>> grge, everyone, i'll carolyn tyler. thank you for joining us on sunday, february 18th. let's start with a quick look at the weather with lisa argen. >> our cold front has yet to arrive, but we're already feeling the effects ahead of it. live doppler 7 showing the scattered clouds. you can see the cloud cover in walnut creek. 50 in mountain view, 50 in half moon bay. it looks blustery and wintry from mt. tam. the winds are blowing and temperatures are in the 40s and 50s. so this is probably not going to get much warmer, the scene today, because with the winds gusti gusting to 23 miles an hour, the cool air mass is on the way. starting out rather typical. but by the afternoon, the winds are gusty, the temperatures are 20 degrees cooler, and we have some precip along the shoreline that could fall as a rain/snow mix, and that's not our only chance. perhaps thursday and saturday we get measurable rain. details coming up. >> thank you, lisa. developing news out of contra costa county. firefighters say a pan on the stove caused this two-alarm fire at an apartment complex in martinez. crews arrived to find heavy smoke and flames coming from the building. one firefighter was injured. no residents were hur firefighters say five of the eight units there sustained fire damage. it's unclear how many residents are now displaced. more developing news out of san leandro, crews from contained a three-alarm fire at a commercial building. firefighters responded just before 4:00 this morning at tea garden street. flames spread to nearby businesses. it was reported as two-alarms, but was upgraded to three. officials say there are no reports of injuries. this is video from brianna, who shared it with us on twitter. she saw the flames from the northbound lanes of 880. san jose police are looking for whoever stabbed a man outside a mall, sending him to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. it happened at 7:40 last night, near the grand century mall on story road, where thousands were celebrating the vietnamese tent festival. there was a large fight outside when the man was stabbed. no suspects have been identified. a good samaritan risked her life racing into a burning home, rescuing a man trapped inside. abc7 news reporter katie utehs spoke with the woman whose heroic actions saved a senior citizen from the flames. >> and i look over, and it looks like the fire is right next to me. >> reporter: samantha barnhouse is small yet brave. firefighters wear protective gear to clear this apartment on pepper tree way. but moments earlier, samantha saved a man's life with her bare hands. she and her family stepped out to head to the park. she saw smoke. when she realized she was the only one there to help, she ran across the street. >> the fire's roaring and everything. >> and then she said, i can't -- and she's crying at me. she says, i can't, my roommate, he's paralyzed. he can't get up. i can't get him out, you have to help me. >> she started past the flaming stove towards the back bedrooms. th once she reached lois burton, she grabbed the office chair and pulled. >> and i look back in the hallway, and it's black. >> reporter: she put a robe her burton's face to protect from smoke. >> it was incredibly dangerous. >> she yanked the chair and the two fell out the front door. >> the fire was out pretty much all the front windows and the front door. >> reporter: burton said he r re-injured his hip, but he's doing well. >> reporte >> i'm happy he's a alive. >> reporter: heroics not lost on samantha's husband of ten years. >> i'm amazed by her. she is the most amazing person in the world. >> reporter: in antioch, katie utehs, abc7 news. we are learning more about the florida high school shooter. a child welfare report r long list of behavioral disorders. abc news reporter adrian banker has the latest. >> this morning, we get a glimpse of what it was like to live with florida high school shooting suspect nikolas cruz. the couple responsible for taking care of him after his mother's death, kimberly and james snead, who tell "the sun" sentinel, we had this monster living under our roof and we didn't know. saying he followed house rules to the t. they described him as depressed and say he went to a therapist just days before the shooting. the night before the massacre seemed like any other. while the justice department investigates failings within the fbi to report past warnings of cruz's behavior, there's already talk of his sentencing. the broward county state attorney says this grievous act is the type of case the death penalty was designed for, this in someone to the public defender who says he hopes prosecutors will agree to life in prison if cruz pleads guilty now. >> we have a move here to help victims move >> reporter: and finkelstein said a report says cruz had a history of mental heath checks, adhd and had cut himself on snapchat, expressing his desire to purchase guns. >> this is not a coral springs tragedy. this is a community tragedy. [ cheers and applause ] >> reporter: and there were raw emotions through impassioned speeches at a uncontrol rally this weekend in response to the violence. >> if you don't study, you will fail. if you do nothing, people continually end up dead. >> we are the people who are going to make ourselves heard the most, because we're the people who have the opportunity to do that. >> reporter: this morning, the trump administration promises to focus on school taste. >> he will make the safety of our nation's schools our top administration priority. >> reporter: adrian banker, abc news. >> this morning, some of the teenagers who survived the florida shooting have announced plans for a demonstration in washington, d.c. next month. they want students from all over the country to join what they're calling a march for our lives. trying to push lawmakers to pass tougher gun laws. organizers behind the women's march, an anti-trump and female empowerment program are also calling for a 17-minute walk-out on march 14th to protest congressional congressional inaction. nearly two dozen san francisco residents graduated from that high school where the shooting took place. many gathered yesterday to make a video of support. abc7 news reporter lisa amengula reports. >> he was just a nice guy, he would help us out if we were in trouble. >> reporter: he's talking about the athletic director chris hixon who tried to help students escape during the deadly shooting. >> this is my graduation announcement from class of 1999 at marjory stoneman douglas school. >> reporter: jennifer blancas admits she's in shock after the shooting. >> i feel helpless because i don't understand. >> reporter: these are photos from her time at what alumni call msd. her senior portrait, prom pictures and her drama class. >> it's just hard to believe. >> reporter: what's even harder to accept for jennifer's sister and kathryn fischer, another msd alum, is that assistant football coach, aaron feis, who also died, was in her graduating class. >> i was honored to be a part of the student body, the same year that he was there. i thought he -- he is a true hero. >> reporter: feis football. he jumped between a student and the shooter. she plans to attend her 20-year high school reunion next year, specifically because of what's happened. >> and if you would like to make a difference for the victims about to get a lot colder. >> we're already witnessing that outside. a wind shift in the north way. i few of you reporting a few sprinkles out there. the golden gate bridge, temperatures in the low 50s right now, but the winds are kicking up. we'll set the stage for a wintry sce scene. in fact, we're looking at very low snow levels tonight into monday night. particularly tricky out there. i'll whipping in the winds. lisa look shortly with a full accuweather forecast. a spacex satellite launch from southern california has been delayed. the falcon 9 rocket, carrying an observation satellite for spain was scheduled to lift off from vandenburg air force base this morning. that satellite carries an instrument to make radar images of the earth for government and commercial purposes. spacex officials tweeted the team is taking additional time to perform final checkouts. the launch has now been pushed back to wednesday. neighbors in san francisco are standing together to fight property crime. you know it's increased dramatically over the last year. abc7 news reporter elissa harrington has the story. >> reporter: at the base of san francisco's famous tiled steps in the intersunset are these signs, warning people about car break-ins. the city didn't post these. these are homemade, the work of residents fed up with what they call a lack of leadership. they started their own crimewatch, called stop crime sf. >> it was a lot of frustration in the city. people are banding together to really hold the criminal justice system accountable, from the police, prosecutors, judges and politicians. >> reporter: saturday they invited phil ting to speak. >> san francisco is getting hit like crazy. >> reporter: he introduced a bill that would result in car break-ins being classified as misdemeanors. >> we can only create the laws or fix the laws and then they need to be implemented. >> reporter: rachel miller garcia said the warning signs are helping and some residents and installed security cameras. >> they're doing everything from breaking into tourist cars in the neighborhood to running up and down our streets and ringing our doorbells to see if someone's home, and then breaking in. >> reporter: they also follow court cases, members say too many criminals are immediately let back out on the street. the group plans to attend public hearings on this issue. elissa harrington, abc7 news. basketball superstars lebron james and steph curry are responding to controversial comments from fox news host lau laura ingraham. she said players should stay out of politics and just shut up and dribble. >> we will definitely not shut up and dribble. i will definitely not do that. >> we'll kind of try to put athletes and black athletes in a box to say, you know, basketball is the only thing that you can provide in this world, kinda -- i mean, obviously very upsetting. >> ingram made her comments after a video lebron james released last week where he and warriors forward kevin durant were hily critical of president trump. durant, lebron and curry will be in the nba all-star game tonight in los angeles. abc7 news sports director larry beal is there details this morning involving the warriors and the operators of oracle arena. an arbitration hearing is set for the summer over millions of dollars of debt payments. the warriors don't believe they have to pay once the team moves to san francisco. but the coliseum say the warriors owe $40 million for a bond debt. the bay area news group reports the hearing starts july 23rd. the arbitrator's decision, we're told, is final. a tech conference brought together a school girls to inspire them towards science and math. the girls heard from female tech leaders from some of the most powerful named in the industry. each emparted a powerful message about why there should be more women pursuing a stem education. >> the stem field's more powered over by males. >> you want to get in the game? >> yeah. >> that event was organized by a fremont high school student who wants to close the gender gap in the engineering and technology fields. >> now your accuweather forecast. >> a cold front is working through the bay area. some of you are seeing showers, the winds are picking up. here's live doppler 7 right now. you can pick out the speckling of the clouds. that's indicative of a pretty cold air mass. from mt. tam right now, it looks a little more like the season, 51, san francisco, 53 in oakland. mid 50s san jose. 50 at the coast. and from our east bay hills temperatures this morning are still in the 40s and 50s, but they're going to struggle to stay there. in fact, some of these numbers could be the highs for the day. 55 in concord, 54 in surface winds at 24 miles an hour, and up above, 40 miles an hour. north winds, 25 to 40 miles an hour today. evening windchill, what it feels like to your skin, in the 30s. sprinkles, chance we're seeing some of those now and maybe even a mix into snow. the coldest night, monday into tuesday where the national weather service has issued a freeze watch and we'll likely see this upgraded to a freeze warning. most of the moisture is running parallel to the coast and is offshore. but we've already seen some showers. with the air mass getting colder, it's likely the snow levels will be at a thousand feet or even sea levels. so the best chance of accumulating snow will be in the santa cruz mountains. and the winds, check it out, 30 to 35 miles an hour. the yellows indicate lighter winds. finally by tomorrow afternoon, the winds back off, but it's still going to be a breezy and cold day. so from the mountains' standpoint, it looks pretty good. winter weather advisory. a lot of you probably wanting to go up for the presidents holiday, but look what's happening, six inches to under a foot of snow through tomorrow. the advisory through monday afternoon. certainly take the chains if you're headed what way. ten inches tahoe city. as for highs today, struggling to stay into the mid 50s. the northwest winds, gusty at times. sprinkles, the chance of a shower and isolated rain/snow mix. tonight, yeah, we've got the moisture off the coast. so 30s, below freezing in the north bay. tomorrow will be the coldest night with the temperatures sub freezing both monday night and tuesday night. in the valleys, we could see frost. around the coast, this is going to be the coldest air we have seen in many, many years. certainly the season, that's not hard to do with how warm we've been. download our we're starting this half hour with a look at the weather, with our meteorologist lisa argen. >> good morning to you and some of these feathered friends checking out the breeze from walnut creek this morning where we're seeing clouds and feeling the effects of the cold front pushing through the bay area. so, numbers are in the low 50s from mountain view to oakland. half moon bay is 50. and it's sunny here from our emeryville camera, with numbers dropping into the 40s in napa. 55 in concord. some of you have reached your high temperatures already as the northwesterly winds gust up to 25 miles an hour. this is just at the surface. upper elevations, 40 and 50 miles an hour. from our east bay hills camera, partly cloudy with 40s and 50s the next hour. noontime, low 50s, gusty winds throughout the day. some showers, maybe some mixed precip. we could get some neat-looking pictures. it's kind of that rainbow and wintry mix thing happening today. if you can, send us your pictures. ile ha-- i'll have an update coming up. there's developing news. a passenger plane has crashed in a foggy mountainous region of southern iran, killing all 65 people on board. the death toll was listed at 66 earlier this morning, but state media said one passenger did not make that flight. officials say the plane used for short distance regional flying went down south of of tehran. there were 59 passengers, including one child, and six crew members. now to the russia probe, president trump is tweeting, tying together the school shooting in florida with the russia investigation. abc news reporter kenneth moaton has reaction and the latest on the investigation. >> reporter: overnight, president trump blasted the fbi over the florida school shooting and the russia investigation. tweeting, very sad that the fbi missed all the many signals missed out by the florida school shooter. this is not acceptable. they are spending too much time trying to prove russia collusion with the trump campaign. there is no collusion. the president also attacked media coverage of the special counsel's indictment of 13 russians for alleged interference in the 2016 election. the president, who now appears to believe in the investigation, is focused more on when the russians allegedly started meddling. trump tweeting, funny how the fik news media doesn't want to say that the russian group was formed in 2014. maybe they knew i was going to run, even though i didn't know. the indicted russians, accused of spreading fake news on social media accounts and infiltrating the american political process. investigators say the goal to disparage hillary clinton and support donald trump. in an interview, the vice president responded. >> there's no question that russia sought to interfere, perhaps with other countries in our electoral process. it's essential that we take action. top trump administration officials now calling out russia. >> with the fbi indictment, the evidence is now incontrovertible. >> reporter: trump appeared to criticize that comment from his own national security adviser, tweeting, general mcmaster forgot to say that the results of the 2016 election were not impacted or changed by the russians. >> we are now hearing from the family of a hero student who used his body as a human shield, saving his classmates during the massacre. he took bullets so others were not hurt. that school will be closed through wednesday. officials hope to have staff return to campus by the end of the week. abc news reporter victor okendo has the story. >> we just called me and say, dad, somebody shoot me in the back and my leg too. >> reporter: it's the phone call no parent expects to receive. roger burgess's son anthony telling him he'd been shot multiple times at school. >> he was shot four times? >> four times. one in here, one in here, another one -- another one here and he get two on this. >> reporter: but the 15-year-old wasn't going down without a fight. his father tells us anthony saw the gunman coming, shutting the classroom door, pressing his body weight against it, while being shot, protecting the students inside the classroom, all of them making it out alive. >> he's my -- his close friend d beaming with pride as well. >> none of us knew what to do. he took the initiative to save his classmates. >> reporter: the freshman is now in stable condition, but with his harrowing story of survival comes 17 others with heartbreaking endings. ♪ ♪ >> reporter: that song and these black arm bands in honor of this soccer team's fallen player. >> i just have to take all the great things that she did and gave to all of us and carry that in our daily life. >> reporter: and these orange ribbons in memory of jamie guttenburg. >> seeing one lose a member is just unreal. >> reporter: stillman douglas's principal sharing this message of healing. >> and eagles, i promise you, i will hug each and every one of you as many times as you need, and we will get through this together. >> reporter: victor okendo, abc news, parkland, florida. >> now students from that high school are calling for tougher gun control this morning. some of them appeared to "this week" this morning to talk about a walk-out planned for next month. >> people are saying it's not time to talk about gun control. here's a time, march 24th, in every single city. we're going to be marching together as students begging for our lives. this isn't about the gop, this isn't about the democrats. this is about the adults. we feel neglected, you're either with us or against us. >> the students go on to say any politician on either side who's taking money from the nra is responsible for shootings like this one. bay area democratic congressman eric swalwell was asked about a proposal by senator dianne feinstein to raise the age limit to purchase an assault weapon. his response -- >> i think we should ban assault weapons, every country should have a ban on assault weapons. i understand she wants to raise the age to 21. but i actually think we should do what she did before, she led the charge to ban them. >> abc7 news caught up with swalwel in heyward as he met with his constituens for coffee. what was supposed to be a relaxing cruise in the south pacific turned into a violent nightmare for some passengers. this after vicious brawls broke out over the course of several days. the carnival legend set sale from melbourne, australia, but had to return to port after several days of fist fights. the brawls began when one guest stepped on somebody else's flip flops. some blame a group of two dozen people traveling together. >> terrifying, like people screaming, running around, throwing glasses. nig nightmare. >> blood everywhere, people's faces getting smashed in. >> security guards had to intervene, but how they handled the fight is always raising questions. still ahead here on abc7 mornings, our recent streak of warm temperatures is having thompson and draymond green, all representing the warriors in the 67th nba all-star game. instead of east versus west, this year's team lebron versus team steph with tip-off at staples center at 5:00. last night, klay was hoping to recapture the three-point shooting contest. >> good morning, the 67th annual all-star classic, holding their three-point contest at the staples center in l.a., with klay thompson the favorite in his hometown. but a rookie named booker stole his thunder. klay barely made it out of the first round. he hit three straight bonus balls for two points each. this buzzer beater got him to 19 and a spot in the championship round. tobias harris had 17. and devin booker put up 28, which is a new record for a single round, making 20 out of 30 shots. the pressure was on klay. previous record he had, 27 points, but he would fall short, ending with 25. so a new champion was crowned. devin booker of the suns and our own larry beal met up with klay after the contest. >> this was so close, but so far scenario here tonight. >> yeah, i thought i had a good final round performance. 25 would usually win it. but when you're going up a great shooter like devin booker, he winds kick up and the temperatures begin to feel a little bit more like the season. here's a live look outside from mt. tam. you can see the cloud cover and right now, it's shaking a little bit. but the winds are certainly gusty up above, 20 to 40 miles an hour. so in santa rosa, mid 50s today. tomorrow only in the mid 50s. all week long, we struggle to make it to average readings, which wie'll be shy of. you know it had to happen, we were running way too warm for three weeks. the last time it did rain was january 25th. we're in our 23rd dry day, but some of you are reporting showers this morning. so from mountain view to the coast, we've seen a little bit of precip, and that's all we're going to get. usually these very cold systems hold very little moisture and there will be several this week, but that's the point, they're not going to bring much in the way of moisture. you can see from live doppler 7, the speckling of the clouds. that's the indication of the cold, cold air out there. and this is san rafael, it's along the coast, santa cruz in the 60s last, a little bit cooler. and we saw low 70s at the concord airport, the livermore airport, say goodbye to that. we could see record low temperatures for several days. 52 by the delta, as well as livermore, and it's 50 in santa rosa. currently, the winds at the surface, we're looking at very breezy conditions. 23-mile-an-hour winds at the airport. and east bay, 24-mile-an-hour winds and the gusts much, much stronger. san jose, 101. you can see the cloud cover, looks like february. partly cloudy skies, windy and cool today. a freeze watch in effect for monday night into tuesday. the presidents day holiday does not bode well for traveling to the mountains, but we are expecting snow there. with the freezing cold temperatures here, mixed precip, we could see sleet and a rain/snow mix, certainly along the coastal hills. a freeze watch here with widespread sub freezing temperatures to the north, this will be upgraded to a warning as we get 24 hours out from the event. so tonight we're going to be almost as cold, but a little bit of wind will keep us right around freezing. looking at the precip, you can see hs unit's running parallel e coast. certainly the santa cruz mountains has the best chance for accumulating snow. 20 to 30-mile-an-hour wind gusts, they'll ramp up right through the day. in fact, through the afternoon into tomorrow. still going to be breezy, and we'll look at that snow anywhere from half a foot up towards ten inches, perhaps. that's a pretty good bonus for this system. and plan program check a case of wine, 12 bottles, at no cost on their flight. we're witnessing the earliest bud break on record for grapes in wine country. that may not be a good thing. grapevines are starting to bud because the weather's been so warm. that's about to change, but this is about a month earlier than usual. abc7 news reporter wayne freedman talked to experts about what this will mean for wine. >> reporter: it feels like an early spring in the napa county wine country, the mustards are out and the picnickers. there are tourists with not a care in the world. >> idyllic, picturesque. it's poetic. >> reporter: but in the hills above, it's troubling as a new normal seems to be emerging, bud breaks in the first week of february. >> the earliest i've seen. >> in how many years? >> 30 years. >> reporter: martin runs vineyards, and his complexities this season, enough to make him lose sleep. an early bud break is not necessarily good news. it exposes the grapes to a longer risk of frost. >> worst case is you could get a temperature difference that would affect some of the ripening and characteristics of the grapes. >> reporter: the vagaries of the climate, the unpredictable nature of climate change, three of the last five crops is broken early. this the latest challege in a year filled with them. >> this whole big creek bed was on fire. >> reporter: that's winery
