cheerleading is now considered sport in california. it's a step forward, but possibly a leap back for one east bay school district. it covers brentwood and oakley and contra costa county. >> reporter: cheerleading is now a sport. >> incredibly exciting. we feel proud we're being recognized for the hard work we put in. >> reporter: but the designation threatens the cheerleading program in the liberty high school district. >> the girls are athlete. for that to be taken away from us, we were devastated. >> reporter: as districts grapple with the cost. the superintendent proposed cutting additional cheers and implementing stunt cheers. >> i have no problem with that. but you don't cut something out in the district that's been there for years. >> reporter: traditional sideline here is more inclusive because more students can participate. some teams are smaller. >> stunt teams are very small. they allow up to 30 girls. but usually they're not that big, they're usually around 20. >> reporter: more colleges recognize traditional cheer for scholarships. the cell phone video shows the national competition in florida. stunt cheer just isn't as established. >> it's not on the same level. we don't feel like it's an appropriate replacement. >> reporter: the issue goes before the school board at next week's meeting. in the east bay, abc 7 news. smoke inhalation caused the deaths of all 36 victims in the ghost ship fire in oakland. the medical examiner said burns or other injuries did not play a role in their deaths last year. the victims were unable to get out of the burning warehouse. there was a party in several illegal living spaces inside. investigators have not announced what caused the december 2nd fire or any potential criminal charges there. two santa clara deputies are on leave. the sheriff's office said deputy lionel groba hit an inmate in the face. our media partner the mercury news reported there was an attempt to get some leverage on them. the sheriff is working on reforms because of numerous allegations of jail misconduct, including the beating death of an inmate. reuters reports the department of homeland security is considering a move to separate mothers and children who cross the border into the u.s. illegally. it's that kind of idea that instills fear in the households of many immigrant families. but there's help with a new hotline and legal assistance. >> reporter: an unexpected visit by i.c.e. agents caused fear and panic in the neighborhood in january. community activists says calls have come through a new hotline about similar situations. >> we've received over 450 calls since february 10th. it is really the community being afraid. >> reporter: the san francisco immigrant legal and education network set up the hotline for residents to report i.c.e. action. and to inform undocumented immigrants about their legal rights. >> we don't recommend you say anything. if you are arrested, just say your name and ask for an attorney. >> reporter: the mexican consulate in san francisco launched a legal assistance center. the san francisco office has joined 50 mexican consulates to calm fears and offer legal advice to mexican nationals. >> we want them to know their rights and have information from reliable sources. >> reporter: consulate workers are visiting communities. many attorneys are working pro bono. it's their way of staying ahead of the trump administration's promise to stiffer immigration enforcement. a violent robbery attempt in san francisco was caught on surveillance video. take a look. watch as the man with a gun and hammer knocked over a woman who works at a jewelry store on grant avenue. police shared the surveillance video yesterday. the man waved his gun around, ordered employees to the ground and smashed display cases. he didn't take anything. here's what he looks like without his mask. no one was hurt there. special needs child was left in a nova school bus for three hours. the 4-year-old student boarded at the nova education center 3:30 on monday. the driver parked near his own home with what he thought was an empty bus. after he received a phone call from the dispatcher, the driver found the child sleeping underneath a seat. the city of san jose announced the hiring of a new director of emergency services. ray reardon has experience in the bay area. a city spokesman tells abc 7 news his hire just after last week's flooding is purely coincidental. the last director left his post last november and there had been a national search under way. assistant city manager dave sykes served as emergency services director for the city during the flooding. happening today, san jose mayor sam lacarda will be back out in the neighborhoods to help clean up. he will join volunteers. members from orchard supply hardware will help repair damaged areas with $30,000 worth of donated items and materials. the cleanup is from 9:00 this morning until 2:00 this afternoon. the recent rains caused a sary situation in a south bay neighborhood. a gas leak forced people to leave their homes on sun crest avenue north of allen rock park. katie mar zul la tells us it took pg&e crews ten hours to finish the repair work. >> reporter: it was well after dark when pg&e crews finished repairing a gas leak in san jose. diane was home when the leak happened. it was around 11:00 a.m. >> the land lord saw some -- the earth come up. like it was blowing. like, kind of like a volcano would erupt. >> reporter: diane called 911. >> i saw the vapors from the gas. there was a very strong gas smell. >> reporter: the fire department evacuated some homes and had other residents shelter in place while pg&e shut off the gas. despite several days of sunshine, the cause of the leak was rain. >> because the soil is still saturated in some locations, you can't get incidents like this where underground facilities are compromised and they can result in a gas leak. >> reporter: a four-inch steel pipeline came apart where it was welded together. 20 customers were without gas for most of the day and night. diane wasn't especially inconvenienced by that, but she is worried about long-term pipeline safety. >> there is a concern with san bruno. that would be my main concern. >> reporter: this neighborhood had a gas leak a year ago. abc 7 news. the next round of at martin luther king jr. civic center parking at 2:00 p.m. jonathan bloom has a review. >> regardless of your political affiliation, defend your liberty and your rights. march with us on berkeley. >> reporter: a video and facebook page for a protest organized by this man. he's listed as the bay area contact on the national website for the march for trump. but he didn't plan it that way. >> i'm not actually a trump supporter. >> reporter: what he does support is free speech. a right he believes was violated when a lecture by a breitbart speaker. >> after the milo event, seeing people i know get attacked, and having their rights shut down, i knew something had to happen. >> reporter: the college republican brought breitbart to campus. >> we're actually advising them not to go because it might trump rally, that starts at noon at martin luther king jr. civic center park in berkeley. matt barnes back on the warriors team for the second time had his court date pushed back until june. the coach believes barnes will be playing in the nba finals. he's facing assault charges while he was playing for the sacramento kings. police say he was involved in an altercation at a bar in manhattan back in 14 inches above 3,000 feet. winds gusting over 30 miles an hur there. the window to go is shrinking, because we'll see 1 to 2 feet above 4,000 feet and up to three feet over the highest passes. the winds will gust over 60 and p 0 miles an hour with monday afternoon totals over a foot. tahoe city, south lake about 19 inches. it always looks like this on mount tam. we are looking on showers around over our highest peaks. we're talking about 2,000 feet. could be a sight to see tomorrow with a possibility of a thunderstorm. upper 50s to low 60s. down about 10 degrees from yesterday's readings. wait until you see tomorrow, we'll be struggling to make it into the 50s. here's the storm impact scale. 1 for today and tomorrow, with light amounts. but just enough to really mess up your weekend >> reporter: a trip she may never take. her planned vacation with her husband of 64 years had to be canceled on doctor's orders. a recent stroke and pain in her leg made the risk of sustaining a blood clot mid-flight too dangerous. it was a huge disappointment. >> well, i was hoping it would be some -- so romantic. >> reporter: the couple booked their trip last june for november. they purchased the travel insurance and expected a full refund. but when they canceled, they learned part of their refund would come from the travel agency which came right away. the rest from tripmate, their travel insurer. >> they sent me some forms to fill out. i filled them out and returned them. nothing happened. >> reporter: tripmate asked for more. >> they asked for a doctor's note, stating the reason why in effect, why we canceled. >> reporter: he submitted that note. but the claim was denied. jack eventually took his wife's advice and contacted "7 on your side." he says, that's when things really started rolling. tripmate told us, tripmate subsequently received additional documentation, not originally on file, stating a different reason for cancellation that was covered under the plan. tripmate is glad that we were able to resolve the claim, and mr. and mrs. trina's favor. is the travel insurance worth the added expense? "celebrity apprentice" premiered in january to a 27% drop in ratings that prompted president trump to call it a ratings disaster. even said he would pray for arnold and better ratings. that has caused a brief twitter battle this morning. earlier today president trump tweeted this response. arnold schwarzenegger isn't voluntarily leaving the "apprentice," he was fired by his bad pathetic ratings, not by me. sad end to a great show. a short sometime later, schwarzenegger tweeted back at the president, you should think about hiring a new joke writer and fact checker. a butte county man wants nuggets embedded in that bedrock. >> reporter: digger bob has been prospecting for gold for 20 years. he's certain that the erosion caused by the damaged oroville spillway is presenting a golden is full of gold. >> according to the reporter, the officials are unaware of any gold found there but setting protocol in the future. new details in the long-awaited new b.a.r.t. train cars. according to the east bay "times," b.a.r.t. hopes to run test cars on tracks without passengers as early as this month. once that's done, the cars will have to be tested for another four months for performance monitoring. b.a.r.t. cut the number of expected trains to debut to 35, down from the original 60 planned. the agency hoped to roll out 230 cars by the end of next year. but now the revised number is 166. a new meaning to the california role to state lawmakers, including one from san francisco, introducing a bill to let bicyclists yield at stop signs if it is safe. lawmakers say this would make the roads safer because the longer it takes a biker to pass through an intersection, a greater chance an oncoming car will hit them. if the bill is passed, bikers they say will ignore stop signs because it will give them the discretion to determine what is safe. happening today, if you're looking for a job, san jose giants want to hear from you. they're hosting the annual job fair. the first 75 people who walk up are guaranteed an interview. they are looking for candidates for marketing, sales, even a mascot. the fair runs from 10:00 this morning until 12:30 at the stadium on alma avenue. the south. already looking at some showers. and still that flood warning around lakeport. the lake is about 9.6 feet. it will recede to about 9.5. they have snow coming in. in fact, this is a winter storm warning for cobb mountain, around middleton. we're looking at this right on through monday. accumulating snow there. in the sierra nevada, from 4:00 this afternoon to 4:00 monday, this is a big snowmaker here with anywhere from 1 to 3 feet of snow up into the highest elevations. and winds could gust to near 100 miles an hour at the highest elevations around the ski resorts. from a foot to a foot and a half from south lake to kirkwood, and the timing on this doesn't bode well to come home on sunday. in fact, that's when things get really dicey. you can see the clouds lowering here, a pretty picture, though, from emoryville. 52 in the city. 50 san jose. 48 in gilroy. it's been showery here at sfo. you can see the drops on the lens from 44 with fog in santa rosa and napa. livermore at 50 degrees. for mount tam, it's pretty wet here. so the cold storm is arriving later on today. but already some showers around. and snow over those highest peaks locally tonight into tomorrow. and little misty thinking about the old steel bridge. constructed back in the 1930s, which started coming down in 2013. >> i grew up here. so it's something i always remember. but i like the new bridge,
