his vatican apartment next month, and both of them accepted. while visiting bethlehem, he called for greater efforts towards peace and referred to the west bank as the state of palestine. while there he visited christian historic sites. and a senator in australia says the new security measures for parliament are a joke, and he proved it. during a hearing he reached into a shopping bag, pulled out a pipe bomb or what he said could have been a pipe bomb. until last week virtually everyone entering the building was screened, and now almost no one is. and back here at home now on this memorial day, we honor the men and women who have given their lives in defense of our country. and, of course, doing so means plenty of parades. this one in chicago. members of every service branch marched along with the bands, and it's one of the largest parades in the country. this year's grand marshal was illinois congresswoman tammy duckworth, herself a wounded warrior. and there are scenes like this at military cemeteries across the nation. small american flags placed at every grave. more than 2,000 volunteers helped to set up 20,000 flags at the dallas/ft. worth national cemetery. all right, stay with us because still ahead, we have new details about a couple accusing high school teachers of recruiting their daughters to join a religious cult. and survival story. adramatic rescue after a climber plunges hundreds of feet off america's biggest mountain. plus, caught on camera, a wild scene unfolds after a rapper and professional boxer square off in a restaurant. welcome back. the makers of food and candy aimed at children are fighting the e-cigarette companies. the snack companies don't want their names and flavors on the flavored liquid nicotine used in e-cigs. those brand names include tootsie rolls and cinnamon toast crunch. the girl scouts called the use of their thin mint name "deceitful and shameless." the markets are closed after heading into the holiday weekend on a high note. for the first time this year all three major u.s. indices closed friday with gains for 2014. the s&p 500 finished above 1900 for the first time ever. it seems the bull market now five years old still has some life. and so does the "x-men" movie franchise. the team of mutants overpowered a single mutant monster this weekend. colorado, near denver after a sixth consecutive day of severe storms for that area. the poudre river in larimer county is approaching flood stage, and there is an elevated threat of flash flooding. all right, now for a look at your morning road conditions, that storm system in colorado is marching eastward causing wet driving conditions and flooding across a wide swath of the nation from the texas gulf coast up into the great lakes. roads in the northeast and much of the south will be slick along with the pacific northwest. and if you're flying, airport delays are possible in dallas, houston, minneapolis and chicago. a climber on oregon's mt. hood is lucky to be alive this morning. other climbers, including a doctor, were able to reach him just moments after he slipped on the ice and fell hundreds of feet. witnesses say that fall was terrifying to watch. >> he looked like a rag doll. just came tumbling head over heels right into the hole. >> the 59-year-old man has more than a dozen broken bones. a rescue helicopter flew him to a hospital, and it was probably in the nick of time. he fell into a volcanic vent hole, and the gases there could have killed him. all right, now to a bizarre story developing out of an affluent suburb in hartford, connecticut. three high school spanish teachers and a guidance counselor are all accused of indoctrinating three sisters into a religious cult. their parents have filed a federal lawsuit saying the cult promotes martyrdom and celebrates death, and their daughters have undergo severe personality changes. no criminal charges, though, have been filed. now to a midnight fishing trip in south florida that turned up an extraordinary catch. the fishermen reeled in a 500-pound sawfish, which is nearly extinct. fortunately because one of them recorded the moments they brought it ashore, this is not just another fish tale. erin guy from our west palm beach station has the story. >> it's like catching a fish like that is once in a lifetime. >> reporter: dustin richter and his buddies still can't get enough of their video. >> for two hours. >> reporter: but the late night fishing trip almost didn't happen. the plan was to spend the evening playing poker. instead, they hit the boynton beach inlet. >> after about an hour of putting our lines out, we hadn't gotten a hit so we were about to leave. >> reporter: then a bite. >> something started clicking and the reel started going off. it felt like it was like four or five feet. >> reporter: and after about 30 minutes a glimpse. but it wasn't four or five feet. >> and then kind of got light and we saw the fish. we realized it was a sawfish. we were amazed because it was 11 feet long, and the bill was 4 feet long and it was just a crazy find and pretty much every time we tried to get it closer, the fish was way too powerful for us to get on that reel. >> reporter: eventually they got it to shore and, of course, took pictures and reflected on just how rare this endangered species is to see up close. >> it's just one of those prehistoric looking animals and people see and if you see them -- you're lucky to see t m them. if you catch them, you're even luckier. >> reporter: erin guy, boynton beach, florida. now to some sports starting with frustration boiling over from the defending world series champs. the red sox got angry yesterday yelling at a tampa bay player who took third base unchallenged and the screaming escalated to finger-pointing then the benches cleared. lots of talking and a little pushing here but not much else. three players were ejected. the rays won the game. sending the sox to their tenth straight loss. now to tennis. the french open is under way and venus williams had no problem in her first round match. she's playing her 17th french open. yesterday, ironically, she b%y+ñ a 17-year-old from switzerland, her sister, defending champ serena williams, also won her first match.yló if both williams sisters win the second round, they will face each other in the third round. all right. tonight the miami heat can go up 3-1 in their nba playoff series against indiana. and the l.a. kings can go ahead of the 6-0. he threw 126 pitches, struck out 6, walked 3. his first career no-no. the 21st no-hitter in dodgers' history and their 11th since moving from brooklyn to los angeles. ryan hunter-reay wins the indianapolis 500. he edged out helio castroneves by just 0.06 seconds, the second closest finish in the race's history. hunter-reay celebrating the win with the traditional glass of milk. for more on
