The Santa Clara County sheriff is creating into a special commission to look into how the jail is run after a 31yearold inmate was beaten to death two weeks ago, allegedly by guards who are now facing charges. Reporter the county wants a Blue Ribbon Panel to come into the jail, take a look and see what they can do to make it safer for inmates, especially for those with mental illness. We have learned a substantial number of people in the jail have mental illness. This is an identical block where a 31yearold michael tryee was beaten to death. The cells have wooden doors to provide some privacy. It may have prevented others from witnessing what happened. County officials want to create a Blue Ribbon Commission to look at what improvements can be made in operations to prevent a repeat tragedy. Of that, 40 of the inmate population suffer Mental Health illnesses. Reporter sheriff smith says recruits will get more crisis intervention training, including dealing with the mentally ill. Were adding to that academy that will mean theyll have an additional 40 hours of training so all correctional staff have received some Mental Health training but now were going to be putting in that 40 hour block into the correctional academy. The county is seeking more input from the public. Were asking for the establishment of an anonymous hot line.
