There are returns to the north but you will notice more cloud cover from marin county up through sonoma and napa today. In and out of the clouds but temperatures still on the cool side. 51 san jose. Morgan hill 48. Clouds not really an issue right now. Its the cooler start. Anywhere from 11 degrees cooler novato, 3 or 4 degrees cooler from Mountain View to san jose. A chilly 44 degrees right here in santa cruz. Numbers in the upper 50s. We will call it partly cloudy today and temperatures will be near normal. Home is destroyed after a fire this morning. Crews on the scene say the roof of the home collapsed when they arrived. House was under renovation and between tenants so fortunately no one was inside when it started. No firefighters were hurt. The cause is under investigation. Also developing news in alaska this morning. A magnitude 7. 1 earthquake has hit the southern part of that state, waking residents and shaking buildings. The usgs reports the quake struck around 1 30 this morning alaska time about 160 miles southwest of anchorage. Waking residents and shaking buildings. The National Weather service said a tsunami is not expected because of how deep the quake struck. There have been several aftershocks, the strongest 4. 7. About 9,000 people are without power. No injuries or Property Damage have been reported. Super bowl, super frustration. The big game is two weeks away but super bowl 50 gridlock is here. Confusing and irritating drivers in San Francisco in preparation for super bowl city major streets are closed. Southbound lanes of the embarcadero near the ferry building, Market Street from beil to stewart, and other areas blocked off. Alyssa harrington has more on the gridlock. Its the first day of street closers in downtown San Francisco while the city prepares for super bowl 50. And already [horns honking] in some spots traffic is a mess. We cant get anywhere. People are running across the street super fast like weaving around cars and even at green lights we cant move. Oh, my gosh. It took me like an hour going around, trying to figure out where im going to find a parking place. Road closers include part of Market Street near the ferry building, which is being transformed into super bowl city. We found frustrated drivers blocking cross walks and intersections and some running red lights. We waited for three green lights to turn finally. New this video from sky 7hd shows traffic earlier in the day. Another large event, the walk for life, brought out thousands who marched at Justin Herman plaza. Ziggies burgers is stocking up on restaurant supplies. They are unsure if delivery trucks will be be ail to make it to his place the next two weeks. It will be a challenge because to come here you have to cross Market Street so without crossing market its very hard. The other way you maybe drive an extra 15, 20 minutes to get to you. Meanwhile Traffic Control officers help drivers navigate their way to the bay bridge, but some are already fed up and vow to stay out of the city until the super bowl is over. Im not coming here. Im staying home. The closers will be in place for the next three weeks. A lot of drivers couldnt figure out how to get to the bay bridge. This morning the east coast is beginning to dig out from a massive blizzard. The heaviest storm seen in years. This is a live picture of the white house, surrounded by snow. The storm shut down that area. Baltimore and new york city has been hit by the second heaviest snowfall in history. Central park is seeing 26. 8 inches of snow. Just missing the recordsetting 26. 9 inches in february, 2006. At least 17 deaths are blamed on the weather resulting from car crashes, shoveling snow and hypothermia. More than 80,000 people are without power. Many people have been stuck for hours. Didnt expect to be caught in the middle of snowzilla. Shes been one after another truck stuck. Nonstop. And it doesnt seem like we are getting anywhere, honest. In new york city a travel ban was lifted about 4 00 our time. But officials are hoping people will still say off the streets. This was a common sight in washington, d. C. Drivers helping other drivers who were stuck. Pushing, digging and helping to tow the cars. Snowplows kept working at Reagan International airport. Normal Flight Operations there and Dulles International are challenged the next few days. A live report in there in about 30 minutes. Because of the blizzard on the east coast more than 12,000 flights have been cancelled. That includes more than 3,000 flights today. Abc7 news was at sfo where 41 departures and 34 arrivals to and from the area were scrubbed yesterday. Just one flight in and out of oaklands airport was cancelled, and there were no east coast flights scheduled at minettasan jose. The airlines are hoping to get some flights up and running this afternoon. Public safety officials in pacifica are keeping a close eye on homes on a crumbling hillside along esplana drive. Massive waves are pounding against the shore, further undermining a cliff thats been eroding for years now. Abc7 News ReporterSergio Quintana has the story. Police were posted along the pacifica waterfront to keep people away from the high surf and damaged walkway and construction crews continued their efforts to shore up some homes along the water. Kimi came to see it. She remembers el nino of 199798. It was bad but not this bad. You can see several yards of the cliff near this avenue in pacifica fall away. Further exposing a line of apartments to the ocean below. I dont think even we knew how bad until yesterday or the day before when it actually started happening to peoples houses that are now on the edge of the cliff. Two apartment buildings along the avenue had been condemned over the years but officials are now watching a third just to make sure residents are safe. Pacifica city manager has taken the unusual step of declaring a state of emergency. Its a series of issues, none of which is truly catastrophic, but you take them together they are clearly outpacing what the still can do to respond. From sky 7hd you can see what these talking about. A sink hole opened up and swallowed a chunk of the walkway, and one home just a few blocks away has exposed pipe and a portion of the property is dangling over the hillside which has been washed away. Lawyers for Raymond Shrimp Boy Chow are making another effort to get him out of his legal troubles. They want the trial judge off the case, accusing him of a conflict of interest. Fridays court filing also calls for setting aside this months jury verdict that found chow guilty on all 162 counts against him. The charges include murder, conspiracy to commit murder and racketeering. Chow is scheduled to be sentenced in march. A man from las altos is accused of murder and police are still looking for the body of the man hes accused of killing. On friday coworkers reported kyle myrick missing from gt sports, a motorcycle dealership in san jose yesterday Police Arrested steve hlebo for myricks murder. They found a crime scene nearby. They believe he transferred myricks body in his pickup truck. The lights are back on this morning on the bay bridge. The chp confirms there was a partial power outage on the western span that knocked out lights illuminating the towers and the bridge deck starting around 5 30 last evening. The power came on around 9 35. No word on what might have caused the outage. More than 200 children in the east bay will have new books, classroom supplies and new technology after a fundraise everybody last night. For the sixth year students as young as kindergarten learned mandrin as part of their education. That event included martial arts performances, a chinese 9course dinner and raffle drawings. The fremont mayor is a big supporter. His son is in the program. You might think this house uses a lot of water to top off the pool that loses two inches a week or to cultivate an extensive vegetable gardens, but not so. They only twos twothirds of their monthly allotment. We have tanks here full and these tanks are 90 full. Thats the reason. They installed a custom designed rain fall systems. Each thank those 530 gallons and the pool 1300 gallons either all filled by the rainfall on the roof. Once full they can restore the aquafir. I dont think ice possible to store too much. You can just empty it out in the garden even though the garden doesnt need it for growth but it will refill the aquafirs. The ground water sinks whether you lose the water from the ground and we can help that. A system like this cost 6 thousand dollars, but a contractor said you can start small with a barrel or two and add more storage later. Runoff helps irrigate summer crops such as tomatoes. Collecting rainwater also has benefits. Preventing water from going off to the bay. Preventing street maintenance where the storm water runoffs takes leaves and debri with it, it clogs up some of the drains in the streets. Maintenance crews have to go out and take care of it. And you will notice that we are doing pretty well, but we certainly need more. 108 of normal in livermore. Sfo with 10 inches of rain, 98 of normal. Totals are looking like they should but three or four years in a drought we need about 150 or 200 of normal to get back on track. The envelope arrived and the 500 was gone. He took pictures and scanned it and it looked like somebody ripped it out. The photo showed the envelope had been torn open, taped with postal tape and marked with postal stamps. Its obvious it had been tampered with. Lickly rita sent it by registered mail and insured it for 500. She filed a claim with the post office. I said this is what happened, and they said we will take care of it. However, no one responded to her claim. Rita kept calling the postal managers. I said i have paperwork, red tape, has to be inspected. The whole year went by. Still no response. Not fair, not right. Then whats the point of having insurance . She contacted 7 on your side, and the Postal Service told us rita never filed a claim. But we pointed out the claim is right there. After that, rita got a call. Oh, we have good news. The Postal Service tells us due to an administrative oversight during management changes, the registered mail inquiry was not processed. Once district leadership was advised of the situation, they took action to accept the claim and make the customer whole. The postal worker came by and delivered her two checks totaling 500. Im just thrilled. Its a lot of money. The Postal Service tells us that the 500 gift card remains lost. So its not clear exactly what happened to it.
