boom. kate larson, abc 7 news. dozens of protesters took to the streets today in venice beach where snap is headquartered, they're unhappy the company has taken a lot of retail spaces in the area. >> people come to see street performers and artists. if this keeps up, venice beach is going to see a bunch of private offices. with security guards who treat people like they shouldn't be there. >> snap responded with no one could have anticipated how quickly we've grown, and we have already gun focusing our future growth outside of venice. >> amazon is explaining what led to the big internet out average last week. a swoorker hit the wrong key. amazon writes, unfortunately, one of the inputs to the command was entered incorrectly, and a larger set of servers was removed than intended. amazon's cloud base and web services went down on the east coast for more than four hours tuesday. the system hosts a half a million websites, including netflix, air b & b or spotify. when it goes down, it causes major issues down stream. >> a heroic rescue in san jose. witnesses say a distraught man jumped into the water at pier 23, when it appeared he was going under. two good samaritans, one a former lifeguard jumped into action. >> he's paddling trying to keep his weight up. his energy gave up, and that's when it was time to make some moves. >> once we put our hands on him, he calmed down, and he was fine. not in hysterics any more. >> paramedics checked out the man at the scene and took him to the hospital. new at 6:00, police arrested this man for trying to steal an ice cream truck in fairfield. tony antoine walker jumped on the truck and tried to drive off. but crashed and took off on foot. he tried to carjack three other vehicles before officers detained him. >> firefighters knocked down a big fire that burned a vallejo home this afternoon in less than 30 minutes. sky 7 flew over the scene a few hours ago. no one needed to be rescued from inside the home. >> a top administrator in a south bay center has been arrested for possessing child porn. in the '70s, he volunteered as the sunnyvale boy scout troop. the agency says, lang has been suspended from his post pending further investigations. the center is koomting with authorities. teachers in san jose are on the lookout for signs among children of stress and trauma from the coyote creek flood. the city revealed that nearly all homes have been cleared for people to return to. mud and debris cleanup continues. tomorrow the city expects to have a better picture of what they estimate is $73 million in damage. one of the hardest hit neighborhoods is called rock springs. david louie joins us live with many of the children from that neighborhood go to class. david? >>. >> because of the flooding, some of the students at this school are going to see disruption lasting weeks if not months. many of them are living in a shelter. learning must continue. and their teachers are going to take a close look at their learning process. >> we can't expect students to learn if their basic needs, safety are not met. >> the superintendent of the franklin mckinley school district has teachers watching schools closely, one in ten of them has been displaced or impacted by the coyote creek flood. they're looking for coping and stress issues, which can lead to inattentiveness, combativeness or lashing out at teachers. >> it's not just the children that were affected that we're monitoring, the entire school. so teachers are checking with all their students in their classroom to make sure that they're ready to learn. >> 8-year-old ester gomez sees a sadness around her. one of her classmates is a flood victim. >> we're sad her house got flooded. she's a nice kid in class. and -- >> is she feeling better now? >> i think she is, pretty sure she is. >> ester is giving up recess today, to help fold the many donated clothes volunteers have collected for families. it's an act of kindness that helps to lift spirits. the school has raised $32,000 on a go fund me page. >> they came to school with what they had on when they left their home when this thing devastated their home. luckily, because of what we have here, they're able to get back somewhat of what they've lost. >> in san jose, david louie, abc 7 news. knorr salman will stay in jail, this is after a judge in florida just hours ago agreed with a prosecution request to keep her behind bars. she'll stay there while the judge decides if she should remain in custody until her trial. she's charged with helping her husband scout out possible targets was scheduled for release tomorrow. yesterday the judge in oakland said it was debatable whether the prosecution has enough evidence to convict her. an accident on 880. no one was hurt. leslie brinkley is live from oakland with more on the story. >> a $10,000 reward was offered for any information leading to whoever fired upon this offduty oakland officer overnight. by afternoon, there were a couple arrests, this has only rkindled worries about gunfire on freeways. >> there are three arrests, two associated with this particular shooting, one unrelated. i'm very grateful that our officer is okay. >> at 11:40 wednesday night, an offduty oakland police officer was fired at on southbound 880 at 16th avenue, his car was struck. but he was not injured. police tried to make a traffic stop, but the suspect vehicle escaped into an east oakland neighborhood. here are the tire tracks from where the car was abandoned in this yard. it was just last saturday night that a 28-year-old man was gunned down and killed on highway 4 in antioch. last year there were dozens of freeway shootings throughout the east bay, chp is already investigating 9 more incidents in 2017. >> it's difficult for you to investigate these freeway shootings? >> yes. >> because of the size and scope and cars that are out there, the fact that everything's in place, as far as cars are moving. >> san pablo police just activated three new freeway cameras as a supplement to their city surveillance. >> we had two shootings on the freeway, there was a lack of witnesses and a lack of witnesses that were able to recall accurately what had happened. >> pittsburg put up 14 freeway cameras to catch crime in progress. a vast network of wireless cameras all along i-80 and highway 4, a hotbed they say of gang violence. the cameras would be triggered by shot spotters to turn in the direction of gunfire. i'm lesley brinkley, abc 7 news. the price gouging of tourists on the golden gate bridge, the serious she was brought to the united states as a child, and has remained here undocumented. >> like thousands of undocumented students in california, she's entitled to apply for the dream act. meaning state financial aid for college. >> irene thely applied for the dream act. i knew about the deadline, made sure to get it in right away. >> the deadline is tonight at midnight, in california, there are fewer applicants than last year, when 34,000 applications were received. dreamers are afraid any information will be shared with other government agencies, including ice. >> they fear they'll use this information against them, and they'll be knocking down their doors. >> they ensure them their information is confidential. >> if you don't apply, you won't be able to attend school. even though under trump's administration, i feel like people still shouldn't be afraid to apply. >> city college of san francisco sent out reminders to current students about tonight's deadline. >> we have a task force to support undocumented students on campus, so we're very proactive in trying to let students know if they're undocumented they're absolutely welcome here at city college of san francisco. >> san francisco unified has reached out to dreamers in the district to make sure they have applied. otherwise, they'll have to wait until next year. >> in san francisco, leann melendez, abc 7 news. chevrolet is going to offer unlimited data through its onstar program. drivers can turn their cars into hotspots. data usage increased 200% from 2015 to 2016. unlimited data costs $20 per month. gas prices have been going up lately, and they're about to rise even more. >> california statewide average is just under $3 per gallon, that's according to aaa, that's an increase of 10 cents in the past month, and more than 50 cents in the past year. gas prices are expected to rise soon. here's a look at the current prices across the bay area. san francisco as usual has the highest cost for gas at $3.09 per gallon. drivers can save a few more pennies in the east bay, even less in vallejo and santa cruz, where it's $2.85 per gallon right now. without fast track, it costs 7.50 to cross the golden gate bridge. some drivers in hertz rental cars have paid much more than that. now the city attorney is suing hertz over fees that have cost unsuspecting tourists millions of dollars over the last few years. >> no doubt the golden gate bridge is iconic, it's likely anyone visiting the bay area who rents a car would drive over the bridge during their visit. they can't pay cash at the toll. one rental car company in particular is taking advantage of that, and needs to stop. this couple began their journey right here on the air train. >> they keep calling it the golden state bridge, it's the golden gate bridge. >> matthew goldberg says what rental car company hertz corporation is doing to unsuspecting tourists is no laughing mat ter. >> we believe has been defrauding their consumers of millions of dollars in fees over the past four years. >> any hertz customer who doesn't pay their toll within 48 hours of crossing the bridge will be charged more. >> it's kind of all fine print. >> including that service fees can run nearly $25. >> if i didn't ask you, how would i have known? you wouldn't have. >> the hertsz employee said customers who don't ask up front will find the pamphlet from their mom when they weren't even two weeks old. they're on the road to happy and healthy lives. they heard crying noises last week, they dug under a school building and found puppies. three were taken to the spca fo this video. a female dog that had recently given birth had been found and taken to a different shelter. the puppies are being nursed back to health. >> could that be sweeter? >> a gaggle of geese is causing problems in the east bay. they attacked a man taking a walk. abc 7 news was in walnut creek taking a gander at the geese. it was here yesterday that a.j. was taking a walk, he says three geese began to attack him. a.j. ran but fell and hurt his leg. he thinks the geese are vicious. >> well, they have to get rid of the geese, there's no question, is it going to injure a child? there are a lot of children in that park, i think it's inevitable a child will be injured. >> who would be liable if such an injury happens. >> we talked with a city spokesperson who told us, one day after the washington post reported sessions met with the russian ambassador twice during last year's election, the attorney general announced this afternoon, he is recusing himself as you heard, from any investigations involving the election and russia. during his confirmation hearing in january, sessions said underoath, no such meeting took place. he tried to collar phi those comments today. >> let me be clear. i never had meetings with russian operatives or russian intermediaries about the trump campaign. >> sessions says he does not believe he discussed political matters with the russian ambassad ambassador. >> strong reaction today from california politicians. >> kristen sze has a sampling of opinions from top leaders of both parties. >> the attorney general is recusing himself from the trump campaign probe involving russian contacts. democrats aren't buying it. nancy pelosi tweets, we are far past recusal, jeff sessions lied under oath, anything less than resignation or removal from office is unacceptable. >> southern california congressman ted lieu is calling for two prosecutors. >> you don't really forget about a meeting with the russian ambassador, most republicans are quiet, but darrell issa tweets, news overnight affirms what i've been saying, we need an independent review, and jeff sessions should recuse himself. camel la harris is urging an online petition urging for jeff sessions resignation. california's attorney general will open an office in washington, d.c.. javier says it's because of expected battles with the trump administration a former lettive affairs director for the obama administration will run the office. some say he should focus on the state and they're concerned about how it may look to taxpayers. his press office hasn't said how much the office will cost. a pioneer of the civil rights movement, spoke to students and staff in the san ramon student school district today. this comes to hateful graffiti scrambled on a few of the high school campuses. >> make sure your armor is on. >> terence roberts is one of the little rock 9. one of the first black students to attend central high school in arkansas, following the brown versus board of education supreme court decision. his first day of school, he was met by an angry mob and the national guard. >> the ma main thing was opposition to our presence. every day we knew we would have to push our way in, and force our way into situations that we were constantly being shoved out of. >> roberts is now an activist. he spoke to students and staff from the san ramon valley school district. he focused on his experience during the civil rights movement, and how to fight for equality today. >> there will be many battles to fight. choose the hill you will die on. >> i liked what he was saying about having us sit down at a roundtable and talk. >> she hopes his story encourages dialogue among her peers. in the fall, racist graffiti was found at monte vista and cal high school. >> people talking about coming from ghettos or mentioning comments about my hair or my friend's hair, little things that are quips, but they still hurt. >> rick schmidt invited roberts here in part because of the graffiti. >> we have work to do, and today was another example of our dedication to doing that. >> he believes roberts powerful message of overcoming hate and finding strength within is what students need to hear. alyssa harrington, abc 7 news. stanford health care's first facility in the east bay will open in two weeks. this is video of what the new outpatient center in emeriville looks like the two story building includes specialty care and x-ray care. it's located on hollis street. the building opens on march 16th. >> here's a great headline. california's statewide drought is nearly over. the latest map from the u.s. drought monitor shows nearly three quarters of the state is no longer in a drought. right now only sections of santa barbara, ventura and imperial counties remain in severe drought. that's the third of five levels of drought. compare that to this time last year. most of the state was in severe drought, with all that red and dark red being exceptional drought. that's the worst possible stage, so we've seen tremendous improvement. >> the fire rings at ocean beach have gotten a makeover. they showed off rape crisis? battered women? >> the roma i knew years ago, wouldn't be deterred by a crisis. >> we were involved in the formation of the women's building. >> they've been part of the women's movement their entire adult lives. >> women need a room of their own in their own community. >> when the women's building opened, it was the first of its kind, roma and dion provided women a safe place away from violence, and gave them access to health care and mental 4e8th services. now, it's still a building run by women for women. >> but the work -- >> the work we did together -- >> roma and dion met in togo in the early '70s while working for the peace corps. >> dion and are are getting married. >> as you'll see in "when we rise." they went on to build a family. they crossed paths with cleve jones over the years. he's a lifelong political activist. based partially on his life. dustin lance black wanted to hear more from roma and dion. >> lance and others fell in love with our family. they had found some sort of a gold mine to tell a story. it was a good san francisco story. >> that family included many men stricken by aids. >> how has it changed over the last five years. >> well, the numbers have changed. >> abc news has spoken to dion many times over the years. she was one of the first nurses to treat hiv patients at san francisco's general hospital. she was there when they started the aides ward. >> when we opened the ward it was a 12 bed ward that often times wasn't full. >> reporter: she ended up working with mostly men. >> i was assigned to the adult medical service which was ward 5c. and half of the patients on that ward were patients living with aids. >> many of the gay men who died in the wards had been abandoned by their families. women from the women's building, and nurses stepped in to fill the void. >> we're drawn to the care of those patients, for the most part, because we were either lesbians or gay men. >> it's going to take vision for us to step up. >> i'm asking you to dig deep for our brothers. >> reggie akee, abc 7 news. >> you can see more of dion and roma's story tonight at 9:00 right here on abc 7. tune in an hour earlier, to catch a special episode, when we rise, the people behind the story, that starts at 8:00, followed by night three of when we rise. and stay with us for abc 7 news at 11:00. the bay area is a beautiful place. >> matt captured these rolling hills near napa. he says that's mt. st. helens. >> it's a nice shot, isn't it?
