Reporter the frantic search for people trapped in debris continued through the night. Rescuers digging through dangerously thick mud. 15 feet deep in some areas. The conditions are muddy. In places, its like quick sand. Other areas are not accessible at this time. Reporter pick occurs from above the scene show the scope. This Rural Community north of seattle buried by a mudslide measuring a square mile. It looks as if a whole side of the mountain came crashing down. Total devastation. I mean, its just unbelievable. It reminds me of what a tornado looks like. When its touched the ground. There really is no stick standing in the path of the slide. Reporter at least 18 people are still missing, including reid millers son. If hes still alive, who knows what kind of condition hes in. Reporter shawn wright and two other men struggled through the soupy mud to find a mother and child laying in the remains of their home. They used chain saws to cut them out. Where we got hurt was just debris. It was all debris. Reporter nearly 30 homes were destroyed or damaged. Several people hospitalized including a 5monthold infant. Its been surreal. As we hear from clayton sandell, it may be awhile before we know if theyre from the missing plane. Reporter this morning, ten search planes have taken off from here in perth, scouring a vast section of ocean looking for any sign of flight 370. Flight cruise on australian, chinese, japanese, and american search planes are crisscrossing search areas of 26,000 square miles. The goal is to get human eyes on the elusive pieces of debris being seen from outer space by satellites. Its a gorgeous sunny day here in perth. In the search area 1500 miles southwest of here, the forecast calls for rain. That, of course, cuts down on visibility. Making the tough job of spotting objects in the water even tougher. Today, two giant transport planes from china are flying the search area for the first time. And today, Chinese State media reported that t air crews on a chinese plane may have spotted suspicious objects in the indian ocean. No confirmation to what theyve found, in anything. And in the water, an Australian Navy ship is on the scene. Several more from china are on the way. The u. S. Navy has moved a socalled black box locater into the region. Its towed underwater behind a ship and can hear the beeps from the blacks boxes all the way to a depth of 20,000 feet. The black boxes are critical to finding out what happened to malaria 370. Now the u. S. Navy tells us this is purely a precautionary measure. They want to be ready in case debris is confirmed.
