open right now. after an accident involving multiple cars. it happened near the mclaughlin avenue exit just after 2:30 this morning. the chp said one of the cars overturned and another caught on fire. at least one person has died. it is unclear how many other people have been hurt. no word yet on what caused that accident or when the lanes will reopen. more breaking news now out of martinez. investigators are trying to figure out how two cars caught on fire in the driveway of a home. firefighters say flames from the cars spread to part of the home on phyllis terrace before 2:00 this morning. neighbors saw the fire and then heard explosions. crews say exploding tires likely caused loud noises. the residents were home at the time. fortunately, no one was hurt. newark police are look at surveillance video to help with their investigation of that city's first homicide of the year. it happened in broad daylight yesterday. abc 7 news reporter sergio quintana has the details. >> reporter: family of the victim watched as the alameda county coroner removed the body from the dark-colored bmw sedan. they would not talk about the loved one but a neighbor said he may know the victim from a nearby barber shop. >> so you've seen the guy in the car before. >> i haven't seen him in the car but cutting hair over there. >> where does he cut hair? >> right over here. >> reporter: robert sanchez and his mother lauer are you shocked this happened many broad daylight. the victim was spotted at noon shot in the head. detectives ruled out suicide quickly because they did not find a gun in the car. >> the first officer arrived and checked on the person and initially believed that the person may have been drunk and once they checked on the person they realized that the victim had been shot. >> there are businesses with cameras aimed at the shooting. according to our partner on channel 14, police are selected surveillance video with a clear image of a white or silver suv that pulled up next to the bmw and potential suspects. jimmy's friend found the person slumped on the the steering wheel of the bmw. >> the wipers were on and the headlights were on and that is it. >> reporter: the detectives are in the initial stages of thethee investigation. sergio quintana, abc 7 news. the chp is investigating a drive-by shooting on highway 4 in antioch. it happened around 3:00 yesterday afternoon near the lone tree off-ramp where officers shut down the off-ramp for nearly five hours while investigators searched the freeway. no one was hurt. no other details have been released. president trump is responding to reports that syria is launching were planes again from an air base struck by u.s. missiles last week. thursday's attack by the u.s. destroyed up to 20 syrian aircraft. and left the runway mostly in tact. military experts tell abc news the dozens of tomahawk missiles don't have the fire power to take out the runways but in a tweet, president trump disagreed saying you don't hit runways because they are easy to fix. it was a retaliation for the chemical weapons attack that killed more than 80 people. happen b today in response to the attack on syria, one san francisco group is organizing a peace walk. code pink will walk across the golden gate bridge in solidarity with the people of syria. that march starts at noon at the golden gate bridge plaza. the crisis in syria was on everyone's minds at an interfaith fundraiser in newark. a harsh critic of the president was the keynote speaker, kazir khan. and his wife stayed mostly away from politics and instead calling for peace and understanding. abc 7 news reporter lisa amin gulezian has the story. >> reporter: a silicon valley fundraiser. the keynote speaker knows about courage, loss, struggles and the capacity to care. >> my son passed away in 2004. >> reporter: his son died in iraq during a suicide bombing. the khans spoke at the democratic national convention last year denouncing then candidate trump for considering a travel ban. the republican nominee fired back in various tweets. the khans now travel the globe spreading their message of acceptance, kazir khan trying to stay neutral when asked about syria, refugees and the recent missile attacks. >> the united states always has been a humanitarian country. always have stood with those who have referring. and we should remember our basic values. >> reporter: his wife who rarely speaks publicly had this to say about her fears if the situation in syria escalates. >> [ inaudible ] it would be much better and to bring borders are closed for syrians, yet in their name we are going to send missiles. >> reporter: while finding peace in the region won't happen on this night, staying optimistic is still possible. >> don't focus on the ugliness, focus on the goodness of america. >> reporter: in newark, lisa amin gulezian, abc 7 news. now to a warning for women at stanford after two sexual assaults within 20 minutes of each other on campus. both attacks happened on escondido road between 10:30 and 11:00 friday night. one woman was walking and the other jogging and the man approached from behind and groped them. both women said their attacker was short and bald. in napa county, dozens of people dropped out of a triathlon because they weren't dressed for the cold weather yesterday morning. just after swimming through the lake they started the cycling portion and pouring rains hit. about 30 people in the hits triathlon series had to be treated for hypothermia. >> i would say maybe 25% of the people dropped out, just out of pure -- this is insane, it took an hour for me to stop shivering and control my hands and i came to race in the southern california weather and it didn't work out too well. >> they were taken to a warming center where everyone recovered and another cyclist crashed and went to the hospital. it is likely several days before a second barge is removed from the bay bridge after sinking early on friday and began spewing oil. wildlife and coast guard experts surveyed the damage from the water and from the air yesterday. they want to make sure it won't get any worse before they take the next step. >> since the vents are plugged, we're look closely at the conditions of what we find under water and then make a determination as to whether we want to pump the product off or secure e secure everything and then raise the barge. >> the coast guard doesn't know how much oil has spilled until the barge is raised and the fuel in the tank is measured. so far no reports of effected wildlife. turning to our weather this morning, it is clear and dry. but many people are still cleaning up from the past few days of storms. in the east bay, residents are dealing with the aftermath of mudslides, downed trees, wind damage. abc 7 news reporter cornell bernard has the story. >> very scary. very lucky to be alive. >> reporter: dennard livingston shows us around what is left of his house in the oakland hills. >> it scares me that i could have been sitting right there. >> reporter: where a giant tree came crashing on to his deck and living room overnight. >> that is the bathroom. >> reporter: another tree took out the bathroom and laundry room and most of the ceilingch this is what the damage looks like from the back. the giant trees narrowly missed hitting a baby. >> my nephew was laying down two of the trees basically fell in between. thank god that they didn't get hit. >> it is like dominos out here. one hit one tree and hit two trees and then they hit a house. >> reporter: one tree on a nearby hillside was first to fall and took out three more in less than a minute. >> you could hear the first tree falling. and the secondtree. >> reporter: the root ball of this giant eucalyptus is amazing, it is as big as a car. three homes in the oakland hills were red tagged on friday when a mudslide came down in the backyards of homes on banning drive during in the world today and prayed for those who suffer from diseases, family tragedy, slave labor, wars and terrorism. in the east bay, there is a new chapter in the fight for women's equality in the roman catholic church. we were at st. john's in berkeley as silvia perez was ordained a priest. the vatican, as you know, does not official recognize women's ordination. there are 65 female priests in the united states. in 2013 the first woman in northern california was ordained in san ram on. in santa cruz, an injured great white shark that attracted a lot of attention has died. that shark was stranded friday afternoon near pleasure point. brock johnson shared this video of the young adult sitting in shallow water. right by the shore. several people tried to get it back to sea on friday, but it kept on washing back. scientists found the carcus it either died from a nervous system infection or got a hook caught in its mouth. state fish and wildlife will do a necropsy to determine the exact cause of death. kevin durant returned to action and a bay area family joins the crowd as part of a special gesture from the warriors. abc 7 news was at oracle where the team surprised a family with a gift. two sons will be flown to a road playoff game. the family has gone through some hardships. the boy's mom is thankful the team continues to support her family by boosting the spirits of five weekends that b.a.r.t. has shut down the trains between the lake merit and fruitvale stations for nearly track repairs. the entire lake merit station is also closed. there is a bus bridge for riders between the two stations. b.a.r.t. said to expect 20 to 40 minute delays. some fans say, oh, it is not such a big deal. >> i'm not bothered. if i show up a little bit late, who cares. the big heavy in the third quarter, that is what i'm looking for. >> the closure continues today and for the next four saturdays and good morning to you. here is a look at live doppler 7 and you notice we are not picking up green but we are looking at cold temperatures right now. in fact, numbers here in the city are just in the 40s. but you could see some of the clouds here. that has allowed temperatures to not be as cold as they could be. so we could be in the low 40s in the city but we are in the low 30s up in the north bay. 46 here. 41 in mountainview and 43 in san jose and 39 in half moon bay. so chilly on the coast. and from this advantage point, you could see the beginning of our sunrise at 6:44. it is 37 in livermore, fairfield, santa rosa 34 and 42 in concord. you know how cold it was yesterday and this morning we still have the frost advisory until 8:00 in the north bay. but it is awfully chilly elsewhere around the bay. from mt. tam, it is a nice day and sunshine and cool. a chance of showers arrive early tomorrow for just a few parts of the bay. then we'll look for a sunny monday. showers return late wednesday. but we're going to cloud it up as early as tuesday. so here is a look at what you can expect. it is dry throughout the day. here is midnigt and the rain looks pretty impressive from ukiah to mendocino. but it falls apart. as we get to santa rosa, there is measurable precip around clear lake but through san francisco, maybe a few drops. .10 and then at 10:00 there is the clouds then a sunny afternoon. how many precip. we wouldn't call it rain. a couple hundredths here and maybe .500 up in santa rosa. so if you are planning your sunday and monday, it is inconsequential but throughout the week you'll notice more warmth in the east bay valleys. we're coming up a good amount tomorrow. today just 60. mid-60s on monday, tuesday and wednesday. and then we drop on thursday. the front comes in wednesday night. it is a weak one. we'll get to it in just a moment. 60 in oakland and palo alto. 61 in napa. 58 in san rafael and look at the sun. coast, inland, should be a beautiful afternoon. but as we go through the mid-week forecast, i talk about the clouds coming back on tuesday into wednesday, 5:00. could see rain in cloverdale. it sirnks south throughout the day. it is dry in the east bay or south bay but the rain invades the rest of the bay area late wednesday into thursday. thursday afternoon, though, looks like it should move on out of here. that is how weak it is. so north of i-80 headed into the sacramento valley. 48 tonight. it is warmer because of the clouds. maybe some precip in san rafael. looking at more 40s elsewhere. and the accuweather seven-day forecast, well we're in the 50s and 60s today. a coup a couple of degrees warmer tomorrow after a sprinkle perhaps and looking at clouds on tuesday. download our abc 7 news app and we still have the spring showers wednesday and thursday. it looked impressive yesterday but it is still something that we have to deal with and allowing temperatures to stay on the cooler side of normal. we are used to the years where the rain stops and we're at 80 but it is really spread space. video from the bureau of land management shows the wild flowers superbloom at this national monument 70 miles east of san luis obispo. there are dozens of flowers species in full bloom and it is magnificent. the photographer who took this video and picture said he's never seen anything like this before. extra staff has been at it to handle the extra visitors this incredible by bloom is expected to be around for about two more weeks. volunteers help make a san francisco neighborhood a little more green yesterday. to help celebrate earth month, the friends of the urban forest teamed up with the san francisco bicycle coalition to plant trees in the excelsior district and they rode on bikes to get to the different locations. 30 trees yesterday and they'll do the same later this pleasant ton foothill high school marching band at the national cherry blossom parade in washington, d.c. these children, these teenagers are really impressive. they are one of the most successful meteorologist lisa argen. >> good morning, to you, hi everyone, it does look nice out there but it is cold and that is why we still have the frost advisory in effect for the next hour and a half up in the north bay. but this isn't the only area where we have temperatures in the 30s. a look at mt. tam where it is a nice day. 46 in san francisco. that is the warm spot. low 40s in mountain view. 37 in gilroy and 39 on the coast and it is 34 in santa rosa with 37 in novato, fairfield and livermore. so yes, we're still holding on to the cooler than average temperatures. 49 degrees. cooler and with a sunny noon on tap, 50s on the coast and 60s elsewhere and a look at rain in the seven-day forecast, not a lot of rain but i'll have it for you coming up. developing news out of egypt where 26 people have died and 71 others are injured after a bomb skbloezed at a coptic christian church during a palm sunday celebration. a second explosion killed 11 and injured 35 people. coptic christians have repeatedly been targeted by islamic extremists. these attacks come just weeks before pope francis is scheduled to visit. the islamic group has claimed responsibility for both attacks. there are reports this morning that syrian war planes are once again taking off from the air base that the u.s. military attacked on thursday with cruise missiles. the same base the pentagon said was used to carry out a chemical attack that killed syrian civilians. elizabeth hur has the story. >> reporter: back in action. these pictures from russian state controlled television shows syrian jets take off from shayrat air base. less than 24 hours after nearly 60 u.s. cruise missiles bombarded the syrian military airfield. new images show the wreckage of aircraft destroyed and the bunkers show tell tale scorch marks and president trump tweeting that the air raid was a success. congratulations to our great mlitary men and women for representing the united states and the world so well. but while satellite shows damage to aircraft shelters sh the runways are untouched. the president tweeting the reason you don't generally hit runways is that they are easy and inexpensive to quickly fix. george stephanopoulos asked rex tillerson if the air-strikes signal a change in u.s. policy toward syria? >> we're asking and calling on bashar assad to cease the use of weapons other than that there is no change to the military posture. >> reporter: the pentagon said it was from this base that the deadly nerve agent was used in the chemical attack that killed more than 80 people. elizabeth hur, abc news, new york. and as you saw, secretary the state rex tillerson will appear on this week after the decision to launch u.s. air-strikes on syria in response to that deadly chemical attack. you could watch the full interview on this week with george stephanopoulos at 8:00 this morning right here on abc 7. new details about the man suspected of driving a truck into a crowd killing four people in sweden. this morning stockholm police announced he was an asylum seeker whose application was rejected. they say he stole the beer truck that he used as a weapon. police have identified him as a 39-year-old originally from uzbekistan, since the attack, they went back through his social media to find extremist comments. they believe he also had a possible explosive in that truck. >> we have found something in the truck where -- in the driver's seat, a technical device that should not be there. i could not at this stage say this is a bomb or some sort of flammable -- >> swedish authorities say a second person has been arrested in connection with the case for suspected crimes against the nation. and they are also holding four other people. police in norway arrested a man after they found a bomb-like device. they blocked off several blocks of oslo so safely detonate the explosion. no one was hurt. norway security put the nation on high alert because of the attack in sweden. there was a lively debate on immigration at a town hall outside of sacramento. yesterday california republican congressman tom mcclintock took questions for nearly two hours facing criticism from the audience. one man wanted to know what he would do to help dreamers. people brought to the u.s. illegally as young children. >> punishing a dreamer for a situation that they had no control over is like punishing a child for their parent drunk driving while they were in the car. >> once we have the forms that are necessary to assure the integrity of our borders, i think we are going to address that issue. but in the meantime. >> i cannot advise you to break the law. >> he said that president trump, quote, had no right to order the attack without consulting congress. bay area democratic representatives also held a town hall in antioch yesterday. the ntsb is investigating a small plane crash that killed a southern california family on their way to visit colleges in oregon. the crash happened just outside of eugene, oregon, and they all died. witnesses describe seeing the plane flying at a low altitude when it suddenly turned and went down into a field. investigators plan to be at the site of the crash until the end of the day. happening today, hundreds of at&t technicians and call workers plan to protest. they want what they call a fair contract. today marks one year since employees have been working without a contract. last month workers won an agreement with the company that now no longer requires them to work out side of their expertise and classification. workers will protest because they say they are frustrated, waiting for new contracts that are outside of the at&t store on blossom hill road in san jose at noon. still ahead on abc 7 mornings, built
