really nice day in the upper 60s. we'll be well above average with 45 in novato, still cool in the north bay. from our east bay hills camera, we've got plenty of sunshine. more mid-70s around the bay today. we've got a cooldown and some areas could see some rain in the next few days. i'll pinpoint that for you coming up. in developing news a double shooting in san jose has left one person dead this morning. police tell us it was just after 2:00 when officers responded to a report of a shooting on oak street. when they arrived they found two victims in front of a home. each had at least one gunshot wound. they were taken to the hospital where one of the victims died. the other is expected to survive. police are still searching for suspects and a motive. also developing out of san jose this morning, an escaped inmate serving time for child molestation and whom police label as a dangerous man continues to be the focus of a manhunt. officers say there's evidence from a burglary at an apartment building that the inmate was there and that he may have switched his clothing. katie marzullo reports. >> reporter: police cars by the dozen, canine units on the ground helicopters overhead. the areas near macarthur,moore park. look at this man johnell carter 5'11", twob220 and has the name "alice" tattooed on his neck. just before 1:30 he escaped the custody of a sheriff's deputy during a retuneoutine exam at valley medical center. >> if you see him call 911 immediately. >> reporter: people in the area are on alert. >> we have a dog and she's a pit bull, so nobody is coming near us. we're safe here. but as far as the rest of the neighborhood, you know i'm sure everybody will have one eye open. >> reporter: -- it's kind of interesting to see everything happen. >> reporter: the search was called off just before 6:00 but reignited with the burglary at the apartments. the sheriff's department is contacting carter's family and checking phone records. >> we'll go back and do investigation work seeing if it was a planned escape. >> reporter: katie marzullo abc 7 news. this morning hayward police are on the lookout for a man who allegedly tried to abduct a teenage girl. police have released a sketch of the suspect. the attempted kidnapping happened around 4:00 yesterday afternoon near whitman and sycamore. the 15-year-old was walking home from school when a man in his 20s tried to pull her into his car. she fought him off and escaped. police are looking for a newerer model honda civic with paper plates. people at two libraries in berkeley may have been exposed to the measles. an adult who may have had the contagious virus visited the west branch library on february 27th and 28th as well as the central branch library on the 27th. the risk for exposure is not strong. however, health officials say anyone who visited the libraries on those dates should monitor themselves for symptoms from the next two weeks. symptoms include a fever and rash. statewide there have been 132 measles cases since the outbreak began. oakland police will no longer track dozens of gang members through a 100-block city zone. yesterday the city attorney dismissed injunctions against two gangs being tracked. she said the police chief will focus on other gang prevention programs given the limited resources of the city attorney's office. the enforcement started in 2010 to stop 15 members of a gang from associating with other gang members. it was expanded in 2012 to include 40 more members of another gang. the time right now is 8:04. lisa told you about the bay area's warm weather this weekend and so many people are excited to get outside. however, as abc 7 news reporter alyssa harrington reports, emergency workers want to remind people that trails and beaches can still be treacherous. >> it's crazy. you usually don't get to come until like july. >> reporter: the crowd at san francisco's beach looked more like what you might see in late spring or summer. people watching the sunset on blankets. kids playing in the water. >> i'm in a t-shirt and i'm perfectly warm. >> it's actually been pretty great today. >> reporter: ricky jacobs took advantage of the warm winter day with her 6-year-old sun aiden. >> it's super fun. i got my toes wet. >> reporter: parts of the bay area could see highs in the 70s this weekend. with so many expected to spend the nice days outside, emergency crews are prepared. they say the teenager who tumbled down a cliff at lands end. the 17-year-old was taking pictures at dead man's point when he slipped and fell at least 200 feet. remarkably his injuries are not serious. >> he will be okay. unfortunately he was walking out there and had on flip-flops so he lost those. we were able to rescue him and walk him back up the cliff, but i'm sure his feet will need a little soaking. >> reporter: firefighters say park trails are especially treacherous because of the drought. they're dry and there's little to hold on to. in san francisco alyssa harrington abc 7 news. certainly a good reminder to always be aware of your surroundings. >> yes, certainly. it is so parched out there. we will not help in that department for the officers dragging a student at freemont high school. that's disturbing enough but it's really what happened off camera that outraged the police chief. laura anthony has the story you'll see only on 7. >> we shouldn't be putting our hands on the student. there's no reason to put our hands on the students. >> reporter: it happened on january 22nd 2014. a 15-year-old freshman had been called to the office at fremont high for a meeting with an administrator as shown on this office security video. the student stands there for a few moments before he's approached by two school security officers who apparently want him to move. >> you're going to see a security officer right here in the jacket come up and talk to him. the report states that he's asking him to leave the threshold of the door. >> reporter: the events are described by oakland school's new police chief. >> he'll push him into this officer. the officer will turn around, put his arm around his neck, put him in this hold. >> reporter: he is quite troubled not only by the officers' use of force but that the video sat in a file for 14 months. last may this video surfaced showing another school security officer punching a student in a wheelchair at oakland high. mitchell was hired and goes on trial next month for felony assault and child abuse. in this case the attorney for the 15-year-old is considering a civil lawsuit. ronald cruz told abc 7 news, quote, there was no reason for the security guards to engage with the stuntddent at all, let alone man handle and choke him. they have no business working around children and should be fired. the two security officers are on paid leave picked the outcome of an intensive investigation and dozens of prior cases will be reviewed. >> every investigation has been conducted by the department in the last five years. >> reporter: he'll also propose he eequipquip all of his officers with body cameras. a plainclothes chp officer who pulled his gun on protesters in oakland last year has been cleared of any wrongdoing. a picture from the san francisco chronicle shows the officer point a gun at the camera near lake merritt on december 10th. yesterday the chp said the officer acted within policy saying his partner was being attacked by protesters so he pulled his firearm. the chief engineer of the new eastern span of the bay bridge insists the bridge is safe despite cracks in the anchor rods. the chronicle reports brian maroney told state officials the structure would barely move in a major earthquake even if all the rods that secured it were missing. independent experts say the bridge would be vulnerable. new details and images in that close call for harrison ford. the movie action hero bloodied after a real-life misadventure in real life. his wife visiting her husband at the hospital in los angeles. abc news reporter nick watt has the very latest. >> reporter: the moments after impact harrison ford dragged from the wreckage, treated on the fairway. a dashing hero in the movies, and now perhaps in real life. >> he had these fairways in front of him, and he did his best to keep the airplane flying. didn't stall it out. it looks like he did a really good job under the circumstances. >> nice landing. >> thanks. >> reporter: santa monica airport sits amid densely packed homes and busy roads. >> there have been aircraft that have crashed out of santa monica into homes before so aiming for the golf course is the only open space out here pretty much, aside from the beach. >> andrew filmed ford's desperate descent from the street. >> the engine was at full throttle and then it started to spurt and kick out. >> reporter: ford radioed the tower. >> you've got to pick the best spot and this apparently was the best spot. >> reporter: a spine surgeon was playing the 7th hole. >> he was awake. he was trapped. stabilized his neck. >> reporter: he and other golfers managed to pry ford from the wreckage before paramedics showed up. >> it was obvious by his face it was harrison ford. >> reporter: he remains in the hospital, his shaken wife snaps after the visit. a leading man in hollywood for nearly 40 years folder has said that flying gives him an identity other than harrison ford the actor. >> get off my plane! >> reporter: he's right. he's now harrison ford, the survivor. schools in california will begin administering the common core exam next week. last year schools had a practice run, but now it counts. while school districts say the new curriculum is preparing students to be critical thinkers, some are having a tough time adjusting. lyanne melendez explains. >> reporter: many of us learned that for the most part school work must be memorized. that's true to a certain extent. but as part of the common core curriculum, students are being asked to thoroughly understand concepts. >> and, most importantly, be able to demonstrate that they know what they can do. >> reporter: san francisco school district officials sat down to work on examples. in this math question, a student is asked if all the figures on the computer are parallelograms. in the past the answer would have been yes or no. now the student must explain his or her answer. getting here hasn't been easy. teachers have been retrained in the common core curriculum. >> a lot of the math problems you might not know so in class they'll teach you ways to do it. >> reporter: but in some schools the use of computers is limited and not every child has one at home. >> writing on computers is difficult for me because i'm new at typing and writing on paper, it's like normal for me. >> reporter: still, next week students in california will begin taking the common core exam. unlike the old s.t.a.r. program which took several days of testing, a school will now have from march 10th until the edged of may to conduct its testing. >> the window is pretty long, like six to eight weeks. >> reporter: because it's so spread out, san francisco unified will be able to assign one computer to ten students. >> it is a different way of teaching. it is a different way of learning. but it is, i think a better preparation for our children for the 21st century. >> reporter: in san francisco, lyanne melendez, abc 7 news. the oakland a's are rolling out their annual welcome mat for the city's little leaguers. up to 1400 oakland youth are expected to be on hand. they'll march in parades around the coliseum field, eat lunch and play in the a's sponsored fun zone. these are scenes from a previous year's event. oakland has one of the largest little leagues in the bay area but just 3% of kids play baseball, something the a's are trying to help change. little leaguers in the east bay will play their first full schedule of games today. 15 little league fields are on the property in martinez. they were closed because union workers at the refoininery are on strike. they reached an agreement the workers would not picket at the field. 600 players on 49 teams have been forced to share three fields because of the strike. getting out on the baseball diamond or just outside period is a great chance to get away from technology because this is the national day of unplugging. the san francisco rec and park department is sponsoring a get out and play day, so you can get away from social media. this is the sixth year of unplugging. it's a growing movement designed to log off and power down for 24 hours. all you have to do is simply put your device down cell phone, ipad, whatever it is walk away from it slowly. see if you can go a full day without having to scratch that itch to log on. i tried doing it last year didn't work for me. >> isn't that sad? >> you know we're so connected to it these days, and there are times i'm like, oh, i wish i didn't have to check the phone but you get behind on things. >> exactly. well, a nice day to just hang out outside and disconnect for sure. if you haven't enjoyed our weather during the week there's more mild afternoon highs for the weekend. probably not what everyone wants to hear because our rainy season has been so abysmal and it continues with the dry above average readings. we're looking at 60s in the sierra nevada. live doppler 7 hd is very quiet. talk about quiet nobody is there in santa cruz. it's been in the mid-70s. more sunshine more mild spring-like temperatures to come for the entire bay area for the weekend. 54 in san francisco it's 52 in san carlos and oakland gilroy lagging behind, you were in the 30s in morning. half moon bay is 7 degrees cooler than it was yesterday. and in san jose you've had plenty of mid-70s and we'll see about the same today. 42 in santa rosa. north bay numbers are chilly. the fog has disappeared. out by the delta it's 52. livermore is checking in at 47. from our exploratorium camera it should be a nice day downtown. clear and cool this morning mild to moderate over the weekend. we look for cloudy skies for some and cooler conditions mid-week. still looking at the possibility of maybe a few raindrops. the forecast models are not agreeing and they're scaling back on what we thought would be rain come tuesday and wednesday. so here's our close-up computer animation that shows the low clouds and fog cozying up to the coast from point reyes to san mateo tonight. that will lead to some cooler numbers tomorrow afternoon from ocean beach, half moon bay, point reyes. you can see some of the fog inland but we'll be above normal. by monday the changes will come. we'll have to wait until tuesday for the ridge to weaken. it's a ridge to the west and that amounts to unseasonably mild conditions. even though we'll get a few locations cooling off due to a wind shift most of you won't notice a thing. it will be tuesday when the ridge begins to weaken and then we'll begin to track this system. see if it's got any energy left to it. this is the model that paints a wetter picture for wednesday but we're not all believing that. so beyond that it's looking try and we'll have to wait for the next day or so to see if those forecast models come into play and agree on the rain. upper 60s for san francisco, very little change even with some morning fog. but here comes that front. it will cool us off come tuesday and wednesday only to warm us up once it moves away. in san jose, look at all the 70s. with the cooler numbers come wednesday, we're bouncing right back after that. highs today ranging from 73 in san mateo and oakland, 75 for morgan hill, 76 in napa santa rosa, 75 in concord, antioch and livermore. the accuweather seven-day forecast so don't forget to set your clocks ahead. tomorrow waking up to a later sunrise and a later sunset. we'll look for really temperatures to be similar except at the coast. tuesday will be the cooler day pretty much for everyone by a few degrees. maybe some showers on wednesday. you can see what's showing up on live doppler 7 hd any time with that rich legacy is being remembered. the bay area blues society unveiled these plaques along 7th street in front of the west oakland b.a.r.t. station. they honor musical artists like aretha franklin john lee hooker and ray charles. all of them played at clubs that lined seventh street until the 1980s. >> it's a legacy you know what i mean? you can leave something for your kids and your grandchildren. to know that your daddy contributed something. just glad they're making some kind of acknowledgement about what was then and is still going to be preserved. >> the bay area blues society raised $8 million for the walk of fame. another 120 artists will be honored with plaques. while many parts of the u.s. are dealing with frigid temperatures not everyone is having a bad time with this winter weather. check out ya-ya, the giant panda at the memphis zoo. one of the zoo keepers caught her enjoying the snow. she has her toys out and is rolling around in the soft stuff. the keeper also caught the zoo's polar bear payson having fun. he just stretches out literally, finding the perfect spot to chill. the time now is 8:26. still to come president obama is visiting selma, and three...it's gluten free. chex. full of what you love. free of what you don't. have you tried gluten free chex oatmeal and new chex granola mix? two more delicious reasons to love chex. it's saturday, march 7th. glad to have you with us i'm chris nguyen. we're starting with a quick look at the forecast. here's meteorologist lisa argen tracking live doppler 7 hd. a beautiful scene behind you in santa cruz lisa. >> that's right. it's been in the 70s all week long ajd we're looking at looer another day today with above average temperatures. 54 in san francisco 51 in san jose, half moon bay is cooler this morning and here's a look at san jose where it's clear. 50 in concord 42 in santa rosa. so here's the plan throughout the day today. it will be sunny. low clouds and fog will slowly creep back to the shoreline throughout the evening hours. that will cool us off a bit for the second half of your weekend. we'll talk more about above average temperatures from that cooldown and that's coming up in a few minutes. chris. new this morning president obama says every girl deserves an education. in his weekly address the president referred to the initiative he and first lady michelle launched on tuesday called let girls learn. its goal is to help more girls around the world go to school and stay in school. the president believes educated girls make the world a safer place. >> when girls are educated their future children are better nourished. national growth gets a boost too and places where women and girls are treated as full and equal citizens tend to be more stable and more democratic. >> the president added that there are 62 million girls around the world who should be in school and aren't playing barriers that stand in the way of people wanting to learn. today our nation celebrates a turning point in the civil rights movement. it's the 50th anniversary of bloody sunday when people attacked hundreds of paegseaceful activists during a civil rights march in selma, alabama. we'll taking a live look right now in selma where president obama will be speaking. abc is there with what we can expect to see and here. >> reporter: this morning the picture many in selma would like the world to remember, black and white families arm in arm, symbolically marching across the bridge. >> there's a lot of unfinished business. we're all united. >> reporter: but these are the pictures from the same bridge 50 years ago that have defined this city. more than 80 demonstrators fighting for voting rights were beat down by alabama police. president obama who's visiting today, spoke about the civil rights effort friday. >> selma is now. selma is about the courage of ordinary people doing extraordinary things because they believe they can change the country. that they can shape our nation's destiny. >> reporter: there's a scene in the movie "selma" that illustrates the old injustice. oprah winfrey, who also produced the film plays annie lee cooper, her voter registration rejected over and over again. >> how many county judges in alabama? >> 67. >> name them. >> reporter: comparisons to current day struggles with police profiling and the shooting death of michael brown in ferguson led to this oscar-winning song from the movie. ♪ glory glory ♪ ♪ oh ♪ >> reporter: but in selma today, many are still searching for glory. nearly a third of the city lives in poverty and workers in the auto industry here complain they're paid fast food wages. this is still very much a celebration happening here. actors singers here in montgomery day. >> the march in selma will also be commemorated in san francisco today. at noon members of the stop incarceration network of the bay area will work across the golden gate bridge to mark the 50th anniversary of the historic bloody sunday march. the walk begins on the san francisco side of the bridge. 8:33 is our time. thousands of people poured into the bay area this week for the annual video game developers conference. but chances are your school-age kids probably have only one game on their minds, mine craft. it's a global phenomenon. as jonathan bloom shows us it's now being used to inspire the inventors and game developers of tomorrow. >> reporter: what could possibly have all these kids so anxiously staring at one screen? maybe you've heard of it it's a game called mine kraft. >> what is this mine craft thing? >> i don't know if we can explain it. >> mine kraft is just very addicting. you can do whatever you want. you can build massive structures. pretty much you just let your mind create. >> reporter: a virtual world that's been taking the real world by storm. mark collided with it while developing a kit to teach electronics. >> we were testing our kits all over the world and kids were always asking us, can we play mine kraft on this? >> reporter: well now you can. this $150 kit is called piper. kids build a machine that plays mine kraft and has to build new parts for it to create each level. they build the buttons and switches first. >> it gets you really excited when you put all the parts together and when you're done and it's going to load. >> reporter: mark wanted to teach kids the gadgets they know and love aren't that 50 cal after all. >> it's good you can take apart, put together and it's something that you can do yourself right now. that's a very empowering thought. >> piper's creators were hoping to find a more productive way but it might have found a home in the classroom. >> the first thing i saw was absolute engagement. i saw kids who turned toward this box and were engaged. >> reporter: piper could become part of a class where they teach kids to code. >> it's really a platform to get a lot of kids excited in engineering that wouldn't be otherwise. >> reporter: a junior at harvard, has dreams of building a college version of piper some day. first they have to fund this one. they're raising money on kickstarter through april 3rd. jonathan bloom, abc 7 news. lots of people turned out yesterday hoping to adopt one of the puppies abandoned in san rafael. a man says he found nine puppies in a box next to a dumpster on tuesday. he brought the rottweiler and labrador mix puppies to the marin humane society. yesterday two of the dogs went up for adoption and there was a line out the door. >> fill out the application and was granted and i got this little guy and he's so cute. >> we hope that if people weren't able to get one of the nine, that they'll consider adopteding maybe an older dog. >> the rest of the puppies are expected to be available next week. for more information go to our website, abc7news.com. the long labor dispute at ports along the west coast may be over but some say you'd never know it. cornell bernard has more now on how many bay area companies are still suffering. >> reporter: and the goal is to get cargo to customers as quickly as we can. it's a game of cargo catchup where work on the docks is getting back to normal or trying to. longshoremen working nights and weekends. right now what you have are ships, containers and the truck trailers that carry the containers all in places we don't want them. we need to get them back into the container yards ships back on schedule. >> the frustrations are hard to describe. >> reporter: dave weber is tired of waiting. his company distributes imported coffee beans throughout the bay area, but lately there's been few cargo shipments arriving. >> are you back to normal yet? >> no. no, no we're not close to being back to normal. i anticipate that will take safely six to eight weeks. >> reporter: the work slowdown at west coast ports ended last month, but this warehouse is still only half full of coffee beans. some workers have been laid off as a result. >> how are things at the port of oakland? >> slow. >> reporter: trucker bill abuti is feeling pressure to pick up cargo fast but can't. we found lots of trucks at the port spending the whole day just waiting for the log jam to end. >> typically for a trucker to do a transaction at the marine terminal, it should take 45 minutes from the time that he arrives until he leaves. >> how long is it taking now?
