Including sam lacardo of san jose. He came here to meet with mayors around the country to discuss all the issues they deal with at the local level. Crime, education issues, Budgeting Issues and so much more. We had a chance to speak this afternoon on the streets of washington. As a region we can show the country that ideological differences dont mean we have to have divided communities. Would you like to see more of that at the National Level . We certainly would, but i know theres a different dynamic that works inside the beltway, than at home. And frankly, im in local government, i feel very blessed. Mayor ed lee was here as well as a number of other bay area mayors. Many of them will stay and attend the inauguration. Many others were back on a plane. Not attending the inauguration. This city is electric and filled with people who are gathering here to take part in the ceremony that will happen right here behind me at the capital among those in attendance will be a number of protesters who have come from the bay area to make sure their voices are heard. I hear that many of these demonstrators are going to be extremely vocal and disruptive as they possibly can. I met with one protester from the bay area today, heres what he told me. Im dressed like a billionaire, i dont see why anyone who wasnt a billionaire would vote for him. The only people hes going to take care of are people like him. Youre convinced of that . Absolutely. He started off with 14 million. Thats not working hard, thats starting off at the top, you know. I understand from a very reliable source that a number of the bay area protesters have ended up with tickets in their hands that will put them close to the stage. They intend to make their presence felt tomorrow all across this city. There is great excitement and anticipation about what is going to happen tomorrow. There is also enormous security. Something like 100 million spent on security. Protesters will be here enmass. Some like stewart who i met are going to be vocal. Others may be more disruptive than that. All the security is designed to keep people safe at a very exciting time, and a very controversial time for our nation as well. Much more to come here during the hour, but for the moment. In less than an hour, the Oakland Catholic diocese will announce its closing five of its schools. This morning, abc news obtained a confidential letter. Parents are being notified as we speak. The diocese has said that there are five schools closing, but they would not give us the names of those schools. We were able to confirm through parents the names of three of the schools. And what could i say, parents are shocked and heart broken. This parent was handed an unexpected letter this afternoon while picking up his daughter from saint martin in oakland the Oakland Catholic diocese says the school will be closing at the end of the year. Parents were notified as they picked up their children and grandchildren. Its one of the few schools thats affordable. And this is going to be a great loss. They decided to tell parents in a meeting scheduled for this evening. Im surprised because i really like the school. Well get through it somehow some way. Its a great school. In a confidential letter obtained by abc news. The diocese cited the reasons for closing the schools. Low enrollment. The diocese says all options have been exhausted. These five schools charge between 4 and 8,000 a year in tuition, low compared to other private schools. At saint martin deporas, over 95 of children receive some form of financial aide. A man in the Santa Cruz Mountains wont be able to slide into his hot tub tonight. Recent heavy rain eroded the ground. Sending the deck down the hill and his hot tub with it. According to one tree expert i talked to, get ready like you said, for the next 12 punch. Plenty of toppled trees and other problems throughout the east bay. A mudslide took out this fence at highway 24. And runoff from last nights rain is continuing to erode the collapsed roadway here. Peering over the abyss, you can see big chunks of striped asphalt with watt irrushing by. Nearby is a dangerously dangling guardrail. It was a little shocking to see how big it was. And the fact that its grown. It doesnt look good. Repairing it could take a year. They just signed an emergency proclamation as they anticipate the next storm. Well be braced for winds, whenever winds are blowing, especially with saturated soils. Well anticipate potential trees coming down. It was roots up in downtown oakland where a huge tree collapsed overnight at 15th and Martin Luther king, taking down cable lines and absolutely decimating the sidewalk. Crews work to clean it all up. Over at lake merritt, falling branches took out some of the iconic lakeside lights. One homeowner awoke to a tree crashing through his fence. On the right side of your screen, you can see how it just missed a childs swing in the backyard. Next door, the massive acacia toppled a large tree. With widespread gatherings expected over the next two days, local Law Enforcement agencies and the American Civil Liberties union want to make sure people know what is. Our main goal is to facilitate the freedom of speech everybody has. Police say as long as people maintain civility. They should not expect any Law Enforcement action. They will have representatives, monitoring each gathering. We really want to ensure that the rights of the public to express their viewpoints is protected. The aclu will be giving out pocket sized guides about your rights when it comes to Law Enforcement. The aclu recommends having a government issued id on you, to make the process go more smoothly. Also there can be immigration consequences for arrests. Think carefully about that. Snapping photos or taking video of interactions with Law Enforcement is within your rights.
