Good tuesday morning. We begin this half hour with act two of that powerful storm system slamming the south. 25 million americans are still in the hot zone. Dozens of tornadoes are blamed for more than two dozen deaths across four states. Hundreds of injuries, homes leveled and entire communities nearly wiped out. Abcs gio benitez on the storm trail recorded this dramatic video overnight of lightning strikes near birmingham, alabama. And this twister near tupelo, mississippi, was measured a mile wide. Abcs Scott Goldberg is there this morning. Reporter stunned by the devastation and bracing for more, people in the path of deadly tornadoes in the south and lower midwest, feel the fury of this seasons first outbreak. It was like a roaring Freight Train for 20 or 30 seconds. And then, after that, it was calm. Reporter more than 20 people across 4 states have been killed. The twisters leveling homes and ripping communities. This is where i grew up. All these houses are my familys houses. And theyre gone. You never think its going to happen to you, until it does. And the devastation. And we ask that you just keep us in your prayers. Reporter the hardest hit, arkansas. This video captures the storms path, tearing through neighborhoods outside of little rock. This woman rescued her elderly parents from the rubble. In mayflower, arkansas, the storm tossed around semis like toys. And this twister touched down in tupelo, mississippi. Flattening buildings and knocking out power lines. And perhaps the scariest part for survivors, knowing this violence could just be this tornado seasons opening act. Its been a long night for us trying to get to tupelo. We had to fly into birmingham, alabama, driving northwest. Ran into a semi that had turned over on the road. We were backed up. It was basically a parking lot in the pouring rain for an hour. And now, trying to get around in tupelo overnight, a lot of the roads are closed. We see a lot of downed trees and such. We know when the sun comes up and this community tries to survey whats happened here, its going to be pretty ugly and pretty tough to look at. All right. Going to be a long couple of days for the community there. Scott goldberg, live from tupelo, mississippi. Thank you. All right. Well, things got tense for a Mississippi Television station in the severe weather. During a live broadcast, the chief meteorologist at wtva forced the crew to evacuate the studio and head to the basement. Basement, now. Go. Go. Now. What . Now. The station later tweeted out that everyone was safe. Wow. Thats dramatic stuff. The National Weather service is calling this storm a multiday event. And it says the tornado threat could go on for several more days. Accuweathers jim dickey joins us now with the very latest. Good morning, jimg. Good morning, john and diana. Conditions ripe for another round of dangerous tornadoes here today. The threat shifts slightly eastward. From eastern louisiana into Central Alabama and northwestern georgia. The threat for dangerous, longtrack tornadoes. And the threat shifts further east on wednesday. This is not the tornado threat. But certainly some gusty winds and large hail. And these storms bringing rounds of torrential rainfall. Flash flooding and river flooding a major concern, heading through midweek. John and diana, back to you. All right, jim. Thank you. Nearly 100 people were onboard this regional plane when the engine caught fire shortly after takeoff from perth. You can see the flames trailing from the British Aerospace jet. The pilot had to make an Emergency Landing at the airport. Touching down safely. No one was injured. The passengers say there were some tense moments as that fire got bigger. All just hitting on the righthand side of the plane. And the lefthand side was on fire. And it got worse and worse as it went on. Investigators are trying to determine what caused that fire. A fallout from the racist comments allegedly made by l. A. Clippers owner Donald Sterling, spreading this morning. Major sponsors cutting ties with the clippers. And more team owners, as well as players, calling for extreme sanctions against sterling, which could be announced today. Abcs Kristin Fisher has details. Reporter today could be the day that the nba takes action against clippers owner Donald Sterling. The nba commissioner is expected to hold a News Conference in new york, where it could announce that the league is suspending or fining sterling. The nba has no room in this league for anybody who is a bigot. As a matter of fact, nba staffs, no bigots allowed. Reporter sanctions are one thing. But does the nba have the power to force sterling to sell the team . Thats still unclear. Dallas mavericks owner mark cuban calls it a slippery slope. In terms of shall we kick him out and go outside of the constitution . Should we take steps to really condemn people for what they say in the privacy of their own home that happens to be recorded . Thats a slippery slope i dont want to get on. Reporter sterling is accused of going on a racist rant to his exgirlfriend, who allegedly recorded the entire conversation. Dont come to my games. And houses. Reporter last night, the miami heat staged a silent protest by turning their jerseys insideout. And tonight, the clippers are hosting game five of the western nba conference. The socalled kissing congressman will not seek reelection. Louisiana republican Vance Mcallister was seen in this surveillance video, locked in a passionate kiss with a woman on his staff. An investigation by our new york station, wabc, found an Alarming Number of truckers using their phones instead of paying attention to the road. One driver even using two phones while behind the wheel is raising questions this morning about whether new york states 150 fine and five points on your license is a stiff enough penalty for offenders. When youre looking at a shark that big, that close, i was more concerned with the mouth area and the size of the teeth than the size of what tracking device was on it. Its like swimming with a submarine with teeth, its so big. I mean, its huge. Its unbelievable down there. Marine experts arent sure how many great whites enter the gulf. And the commissioner will discuss the disbly marry actions against Donald Sterling who is believed the person heard in a recording with the former mistress making racist remarks. Who could be fined 1 million but it is not clear how far the powers reach. The coach believes that a strong message is coming from the nba and warriors coach mark jackson is deferring to the commissioner for the punishment but when asked if he should be fired he wants to see them healed. The people i know, the commissioner on down, are not satisfied and feel as disgusted as every day folks.
