>> reporter: the vote sent a message. there is strong support from supervisors just as it is. these immigrants say they want to feel comfortable in san francisco. and are worried now, that the city sanctuary law is under scrutiny. following the july shooting death of kate steinle but an illegal immigrant and convicted felon. sheriff mirkarimi ordered his deputies not to communicate with federal immigration officials about the release of the detainees. supervisor mark farrell supports the law but not the sheriff's actions. >> we're coming forward to say that is inappropriate. >> reporter: supervisor david campos says cities are watching san francisco. he offered another nonbinding measure, urging the sheriff not to cooperate with the latest program called pep. >> if you have a federal government trying to get cities like san francisco to become agents of an immigration. >> reporter: the proposed legislations are symbolic, leading this supervisor to criticize them as grandstanding and in a chamber she cautioned against making changes to the sanctuary city policy. >> cannot allow one event to dictate 25 years, 25 years of our city's policy, towards undocumented immigrants in our city. >> reporter: and in the end, the posal was tabled. the resolution passed unanimously. with the sheriff's election in november, a real policy debate may begin. in san francisco, abc7 news. senate democrats in washington, d.c. today blocked legislation to punish so called sanctuary cities that shield residents from authorities. as a consequence, the measure fell short of the 60 required. the move to a final report on the bill. indicate stein le's family went to testify on the bill. today, her brother told abc7 news he's disappointed. the department of education is launching a major campaign to teach undocumented students their rights. deputy education secretary john cane introduced a nationwide forum so they have the right information to support students academically. >> sometimes they're told if you're undocumented you can't go to college. it's untrue. if you're undocumented you won't be able ever to work. not true. >> reporter: san francisco state is going further. the university has hired a dream coordinator to aid undocumented students at the state has seen a 600% increase in the types of students since 2009. repairs in a massive sink hole are almost complete. one lane will reopen at 7:00 in the morning. sky 7 hd shows us what it looks like today. it's all but filled in. right now, workers are paving roads with fresh asphalt. the city says there is more work to do before they're to reopen. congestion relief arrived for carpoolers. there is a 3-mile long hov lane. that lane runs from haggen berger road to marina boulevard, an extension of an existing lane open for drivers with two or more passengers monday through friday, 5:00 to 9:00 a.m. and 3:00 to 7:00 p.m. >> there has been a big change in recommendations for mammograms. why to the everyone is happy with the new age you're advised to get the screening. plus... starting at $1600. >> yikes. call it inflate gate. are the rooms still filling up for super bowl?
