It burns so high and the plumes of smoke were so high it was visible in the major highways and visible from 20 peaks in San Francisco. We hardy from many of you waking up with our alerts saying you can see it from the witnesses and twin peaks in San Francisco. It appears they have done a good job of containing the fire. I have not seen other buildings catch fire. We hope it remains the case. I have been at the live desk monitoring what is happening on social media with the fire and i can echo what you have been saying it appears to be an apartment complex unconstruction what a lot of folks are saying, it is a vacation around building under construction and several people tweeting saying they are waking up to a massive fire. It is starting to make National Colleagues with these stunning images. Make national headlines. I am seeing it was an apartment complex under construction the personal belongings were likely not in the building. That is a relief. Meteorologist mike nicco has said these are good conditions for the firefighters fighting this. Let me give you an update oakland is the closest to that and the airport or downtown showing 57 to 56 degrees, light breeze from the east, the southeast at seven Miles Per Hour and blowing to the west northwest pushing it over wayne avenue and lakeshore and pushing 9 embers over the lake. They could head over to the western side of lake side drive. The humidity is running 89 can cool temperatures, high humidity, it is damp. We are still wait on the next storm. It will not come in, in time, to help the firefighters initially. But it could help tonight. This evening. When the rain comes in and keep it from flaring. As far as dealing with the storm, the fire, we have east wind at seven Miles Per Hour to southeast blowing to the north where the smoke going and if it comes to ground level it could be an issue for the toll plaza but we have been watching the camera at bay bridge toll plaza and it looks clear as far as the smoke. That is good news. The fire is hot so it is going up a couple of thousand feet. Possibly in the east bay hills, if it backtracks, it could be spokey near piedmont but the smoke is going straight up. On lester. A street that curves between hanover and newton avenue, a we advise you to avoid lester avenue and landover and newton avenue. These are Small Surface streets. It is a residential area, an Apartment Building under construction with other Apartment Buildings and homes. It can not look like there are businesses. No one would be travel are here unless they live in the area. A lost folks probably have their cars park on the streets so stay away. A couple of streets in the area, lakeshore runs along the lake merritt a couple of blocks to the west of the fire and we hear that is still open and a colleague, paula, lives in the area and said vehicles are still traveling in lakeshore area but no closures in the area. Park boulevard is further to the east not look like it is closed. Our main roads are okay and keeping a close eye on the toll plaza and emeryville and not seeing much smoke, 580, 880, blowing over there and do not be surprised, roll the windows up and avoid the area. Sky 7 arrived this morning and we watched at how ferocious the fire is and the collapse, caving in, inward. You can see how high the flames are and the entire facade caving in and burning. We have seen the scene repeated over and over again half an hour ago. We saw most the structure still there. Now the live pictures show the interior of the building has burned and the exterior is a shell and portions of this are falling down, two. There is not a lot left to burn. Fortunately, there is not a wind to blow it to the neighborhood so it has been a huge help for the firefighters because it is densely populated. Thre are a lot of older homes and this is a newly constructed Apartment Building and we do not think anyone was living there at the time. But there are a lot of close in units we do not think the fire has spread. We are continuing to hope that is the case. It went to three afarms at hanover and lester not far from lake merritt with the building surrounds by firefighters and the equipment to keep it from spreading. It uniffed so fast, the flames are so high early this morning and the building collapsed on itself with a smoldering chevrolet building reminding us of the sixalarm fire in emeryville in a densely packed residential area and it spread to multiple structures and notably, it was in the town homes, the heat of the fire damaged a lot of the local businesses and this morning, the flames we saw were so high, certainly visible from San Francisco and we will show you what it looks like, so lot and so high visible from the surrounding freeways, certainly frightening for those who live in the apartments nearby. We saw incredible damage and you wonder in the firefighters can contain the spread. They have done an incredible job and response and the building is lost but keeping it from spreading to the close by homes and apartments. You wonder if they will have heat damage. We hope to residents and couple of colleagues including one a block away describing the we number of embers she saw coming and falling close to her home and it is two blocks away. The neighbors were certainly awake, identified, looking at ths in awe of the situation saying no one is ready or expected this to happen as they tried to gather her cats and get ready to evacuation way we have not heads of major evacuations but i am sure those who live in the area were asked to learn. It is between lester and hanover with no all the neighbors from the surrounding buildings are on the sidewalk with fire alarms at nearby buildings. Everything in the neighborhood is outside at moment. Are there embers or ash or does it look to be under control and dying down. A lot of smoke and embers. A lot of ash, you can smell the folk from four or five blocks away. The building was under construction and hopefully not inhabited. There is no confirmation of injury. Four stories in one area. This was other used to be a multifamily structure originally build in 193589 but it appears it may have been knocked down or it was a completely new building but it was under construction at time and not occupied but so much fuel for the fire and that is why we saw the ferocious flames this morning. You can see parts of the building falling down, a really tightly packed neighborhood of older homes and older apartment complexes. How is it affecting traffic . You will not get near the area on a car . You would not want to be. You would be in the way. You can see the flashing lights in the shape of a j turned sideways and it is lester avenue and we believe the address of the building is 329 lester avenue toward the bottom of the curve to the south of it is acton where our colleague, paula, was standing halfway down there on the lefthand side so that is closer to lake merritt. All of lester is closed and i believe acton is closed. You can see the flashing lights on the north side of the j which is lester and that is hanover. We have a full closure of hanover to lakeshore avenue with a string of lights, and that is lake sure avenue. We hear from our colleagues that it is still open and folks are able to drive on that. Where the fire is, a residential area. There are a lot of homes and participate buildings, densely populated but unless you live there, i dont think anyone would drive through to get to work. We can see some of the smoke on 580 and 880 to the north and south of lake merritt but nothing on the bay bridge toll plaza camera or smoke on emeryville camera but just looking at surface streets and lester is fully closed and hanover is, as well, and acton is, the surface streets sounding the immediate area of the fire with meteorologist mike nicco, monitoring the weather conditions. Could not be much better until it was raining. The closest reporting station is oakland museum. And it is to the western side of lake merritt reporting 55 degrees and 53 dew point the moisture in the area so we have a humidity at 90 or 92 . It is not reporting winds. When they blow they come from the southeast and around three to six Miles Per Hour. They have been light. They had a lot to do with that with the firefighters getting on quickly and it had a lot to do with it not spreading like it could have. They were surprising in the heat from the fire although the flames have died down the fire has a ton of heat in it because of what is still sitting down there smoldering at the bottom and there are embers the next hour or two hours because of the heat and they will come up and blow more toward the west and northwest and hopefully blow over the lake and land in the lake. All the visibility is good until 2,000 or 2,500 street. The only area that is that tall is Mount Tamalpais and i have not soon any smoke make it that far. So could not be better conditions for the firefighters. We are grateful for the few days of wet weather. It is helpful for the firefighters. It is 6 18. We are worried it would spread to other buildings, a ferocious fire. It is 6 21, a three alarm fire in oakland at acton place and lester avenue, calm compared to earlier today. A fire that is described as burned and now it is a shell. Jessica has been watching it on social media and monitoring what people are saying. Jessica we saw the huge fire seen from San Francisco and viewers on twitter say from across the lake they can smell the fire so that is how reaching it is as far as seeing it from a far distance. One viewer saw it from her bedroom window and sent us video saying she can still smell it. The ash was not to her doorstep but she could memorial the fire. Another viewer lives three blocks away, saying everything is closed off and there are narrow streets there, and alexis has been talking about that, and everything is blocked off. They are small streets. There are fire trucks in the area. What we hear is some of the same thing we hear from people calling in through the morning. It is new construction. We is soon incredible images. We are showing you what we were seeing the massive flames when there was a lot of fuel burning in the middle of that. Just the collapsed. These are images from early this morning. It was very visible from 580 and 880. Alexis smith, do we see any impact . Alexis we are looking at 9 streets in the area, to sky 7 i will be able to illustrate what streets are closed. All the flashing lights what i was trying to describe, this is lester, in a j shape and hanover runs parallel closer to lake merritt and at the bottom we have acton and the string of lights along the shore of lake merritt is lakeshore avenue so all of the surface streets are impacted with lester and hanover fully closed. Acton, i believe, is closed as well, a smaller street on the south end of lester. This is not a typical commute. We have smoke visible from 23580 and 880, and i have been watching the doll toll plaza but i have not seen the smoke l is a huge Emergency Response and the flames are tapped out and the smoke gone. They will work on hot spots, a massive threealarm fire. Highly recommend you avoid this you will not be able to drive down the streets for some time to come. A it is weird do see this because you cannot see the fire. You cannot. It is in the middle of lester, right here, and that is where we were. It is tough to tell because you cannot see the flames, just a few hot spots. We have flames in the building and we saw the walls caving in and collapsing, with a handle on it. It is never easy. We had sparks and debris falling down. What a huge difference from 20 to 30 minutes ago where the huge flames were roaring into the sky. It is tough to see it at this point. You can see the flashing lights of the fire crews and they just health it burn. Let it burn. Not a lot left. As alexis has pointed out, what we see is the end of there and you can now see barely in the distance the smoke, and earlier i can tell you the flames were shooting up so high it was unbelievable. People watched it from San Francisco watching the flames on the horizon as they wondered what the heck was going on. The pictures from sky 7 are only 45 or 50 minutes old and portions of the building fell into the center of the building and it went that way ask not outward. If it went outward it would fall on the homes located adjacent to the new construction. The building has been under construction for months. No one was living there. It is way too early to know what started the fire. We do know no one should have been living in the building and it was a huge relief. It does not appear to be we spreading to the adjacent homes. The majority of the buildings have been there man decades, an older neighborhood with a lot of people. You can see the neighborhood is out and watching this, smoldering. Witness, Amy Hollyfield, described the heat of this and can imagine as you were saying this is an older neighborhood, we were seeing 9 place this replaced the building that was there before built in the late 50s. You look at the street view of the area, certainly smaller Apartment Buildings a lot of telephone wires and polls and narrow streets and closely packed. Everyone is saying people awake in the area and people standing outside with mouths just open at what they wake up to. We spoke to a witness confirming it was under construction and she cannot see activity for some time.
