back to the penins law. look at the heavier shade of green. that's where we are looking at heavy. it picks up as we get down toward union city. but the heaviest rain has been confined in the upper elevations where monterey has seen in excess of 4.5 inches. the santa clara valley just a quarter inch. more to come with a flash flood watch along the coast for the coastal flood watch. but then right along the southwestern portion of santa clara and santa cruz we are looking at the potential for some flooding downwind of the debris flow of the loma fire. more on the forecast coming up. carolyn. >> thank you. as lisa said, the bay area is bracing for more rain today. it's a welcome site for many, but in the santa cruz mountains, there could be flooding and mudslides in the loma fire burn area. that's where we find abc7 news reporter leslie brinkley. good morning, leslie. we are just off highway 17 off of summit road. the rain has picked up pace in the last hour. the big fear is erosion. there are downed trees, downed powerlines near here. be be be be be be is water run off on the charred soil could be a problem. the rain simply can't soak in. so it's a hazard for flooding and for run off. other slopes, the rain is turning the soil into mud with some firefighters call peanut butter. it lick which guys and slides down the hill. watershed emergency response team is assessing creeks and the land up hear this weekend to identify those danger spots, the problematic spots in the fire zone. but again, in the last hour, the winds picking up, the rains picking up, and we are getting a hot of precipitation up here. i'm leslie brinkley, abc7 news. >> leslie, thank you. today's wet weather follows yesterday's rain and wind across the bay area that created a number of challenges. the stormy weather caused problems for drivers and had crews scrambling to keep up with downed trees and power lines. some pg&e customers are still in the dark because of the rain and wind. abc7 news reporter lisa amin gulezian has more. >> reporter: pg&e crews are hard at work in daly city on beliveau avenue. this is just one of many spots throughout the bay area where the storm brought down power lines. >> i saw wires swinging back and forth. when they hit the other cables, that's when the sparks came out. that's when i called 911. >> nearly 2,000 homes and businesses lost power. not far away on southbound 280 at the on-ramp a flooded roadway caused this car to stall. others slowly inched by in a foot of sand and water. heavy rain and clogged drains are to blame for many flooded streets. the storm also made for dangerous driving conditions. but before the rain came the wind and the damage it brought n san mateo, this large tree fell on some cable lines at el camino and beliveau. and on treasure island, the annual music festival, which goes on rain or shine, lost a lot of concertgoers once the storm came. >> this is ridiculous. it's not fun. >> look at us. we are drenched. time to go! >> organizers were forced to shut down access to the pier because of high wind. in fact, medics rushed a woman to the hospital after an atm machine blew over and cut her leg. abc7 news. abc7 news was in san francisco's castro district last night where you can see a large tree branch fell on a car. it happened across the street from sutter health. no one was hurt. strong winds in san francisco brought down muni lines in pacific heights. no one was hurt by the fallen lines. downed lines were a problem all over the bay area since the storm first hit thursday. pg&e has reported more than 173,000 outages since then. many have been restored. right now at least 200 in the south bay, 200 in the east bay, 170 in the north bay, and one customer in san francisco are still without power. >> a mudslide caused a crash on highway 101 in marin county yesterday. four vehicles were caught in the muck that spilled on to 101 in cord da madera. fortunately no one was seriously hurt. matt shared this beautiful photo it us on twitter of what it looked like in santa rosa after the storm passed through last night. use the hashtag abc7 now to share weather pictures and video where you live. jury selection is expected to start tomorrow for the man accused of killing morgan hill teenager sierra lamar. anthony garcia torres has pleaded not guilty. lamar vanished in 2012 on her way to school and her body has never been found, despite several hundred hours of searching better police and volunteers. prosecutors are seek the death penalty against garcia torres. the trial could last six months. in sonoma county, authorities are searching for a gunman who shot three people, kill one. it happened just after 8:00 last night on highway 116 south in rural sebastopol. investigators have not released details of the suspect. we are learning more about the tense moments that led up to the shooting of a san francisco police officer. kevin downs was shot in the head friday night but survived. he remains in critical but stable condition this morning. police say if the bullet struck just a scent meetner the wrong direction, officer downs could have died. sergio win fahnna mass the story. >> officer kevin downs and his partner responded to the lakeview shopping center after security reported a man who was threatening customers. there was a foot chase and then gunfire. >> two people and the cop was running this direction, that way, and then all we heard was four or five shots, and then we heard a scream like an officer down really loudly. >> officer downs was shot, according to the interim police chief the bullet entered and exited his head. >> he underwent surgery to remove fragments from his brain, and he still has partial paralysis on the side of his body from the shot to his head. >> a friend says he comes from a family whose been dedicated to public service. he was two years on the force. his father is a retired policeman from the department. >> his family has given so much to this city and country. >> he even launched or helped launch a group vets. police cornered him. >> there was a various number of pops and then we saw somebody running through the campus. so we went into a lockdown protocol and got all the kids in the stairways. >> in the end the man tried to hold off police next to a playground but after an exchange of gunfire he was injured and eventually taken into custody. police have not released his name. he's recovering at san francisco general hospital, along with the officer he's accused of shooting. sergio quintana, abc7 news. >> in less than three seconds a longstanding piece of bay area history disappeared. [explosions] >> video from caltrans shows crews imploding another pier from the old eastern span of the bay bridge yesterday. they used 8,000 pounds of explosives. a special bubble curtain in the water is supposed to minimize the impact to the environment. last fall a larger pier was blown up the same way. implosions are planned for the rest of the remaining piers. the next one is scheduled in just two weeks. it's amazing how they do that. >> very cool. we are still looking at rain in santa cruz. 61 degrees right now t looks like a turned-up ocean and we have a flood watch. more rain in police have arrested a man who drove a pickup truck off a bridge in san diego, killing four people in the park below. it matched during a motorcycle festival. the driver was speeding when he lost control, striking a guardrail. his truck then fell 60 feet into the park, landing on a vender's booth near a stage where a band was performing. four people inside were crushed to death. nine others, including the driver, were injured. police believe he had been drinking. authorities have identified the man as 25-year-old richard anthony sapoleo. a u.s. navy member stationed at the navy base on coronado island. donald trump on the attack again. and wikileaks as released another batch of e-mails from the clinton campaign. abc news reporter mary bruce has the latest from washington. ♪ >> i of her supporters remain enthusiastic. democratic vice presidential nominee tim kaine and newt gingrich are talking harshly about our opposing parties. on "this week" "they spoke about what trump calls a rigged election. up gingrich said people should be concerned about honest elections and voters should monitor polling sites. >> we need to call on everybody to speak out about the fact that we everything do to maximize bad news about me. >> they face-off in the third and final presidential debate this wednesday in las vegas. senator bernie sanders made a campaign stop in san francisco yesterday. abc7 news was there as the former presidential candidate spoke to supporters of proposition 61. the ballot measure would require all prescription drugs bought by the state to be priced at or below the price paid by the department of veterans affairs. sanders said the skyrocketing costs of prescription drugs is hitting older people especially hard. >> elderly people are cutting their pills in half because they cannot afford the medicine that they need. >> opponents of prop 61 include the california medical association and the veterans of foreign wars. they say it would increase and killed in kentucky. officials say the 15-year-old trinity ga the y died at the university of kentucky medical center. the shooting happened at a cookout restaurant in lexington. police say witnesses report gunshots between two cars. officers found one of those cars and stopped two people for questioning. tyson gay competed in the last three summer olympics. firefighters in nevada have made some progress in battling the little valley fire. it's burned about 3400 acres since it started friday morning. it's now 20% contained. fire crews worked through strong winds in a valley in reno. the fire has destroyed 22 homes. some oakland firefighters have been sent to help. no injuries have been reported. the cause of the fire is under investigation. now your accuweather forecast with lisa argen. >> good morning to you. a 1 on our storm impact scale today. still looking at some pretty good rain in part of the mountains and santa clara. less than an inch for the entire bay area but the santa cruz mountains could seen several additional inches of rain. monterey, all the way up to the sierra nevada. although northstar got a dusting of snow. highest elevations, there's an advisory there. you notice the darker green here from 680. morgan hill, 101 and looking at lighter rains up toward 580 in pleasanton. light returns union city and all the way up towards alamo and perhaps walnut creek getting a little wet. notice the sharp cut off where we are then dry in parts of our east bay and north bay. but we have a coastal flood watch due to the high tide which comes in at noon today and the full moon. here's the rain in the sierra nevada. mid-40s right now. with a winter weather advisory until 11:00, more snow. 3 to 6 inches above donner pass is possible. winds will get very, very gusty there. down to a mile and a quarter visibility in the bay. 3 miles mountain view and san jose. emeryville you have sunshine. low to mid-60s here. half moon bay still rather gray. at sfo, believe it or not, no delays. a lot of fog along the golden gate bridge. you see the wet pavement here from 280 in santa rosa. rain showers south of san francisco. more showers for san francisco, the north bay, oakland and emeryville and berkeley tonight. we will time it out for you this evening. but a coastal flood advisory and the beech hazard statement right on through the evening hours. we are still looking at more rain here, and that is causing some of those mudslides and debris flow from the loma fire. as we go through the forecast hour by hour, look where the rain sits. we are still looking at the stalled-out front. it begins to break out in the afternoon. i'm stopping it here. this is where the next wave of energy will move through the north bay 7:00 tonight bringing rain to san francisco, vallejo and redwood city and then it winds down throughout the evening hours. it will take throughout the day, and with that we have a soggy raiders forecast with temperatures perhaps in the low to mid-60s there. it won't be raining the whole time but on and off light rains and the winds will pick up, as well, along the coast. the accuweather seven-day forecast, breezy condition was the light showers around the bay area. heavier rain down by santa cruz and monterey. then looking at morning drizzle, afternoon sun and then president clinton on tuesday. mid-70s by the middle of the week. we aren't going to stop there. how about 80s and an offshore flow and near 70 at the beaches. so, wow, is that a 1830 or what? >> it is, and it's a good reason to have that weather app because number 1. we have some rain falling in the east bay and the south bay. we will see less in the north bay and san francisco. but could see some flooding. here's what we are watching. we have an urban and small stream flood advisory for southwestern santa clara county, central santa cruz until 1:45. rockslides and mudslides are possible and here's why. look at the rain. heavier cells with the lighter showers from danville, 680, dublin and pleasanton. livermore you are getting wet. we take you out back west toward the coast. half moon bay, the pumpkin festival will be wet n santa cruz proper we are looking at not only the flooding from the rain, but because of high tide and the on-shore winds. looking at kind of a messy scenario for the southern half of the bay area. more rain to come for the rest of you, i will detail it for you and time it out coming putt up >> moderator: you just heard the bay area is bracing for more rain today. the santa cruz mountain might bear the brunt with 1 to 4 inches of rain today, which means there could be flooding and mudslides in the loma fire burn area. abc7 news reporter leslie brinkley joins us live. leslie. it was drizzling and foggy. just about an hour, hour you and a half ago things got a lot worse out hear. it's come down. i'm watching sheets of rain blow through here. that's causing the problem with the run-off. right below me here the water is really starting to run off the hillsides, collect and that's the problem. they tell us the charred soil won't absorb all the water coming down. get is how much more rain does this toppling trees. abc news reporter neal has the latest. >> from portland to seattle, back-to-back rain and wind storms over the pacific northwest. >> my neighbor's tree, i heard it crack and the transformer blew like flames flew four feet out of the air and it all fell down and the power went out. >> in portland the nerve-racking site of a crane swaying in the wind. that crane held up. but the biggest problem repeated again and again, trees. trees through homes, smashing power lines and blocking roads n seattle a father and his four-year-old son were injured when a tree branch broke off and fell on them. the boy had serious injuries and was rushed to a hospital. across town a single tree fell across four parked cars. in oregon flash flooding made for some scary moments saturday as several motorists drove into water they thought was no deep than a huge puddle. that was a mistake. watch as this car bobs and floats. one man forced to climb out his window to get to safety. others relying on strangers for help. >> i just thought it would be shallower, not waist-high. i was scared when i saw how high it was. >> abc news, seattle newly released video shows a chicago police officer getting attacked while trying to arrest a suspect. the officer says she did not shoot him because she feared a community backlash. a warning, this video may be disturbing. in did you can see the officer struggling with a man police say was high on pcp. as she tries to putt put him in handcuffs, he grabs her hair and takes her down to the ground. other officers used their stun guns on the man. they eventually arrested him. the officer is in the hospital with head and neck injuries. a hotel clerk in michigan put his life in danger against someone who tried to rob him because he felt it was his duty. surveillance video shows a woman wearing a mask walking into the hotel and demanding money. she has a gun, and when she set it down, the quick-thinking clerk grabs it and jumps over the counter and tackles her. during the struggle, the gun went off. no one was shot. he managed to rip off her mask so the cameras could record her face. >> i saved my community, my customers, my job. and also i think this is my job. i did not want any people to be harmed or injured. >> police tracked the woman down and arrested her. allen noel, the clerk, said he does not regret fighting back, even though his wife is a little upset with him. former nfl player dennis byrd, whose career with the new york jets ended early because of a neck injury, was killed in a car accident. byrd was involved in a head-on collision yesterday near his home in oklahoma. back in 1992 byrd suffered a broken neck after slamming headfirst into a teammate, leaving him briefly paralyzed. he never fully recovered from the injury, walking with some difficulty and going through continuous rehab. byrd was 50 years old. >> a high school football coach in toledo, ohio could face disciplinary action for his response to a student's national anthem protest. the student refused to stand like niners' quarterback colin kaepernick, whose protest has inspired similar actions all over the nation. the teenager said his coach did not like the gesture. >> he said, you aren't colin kaepernick. i'm not trying to be. you don't disrespect our country and flag. you can just leave. >> the district released a statement supporting first amendment rights, saying if players choose to sit or kneel during the playing of the national anthem, they will not face disciplinary action and they can participate in the game. school event, held in kentfield, honored military veterans from all over the bay area, including a vet of pearl harbor. the dinner raises money for an organization called building better citizens for america. happening today, 100 injured veterans and their supporters will begin a week-long cycling event. the organization "ride to recovery" provides rehabilitation programs to the vets. u-haul donated a truck to the group after theirs, filled with donations, was stolen last week. the cyclists will spend the next seven days riding more than 500 miles to los angeles. the ride to recovery california challenge started in palo alto just a short time ago. will they be riding in the rain? >> definitely. it's been heavy around santa cruz and gilroy. check it out with the rain coming down heaviest rain in the south bay but it's moving into san francisco and on the peninsula right now. we will track it for you. we are looking at less than a third of an inch around the bay but several inches possible in the santa cruz area. that's why we have an urban and small stream flood advisory until 1:45 from the national weather service for central santa cruz, for rockslides and mudslides possibly. so all morning long we have seen the steady stream of moisture from the central coast into the sierra nevada. it's gotten more intense with the past couple of hours. you can see the darker green, the yellow here. they have had three quarter inch of rain around los gatos. this morning it was asternth to .2 in san jose. pleasanton, light rain, 680. dublin, a little damp for you and 580. on the peninsula, look howry wet you are, montara, highway 1 in palo alto. we head further north and the city will be getting wet. this slug of moisture moving into marin county, as well. you can see in the past few frames it's increased. more moisture. it will move north before it becomes more scattered. and then another piece of moisture headed our way this evening. so a flash flood watch until 11:00 tonight. we have the high tide coming in at noon. in the sierra nevada, they have had a little snow but it's mostly been rain. snow has to be pretty high up there. a winter weather advisory until 11:00 tomorrow before 7,000 feet. looking at 3 to 6 inches of snow. winds, they have a problem, up to 50 miles an hour. look at the fog from san carlos to half moon bay to san jose. just anywhere from 1 to 3 miles. this is mt. tam. the winds look pretty calm here. low 60s. we are looking at muggy conditions. but we are looking at more rain for everyone, and the airport has really clouded over. you can see how wet it is there on the peninsula. upper 50s to low 60s. this is san jose where it has been raining all night long. rain showers, they were mainly south of san francisco. now they are moving in. more showers for everyone throughout the afternoon and evening hours. and sunny and warmer throughout the rest of the week. let's time it out. 9:00, most of the activity in the south bay. the central coast by noontime. you see more showers popping up. but by about 4:00 it looks like the north bay from sonoma to santa rosa to marin county looking at the showers pressing through san francisco about 7:00, 8:00 in emeryville. the raiders game a little soggy. tomorrow morning a few leftover showers and then we are in a much, much different weather pattern. this afternoon mid-60s and on and off rain. looking at windy conditions as the front pushes through. it's been a soggy weekend. it continues today. tomorrow drizzle and sun. watch out for the fog tomorrow morning.
