we feel proud that now we're being recognized as athletes. >> reporter: but the new state designation actually threatens the traditional cheer program in the liberty union high school district. >> the girls are athletes so for that to be possibly taken away from us, we were devastated. >> reporter: as districts grapple with the costs of implementing cheer as a sport, luhsd superintendent proposed cutting traditional cheer and implementing stunt cheer. it alarmed school board member ray valverde. >> don't cut something else that has been successful in that district for years. >> reporter: traditional sideline cheer is more inclusive because more students can participate. stunt teams are smaller. >> stunt teams are very small. they allow up to 30 girls but usually they're not that big at all. they're usually around 20 so less girls would be able to be on the team. >> reporter: more colleges recognize traditional cheer for scholarships. this cell phone video shows heritage high taking 10th place at the national competition in florida. their coach says stunt cheer is not as established. >> it's not only same level so we don't feel like it's an appropriate replacement. >> reporter: the issue goes before the school board at next week's meeting. the superintendent did not return requests for comment. in the east bay, katie utehs, abc7 news. smoke inhalation caused the deaths of all 36 victims in the ghost ship fire. the alameda county million examiner says burns our other injuries did not play a role in their deaths last year. the victims were unable to get out of the warehouse. there was a party in several illegal living spaces inside. investigators have not announced what caused the december 2 fire or any potential criminal charges. two santa clara correctional deputies are on administrative leave. the sheriff's office says deputy leonel groba hit an inmate in the face. his airz came on february 17. "the mercury news" reports sergeant robert little secretly recorded his supervisors last year in an attempt to get some leverage on them. the arrests come as the sheriff is working on reforms because of numerous allegations of jail misconduct including the beating death of an inmate. reuters reports the department of homeland security is considering a move to separate mothers and children who cross the border into the u.s. illegally. it's that kind of idea that instills fear in the households of many immigrant families, but now in san francisco, there is help coming with a new hotline and legal assistance. abc7 news reporter lonni rivera has the story. >> reporter: an unexpected visit by i.c.e. agents to a community center in the mission district caused fear and panic in the neighborhood in january. community activist says calls have come through a new hotline about similar situations. >> we've received over 450 calls since february 10 and @really the community being afraid. >> reporter: the san francisco immigrant legal and education network set up the hotline for residents to report i.c.e. actions and to inform undocumented immigrants about their legal rights. >> we don't recommend you say anything. if you are arrested, just say your name and ask for an attorney. >> reporter: the mexican consulate in san francisco launched a legal assistance center. the san francisco office has joined 50 mexican canconsulates calm fears and offer legal advice to mexican nationals. >> we want them to know their rights and we want them to have information from reliable sources. >> reporter: consulate workers are visiting communities many attorneys are working pro bono. t it's their way of staying ahead of the trump administration's promise to stiffen immigration enforcement. in san francisco, lonni rivera, abc7 news. violent robbery attempt in san francisco was caught on surveillance camera. take a look. watch as a man with a gun and a hammer knocked over a woman who works at this jewelry store on grant avenue. it happened last month but police shared this sflt sflt with us yesterday. the man waved his gun around and smashed the display cases but didn't take anything. here's what he looks like without a mask. no one was hurt in the incident. a special needs child was left on a novato school bus for three hours. the 4-year-old student boarded the bus at the nova education center 3:30 on monday. the driver parked near his own home with what he thought was an empty bus. after he received a phone call from the dispatcher, the driver found the child sleeping underneath a seat. police will not pursue any charges. city of san jose has just announced the hiring of of a new director of energy services. ray riordan has 25 years experience in emergency management in the bay area. a city spokesman tells abc7 news his hire after last week's flooding is coincidental. the city's last emergency services director left his post last november and there's been a national search underway. assistant city manager dave sykes serve as emergency services director during the flooding. happening today, san jose mayor sam liccardo will be back out in neighborhoods affected by last week's flooding to help clean up. he will join volunteers in kelly park. members from orchard supply hardware will help repair damaged areas with $30,000 worth of donated items and materials. the clean-up is from 9:00 this morning until 2:00 this afternoon. recent rains have caused scary situation in a south bay neighborhood. a gas leak forced people to leave their homes near suncrest avenue just north of alum rock park. abc7 news reporter katie marzullo tells us it took pg&e crews 10 hours to repair the work. >> reporter: it was well after dark when pg&e crews finished repairing a gas leak on suncrest avenue in san jose. diane was home when the leak happened. it was around 11:00 a.m. her landscaper started frantically ringing her doorbell. >> he saw the -- some -- the earth come up like it -- like it was blowing. like kind of like a volcano would erupt. >> reporter: diane called 911-there was a very strong gas smell. >> reporter: the fire department evacuated some homes and had other residents shelter in place while pg&e shut off the gas. despite several days of sunshine, pg&e says the cause of the leak was rain. >> because the soil is still saturated in some locations you can get incidents like this where underground facilities are compromise ld and they can result in a gas leak. >> reporter: in this case, a 4-inch steel pipeline came apart where it was welded together. 20 customers were without gas for most of the day and night. diane wasn't especially inconvenienced by that but she is worried about long-term pipeline safety. >> certainly there's a concern with what happened with san bruno and we live in an area where the earth moves and so that would be my main concern. >> reporter: this neighborhood had a similar gas killed on the job last week. an overflow crowd packed concord pavilion yesterday to say good-bye to deputy mike folly. he was killed a week ago wednesday when he was hit by a prison bus on a dark rainy morning. deputy foley was remembered for his love of the outdoors and his dedication to his job and family. >> i don't think my dad ever realized how many lives he touched and how many people he -- how many people he helped feel safe. >> in addition to his son michael, deputy foley leaves behind his wife tammy and daughter tonya. he was 60 years old. hang todappening today, a m scheduled in he's listed as the bay area contact on the national website of the march for trump. but he says he didn't plan it that way. >> funny enough, i'm not actually a trump supporter. >> reporter: what he says he does support is free speech, a right he believes was violated when a lecture by former breitbart editor milo yiannopoulos was canceled amid protests and vandalism. >> after the milo event and seeing some people i know get attacked and having their rights shut down, i knew something had to happen. >> reporter: the berkeley college republicans brought yiannopoulos to campus but they say they're not affiliated with this event. >> we're actually advising members not to go because its right get dangerous. sort of like what happened on the milo night. >> reporter: people who work downtown remember it well. >> they tore down these fences over here for the construction, busted up all the atms, i think they messed up starbucks too. >> reporter: but the man we spoke to insibss it won't happen this time. >> we've been working closely with berkeley pd for the last three weeks and i think they're going to do a great job tomorrow. >> reporter: except the city spokesman told us police have not received an application for a demonstration and haven't issued any permits. he refused our repeated requests to speak about it on camera. the group by any means necessary is planning a counterprotest. >> stand up to trump's hate and to make sure that berkeley lives up to its promise of being a sanctuary city. >> reporter: in berkeley, jonathan bloom, abc7 news. groups have also planned a counterprotest to the pro-president trump rally. that demonstration starts at noon at martin luther king jr. civic center park in berkeley. matt barnes back on the golden state warriors team had his court date pushed back until the end of june. his lawyers told a judge yesterday he had reason to believe barnes will be playing in the nba finals. barnes is facing assault charges after an alleged incident while he was playing for the sacramento kings. police say he was involved at an altercation at a bar in manhattan back in december. his court date is set for june 27. barnes was signed by the warriors on thursday. pretty cool opportunity today for fans of steph curry, the reigning two-time nba mvp sent out this tweet saying under armour will drop 30 signed pairs of his limited new gold high tops at the foot locker store in manhattan. curry is under armour's top client. his contract with the company through 2024 estimated at $4 million a year. the deal also includes an equity stake in the company. the warriors will take on the knicks tomorrow in new york. you can catch all the action right here on abc7. coverage begins at noon. part of the east side walk on the golden gate bridge will be closed from 5:00 until 10:00 this morning and tomorrow. you can walk on to the sidewalk from either end of the bridge but only go about halfway across. the closure will allow crews to replace lights on the roadway. the west side walk will remain open for bicycles only. the work will be rescheduled if it rains. well, a storm of biblical proportions is looming in california's future. the last 200-year storm hit 43 days between 1861 and 1862 creating a huge lake where the central valley had been. state emergency experts are working on a long-term catastrophe plan. they got some practice recently with last month's flood threat at the oroville dam, which forced thousands of people to evacuate. a long-term plan would help californians deal with widespread evacuations and other needs in the event of a megastorm. experts say the state has a system in place that can be applied to all disasters, including a major earthquake. >> we really look at it as what wo do we need to be able to do and sometimes that doesn't have to be looked at differently for different scenarios. for example, being able to take care of or help communities take care of a lot of people in a shelter environment or what we call mass care. we may have to do that for an earthquake or a flood. >> an earthquake catastrophe plan is already in place for the bay area. drivers throughout the state are filing damage claims against caltrans thanks to potholes. the agency is responsible for fixing those potholes. the recent winter storms causing the damage on state highways. last january, caltrans says it fixed 24,000 potholes in the state. this january, it says they were 35,000 that needed filling. in 2015, caltrans says it paid out nearly $370,000 to fill more than 4,000 damage claims. this year, it's expected to cost a lot more. good saturday morning to you. some scattered showers before the main event later on this afternoon. and here's live doppler 7 where we're not picking up anything yet, but we could see a few showers right on through noontime. the rainfall, though, with the 3:00 or 4:00 in the afternoon, the steady rain. here it is. coming down from the north, it has a lot of cold air associated with it and as a result, the national weather service has issued a winter storm warning already tomorrow afternoon through monday, looking at 3 feet above the passes, some very gusty winds, 1 to 2 feet above 4,000 feet and we're looking at lake level, a decent amount, about 1 foot. so, if you want to head to the resorts, a good idea to really get there now and wait to come home until monday. looking at 15 inches, tahoe city, 19 inches southlake and kirkwood. this is through 4:00 on monday. so we are bringing in our storm impact scale. we'll get to that in just a moment, but right now as you take a look at santa cruz with 68 yesterday, 43 right now and a high of 58 so 10 degrees cooler. not as cold as it will be tomorrow after the passage of the cold front. 43 in gilroy, 53 in oakland and san francisco 52 from the exploratorium camera, we do have mostly cloudy skies with low 40s for santa rosa, fog up in sonoma county, 47 by the delta but look at concord. 52 and even livermore in the upper 40s so our inland valleys 10 to 11 degrees from where we were yesterday, up, so we are milder with the cloud cover. southwest winds will gust with the passage of the cold front so we'll look for another wintery scenario as we go through the second half of the weekend with a cold storm looking at low snow levels down to around 2,000 feet. lake county, around mt. haimt, storms are possible tomorrow. upper 50s to low 60s, cooler than yesterday but warmer than tomorrow, it's a 1 on our storm impact scale today, tomorrow and into monday with cold showers and possibility of some hail and looking at it -- the snow levels around 2,000 feet with accumulating snow so as we go through the rest of the morning hours, scattered light showers so even by 9:00, around the bay, very light, passing through but getting more organized in the north bay. snow levels will be coming down. look at clear lake. this is 5:00 and here's the line, the front associated with the gusty winds and it pushes through the south bay by about 9:00. overnight hours, more showers into sunday, but then into monday, sunday we'll see afternoon showers, peeks of sunshine and maybe a thunderstorm. you can see that pink there. could see some snow. we're talking a couple inches around the highest elevation. so the amounts anywhere from 1/4 inch to 1/2 inch in (vo) introducing the all-new subaru impreza. the longest-lasting vehicle in its class. more than a car, it's a subaru. paula ferris joining us from new york to tell us what's coming up at 7:00 on "good morning america." >> coming up, the trump campaign's ties to russia front and center again as trump's new attorney general jeff sessions gives his side of the story and why the president is taking aim at top democrats, calling for an investigation into their connections with russia. plus the department of homeland security considering a proposal that would separate mothers and children illegally crossing the border. what is behind this as immigration officers continue their crackdown. and finally, a heroic teen in the right place at the right time saving a toddler's life, all caught on camera while on the job at a fast food restaurant. that child is doing well this morning. we'll tell you what led to the emergency. it's all coming up on "gma" this saturday. we hope to see you soon. an iconic house cleaning product is celebrating women's history month by ditching the brawny guy on the logo. you may recognize the red flannel and black shirt but the person behind it has changed a lot. brawny put a woman on its 8-roll packages to honor women in science, tech, engineering, and math fields. it goes along with the social media campaign using #strengthhasnogender. it's a financial first. bit coin is now more valuable than goal. the crypto currency is now worth $1,238 per unit. it's gone up 7% this week. gold fell this week, dropping to $1 below that. gold is traditionally seen as a stable and secure investment. analysts say don't look too much into this because the gold market is still worth $7 trillion versus $20 billion for bit coin. the nation's largest and oldest public affairs group held its biggest fund-raiser of the year last night. abc7 news was at the fairmont hotel in san francisco for the commonwealth club's annual gala and dinner. the distinguished citizens award were handed out to five leaders for their generosity, inspiration, and desire to make a difference in the world. abc7 news anchor dan ashley served as emcee of the event last night. still to come on abc7 mornings, why the state refuses to release a report about the health risks of using your cell phone. and a slower rollout, the reason why b.a.r.t. won't be putting as many good morning to you. we're starting this half hour with a look at the weather. here's meteorologist lisa argen. good morning to you, cornell. and we have some rain in the upper elevations. this is chute sutro. you can see the low clouds and due to the cloud cover, we are milder but boy, if you are headed out early for a bike ride, the upper elevations, kind of damp out there. 50 in san jose, 48 in half moon bay, a wet tarmac at sfo but no delays. 42 in santa rosa with some fog. 48 in livermore and the golden gate bridge featuring all the cloud cover so some scattered showers for the first half of your day, rain arrives for the second half. the amounts won't be too impressive but it's going to bring much colder air and gusty winds. we'll time it out for you and talk about how much in just a few minutes. an acknowledgment this morning from the california health department stating concerns about exposure to cell phone radiation. this is a story that affects almost everybody because 95% of americans own a cell phone. a newly released draft report includes scientific studies regarding long-term exposure as well as recommendations. lyanne melendez has the story. >> reporter: holding a cell phone next to your head or body seems to be a way of life. >> usually i have the phone down next to my body in my pocket or something like that and i'll pick it up and hold it. >> reporter: people have long suspected that all that radiation may cause damage to cells and tissues. >> we have evidence of brain tumors and other head and neck tumors. we also have evidence of sperm damage in males, infertility in females. >> reporter: joel is with uc berkeley's school of public health. he took the california department of health to court to force the release of this document, which says scientific studies suggest long-term cell phone use may increase the risk of brain cancer and other health problems. he says there's been a lot of pressure from the wireless industry to keep any kind of negative report on cell phones hidden from the public. >> the wireless industry had a vested interest in creating -- manufacturing confusion, and they've done a very good job at it. >> reporter: the report also suggests keeping phones away from your body, use headsets, speakerphone and next more. as we discoved few people follow those recommendations. >> right next to my head, next to my ear, yeah, like that. >> reporter: are you concerned at all? >> not typically. >> reporter: most people say they would consider adopting those recommendations. >> if there's a concerted message from sources that are trusted. >> reporter: but part of the reason why the state refused to release the document was because the centers for disease control and prevention insist more research is needed before we know if using cell phones causes health effects. in san francisco, lyanne melendez, abc7 news. vice president pence is down playing his use of a private e-mail account to conduct state business during his tenure as governor of indiana. a report by the indianapolis star says pence contacted criticizers on terrorism and homeland security via an aol account which was hacked last summer. during the campaign, pence was vocal critic of hillary clinton's use of a private e-mail server while she was the secretary of state. he says there's no comparison between his situation and clinton's. >> i'm very confident that our e-mail practices were in full compliance with all of indiana's laws, and in my service as vice president will continue -- will continue that practice. >> however, as with clinton's case, there are now concerns pence didn't rigorously comply with government archiving and open records guidelines. new this morning, just days after his first speech to a joint session of congress, president trump visited what will be the nation's newest aircraft carrier, the "uss gerald ford." in his weekly address, the president talked about the importance of giving the military the resources and the training they need to get the job done. >> my budget will give america's armed forces the resources they need to achieve full and total military preparedness to meet any and all global challenges. and meet them, we will. investing in the military means investing in peace. >> president trump also says his vision for the country will include eliminating the gefs sequester, which creates caps for military and nonmilitary spending. arnold schwarzenegger is terminating his role as host of the "celebrity apprentice" the former california glafr blamed president trump for low ratings. schwarzenegger says people were boycotting the show because trump was still a producer. "celebrity apprentice" premiered in january to a 27% drop in ratings. president trump said he would pray for arnold and better ratings. well, that's prompted a twitter battle about an hour ago, president trump tweeted a response, tweeting, arnold schwarzenegger isn't voluntarily leaving "the apprentice," he was fired by his bad, pathetic ratings, not by me. sad end to a great show and schwarzenegger tweeted back, you should think about hiring a new joke writer and a fact checker. tech marketing firm in seattle hopes to expand diversity in the tech industry by setting up a hub just for female students. tune is offering free housing, food, laptops, and mentoring to six women who are pursuing computer science undergraduate degrees. they would live in a home near the university of washington. the company's founders say it's just one quarter of computing jobs are held by women and that needs to change. they hope the home will be a safe space for the students to collaborate. the program is set up to grow each other, allowing more young women to pursue tech careers. we have a link on our website. if you or someone you know wants to apply, that's abc7news.com. the deadline is april 1. work is progressing to repair the damaged oroville spillway at the oroville dam. but a butte county man wants work crews to stop work. he believes the erosion caused by all the water that poured from lake oroville presents a golden opportunity. reporter jerry olinon has the story. >> look at all this beautiful exposed brand new bedrock. >> reporter: you're listening to a grown man sal vase. >> there are nuggets embedded in that bedrock. >> reporter: bob has been prospecting for gold for 20 years. he's certain that the erosion caused by the damaged oroville dam spillway is creating a golden opportunity. when you look at what's happened with the oroville spillway, what do you see? cloudy skies. there are a few light showers, especially in some of the higher elevations but this is what we're waiting for. it's a cold front. it's going to bear down on the bay area throughout the day today, bringing much colder air. we've been running above average as you know and duo have a winter storm warning in effect. 4:00 p.m. through 4:00 p.m. monday. 8 to 14 inches above 3,000 feet so this is a big snow maker in the mountains, 1 to 2 feet above 4,000 feet and looking at gusty winds. could see wind of 100 miles an hour so looking like monday really the best time to come back. so, amounts ranging from anywhere from 1 foot to a little bit better than that. southlake and kirkwood, some of the resorts here with the bonus amount so from mt. tam, a little bit of rain shower activity, some fog from sonoma county to santa rosa so it's a little bit wet here at times, but the main event is later on this afternoon. 44 in gilroy, it's 48 in half moon bay with low 50s oakland and san francisco. and from sutro, you can see the cloud cover. it's a gray start. it will be cooler today but not as cool as it will be tomorrow behind the system. 47 in fire fairfield. 48 in but still warmer than we will be tomorrow. 11 degrees warmer right mow in livermore so we have showers here at sfo. you can see them on the lens with the cold storm arriving later on today. snow over the highest peaks as soon as later on tonight. lasting through tomorrow and with the cold air in place, not out of the question that we could see a thunderstorm tomorrow and we'll see some of that snow accumulate around perhaps mt. hamilton, highway 29 up in the north bay, highs today, though, upper 50s and low 60s, this is about average for this time of year, those upper 60s to low 70s of the last few days, well above average. we're bringing in the storm impact scale today and tomorrow with a 1. it will linger into monday as well. the cold system chugging to the south and it will arrive by about 3:00. but let's track the shower activity for you. you'll see some showers before then, before the noon hour, i think, in the north bay. they could be over into the east bay, but as we get to about 3:00 or 4:00, here's the line of rain. it's sort of a weak frontal band but we'll see heavy rain for a preef period of time with some of those gusty winds and as we go through tomorrow, notice the clouds but the pink and white indicate snow so kind of a wild day. san carlos, half moon bay, a half inch in oakland. overnight lows, it will be cold, 30s and 40s and the accuweather 7 day forecast, 1 on our storm impact scale today, tomorrow, and monday. more sun tomorrow, but more of a possibility of some heavier downpours with the rain/snow mix and the temperatures coming down quickly. you download our abc7 news app and you'll be able to track the rain and maybe see some of that snow around mt. hamilton but we get warmer behind the system, but that's going to be brief. it looks like we could see more rain next weekend. but we'll concentrate on the rain this weekend. >> they're going to be skiing up in tahoe until, what, june? >> really some dicey conditions there this weekend. >> yeah. okay. thanks, lisa. in the east bay, you may have noticed a piece of the oakland skyline slowly vanishing. demolition on the old bay bridge span is ahead of schedule. in fact, the work could be complete by the end of this year. >> as it kind of just clears away, you have like just a grand expanse. >> reporter: he's taking a little time to enjoy the view, a view which seems to be changing by the week for drivers on the eastern span of the bay bridge. >> every time i come across, there's a new chunk missing. it's slowly disappearing. >> reporter: yet the old span of the bay bridge is going away, one truss span still visible from the new bridge but two more span segments out of view set to be demolished and that will happen fast. >> the end of march, early april, we will bring down our last truss band and it is a very sentimental time for us. >> that beautiful bridge is gone almost completely. >> reporter: others are getting a little misty thinking about the old steel bridge, constructed back in the 1930s, which started coming down in 2013. >> i grew up here, so it's something i always remember. but i like the new bridge too. >> reporter: here's time lapse video of the process. nothing less than a dramatic feat of engineering. lowering the old truss by crane on to a barge. caltrans says the concrete marine foundations will be demolished this fall like this implosion which took place last october. fish and wildlife protected by an underwater net to catch the debris. >> with each truss band coming down, there are even more phenomenal vistas to behold. >> reporter: but ross isn't getti getting sentimental over the old span. >> it was a classic. it's time to go. >> reporter: a preview of what will be left behind. beautiful vistas of oakland and the east
